WHO WE ARE

About St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation

St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) charitable organization, whose role is to secure, receive and administer philanthropic resources on behalf of and to benefit the five St. Joseph’s Hospitals throughout the greater Tampa Bay area: St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital-North and St. Joseph’s Hospital-South.

The Foundation seeks to inspire the community to engage in charitable investment to preserve St. Joseph’s Hospitals’ tradition of caring, fuel innovation and clinical excellence, and enhance facilities, programs and services to better serve our patients’ medical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Community support for St. Joseph’s Hospitals reflects the trust and reliance generations of patients have had with us, preserving our rich tradition of compassionate care and medical excellence.

History

THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF ALLEGANY

Father Pamfilo, one of the friars of St. Bonaventure College, established the Franciscan Sisters as a teaching community in 1859, and the Sisters opened St. Elizabeth Academy the following year to educate young women in the area. It was Sister Mary Teresa O’Neil, the first Superior General of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, who guided its growth as new schools were opened in Connecticut, New York, and other eastern states. The original education mission expanded in 1883 to include hospital administration and health care, homes for the young and elderly, pastoral and social work, and many other ministries. All of these were firmly rooted in the Franciscan philosophy of respect, hospitality, and compassion to all, regardless of faith.

The Franciscan Sisters’ healing ministry was brought to Tampa in 1934 with the founding of St. Joseph’s Hospital near downtown Tampa. The country was struggling in the depths of the Great Depression, and operating these medical institutions was economically challenging – but from the Sisters’ point of view, there was no time of greater need.

Opening the First St. Joseph’s Hospital

The original 40-bed hospital established near downtown Tampa 90 years ago by the Sisters has grown today to 527 beds, and four additional hospitals across our community. Some of the most complex medical conditions are treated at the hospital today, and through the years, its dedicated centers of excellence have become renown for providing

world-class care. Countless lives have been touched and healed by the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospitals, who continue to carry on the Franciscan tradition of offering hope and compassion, and ensuring each person’s medical, spiritual and emotional needs are met, regardless of faith.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of dedicated community leaders. The Board sets policies related to grant-making, geographic focus, spending, investment, management, governance and professional standards, internal and independent audits, and compensation and performance reviews.

The Foundation strives to be a model in donor and gift stewardship, privacy and financial management. We conduct an annual independent audit of our financial position, subscribe to the Donor Bill of Rights, and adhere to HIPAA privacy standards and regulations.

OUR THANKS TO YOU

It is with immense gratitude that we share the highlights of a transformative year for St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation in our 2024 Annual Report. As we reflect on the past year, we are continually inspired by the unwavering dedication of our medical teams, the tireless efforts of our volunteer leaders, and the incredible generosity of our community. Your collective commitment has empowered us to achieve remarkable milestones and deepen our impact within the community.

This year we celebrate a truly special achievement in our fundraising efforts. Thanks to your profound belief in our mission and a remarkable gift from the Pagidipati family, we witnessed an astonishing increase in year-over-year fundraising. The surge in support is a testament to the growing understanding of the vital work we do for patients and the tangible difference your gifts make.

In the following pages, you’ll read the many ways we partnered with donors and the community to create lifesaving change in our hospitals. What moves me the most is how inspired our donors are by our clinical teams, wanting to pour back into their work.

And in return, the clinical team feels supported and encouraged, and returns to healthcare’s front lines rejuvenated by how much the community recognizes their works and cares for them.

Looking ahead, we are more energized than ever to build upon this momentum. We plan to invest in many philanthropic initiatives including more support services for patients, growth of our graduate medical education programs, advanced technology for neurosciences, and the future of children’s health care. Together, we are ensuring that St. Joseph’s Hospitals remain strong for generations to come.

None of this would be possible without you. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, Foundation team and hospital leadership, we extend our deepest appreciation for your support.

With gratitude,

PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS CARE TO OUR COMMUNITY

National Recognition for BayCare Pediatric Care

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is the largest provider of pediatric care in West Central Florida, caring for thousands of families each year. The nationally recognized hospital is home to the 24-hour Steinbrenner Emergency Trauma Center for Children, Bayless Cancer Institute, and the Patel Children’s Heart Institute, the largest congenital heart disease program in West Central Florida. St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview also specializes in pediatrics.

