Max Dale’s Steak & Chop House has been a beloved staple of the Skagit Valley for years, and this year, the community honored it by voting it Best Steakhouse in Skagit’s Best contest. This recognition reflects Max Dale’s commitment to delivering high-quality dining and staying connected to the community it serves.
“We’re thrilled to be voted Best Steakhouse,” says Danny Pickering, co-owner of Max Dale’s. “At our core, we are a steakhouse, and it feels great to be recognized in this category. It’s always rewarding when the community supports what we do.”
For decades, Max Dale’s has been a pillar of the local dining scene, offering exceptional steaks and other fine dining fare. The restaurant’s menu features timeless classics like their renowned prime rib, which has been a favorite since the 1970s. However, Danny and his team are equally proud of their other offerings, such as perfectly prepared short ribs, scallops, and salmon—elevated dishes that reflect the restaurant’s culinary expertise and dedication to excellence.
When asked why Max Dale’s has been voted Best Steakhouse, Danny attributes the win to their commitment to quality in every aspect of the business. “We are committed to the highest level of quality in our restaurant, whether it be the product, the cooking, or the service,” he explains.
At Max Dale’s, the
emphasis is on delivering elevated dinner cuisine, with a menu of scratchmade dishes that includes an array of steak, pork chops, seafood, and salads. Of course, no meal is complete without starters, and their famous blue cheese waffle fries are a must-try.
Max Dale’s history is rich with community connection and a passion for great food. Founded in 1951 by Max and Pauline Dale, the restaurant underwent a major transformation when the couple revamped their menu to include seafood, steak, and pork chops. A fire in 1976 threatened to end the Dale family’s legacy, but the restaurant was rebuilt and thrived once more, with Tony Pickering eventually taking ownership in 1982.
Today, Tony’s son Danny and nephew Paul continue to lead Max Dale’s with the same passion for fine dining and community engagement. Under their leadership, the restaurant has not only maintained its classic charm but also embraced innovation, offering gluten-free options and pushing culinary boundaries with new menu items.
Max Dale’s is now open seven days a week with extended hours after reducing operations during the pandemic. “We’re excited to be back to a daily schedule,” says Danny. “It’s great to share our meals with the community every day again.”
In addition to the main dining experience, Max Dale’s offers two private dining rooms and caters
for events, with customizable menus to meet each client’s needs. The Martini Lounge, open Thursday through Saturday, is another popular feature, serving gourmet bar food like prime rib dip and burgers, paired with craft cocktails and cold beers.
Max Dale’s remains the go-to destination for those craving a tender, juicy steak, maintaining its reputation as the top steakhouse in the Skagit Valley. Through dedication and innovation, the legacy of Max Dale’s Steak and Chop House lives on, honoring its rich history while embracing the future. Reserve your table today.
Skagit Roofing LLC: Professional Grade Roofing Since 1990
From humble beginnings to a powerhouse in the roofing industry, Skagit Roofing LLC has established itself as a leader in residential roof replacements across Skagit, Whatcom, Island, and Northern Snohomish Counties. What started as a one-person operation by Jim Hjelt nearly 35 years ago has blossomed into an award-winning team, recently voted Best Roofing Company in Skagit’s Best of the Best contest for the third consecutive year. “This 3-peat win is really something,” Jim shared about the Best Roofing Company award. “We appreciate all the folks who voted for us. Thank you, Skagit County!” Jim Hjelt, a Burlington native, grew up immersed in the construction world. His father, Dick Hjelt, worked for Bechtel Corporation, which led the family to move around the country before settling in Burlington in 1973. Jim’s first experience with roofing came as a teenager in the late 70s, carrying bundles of cedar shakes up ladders. By the end of that first week, he was installing alongside seasoned roofers—an experience that ignited his passion for the craft. At just 29 years old, and with more than a decade of experience under his belt, Jim decided to hang out his shingle, founding Skagit Roofing in 1990. From that point, the company has steadily grown, and
by 2015, Ty Price joined the team to help take the business to the next level. Today, the business employs 25 people and Ty serves as the general manager alongside Aryn Sherman and John Silvia, forming the heart of Skagit Roofing’s management team, with Jim still actively involved as director. With over 70 years of combined experience between Jim and Ty, Skagit Roofing has nurtured top-notch crews and continues to provide the kind of personal, caring service that customers have come to trust.
