For more than 185 years, St. Joseph Orphanage has provided hope and healing for children and families throughout southwest Ohio. We care for more than 1,500 children a day who suffer with mental health and behavioral concerns, often because of abuse, neglect, or trauma.

What an incredible year we have had here at St. Joseph Orphanage! This year has flown by as we celebrated our 185th year of Building Hope and Strengthening Lives in Cincinnati and southwest Ohio. This was a year filled with change, learning and preparing for the future and as always, a year filled with serving some of the most vulnerable children, youth and families in Ohio.

When these children and families come to St. Joseph Orphanage for help, they find more than a list of programs; they find hope for healing, recovery and future success! We want to thank you for your support and partnership as we meet the needs of these children, youth and families on a daily basis.

• Implemented innovative engagement techniques: Open Access and Just in Time Scheduling, as well as our new electronic health record, which all helps us better meet the needs of those we serve.

I would like to share a few highlights with you:

These are just a few of the exciting developments over the past year at St. Joseph Orphanage. While we know the next couple of years will be a time of change as Ohio transforms its Behavioral Healthcare system, St. Joseph Orphanage will continue to make a difference in the lives of the children, youth and families we serve daily.

• I ncreased the number of children and families served by over 20%, the most children served in St Joseph Orphanage’s history.

•A record number of first time graduates in families, both 8th grade and high school.

•M any of our foster children found their forever homes.

When these children and families come to St. Joseph Orphanage for help, they find more than a list of programs; they find hope for healing, recovery and future success.

our Programs St. Joseph Orphanage offers a wide range of mental health, behavioral health and educational services to children, families, and young adults throughout Southwest Ohio. We are committed to providing the individualized support and guidance necessary for positive life changes and future success.

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION — GROUP THERAPY

ASSESSMENT

RESIDENTIAL CRISIS STABILIZATION

Assists in identifying suspected behavioral health and educational concerns, along with providing on-going treatment recommendations.

Providing a highly structured and secured living environment to assist youth with severe emotional or behavioral concerns.

PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT

THERAPEUTIC FOSTER CARE

Psychiatric assessment and medication management for youth in need of continued psychiatric support.

Providing therapeutic foster homes for children birth to 21, with a special focus on youth with behavioral health concerns.

COUNSELING SERVICES

INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICES

Individual, group and family therapy for youth with home, school, and office based settings.

Community based apartments for youth transitioning to adulthood, including those aging out of foster care. On-site resident manager, life coach and case manager.

COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC SUPPORT TREATMENT Community based case management working directly with youth and their families wherever a behavioral concern occurs.

TRANSITION TO INDEPENDENCE Intensive outpatient services focusing on a successful transition into adulthood.

SPECIALIZED EDUCATION Therapeutic learning environment for students K-12. Individualized instruction and structured classrooms.

Daily group therapy offers a therapeutic peer environment to support positive social and emotional development and relationships.

After school option also available.

“When you open your door to a foster child, you get more than you give.”

Kimberly, her husband, and their three children have been opening their door to foster children for more than six years and feel as though the opportunity has been a gift to their family.

“My children have learned compassion for others and different situations,” said Kimberly, who also works at St. Joseph Orphanage. “There are of course tough times in the beginning of transitioning a child into your home, but it’s always worth it.”

Kimberly and her family invited Trinity, a smart and compassionate 15-year-old, into their home. She was such a wonderful fit with the family;

they decided to officially adopt her! While it was an exciting time it was also hard for Trinity, because she is one of eight children.

“They just fit right into our family,” said Kimberly. “They’ve become best friends with my kids and they all support each other and hang out together, at home and at school.”

Soon after adopting Trinity, Kimberly began to foster two of her biological brothers, Nathan and Jonathan. Nathan is a 13-year-old who is both a scholar and an athlete.

He plays basketball and gets straight A’s in school. Jonathan is 10 years old and fairly mellow. He enjoys hanging with his friends, swimming, playing basketball and telling jokes. He always keeps the family laughing!

A few months ago, Kimberly and her family decided to officially adopt Nathan and Jonathan too! Again, it’s a

complicated time as they close the chapter on their former lives and begin a new one, but they still get to see their other biological brothers and sisters once a month for slumber parties and fun outings.

Kimberly and her family are still providing foster care to children in need.

She enjoys working with St. Joseph Orphanage Family Ties Foster Care because of the 24-hour support they provide if she ever has a question or just needs to talk. They also provide a daily financial stipend, on-going paid training with childcare, and cover things like Christmas gifts!

“The main thing I’ve learned is that foster children are just like my children,” said Kimberly. “They have the same worries as my kids, the same dreams and interests.

Some will act out but it’s important to remember their behaviors are not who they are, it’s their way of coping.

At the end of the day they’re just kids who need love.”

St. Joseph Orphanage

Sophia overcomes her anxiety At only eleven years old Sophia suffered from extreme anxiety.

Her anxiety prevented her from attending school and she was falling behind on her education.