HERE ARE A FEW OF ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITALS’ ACHIEVEMENTS IN PEDIATRIC CARE DURING 2024:

Hope for a Rare Form of Cancer

For more than two decades, pediatric oncologisthematologist Dr. Don Eslin participated in clinical trials of treatments for neuroblastoma, an oftenfatal cancer that afflicts mostly infants and children, including a trial of a drug known as DFMO. He and other researchers and physicians celebrated in late December 2023 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved DFMO for treatment of neuroblastoma, making this life-changing treatment more accessible for the children who need it.

Miniature

Pacemaker for a Teen

In a first among local hospitals, Dr. Kelvin Lau of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Patel Children’s Heart Institute implanted a leadless pacemaker about the size of a large vitamin capsule directly into a pediatric patient’s heart without opening the chest. This procedure, conducted through a vein in the leg, provided relief for a teen born with a congenital heart block who had recently experienced multiple episodes of dizziness and fainting related to the condition. “As a regional leader in cardiovascular care, we’re committed to continuously broadening our treatment options for our congenital heart patients,” said Dr. Lau. “We’re

excited to be able to offer this advanced technology to our pediatric patients.”

Standing Tall After Spinal Surgery

Dr. David Siambanes, a BayCare Medical Group pediatric orthopedic surgeon, specializes in spinal procedures at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. One of his patients, 17-year-old Madison Lockert, was born with hypotonic cerebral palsy and developed severe scoliosis as a teen, which curved her spine to a painful 98-degree angle that limited her ability to walk.

Following an eight-hour spinal fusion surgery by Dr.

Siambanes and his team, Madison gained the ability to stand tall. “She’s so much happier,” said her mother, Grace Lockert. “Her quality of life is so much better, and she can now even walk longer distances. It’s just incredible what Dr. Siambanes and his team were able to achieve.”

BayCare Cares for Children – And Their Families

Today, 5-year-old Brooks Miller is thriving. He attends school, plays sports and enjoys time with his siblings. But at 8 days old, he underwent his first open heart surgery at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital after he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. Brooks would need three more openheart surgeries over the next four years. “Brooks is doing better than I ever expected, to the point where, honestly, I don’t think about his heart condition every day anymore,” said his father, Ray Miller. “When you go through something like this, you know you obviously need the best medical care. You also need the best human care to take care of you.” Ray describes the care Brooks received as “the BayCare effect” — comprehensive care that supports not just the patient but the entire family.

Advancing Heart Care

St. Joseph’s Hospitals continued to be nationally recognized for our quality of heart care in 2024.

Triumph Over Cardiac Emergency

Brittany Williams had been managing her diagnosis of long QT syndrome, which can cause chaotic heart arrythmias, for nearly a decade when she experienced two potentially deadly arrythmias at once. She urgently required open-heart surgery, which was performed by Dr. Andrew Sherman at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Sherman repaired Brittany’s leaking mitral valve and performed an ablation procedure to restore a stable heartbeat. “For the first time in 33 years, I had a normal heart rate,” Brittany said. “When I listened to how strong my heartbeat was, all the fear left because it sounded amazing. It was just emotional because it was all because of the care I received and caring people.”

New Procedures for AFib

Physicians at St. Joseph’s Hospital were the first locally to offer patients an innovative procedure for treating atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia, by using pulsed field energy

to destroy heart tissue causing the AFib. In a separate development, two physicians at St. Joseph’s Hospital leveraged new industry technology and their expertise to develop a new procedure to treat AFib that they’re now teaching to other physicians around the country.

CELEBRATING THE IMPACT OF YOUR GENEROSITY

Philanthropic support plays a vital role in helping St. Joseph’s Hospitals fulfill their mission of delivering high-quality, compassionate health care to all. Through generous contributions from our community, St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation raises essential funds and awareness that directly support patient care, innovative programs and lifesaving technology.