Skagit Roofing LLC’s success is built on a foundation of honesty, integrity, and a commitment to using the highest quality products available. The team prides itself on listening carefully to customers’ concerns and delivering cost-effective, long-lasting solutions. Whether you need a roof replacement, installation, or composite roofing, their highly trained staff ensures every customer receives top-tier service.
As certified installers of Malarkey, Pabco, Certainteed, and IKO shingles, Skagit Roofing offers a wide variety of materials to create customized roofs designed to fit your unique needs. Their team has provided over 7,000 homes with beautiful, long-lasting roofs, and the proof is in the results. From start to finish, their experienced crews ensure that your project stays on budget,
ahead of schedule, and with minimal disruption to your day-to-day life.
“We proudly work with a wide variety of highquality materials to ensure your roof will last,” said Jim. “We serve the homes in our community with honesty, integrity, and compassion, and our skilled team works tirelessly to keep our neighbors secure and dry.”
Skagit Roofing LLC is more than just a roofing company; it’s a service business committed to supporting the
community. With a bilingual team that includes Jim’s wife, Julieta, who joined in 2002, Skagit Roofing connects more deeply with its customers and crews. Julieta was born in Panama and her first language is Spanish, allowing the company to better serve a wider range of clients.
“Over the years, we’ve replaced thousands of roofs—some even twice— and we’re still going strong,” Jim explained. “We provide great jobs for our employees and great
roofs for our customers. We do whatever it takes to get the job done right.”

BECU changes financial lives, one member at a time
In 1935, new employees for The Boeing Company were required to purchase their own tools before they could start work. This was during the height of the Great Depression, when finding money to buy tools was an insurmountable burden for many prospective workers.
A Boeing employee, William Dodge, read an article in Readers Digest about the difference that credit unions were making across the world. Inspired, Dodge persuaded a group of Boeing employees to start their own credit union.
Since that initial cooperative effort, the financial organization that became known as BECU (Boeing Employees’ Credit Union) has grown to become one of the nation’s leading credit unions. Although its initial membership was comprised of Boeing employees (and later their family members), a 2002 charter change expanded its membership eligibility to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in the Evergreen State.
In 2017, BECU reached its million member milestone and introduced a new, simplified, and contemporary logo.
In August 2024, BECU opened its Burlington location after having been located inside the Mount Vernon Safeway store for 10 years. “The Burlington
BECU team embraces our company’s purpose and commitment to our members,” says branch manager Debbie Matson. “As a cooperative, we bring people together to improve the financial well-being of our members and their community.”
BECU members enjoy free access to a wide range of tools and services designed to improve their financial knowledge and support their financial goals. These products and services include free checking accounts, credit cards, a Financial Health Check, home improvement loans, business services, auto loans, personal loans, home loans,1 and first-time homebuyers’ grants.2
“We believe in offering our members competitive interest rates on loans, few fees, and many member benefits and discounts to help their savings grow,” says Matson. “Our commitment is that our BECU members will always experience the best value and service with complete trust.”
In addition to improving the financial lives of its credit union members, BECU benefits the communities in which they reside. In 1995, the BECU Foundation was established to recognize studentmembers who embody the “people helping people” philosophy
that inspired the credit union’s creation nearly 90 years ago. With the help of business partners, member donations, and fundraising activities, the foundation has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships, while its People Helping People Awards recognize and honor its members and the nonprofit organizations they support.
Every year, BECU provides each of its
team members with hours they can devote to volunteering for their favorite community organizations. Through its community giving initiatives, BECU helps sustain the vital work of organizations that support where its members live, work and play.
BECU’s Burlington location is open MondayFriday 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturdays 9:00am1:00pm. To learn more

Western Bud Burlington is “Skagit’s Best”
Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your strain!
Founded in 2017, Western Bud is
a licensed i502 cannabis retail chain serving the local community in Washington State. The company opened its flagship store location in the land of subdued excitement, Bellingham, and quickly became a local favorite.
