September is Senior Center Month!
Let’s flip the script with the National Council on Aging and challenge outdated stereotypes about aging and recognize the amazing contributions of older people and how the senior center serves them! We have a packed month with an Art Show displaying our community’s artistic talent as well as a couple banquets and our Health & Wellness Fair during Fall Awareness Week. Aging offers opportunities that are not available any other time of life and we are here to help you take full advantage of those opportunities! We’ll see you soon!

“Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been” ~David Bowie

MONTHLY VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: LYNNE HARMAN
A Utah native, I grew up the youngest of three girls in a neighborhood where everyone knew their neighbors, free to explore, ride bikes, roller skate, climb trees, and catch a snack from the neighbor’s garden In the evenings we played night games and slept out under the stars. At an early age I knew I wanted to help others, and sometimes got into debates with a teacher regarding their discipline style of a problem kid in the class. I took pride in saving the occasional bird having the misfortune of flying into my mother’s sparkling clean windows. I would run for my doctor kit and holding it ever so gently, stroking its tiny feathers lightly, offer a bit of water from a dropper until it was ready to fly As far back as I remember, I’ve had a spot in my heart for animals. On my way home from school there were many times I found a kitten or a friendly dog following me, mom always made me take it back As a young teenage girl I began volunteering at Holy Cross Hospital in SLC as a candy striper in the summers. Dad dropped me off on his way to work and picked me up from my Papa’s house (he lived just a few blocks away) in the evening I loved my grandparents and miss them dearly!
Growing up in the 70’s I decided to quit school at the age of 16, there were so many other options it’s amazing I survived my decisions! At 19 I went to work part-time for general surgeon, I assisted surgeries, endoscopy procedures and ran front office. I continued on to a full time position for a pulmonary & critical care doctor performing EKG & spirometry breathing tests and cranked out mountains of medical billing! I ended up managing a plastic surgeons office, before opening up my own business ‘Lynne’s Wig Boutique’ in 2010

Meanwhile, I married Mitch Harman, a local guy I’d gone to school with, he always had the best show & tells in school, still does actually! Mitch was an honest guy with a great sense of humor – two traits I felt made great husband material! We purchased a 1920’s brick bungalow and began our life together in Sugarhouse Years later, Mitch & I made the decision to move our family to Lehi where Jennifer could have her horse, Stuart had a treehouse and Lindsey had her trampoline. Lehi was a wonderful place to raise our kids allowing them to have hobbies, pets, and a bit of space to grow up.
Together 42 years, we settled in South Jordan in 2015, our 3 children now have families of their own, giving us 8 beautiful grandchildren who continue to inspire me with their bright minds and brave spirit! They all live within 10 minutes of us, and we enjoy every minute of family life! In our earlier years of marriage we enjoyed camping, road trips, visiting many National Parks, Disney vacations and winter escapes to Mexico Later, our travels have taken us to England, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Borneo, the Dominican Republic, and many other islands of the Caribbean. Mexico has continued to be our annual favorite winter escape, and it’s always a bonus when the family can join us! As empty nesters, I continue to run my shop, summers find me weaving in my daughters alpaca farm, practicing yoga with my granddaughter, or golfing (Mitch is teaching me) and relaxing at our summer place in Star Valley, Wyoming. Mitch enjoys golf, and I play pickle ball, which is how I came to co-volunteer at the Senior Center with my good friend & soul sister, Lory Schantz, who mentored me when I wanted to learn to play Pickle ball & volunteering with this fun group of active seniors has been one of the best things I have done, I truly love this city, I love my p-ball buddies & I love the game!!
Thanks for allowing me to share my story!
Lynne Harman