Pagidipati Family’s $50 Million Donation Advances Health Care for Children

In April, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation was excited to announce a historic $50 million gift that will support the new, specially designed pediatric facility for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. The new hospital is part of a strategic effort to increase the region’s access to high-quality, state-of-the-art health care for children.

Tampa business leader and philanthropist Sidd Pagidipati, along with his brother Rahul and sister Srujani, made the transformative $50 million donation to honor their parents’ legacy as health care providers, their 50th wedding anniversary and their 50th anniversary of coming to the United States. Dr. Devaiah Pagidipati is a Harvard trained pediatric anesthesiologist and Dr. Rudrama Pagidipati is a pathologist. Joined in honoring their parents were Sidd’s wife, Dr. Ami Pagidipati, their two children, both born at BayCare hospitals, and Rahul’s wife, Dr. Neha Pagidipati, and their two children.

The gift, one of the largest donations in Tampa Bay history and celebrated as one of 2024’s largest gifts in America, will support the construction of a new facility for what will be called Pagidipati Children’s Hospital at St. Joseph’s when it opens in 2030.

“When you see what happens at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital every single day, you cannot help but be moved to contribute to the future of our region’s children,” said Sidd.

Scott and Kathy Fink Donate $5 Million to Support New Day Hospital

In November, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation was grateful to announce that Scott and Kathy Fink, a prominent Tampa family with ties across Tampa Bay, have given $5 million to advance children’s health care in West Central Florida.

“As philanthropists, my wife and I believe there’s simply no greater impact we can make than to invest in a child’s life,” said Scott. “It is an investment in family, community and an entire region.”

As a local business leader, Scott first became involved with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital through his leadership of Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a national charitable organization committed to funding research to eradicate pediatric cancer. Also, as proud parents of five children, Scott and Kathy have a deeply personal connection to the hospital. That connection grew soon after their youngest son, David, became a regular patient at 8 years old, due to his diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition treated with ongoing medical infusions.

Their gift will help support the construction of the hospital’s new facility to open in 2030 as Pagidipati Children’s Hospital at St. Joseph’s. The new facility’s Day Hospital will be named after the Fink family in recognition of their generosity.

Dutkowsky Family Donates $1 Million in Celebration of St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital’s 50th Birthday

In December, the Dutkowsky family of Tampa generously donated $1 million to support the construction of a new, fully renovated lobby at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, in celebration of the hospital’s 50th birthday.

The Dutkowsky Family Lobby was unveiled with a ribbon cutting and birthday celebration led by St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital President Sarah Naumowich. The revitalized five-story atrium lobby will serve as a warm welcome and comforting hub for countless women and families throughout Tampa Bay.

Lorraine and Bob Dutkowsky have been longtime supporters and friends of St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation. Once the CEO of Tech Data, Bob passed away in May of this year, and his life was marked by an array of personal and professional achievements that touched many lives throughout the community.

The Dutkowsky family gift has been made on behalf of Bob and Lorraine, who were married for more than 45 years; their children, Jennifer and Kevin; daughter-in-law, Julie; and grandchildren, Davis and Emma.

“As a nurse, and as part of a family that has been touched by the Women’s Hospital, I know what a meaningful difference this new lobby will make to all those who walk through its doors,” said Lorraine. “The lobby is truly the intersection of family, and our family is proud to be a part of that legacy.”

Chatterton Family Supports Pediatric MRI Cinema System

We are deeply grateful to the Chatterton family for their generous donation, which has brought a state-of-the-art Pediatric MRI Cinema System to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. This incredible system offers young patients an immersive entertainment experience during MRI procedures, helping reduce anxiety, discomfort, and the need for sedation. Thanks to Cammie and Jim Chatterton, our pediatric patients can now undergo these lengthy and often stressful scans in a much more relaxed and enjoyable environment.

“We are so proud to be a small part of giving children who need MRIs a better experience that can make it fun for them,” Cammie said.

Ronald McDonald House Announces New Home for Families

In August, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay announced plans to renovate 10,000 square feet above the neonatal floor inside St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital as a new house. The renovated space is less than 100 steps from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) doors and within walking distance of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) and pediatric cardiac ICU. It will feature enhanced amenities including a full kitchen, dining area, study, laundry center, playroom, fitness and wellbeing center, and 11 bedrooms with private baths.