By 2019 it had opened two more locations in Skagit Valley and Anacortes that have since grown their own following.
Western Bud takes pride in preserving the feel of the old-school (and less-than-legal) days of cannabis consumption while providing a high-end, modern dispensary experience. Its knowledgeable and friendly staff are dedicated to supporting small, local cannabis farms and offering a wide selection of high-quality products at surprisingly affordable prices. With a guest-first mindset, Western Bud aims to be the go-to dispensary where it feels like home and everybody knows your strain.
Between its store manager and budtenders, Western Bud Burlington has over 40 years of combined experience in customer service and industry knowledge.
Its staff understands that cannabis is an alternative medication for many patients. In fact, many of its staff come
from medical cannabis backgrounds and use it themselves for their personal health benefits.
“Nothing makes us happier than helping a patient transition off a potentially harmful medication and improve their quality of life,” says store manager Aubree Twedt. “We approach each customer with the same level of care and compassion, working as a dedicated
team to provide the best possible experience. That collaborative, patientfocused approach is what sets our cannabis shop apart.”
As with its other locations, Western Bud Burlington is distinguished by its bright green facade, but its interior is as unique and eclectic as the community it serves. Along with its guest-first mindset, a knowledgeable and
friendly staff, and a commitment to offer the best deals possible, Western Bud Burlington offers ATMs with no surcharge fees.
“Our business was voted Best of Skagit due to our unwavering dedication to excellence in all aspects of our operations,” says Twedt. “We prioritize customer satisfaction above all else, ensuring that every interaction with our business leaves
a positive and lasting impression. Our team goes above and beyond to deliver high-quality products/services and exceptional customer service, creating a memorable experience for each individual. Since we are open 365 days a year, we’re always here for you! Plus, we price match!”
Western Bud Burlington is open seven days a week (including holidays!) from 8am to 11:30pm.
Skagit Valley Burgers
John and Barbara Borders’ take on
Sedro-Woolley venue
Driving along Highway 20 just southwest of Sedro-Woolley, it’s hard to miss the 1940 steel caboose on the north side of road. It’s harder still to miss the mouthwatering aroma of flame broiled beef pouring out from its smoke stack.
Welcome to Skagit Valley Burgers, and a gastronomical experience that will leave you with a new appreciation for America’s favorite drivein staple.
Skagit Valley Burgers is what happens when a Cordon Bleu-trained chef with drive-in credentials and a working class pedigree sets out to reinterpret an American classic — not with a bunch of froufrou ingredients or fusion nonsense, but with an exquisite attention to detail and a whole lot of love. The result is a hamburger that is so much more than the sum of its parts. In the words of one customer review, “Skagit Valley Burgers is to the hamburger what Michael Jordan is to basketball. It redefines the genre.”
While chef and owner
John Borders learned his culinary skills from the world famous Le Cordon Bleu institute, he chose to apply them not to haute cuisine, but to hamburgers that have received over the top
accolades since he and his wife Barbara opened their caboose-turned-drive-in twelve years ago.
“We use only 100% grass-fed beef for our hamburger patties — not just because it’s healthier, but because beef just tastes better when cows eat what they were designed by nature to consume: grass…not grain,” Barbara Borders explains. “We make sure
that nothing gets between your taste buds and our hamburger patties but the perfect mix of seasonings, then we grill them to perfection over an open flame.”
Burgers this epic need a great supporting cast — and that starts with what goes on them: farm fresh lettuce, thick ripe tomato slices, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and raw onions for the
socially confident. Sides include the Borders’ infamous garlic fries, bacon ranch jalapeño fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings that rate as many stars as the burgers they compliment. For a walk on the wild side you can order the fried pickles. For those who are able to show a bit more restraint, there’s the modestly named Skagit Green Salad: spring
greens, feta, candied pecans, cranberries, fresh apple and red onion, served with house-made champagne vinaigrette.
