St. Joseph Orphanage is a comprehensive behavioral health and educational treatment agency that helps children and their families on the road to recovery and success.

About Us

For more than 189 years, St. Joseph Orphanage has provided hope and healing for children and families throughout Southwest Ohio. We care for more than 4,300 children and families each year who are struggling with mental health and behavioral concerns, often due to abuse, neglect, or other sources of trauma.

As we close our 189th year of serving some of the most vulnerable children and their families in our region, it is interesting to reflect on how much we have changed over the years to meet the needs of our community and the continually changing landscape of those needs and of the care we deliver.

We began when the Sisters of Charity answered the call of Bishop Edward Fenwick in 1829 to serve children orphaned by the cholera epidemic. Over the years, we continued to change in response to the needs of the children and families we serve, becoming a certified mental health center in 1990 and moving from an institutionalized care model to placing children in loving foster homes, serving children in schools, and helping families in their communities. Today, we serve over 4,300 children and families annually in 10 counties across Greater Southwestern Ohio.

We meet children and families where they need us the most, from temporary residential treatment to directly working with them in their homes.

We are so lucky to have a dedicated team of professional caregivers who are willing to adapt to change, whether it’s new and creative treatment models or just being there when families are impacted by trauma.

We will continue to be forward thinking as we prepare for our future and to fulfill the promise we have kept throughout our agency’s history—to provide a safe, secure environment that enables children and families to heal and move ahead on their road to recovery and success.

Seasons of Change Throughout The Years

S

t. Joseph Orphanage has always responded to the needs of the times, and we’ve moved through many seasons of change. Now, as we approach our 190th birthday, our dedication to meeting the needs of the children, families, and

communities we serve has never been stronger. We take pride in our heritage of caring, and we look forward to providing innovative and excellent behavioral health and educational treatment to young people for many seasons to come.

2018 – SJO serves a record 4,387 children, young adults, and families.

Our history has made us who we are today.

2013 – SJO opens a Medication Management Clinic.

1829 – The Sisters of Charity open a residence in downtown Cincinnati for girls orphaned by cholera epidemics, natural disasters, and poverty.

1990 – The Ohio Department of Mental Health certifies SJO as a Mental Health Center.

1992 – The first foster child is admitted to SJO’s new foster care program.

2015 – The Crisis Stabilization Unit relocates to Altercrest. SJO implements Open Access walk-in hours at its Villa and Butler County locations.

2002 – The Villa campus opens a charter school for cognitively challenged children.

1852 – Archbishop Purcell officially establishes the orphanage as St. Joseph Orphanage (SJO).

2012 – SJO establishes its Independent Living Program for youth transitioning to adulthood.

1976 – SJO assumes the operation of its 45-acre Altercrest campus near Coney Island.

1902 – A total of 500 boys and girls reside at SJO.

1962 – SJO relocates to its current 40-acre Villa campus in Green Township.

1995 – SJO opens the region’s first facility-based, secure Crisis Stabilization Unit at Villa and opens a charter school at Altercrest.

2005 – SJO receives national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

1999 – SJO initiates a National Youth Project Using Minibikes (NYPUM) program at Altercrest.

After two years of hard work, SJO was ready when Ohio’s Medicaid program transitioned to a managed care model on January 1, 2018. The sweeping change required behavioral health agencies to adopt a completely new clinical documentation and billing code system, and every facet of SJO was affected. Our success in navigating Medicaid redesign resulted in seamless care for our clients throughout the transition and earned SJO the 2018 Partnership Award from Qualifacts, our electronic health record provider.

Growing Leaders SJO’s new Leadership Academy graduated its first crop of leaders this past June and is a key component of our evolving culture. “We believe that leadership is a skill, not a position,” said Jodi Landers, SJO’s Chief People Officer.

A total of 15 SJO employees from all levels of the organization were selected to participate in the nine-month program after being nominated

by their supervisors. They took part in monthly learning sessions on topics such as presentation skills, coaching, engagement, communication, and organizational culture and received mentoring from SJO’s executive team and board. SJO’s 2nd Annual Leadership Academy commenced in September 2018 with a new crop of leaders who are eager to hone their leadership skills.