St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation is proud to support

the new Ronald McDonald House with a $750,000 contribution to the project.

“We are honored to work alongside Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay as it expands its resources and support for the countless families that depend on St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for hope and healing,” said Kate Sawa, president of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Proton Therapy Center Breaks Ground at BayCare’s Perry Cancer Institute at St.

Joseph’s Hospital

In September, BayCare’s Perry Cancer Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital broke ground on the region’s first proton therapy center. This cutting-edge facility,

expected to open in 2025, will revolutionize cancer treatment by providing a highly precise form of radiation therapy that targets tumors with remarkable accuracy, minimizing radiation to healthy tissues and reducing side effects. Proton therapy is known for its ability to improve patient outcomes and lower the risk of secondary malignancies. The new center, located within St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center, represents a $33 million investment in advanced cancer care. Thanks to innovative technology from Mevion Medical Systems, this compact proton therapy system will offer unparalleled precision and comfort for patients. We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking initiative that will enhance cancer treatment services across BayCare’s network.

Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s Support Imaging Aids for Surgery and Diagnosis

Last year, the Philanthropic Women of St. Joseph’s provided funding for Spy-Phi at St. Joseph’s HospitalNorth and two ultrasounds at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Spy-Phi is a fluorescence imaging system used for surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North. Stryker Spy-Phi is used in multiple specialties for various applications, such as general surgery for bowel integrity and vascularization, breast surgery to detect lymph nodes for mapping, plastic surgery for perfusion detection, and surgical oncology for tumor detection. Spy-Phi for oncology involves the administration of a fluorescent dye that selectively accumulates in tumor tissues. The system then emits near-infrared light to excite the dye, causing it to emit fluorescence, which can be visualized with a specialized camera. In addition, two diagnostic ultrasounds will be replaced for the radiology department at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Inpatient Radiology is an extremely busy department, and the donation will allow the department to replace two of the machines with newer equipment that is more precise and has new features not available on the current machines.

KAM Roofing Services Matches $15,000

During Christmas in July

This year, KAM Roofing Services generously served as our Merry Matching Sponsor throughout our Christmas in July celebration, providing a dollar-fordollar match up to $15,000. It was the first year owner Kyle Mishler partnered with us during Christmas in July, and thanks to him and KAM Roofing Services, we were able to raise an incredible $30,000 for the patients of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

“Being a part of this organization has been rewarding in the fact that we are helping others in their time of need,” says Kyle. “To give back to families in desperate need, or those who just don’t know where to turn, means so much.”

Heroes Ball Funds Purchase Portable MRI Machine

Thanks to the support of our incredible community during the 2024 Heroes Ball, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital added a new, groundbreaking portable MRI machine to our pediatric intensive care unit last year –the first for the hospital.

The Swoop Portable MR Imaging System, created by HyperFine, is the world’s first FDA-cleared portable point of care MRI for brain imaging. The system produces images at the point of care, without the need to transport patients to a new location for scanning.

Benefits include improving critical care neuroimaging workflow, enabling rapid diagnoses and treatment of patients, and most importantly – not requiring our young critical care patients to have to leave the comfort of their room or family member’s side.

A nurse, mom, dad, or sibling will be able to hold the child’s hand, touch their face, or even hold a soother, helping to keep the patient calm and relaxed throughout the imaging process. Often, patients are relaxed enough to sleep through the scan.

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is the first hospital on the west coast of Florida to receive the innovative, patient-centered system, and only the fourth location in the entire state.

HUMANITY AT WORK

Team Member Giving

Our St. Joseph’s Hospitals team members make a difference in the lives of their patients, coworkers and community every single day. Through the Team Member Giving campaign, our team members are making a meaningful impact in each other’s lives by providing patient care programs and services, education, technology, and equipment that all team members benefit from. Team Members give to the campaign through online donations, continuous payroll deductions, one-time gift payroll deductions, or donating Paid Time Off (PTO).