Skagit Valley Burgers is open Wednesday 11am-7pm, Thursday 11am-3pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 11am7:30pm. You can view their complete and mouth watering menu at www. skagitvalleyburgers.com
Experience True Wellness and Relaxation at The Apothecary Spa
A Holistic Approach to Wellness in Two Beautiful Skagit Locations
Voted Best Spa in Skagit County, The Apothecary Spa has become synonymous with relaxation, rejuvenation, and holistic wellness. With two locations in Anacortes and Burlington, The Apothecary Spa offers an array of wellness services, including massages, facials, body treatments, and more. What truly sets The Apothecary Spa apart is not just its range of services but the unique spa experiences and carefully tailored products designed to meet the needs of each client, with an unmatched attention to detail that defines every treatment and interaction. Whether you’re seeking the calming warmth of a eucalyptus steam room in Anacortes or the restorative benefits of a salt room or infrared sauna in Burlington, the spa offers something special at each location.
Anna Holm’s journey as a spa owner began in 2009 when she worked as a receptionist at the Chrysalis at the Majestic while attending esthetics school. After graduating, she became an esthetician at the spa and, in 2011, was presented with the opportunity to purchase the business. Anna renamed it “The Apothecary Spa”, and, with her husband Ben by her side, has grown the spa into the award-winning establishment it is today. Since 2011, The Apothecary Spa has flourished into a
cherished community haven, offering a serene retreat for wellness and relaxation in Skagit County. In 2017, the couple opened their second location in Burlington, and in 2020, they launched Wild Valley Apothecary, a retail shop offering bulk herbs, teas, spices, housewares, and locally made gifts. “Our goal has always been to offer holistic wellness through therapeutic services and products that enhance our clients’ well-being. Our expansion has been rooted in a deep passion for wellness and love for the community, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built,” says Anna.
Both locations are steeped in history, adding a unique charm to the wellness experience. The Anacortes location is housed in the historic Majestic Inn, which dates back to 1890 when it was originally a mercantile. It survived two major fires and was restored to its original charm. “It’s an honor to be part of such a storied building with deep roots in the community,” shared Anna. The Burlington location, in the old Knutzen Building, blends modern spa features with the charm of a historic structure, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere for guests.
Anna’s dedication to wellness extends beyond the spa doors. The Apothecary Spa has always prioritized supporting the local community, from participating in events
and donating to auctions to volunteering time for various causes. Anna believes this community spirit, combined with a dedication to excellent service, played a significant role in earning the title of Skagit’s Best Spa. At the heart of The Apothecary Spa is a commitment to creating meaningful client experiences. “We focus on excellent customer service, high-quality organic skincare products, and ensuring our guests feel relaxed and rejuvenated,” Anna explains. The spa’s diverse team of 18 service professionals brings a wealth of knowledge
and certifications, allowing for personalized treatments tailored to each client’s needs. “Our top priority is delivering excellent customer service,” Anna adds. “We want everyone who enters our spa to feel welcome, cared for, and listened to.” This ethos of care extends to the spa’s long-serving employees.
The close-knit, supportive environment behind the scenes enhances the client experience with the passion and professionalism each team member brings.
With over 30 awards to their name, The Apothecary Spa continues to innovate while staying true to its roots. As The
Apothecary Spa celebrates their Best of Skagit win, Anna is already looking ahead to new ways to enhance client experiences and give back to the community that has supported them over the years. “I’m grateful for the support we’ve received from the local community,” Anna reflects. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to continue growing alongside Skagit County.”
The Apothecary Spa invites you to experience the award-winning care that has made them the best spa in Skagit County. Anna and her team look forward to serving you.

Award-Winning Stores: A Family Affair!
The Steen family, owners of Holiday Sports and Holiday Market, are thrilled to have been named Best Sporting Goods/Outdoor Store AND Best Convenience Store in their respective categories. These awards are a testament to the family’s commitment to outstanding customer service, exceptional product knowledge, and old-fashioned care for the community that they serve as operators of local businesses.
Holiday Market and Holiday Sports have been part of the Skagit Landscape for 40 Years!
It all started when Owner Gary Steen visited Skagit County as a teenager to hunt ducks, fish, hike and camp. He loved it here! So, when a piece of property became available in Burlington, he and his wife Diane jumped on it.
Holiday Market opened just West of I-5 on Highway 20 back in 1984. It began as a Chevron gas station and convenience store. The Steens quickly began adding items that customers requested, especially bait and tackle.
