Dearest All… I am constantly inspired and uplifted by the generosity of the St. James’ Community. In fact, I love this time of year when we craft the annual report because it impels me to take a moment to savor and celebrate the many kinds of giving that make this school unique. You have supported us in our darkest hours and in the sheer happiness of every old tradition and new event. The sight of our first musical last year, Peter Pan, fully staged and sparkling with more than fifty of St. James’ little darlings all decked out as pirates and mermaids, Indians and “lost boys” brought such joy to our hearts. It took at least fifty parents to make that show a reality, but there has never been a finer Never-Never Land or a happier gaggle of thespians basking in the footlights. Then just a month later, your outpouring of compassion following the loss of our student James Lee and parent Claudia Rogers shone like an incandescent beacon lighting our way through the labyrinth of our dark, communal pain. You were there with us every step of the way.

Message from Head of School

The spring gala caught us up in a magical web of acrobats shinnying up silken ropes above our heads and diving into the ether with wild abandon. And then you gave with your own wild abandon in the auction …setting an all-time record for generosity as you funded a new program for performing arts including the Colburn/St. James’ Band, Shakespeare studies at every grade level, dance classes for every child, and yet another musical production. We left that evening in Hollywood so much richer… in spirit and community, but in resources as well. You gave us the means to continue our Leadership Program, presented us with he gift of abundant new technology, made possible the continuation of our Rosetta Stone program, and made us feel like kings and queens before the night was done. At the beginning of the school year, we introduced the theme “Be…” We told the children, “Be yourself; “ “Be courageous;” “Be happy;” Be confident;” “Be the best that you can be.” And somewhere along the way, all of you must have decided to “Be…generous to St. James.’” Thank you. I’m so glad you were. The children here are so blessed to have you…and so, my dears, am I. I’m deeply blessed and honored.

Message from Head of School

With the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year at St. James,’ your Board of Trustees celebrated the second year of Deborah David’s tenure as our brilliant and tireless Head of School. The list of accomplishments for such a short period of time is nothing short of remarkable; a new math curriculum, Smartboards in nearly every classroom and ipads in kindergarten, our first ever musical theater production, new turf for our playground, and a new and expanded preschool, to name just a few. Few partnerships can be more rewarding than that of a visionary Head of School, a dedicated and willing faculty, a fully supportive and skilled Board of Trustees, and last but not least, a completely engaged and most generous parent community. It’s a rare moment when we can say we’re all in sync, but I believe we’re there, and ready to continue the good work to make St. James’ the best it can be. Read on and take a moment to celebrate all that YOU have done this past year, and then let’s get back to work for 20132014! Momentum is with us, and Debbi has a long list of great ideas! With sincere thanks,

Heidi McLean Board President 3

2012-2013 was a year of extraordinary achievements at St. James’. Our K-2nd Grade teachers jumped feet first into the conquering of Singapore Math instruction to the great benefit of our students. The Spanish Language program blossomed through the use of the Rosetta Stone program, and a generous gift made our dream of a new astroturf for our sports field a reality. St. James’ welcomed back alumni with our first Alumni Breakfast, and advancements were made in Performing Arts, Global Health, Leadership, and Service Learning. The power of your support can be seen in the smiling faces of our students.

At St. James’, we strive to produce critical thinkers who will make significant contributions to our communities, both locally and globally. We provide a challenging academic curriculum that prepares students to be successful at competitive secondary schools and in their chosen careers. Our 2013 graduates were prime examples of global citizens whose character, kindness, academic excellence, and sense of camaraderie was infectious. Our graduates are now shining students at some of the best independent schools in the city, including Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, and Campbell Hall, just to name a few.