Sophia was referred to St. Joseph Orphanage’s education program by her public school, but she still struggled with regular attendance. Determined to help Sophia, the staff of St. Joseph Orphanage decided to take a very gradual approach to addressing Sophia’s anxiety.

Instead of asking Sophia to come to St. Joseph Orphanage or meet with both a therapist and a case manager, a community-based case manager began visiting Sophia at home during the summer. The case manager moved slowly with Sophia and spent a significant amount of time building a rapport.

She was able to develop a relationship with the family and helped Sophia’s mother recognize ways that she was accidentally supporting Sophia’s anxiety. The case manager worked all summer to prepare Sophia for the upcoming school year.

Each day got easier and Sophia now reports school as one of her favorite places.

She has opened up so much that she has identified some therapy issues with the case manager. Although she was nervous, she trusted her case manager enough to accept a recommendation of a therapist she is now working with, so she can continue to learn new coping skills for her anxiety.

On the first day of school Sophia only made it through a half-day due to her anxiety.

However, on the second day Sophia got herself up in the morning and walked to school on her own! Each day got easier and Sophia now reports school as one of her favorite

How Amiya overcame abuse Amiya was sexually abused by her 14-year-old cousin for three years, beginning when she was just six years old.

When Amiya came to St. Joseph Orphanage she was struggling to process the trauma she had endured. Instead of worrying about homework each night like a typical child, she had reoccurring nightmares. Instead of enjoying her friends during the day, she experienced auditory hallucinations that were very scary to her. She isolated herself from others and struggled to trust anyone.

She had low self-esteem and became emotionally numb.

She seemed lifeless; often just staring at people with a blank smile.

Amiya’s St. Joseph Orphanage Therapist, Jessica, began individual and family therapy with Amiya and her parents.

By utilizing St. Joseph Orphanage’s play therapy room, Jessica helped Amiya learn to express her emotions and cope with her trauma through play in a safe, calm environment.

Today, Amiya no longer suffers from hallucinations or nightmares. She is beginning to “feel” again and can express those feelings to her therapist

and family. Instead of lifeless stares, she greets people with a cheerful smile. She’s learning how to be a kid again and no longer isolates herself from others. She enjoys participating in after-school activities and even joined the Girl Scouts!

Amiya is still on her journey to recovery and success, but everyday her family and friends can see a bit more of the sweet, happy, beautiful child she really is!

Group Volunteer Opportunities Projects such as landscaping, program supply drives and cleaning to create an excellent environment for the children of SJO are great opportunities to bond with fellow co-workers, church members or others, while contributing to a worthy cause. Groups, companies, and clubs are invited to host a party for the children. There are also opportunities available off-site such as organizing a donation drive on behalf of St. Joseph Orphanage or making handmade cards for the SJO Card Pal Program. Spring for the Stars Gala Every spring, the Spring for the Stars Gala is a fun event that features live and silent auctions, dinner, drinks, a live band and an opportunity to view and purchase art made by the children of St. Joseph Orphanage. TRAUMA INFORMED CARE INITIATIVE

We’re excited to implement our new Open Access walk-in hours at our Villa and Butler County Campuses for new outpatient mental health clients.

Now children and families in need of assistance will have access to the services they need quickly, with no appointment necessary!

We’ve begun to implement our new Trauma Informed Care Initiative to better serve children who have experienced trauma. Many of our staff have been trained in trauma informed care and we’re working toward training every SJO staff member. We’ve also updated the campuses to be more trauma-informed by moving offices to make staff more accessible, painting with colors that are fun and inviting, and turning our seclusion rooms into new sensory rooms — offering a safe place for a child to de-escalate when needed.

NORTH COLLEGE HILL PARTNERSHIP St. Joseph Orphanage (SJO) is developing and growing services that meet the needs of the North College Hill School District. Our team has specialized classrooms at North College Hill (NCH) for grades K-4 and grades 5-8. In addition, daily therapy and case management services are available for students at all grade levels.

Offering St. Joseph Orphanage classrooms and resources directly in North College Hill Schools makes transitions easier for students. Children who are struggling now receive services without having to leave their school. Also, when it is time for a child to transition back into their standard classrooms, the transitions can be done gradually, starting with just a few hours a day.

Outside of serving students already in SJO/NCH programming, the team serves as a resource for the entire staff and student body. Whether running additional ‘special topics’ groups open to all students, assisting a student they see struggling in the hall, or helping a NCH teacher create a plan to address classroom behavior concerns.... the SJO team is there and ready to help!

CRISIS STABILIZATION UNIT EXPANSION The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is a safe, therapeutic living environment to assist children who display moderate to severe emotional or mental health concerns or who have become a risk to their own safety or the safety of others.

The CSU has now expanded to have 18 beds and we’ve been working diligently to improve our services and the quality of care that children experience. Some improvements include: • Community Learning by taking CSU youth on regular outings in order for them to practice the skills they are learning at St. Joseph Orphanage in a community setting.

• Individualized Services to help youth define their crisis and reduce their specific symptoms to transition back into the community • Focus on Safe and Therapeutic Interventions by developing new routines and revising the programming with the goal of providing structure and consistency for youth.