“We soon had a large fishing department, and it grew from there,” says Diane. To accommodate the overflow of items, the Steens expanded to a smaller building behind the market to accommodate all the fishing gear. Holiday Sports was born.
Both businesses continued to grow until 2008 when the DOT widened Highway 20 and
configured the south bound off-ramp. The original Holiday Market was demolished for “progress.” Yet the Steens turned the situation from lemons to lemonade.
The couple decided to develop a building already on the property to retail standards and expanded the products they offered with the new larger space. Holiday Sports began carrying the best brands and hard-to-find local brands for fishing, crabbing, related boating, camping, outdoor footwear, and clothing.
The store has also become a favorite stop to get all your fishing and hunting licenses.
The addition of Skagit Arms came in 2016, operated by son Anthon Steen. The expansion created an even wider range of goods for the outdoor sports enthusiast.
Meanwhile, as the road widening had taken out the gas station, it was an opportunity to reimagine a new convenience store with a gas station and espresso drive thru. The new Holiday Market opened in 2018 with daughter Carrie Holmes at the helm. The four family members (Gary, Diane, Carrie, and Anthon) participated in planning, designing, and overseeing the construction.
Holiday Market now has easy access to Highway 20 from both directions. The fueling station features gasoline, diesel, and nonethanol. The market’s fresh, hot “eat on the go” breakfast items are super popular, and the
friendly staff will have you back on the road in no time. For lunch, the hot and cold deli options are customer favorites.
The modern store also offers everything you’d expect, from tasty snacks to a great soda fountain selection.
The newest addition to the Steen complex is Angler’s Coffee. It’s managed by Carrie’s daughter, Rachel Hamilton (a former Sedro Woolley Rodeo Queen), and is staffed by her sister Macee Holmes, when she’s not attending Skagit Valley College or playing on the Women’s soccer team.
The Steen family’s deep roots in the community, combined with their
unwavering commitment to quality and service, set them apart from larger chain stores. “We’re not box stores, and we’re proud of it,” said Diane. “We offer the best brands in the business at competitive prices. We carry Northwest brands you won’t find at chain stores, and we take pride in that.” Diane describes Holiday Sports as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts to share stories, gather information, and prepare for their next adventure. Staff members are happy to offer advice on everything from the best local fishing spots to the latest camping gear. And over at Holiday Market, Carrie and her crew have the same customer care
attitude. They love to serve tasty food, wellpriced gasoline, and espresso stand favorites in a manner that exceeds expectations.
Winning the Best Sporting Goods/Outdoor Store award AND the Best Convenience Store award in the Skagit’s Best contest is especially meaningful to the Steens, because it’s an honor that comes directly from their customers.
“It’s truly exciting to see that our hard work is appreciated,” said Diane. “We’re always trying to provide good service, and the products people need. The fact that the community took the time to vote for us means a lot.”
There is a very good reason that the name of Danya Wolf’s full-service real estate company includes the word “Tradition” — it has been in the business of helping Skagitionians buy and sell homes for nearly 90 years.
Danya’s grandmother, Beatrice Lee Johnson, was born and raised on Fir Island, where she and her brothers and sisters attended Skagit City School (which still stands on Moore Road in Conway). She earned her real estate license in 1936 in order to assist her husband, Arthur E. Johnson, in their real estate company, Johnson Realty. Their sons, Elliott and Keith, followed in their footsteps, with granddaughter Danya following in 1976.

Ronk Brothers Heating, Cooling, and Electrical has once again been voted the Best of Skagit, and this recognition means far more to the team than a title—it’s a testament to their unwavering commitment to the community they have proudly served since 1971. Owned by Brian Ronk, the company has been a cornerstone of Skagit County for over five decades, evolving from a family-founded business into an industry leader in residential heating, cooling, and electrical services.
For Brian, receiving this accolade is a humbling experience. “Being voted Best of Skagit is more than just an honor — it’s a reflection of our deep commitment to not only our customers but the community we proudly serve,” says Brian. “We put our customers first, but our mission goes beyond great service. We believe in making a real difference in the lives of those around us. Every interaction, every service we provide is an opportunity to strengthen and uplift our community. We’re humbled by this award, and it motivates us to keep striving to be
a positive force in the community we love.”

