Great Futures Gala Program Guide

Page 1

Friends,

For years our Auction has been a cornerstone of philanthropy in Skagit County. You have supported our kids, and in the process, raised nearly $2 million at the event throughout our history. The need remains greater than ever, with our community Clubhouses in Anacortes, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley. In striving to be the strongest organization possible so children in Skagit County are best served, each and every event and fundraiser conducted goes through a feedback, reflections, and review process. After many years, conversations began in earnest last fall in consideration of moving away from a traditional auction towards an event that would bring even more value to our sponsors, attendees, and as a result, our Clubs. With the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County earning accolades for several keys areas, Boys & Girls Clubs of America took notice, and as a result, the opportunity to engage a Club Alum and notable celebrity came to be. After an in-depth review and vigorous discussion, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to engage a different strategy in our biggest fundraiser, held each fall. From that, the “Great Futures Gala was born. I am excited to introduce our new Gala format, in hopes that you will find inspiration in the words of a Boys and Girls Club Alum, and see first-hand the impact Clubs have on our youth. 2

Our Club staff and volunteers work to produce three priority outcomes in each member: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. It is from those outcomes that each child and teen, ages 6-18, gains access to opportunities ensuring their own Great Future. When you support our kids tonight through your contributions and investment, you affect change in the life of youth who need us most. Thank you to all our sponsors, auction contributors, corporate underwriters, and attendees for responding to the great need in Skagit County. Your leadership and engagement makes it possible for positive impact to occur each and every day. Let’s make tonight one to remember for a long time to come! Tina Asp Image360 Gala Committee Chair

Evander Holyfield

Born on October 19, 1962, in Atmore, Alabama, Evander is often referred to as “the Real Deal,” Holyfield; five-time world champion, and the only four-time world heavyweight champion. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and took boxing lessons as a child at the local Boys & Girls Club. He competed as an amateur in the Golden Gloves competitions in the early 1980s. After winning a national Golden Gloves Championship in 1984, Holyfield made the U.S. Olympic team where he received the bronze medal. After the Olympics, Holyfield turned professional and won the World Boxing Association’s (WBA) World Cruiserweight title in 1986 by defeating the reigning champion Dwight Qawi. Holyfield trained hard to become big enough and strong enough to compete as a heavyweight fighter. In 1990, he became Heavyweight Champion of the World, defeating James “Buster” Douglas, the holder of the WBA, International Boxing Federation (IBF), and World Boxing Council (WBC) championship titles. Holyfield took out Douglas in only seven minutes. Holyfield’s intense rivalry with boxer Riddick Bowe began in the early 1990s when he suffered a big defeat to Bowe in 1992, losing his title. It was his first loss in twenty-nine professional fights. After briefly contemplating retirement, Holyfield was back in the ring and anxious to reclaim his 6

title. He did just that when he got his rematch with Bowe in 1993, winning by decision. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County are honored to welcome Mr. Holyfield, as we kickoff our reimagined fall event, the “Great Futures Gala”. Clubs make a unique difference in the lives of youth we serve, more than 1,700 in direct programs this year. To accomplish this, significant resources must be secured. Our community has come to expect greatness at Club events, and tonight will be no different.

Gee Scott

Gee Scott can be heard on 710ESPN Seattle weekdays from 10:00am to Noon. In 1996, following his attendance at Tri-State University on a Basketball Scholarship. In 1996, Mr. Scott made his way to the west coast and began work with a wholesale company in San Diego conducting door-to-door sales. Taking lessons learned from that sales job, it wouldn’t be long before he landed in Seattle, and didn’t take no for an answer when asking Seattle Seahawks players to clean their vehicles. With that yes in 2003, he began building his network and connections, and proving his work ethic. Twelve years later it would lead to his big break in Radio. Gee has a special connection to Clubs, as his own father was a member in his youth. 7