In 2024, nearly $352,000 was raised by team members to help fund Humanity Grants, educational scholarships and team member emergencies, and more than $411,000 was granted back to team members through these programs.

HUMANITY GRANTS

“How can we ease the stay of patients across St. Joseph’s Hospitals?”

Our team is constantly asking this question in an effort to improve the experience of our patients and families across St. Joseph’s Hospitals. Through the Humanity Grants Program, St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation invests in projects and ideas generated by team members that will bring care and comfort to patients and their families. The Humanity Grants Program is funded by donations made to St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation through the Team Member Giving campaign and philanthropic gifts made by patients and community members.

From funding the purchase of a specialized infant scale for pediatric feeding therapy, to helping support the Music at the Bedside program led by St. Joseph’s Hospitals’ Spiritual Care Department, to helping fund family well-being bags in the Steinbrenner Children’s Emergency & Trauma Center to help families feel a little more comfortable, Humanity Grants bring to life the ideas team members feel would enhance the compassionate care provided to our patients.

WANT TO JOIN OUR MISSION?

Ways To Give

There are many ways for our community to support St. Joseph’s Hospitals – including making a donation, participating in an event, starting a fundraiser, volunteering time, and much more. The support of our generous community helps sustain the extraordinary, high level of personal care our not-for-profit health system is known for, and is highly valued by our outstanding team of health care professionals and the patients they serve.

One-time Donations or Monthly Gifts

Community members can make a one-time gift via credit card, check or cash, or they can set up automatic monthly contributions in support of St. Joseph’s Hospitals.

Tribute Gifts

A tribute gift is a meaningful way to preserve the memory of a loved one, celebrate a special occasion, or thank an outstanding caregiver.

Honor the Memory of a loved one:

The loss of a loved one, friend, or colleague often inspires us to ensure their memory lives on. Many people find supporting St. Joseph’s Hospitals is an ideal way to honor someone who has passed away. Gifts made in memory offer a lasting tribute to a loved one while providing family and friends satisfaction of knowing they have helped others.

Celebrate a Special Moment or Individual:

Whether you are celebrating the birth of a baby, a special anniversary, or commemorating a complete recovery of a patient, making a gift to St. Joseph’s Hospitals is a gratifying way to give back.

• Dedicate a Gift to a Caregiver:

Sometimes words are simply not enough to thank someone who has helped you during your treatment at St. Joseph’s Hospitals or during a difficult time. Making a gift in honor of and saying thank you to your caregiver recognizes the outstanding service that physicians, nurses, and other team members or volunteers provide.

Planned Gifts

Planned gifts offer creative ways to support St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation. An individual, their loved one, and the St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation could all benefit at the same time by giving a planned gift. Such giving techniques are called “planned gifts,” because with thoughtful planning, win-win solutions are created for families and St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation.

Making a gift now to support St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation does not affect an individual’s day-to-day cashflow during their lifetime, meaning it won’t impact the way they live – either by designating to receive estate assets in the future or by making immediate gifts to us of assets that are “out of sight and out of mind.”

Sister Marie Celeste Society

Named in admiration, gratitude and honor of the vision and determination of St. Joseph’s past chief executive, and in tribute to our founders, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, the Sister Marie Celeste Society is a fellowship of benefactors who have included the hospital in their estate plans. These donors have named St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation as the beneficiary of a planned gift. Such gifts might include a bequest, appreciated securities, gifts of retirement accounts, gifts of life insurance and/or charitable income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts.

In addition to making a lasting contribution to our long-term success, benefits of membership in the Sister Marie Celeste Society also includes invitations to special events, opportunities to learn more about the hospitals and a subscription to our newsletter.

Donate Cryptocurrency

Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. This makes Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax efficient ways to support your favorite cause.

Peer-to-Peer Fundraisers

Whether someone wants to dedicate a milestone birthday or anniversary, train with a purpose for a race, or pay tribute to a loved one, we’re grateful for the support of our community.

By starting a fundraiser, an individual can use their creativity and passion to raise funds that can be

directed to a specific area of need or to wherever the need is greatest. The Foundation can provide an easyto-use personal fundraising page so they can share their story, collect and track donations, and build their own fundraising team.
