2022 DIRECTOR'S LETTER To All South Jordan Residents:

I

am pleased to share the Public Works Department annual report, covering the fiscal year 2022-2023. The report shares work that has been accomplished, provides accountability for the resources used within the department and highlights the value delivered to South Jordan Residents and other City stakeholders from the Public Works Department’s engaged and committed staff.

This last winter provided an exceptional snow pack. What does this mean for the drought? It has helped the State of Utah move from extreme drought conditions to moderate conditions. But we are not 2

This past year provided challenging weather, from extreme winter storms to many microburst rain storms. I would like to thank the Public Works staff for working around the clock to make the roads safe for the community and minimizing flooding events through the maintenance of the storm water infrastructure. This fiscal year the Public Works Department was able to meet performance measure goals set for each maintenance division, from street sweeping of the City to maintaining the parks at a level of service where the community wants to recreate.

In this report you will find highlighted accomplishments from each division in the department. In addition to major system improvements, Public Works crews perform daily infrastructure maintenance and service delivery with the goal of meeting resident expectations. This is accomplished with the resources the City Council appropriates to the department, smart planning for infrastructure asset management and service delivery, and by dedicated employees who are professionals in their field.

The Public Works Department works to make life better for residents. I hope that each person who reviews this report will learn more and have a greater appreciation for what takes place behind the scenes to ensure our residents enjoy a high quality of life here in South Jordan.

What is Public Works?

FLEET

The Fleet Division is responsible for the maintenance, repairs, replacement and disposal of 402 pieces of equipment ranging from lawn mower to fire trucks. The division is also responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of an on-site bulk fuel station. The Fleet Division has received the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Award since July 2013 and an honorable mention from the 100 Best Fleets organization for the last 5 years.

OPERATIONS

The Public Works Operations Division is responsible for being the point of contact for residents. The division is responsible for preparing work orders for scheduled and emergency maintenance work, collecting and entering data, and maintaining division records and files.

STREET LIGHTING

The Street Light Division is responsible for providing dependable service and maintenance of the street lighting system within the city. This provides a number of important benefits such as improved public safety throughout the transportation network, beautification, longer periods of accessibility, and promotes security.

STREETS

The Streets Division is responsible for providing and maintaining a safe, well-kept transportation network throughout the city. Division infrastructure maintenance responsibilities include aspects of transportation such as: roads, bridges, sidewalks, curb and gutter, street signs, and roadway striping.

DRINKING WATER

The Water Division provides safe and high quality drinking water with pressure and flow rates that exceed state requirements.

This is accomplished through compliance of sampling, system upgrades, response to failures and resident concerns, and continually monitoring the system as a whole.

STORM WATER

The Storm Water Division is responsible for the maintenance, repairs and inspection of storm water assets within the city and works to ensure storm infrastructure is working properly during storm events.

This includes street sweeping, which prevents debris from entering the storm water system.

SANITATION & RECYCLING

SECONDARY WATER

The Sanitation & Recycling Division administer and manage all solid waste and recycling services. The division provides residences with 96-gallon containers for garbage and recycling services and is responsible for the delivery and repair of 40,000 containers.

The Secondary Water Division manages the delivery of irrigation water to approximately 3,500 South Jordan households by both gravity and pressurized distribution systems.

Every effort is made to maintain the South Jordan Cemetery with the respect deserved of the deceased. Our staff works with funeral directors and the public to ensure the burial portion of the death process is handled professionally and with compassion for each individuals needs.

The Parks Division is responsible for providing parks and recreational services for our residents and patrons. This includes keeping approximately 37 city parks clean and groomed, over 12 miles of trails in working order, and over 250 acres of natural open space functioning properly and open to wildlife.

I

’m going on seven years with the city. I started out as a parks maintenance worker taking care of the city’s open spaces, trails and trees. I’m now the Urban Forester for the city with the responsibility of managing our trees and open spaces. I truly love my job and enjoy the work we do. I’m committed to growing a sustainable urban forest, sharing the benefits of the right tree in the right place, and educating residents on all things trees.

y name is Connor Oswald, and I have been with South Jordan City for 7 years. I have moved through various

positions within the Water Department. I am currently the Water Conservation Coordinator for the City of South Jordan. I really enjoy coming to work each day, for a lot of different reasons. The main reason is because what we do in the Water Department is important. Providing safe drinking water is important, and specifically in my position, making sure we have enough water for the future. I also enjoy helping out the residents in any way I can.

Kelly Davies, Mechanic I worked for Sandy City for 7 years before coming to South Jordan.

And seen how things were done for Sandy City and their residents and wanted to come to work for South Jordan City because I have lived in the city for the last 35 years and wanted to make a difference for me and my family and friends who live in the city. I’ve seen the city grow over the years and think that I have helped in doing my part in helping it grow. I love working for the city so much that 4 years ago when we were bought out and had to move my only want was to stay here in the city which we did. I take pride in the things I do for the city am very grateful for my fellow coworkers and the friendships I have made over the years. I look forward to coming to work each day and what that day might bring. I am grateful for the city and taking a chance on me and hiring me 17 years ago. My time is nearing to an end in a few years when I retire but am very grateful the way the city is heading and grateful to be a part of it.