WHAT A YEAR! HARVESTING ACCOMPLISHMENTS Providing Client-Focused,Trauma-Informed Care

Enhancing Access to Care and Medication Management

Our agency-wide Trauma-Informed Care Initiative is helping SJO better serve youth who have experienced trauma. After partnering with Finding Hope Consulting, LLC in 2017 to conduct a staff survey and focus groups that identified ways to make our services more trauma-responsive, we have spent 2018 working to incorporate trauma-informed care throughout our services, departments, and agency culture. This has been done through continual staff education efforts and programmatic and policy improvements. Our Outpatient Services staff also participated in an eight-month series of trainings that qualified many of them for TraumaResponsive Care Certification from the Tristate Trauma Network. In addition, SJO staff conducted trauma-focused outreach at several area schools, delivering presentations that highlighted how trauma affects students.

Meeting Needs Through Our Residential Programs Our Crisis Stabilization Unit and Independent Living programs served 133 young people. De-escalation techniques and rapport-building enabled the Crisis Stabilization Unit to decrease the use of physical interventions and restraints by 54%. SJO also opened a new residential program—our Emergency Placement Program (EPP)—in response to Ohio’s opioid crisis. The EPP provides a safe, short-term, therapeutic living environment for children who have been removed from their homes due to a household emergency or crisis.

We continued to offer Open Access walk-in hours at our Villa and Butler County campuses for new outpatient mental health clients and for medication management services. Children and families can quickly access these services without an appointment.

Delivering Outpatient Services Throughout the Region SJO’s Outpatient Services department provided therapy and case management to clients in 10 counties within Southwest Ohio. In addition, SJO therapists were embedded in 28 schools throughout the region where they provided on-site therapy and case management. At three of those schools, SJO also provided partial hospitalization programs. During fiscal year 2018, Outpatient Services staff not only took part in trauma-informed care training but also completed training in solution-focused therapy.

Raising the Bar in Our Day Treatment and Educational Programs The year yielded impressive academic and behavioral gains at our elementary/middle school (at the Villa campus) and high school (at the Altercrest campus). A total of 87% of students improved their reading scores, 86% achieved higher writing and math scores, and 83% demonstrated better behavior. The growing use of educational technology, including iPads and smart boards, helped keep students engaged and aided teachers in tracking their progress. The implementation of Positive Behavior Supports helped improve behavior in the classroom, which led to higher academic success. School spirit also soared with the introduction of school mascots—the Villa Bulldogs and the Altercrest Knights!

Coordinating Loving Foster Care

Our Medication Management Program served 3,215 youth.

SJO’s foster care program licensed 11 new foster homes, including providing training to prospective foster parents, and served as an ongoing support and resource for these dedicated families. We also coordinated the placement of 184 children in safe, loving foster homes in Southwest Ohio.

This year, 105 children attended our elementary/ middle school, and 55 young people attended our high school.

Riding Toward a Brighter Future

Completing Their First Official Season The St. Joseph Altercrest Knights Basketball Team completed its first official season, playing a total of 17 games. Team members demonstrated improved behavior and school attendance and also gained leadership skills and self-confidence.

Since 1999, SJO has had the only National Youth Project Using Minibikes (NYPUM) program in the two-state area of Ohio and Kentucky. Youth earn the privilege of riding Honda minibikes by meeting behavioral and academic goals and abiding by safety standards and rules. They also gain positive adult role models and experience healthy peer relationships. This powerful combination motivates youth to make positive changes in their lives, and they acquire a new set of life-enhancing values and increased self-esteem.

Patrick collaborated with Citi colleagues Joe Leonard and Kallista Foster to put together one of the best SJO Field Days ever in May 2018. The event highlighted the importance of teamwork, and SJO’s kids had a great time taking part in kickball, volleyball, relay races, jump rope contests, and much more.

However, Patrick’s commitment to SJO didn’t end there. He also serves as Vice President of SJO’s Young Professionals Board, SJO LEAD, and helps organize fundraising events and quarterly meals for SJO’s kids. At Citi, he spearheads a holiday giving tree that benefits the children we serve. In June 2018, Patrick’s involvement with SJO inspired his fellow Citi employees to direct $10,000 of their employee discretionary giving to the kids at SJO.

Exploring the Great Outdoors The Outdoor Adventure Club continued to provide our high school students with exciting canoeing and kayaking opportunities, including a guided trip down the Whitewater River near Brookville, Indiana hosted by Morgan’s Canoe & Outdoor Adventures.

Through such experiential learning, students strengthened their present moment awareness and mindfulness, as well as their problem-solving and social skills

When Patrick Russell was offered the opportunity to organize Citi’s annual Field Day event at SJO, he jumped at the chance. The Citi Vice President grew up in an adverse environment similar to that faced by many children at SJO. The mentoring he received through a local youth-serving agency changed the course of his life, so he was eager to help kids struggling with some of the same challenges he faced.