Since opening its first clinic in Bellingham, WA in 1995 under Dr. Eddie Hansen, Natural Way Chiropractic has introduced its “Natural Way Healing System” across eight clinic locations in Western Washington, and each month thousands of patients rely on its services to get back to and maintain an active lifestyle.
Natural Way
Chiropractic’s Mount Vernon clinic offers a variety of chiropractic methods tailored to the specific needs of its patients, but all approaches are based on rigorous science. Day one of a patient’s visit begins with neural scans, x-rays, and orthopedic and neurologic testing for a proper diagnosis on which to base subsequent treatment.
The foundation of Natural Way Chiropractic’s science-based approach is its belief that our brains control everything that happens within our bodies, and that communication takes place through the spinal cord and the nerves
that come out of it. Any pressure or interference with that communication results in the impairment of bodily function.
Chiropractic care releases interference within that system so the body and brain can function at 100 percent potential.
Natural Way
Chiropractic’s Mount Vernon clinic is headed up by doctors John Rowley and Carter Brown. Dr. Rowley received is degree in chiropractic medicine from the University of Western States, and Dr. Brown is a graduate of Life West Chiropractic College. Both are steadfastly dedicated to providing superior healthcare solutions paired with outstanding customer service, and they share the conviction that true health is much more than just being free from pain—it’s a holistic state of well-being.
In addition to providing a variety of chiropractic methodologies based on state-of-the-art technologies, the Mount Vernon clinic also offers massage services — all of which are designed to

ensure that patients get not only amazing results, but amazing customer service as well.
Natural Way Chiropractic of Mount Vernon is proud to be a 100 percent employee owned business, and one that takes an active part in the life of its community. The clinic is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8am-6pm; Tuesday 2-6pm; and Thursday 8am-12pm.
Louis Auto & Residential Glass: nearly a century strong and still evolving
The name of the company may say “auto,” but its expertise extends to residential, marine, and RV as well
Since 1929, Louis Auto & Residential Glass has been the leading auto glass company serving Northwest Washington. For any business to have thrived for nearly a century is impressive enough, but an even greater accomplishment is the fact that the company is heading into its fifth generation of ownership by the same family.
Louis Adelstein founded Louis Auto Parts in 1929 — less than three decades after the first automobiles rolled off the Ford Motor Company assembly line.
As cars quickly multiplied, the company evolved into an auto glass business.
When Louis passed away in 1954, his son Mel took over ownership of the company. He was succeeded by his son Rick, who currently serves as president. Rick’s children, Carrie, Lindsey, and Ari, represent the fourth generation of ownership.
“It’s been such a blessing to be able to go to work each day and see my children,” says Rick.
“And I’m confident my grandchildren will take this business into the future. I love the fact that we have several generations of customers as well, and that people often share their memories of my father. A customer in her nineties once told me a story about my grandfather, who I barely remembered as a child. It means a lot that our family has touched so many lives in our community over the years.”
Louis Auto & Residential Glass offers an array of products and services that address virtually every aspect of automotive glass: rock chip repair, windshield, side glass, and back glass replacement, window tinting, and headlight restoration.
In addition to automotive glass, Louis Auto & Residential Glass also handles marine and RV glass repair and replacement — and as the company’s name implies, its glass technicians can install windows for homes and commercial buildings with brands such as Cascade Windows, The Coeur d’Alene Window Company and Prime Window Systems. Other applications include showers, windows, and custom-cut glass.
Louis Auto & Residential Glass is headquartered in Bellingham, where it has been in the same building since 1941, and has since expanded to Lynden and Mount Vernon. Over the decades that it has been in business it has adapted to major changes in glass technology — particularly with the incorporation of electronics in windshield engineering. What has remained unchanged, however, has been the company’s commitment to its customers.
“Our customers have always been and will continue to be our top priority,” says Carrie Adelstein. “Going above and beyond is part of our commitment, and we’re truly grateful that our customers recognize this.
Their support in voting us the ‘Best in Skagit’ means the world to us.”