Be Responsible

Statement of Operating Income

St. James' School enjoyed a good year financially thanks to high enrollment and generous donations. With help from the new and enlarged Preschool, tuition revenues rose 16% and donations of all kinds (including the surplus from the very successful special event) rose 21 %. Expenses, including the costs of some new programs, rose 7%. As a result, the school was able to report an operating surplus (before depreciation and changes in the value of investments) of $ 731,770. While this is a healthy result, the school needs to rebuild its reserves which were depleted by the cost of the new Preschool. Near the end of the year, St. James’ was offered a generous interest-free loan to buy a house for the Head of School. The Board of Trustees had long been concerned that the cost of housing in Los Angeles deterred many excellent Head of School candidates from applying and decided, with the full support of the St. James’ Church Vestry, that this was a rare opportunity to deal with this problem and make an investment of great long term value. However, this loan will have to be repaid over the next ten years. The school also faces the need to refurbish some of its older facilities. It is therefore essential that St. James’ School continues to generate operating surpluses. We are extremely grateful for the continuing generous support of parents and other members of the St. James' School community.

This year marked extraordinary accomplishments for our school. We reached 96% participation from our parent community, joining our faculty, staff, Board of Trustees and Church Vestry’s 100%. We also raised over $600,000 in Annual Fund revenue. Reaching this goal was the result of countless acts of generosity, unwavering commitment to galvanizing our school community, and a groundswell of enthusiasm for St. James’ School. Annual Fund proceeds have enabled us to build upon things we value like cutting-edge technology, an inspiring arts curriculum, innovative educational programs, professional development for our wonderful faculty, support for our core value of tuition assistance, and upgrades in our facilities such as our new Astroturf field.

Parent Association The Parent Association is the support group that keeps the wheels at St. James’ turning. We revel in the extraordinary parent participation that we are so blessed with. The list of Parent Association responsibilities spans past Family Camp Weekend, In-N-Out Burger, and teacher wish lists. Working with faculty, staff, and students, the Parent Association enriches the lives of everyone at St. James’ through fundraisers, volunteer activities, and an overall promotion of friendships among parents. Pancake Breakfast

African American Heritage Month

This annual event broke records once again thanks to the leadership of the incomparable, Seth Horowitz, outstanding food from Neal and Amy Fraser’s kitchen at BLD, and coffee courtesy of Craig Min at LAMILL Coffee.

Throughout the month of February, the Parent Association was the shining leader in producing events dedicated to the celebration of African American Heritage. Skate Night was a hit with over 125 participants in attendance. Parents and students showed their double dutch skills at recess, and students blessed us with their gorgeous voices through the Gospel Choir at chapel. Parents treated St. James’ faculty and each other in the annual “Taste of Soul” lunch. This month long celebration is vitally important to us at St. James’ as we strive to always learn about and embrace our community full of different cultures.

The St. James’ Leadership Program emerged this year with students in K-6th working to develop leadership skills which they utilized in project work, tackling real-world issues in the Los Angeles Community. Students met with experts in the fields of human rights, environmental activism, and animal welfare. They then worked in each area through student led projects. Students partnered with Pasadena City College to build a rooftop aquaponics garden, strengthened our relationship with St. James’ Church by building an eco-friendly Turtle Sanctuary, and made friendships at St. James’ Manor, a retirement community near the school. Within their own student body, they raised money to adopt a pig, held a “Healthy Snack Bake Sale” as a stand against childhood obesity, and sponsored a brown bag informative lunch on solar energy among other projects. The year culminated in an inspiring Showcase of their work.

Performing arts programs were one of the highlights at St. James’ this year in the form of our first ever theatrical production, Peter Pan. Thanks to the outstanding financial and creative leadership of parents Joe Davidson and Beth Kawaja, and under the direction of John Staley, nearly 50 students lit up the stage as the mermaids, Indians, and lost boys of Never-Neverland. This step into the arts is a catalyst for what will come in the 2013-2014 school year.

Service Learning took on a major role at St. James’ this year. As a school, we worked to raise needed items for the Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen at St. James’ Episcopal Church, coming together with them during lent to collectively raise $6,158. Additionally, each grade level took on a project of their own including collecting books for the Good Shepherd facility, adopting families in need for Christmas, assisting at Pasadena Humane Society, and raising money to buy school supplies, first aide supplies, and water purifiers for our sister school in Haiti. As we focused on our community, we were able to strengthen our own bonds with one another and with our Church.