Picking Up STEAM The high school added an innovative new elective to its slate of classes. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Program enabled young people to tackle creative projects, including building robots, putting together radio circuitry, drawing with 3D pens, and making rock candy geodes.

Patrick said, “When you volunteer, you start to realize that you really do have the chance to change kids’ lives.”

BUILDING HOPE, STRENGTHENING LIVES

Melting Challenges, Sprouting Hope

“He’s definitely a changed child!” his teacher said.

Adam When Adam first joined St. Joseph Orphanage’s multiple disabilities class, he struggled with reading and math. Remembering letters and their sounds was particularly difficult for Adam, and he would often grow frustrated.

At such times, he had trouble controlling his temper and would often rip up the paper in front of him and storm off.

However, Adam’s teacher at St. Joseph Orphanage continued to work patiently with him. She offered him the opportunity to use hands-on learning materials such as sandpaper letters and counting beads that promote attention and memory. St. Joseph Orphanage staff also helped Adam learn to better manage his emotions so he could stay focused on classroom 13

tasks. Now, thanks to the education and services he has received at St. Joseph Orphanage, Adam has made great strides in addressing these challenges. When he gets frustrated, he now asks for help rather than letting his anger get the better of him. He also excels at helping out in the classroom, taking particular satisfaction in assisting with the lunch cart, and he loves putting puzzles together. Adam’s academic skills have improved as well—he recognizes coins and numbers, has become a stronger reader, and can write full sentences.

E

ighteen-year-old Maya has emerged from a childhood filled with adversity into the sunlight of hope and determination. At an SJO board meeting, she described her challenging journey in words and song, leaving board members awed by her talent and courage.

As she was growing up, Maya endured hunger, homelessness, and abuse. By the time she was in the 7th grade, she was making risky decisions, self-medicating, and using self-harming behaviors to cope with her emotional pain.

Then, Maya began receiving services from SJO, but her difficulties persisted until a turning point was reached two years ago.

That was when her SJO therapist, Lea, introduced her to dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). “I did a 180. I’m completely different from how I was before,” Maya said.

her hometown high school where she is now completing her senior year. She won her classmates’ respect and admiration there when she read aloud a powerful poem she had written about the experiences that have made her who she is today.

Maya’s ultimate goal is to become a psychologist so she can make a positive difference in other young people’s lives just as Lea has made a positive difference in her life. “I owe a lot of this to her,” Maya said. “I want to help people, too.”

I am from a broken start, to a new beginning, and resilience you just can’t get anywhere else.

Through DBT, Maya has learned to practice mindfulness and to let go of self-hatred. Buoyed by her newfound emotional resilience, Maya persuaded school administrators to let her return to

Kameron and Kamya

Twins Kameron and Kamya suffered through a very hard and scary start in life. Their home environment was marred by abuse, and the twins learned not to trust people. By the tender age of four, they found it hard to believe that anyone would take care of them and keep them safe. That was when their adoptive mother, Jada, entered their lives.

Initially, Jada became a loving foster parent to the four-yearolds through SJO’s foster care program. She welcomed them into her home and helped them learn basic skills such as how to dress themselves. For the first time, Kamya and Kameron were living in a stable environment that included reassuring routine and plenty of unconditional love.

The Rewards of Foster Parenting

There have been many challenges over the years as the twins learned how to function in social settings and not to use aggression to get what they wanted. However, with Jada’s support and guidance, greatly assisted by therapists and case managers from SJO, the twins have made great strides. Jada stated, “SJO has always been there to support our journey.” Now 14 years old, Kameron and Kamya are progressing well in school. Kamya is interested in becoming a computer programmer and enjoys dancing and caring for children, while Kameron loves to make people laugh, has fun playing video games, and wants to be an actor, technical engineer, or welder. Jada couldn’t be more proud of them. “I thank God every day for bringing Kameron and Kamya into my life,” she said.

To be successful as a foster parent, you must provide structure, routine, and love, Jada noted. She recommended that those interested in foster parenting go ahead and become licensed and then try providing respite foster care first to see if foster parenting is right for them.

Since becoming a licensed foster parent 20 years ago, Jada has fostered many children through SJO, including sibling groups, and she has served as an inspiring role model for single parents. Foster parenting has enabled her to build lasting relationships with many young people, including Kamya and Kameron, whom she adopted in 2014.

“It’s rewarding, especially when you have a challenging child and you see the difference you make in that child’s life,” Jada said.