In 2011, Louis Auto & Residential Glass was honored as a Chamber of Commerce “Large Business of the Year,” but for many in the Skagit Valley and beyond, the company’s logo is most often associated with the many ways in which it gives back to its communities.
“Over the years we’ve sponsored pretty much every 4-H kid who ever came to us with an animal they wanted to raise,” says Rick. “Rather than making large donations to a few organizations, we try to give something to as many as possible. We have a lot to be grateful for.”
Louis Auto & Residential Glass offers services from three locations in Mount Vernon, Bellingham, and Lynden. Its hours of operation are MondayFriday, 8am - 5:30pm and Saturday, 9am - 12pm.

Primal Tree Service is known for its affordability, offering price matching and payment plans for clients who need flexibility.

Doggy Come Play Celebrates Two Decades of Unmatched Care and Fun for Dogs in Skagit County
Where Dogs Are Treated Like Family
Doggy Come Play, a family-owned boarding and day care facility, has been voted Best Pet Kennel/Boarding/Day Care in Skagit County.
Since opening in 1994, owners Joan Crane, David Crane, and Aaron Curbow have built a reputation for offering a safe, fun, and nurturing environment where dogs can play, relax, and make other doggy friends. For more than two decades, their innovative approach to dog care has set Doggy Come Play apart from the competition.
The idea behind Doggy Come Play began with a simple, yet powerful concept: dogs deserve more than just a kennel. Back in 1994, while working as a dog trainer, Joan Crane recognized a common complaint from her clients—they didn’t like leaving their dogs in traditional boarding facilities, where dogs were often confined to kennel runs for the entire stay. Joan, thinking outside the box, believed that dogs could play together safely if managed correctly.
This belief became the foundation of Colony Mountain Critter Sitters, which later evolved into Doggy Come Play.
“We started a boarding facility that didn’t leave dogs in kennels all day but allowed them to play in yards with other
dogs,” Joan explained. This approach has been a game-changer, providing dogs with social interaction, mental stimulation, and a lot of fun during their stay. The result? Happy, healthy dogs who can’t wait to come back.
Doggy Come Play offers both day care and boarding services, ensuring that every dog is treated like family.
Whether dogs are staying for the day or spending the night, they enjoy a full day of free-roaming play, naps, and human affection. Dogs are grouped by size—small dogs (up to 25 pounds) and big dogs (30 pounds and up)—to ensure safety and comfort for all while playing in the yard.
“Dogs can simply be dogs here,” says Joan. “They play freely, rest when they want to, and always go home happy and healthy.”
The facility prides itself on excellent customer service, cleanliness, and a highly trained staff that goes above and beyond to care for every dog as if it were their own. With services like baths, nail trims, and even engraved name tags, Doggy Come Play takes care of all the details to keep your furry friends comfortable and well-cared for.
The staff celebrates dog birthdays by request, complete with photo shoots, dress-up fun,
and treats. Doggy Come Play’s team also posts daily photos on their Facebook page, allowing clients to see their dogs in action and stay connected with their furry family members throughout the day. Additionally, the facility names a “Dog of the Month” for both small and large dogs, further celebrating the unique personalities of their canine visitors. The team regularly works with professional dog trainers, such as Nancy Baer from Snohomish, to enhance their knowledge of dog behavior and improve the experience for both
dogs and owners. This dedication to continued education ensures that every dog is cared for with the highest level of expertise. Additionally, the business offers day care package deals to help make their services more affordable for regular clients. Doggy Come Play is not just a business—it’s a community. The facility actively supports local initiatives, and even commemorates the dogs that have passed away with dog houses displayed on their lobby walls, creating a lasting tribute to beloved pets.
For over 20 years,
Doggy Come Play has been more than just a pet boarding and day care facility—it’s a place where dogs feel at home.
Joan, David, Aaron, and their dedicated team are committed to providing top-tier care in a friendly, welcoming environment.
“We treat every dog like they’re our own,” Joan says proudly. This approach is why Doggy Come Play has earned the trust of so many families. If you’re looking for a safe, loving, and playful environment for your dog, give Doggy Come Play a call. They can’t wait to welcome your pet into their family!
