A friendly reminder that The PLAYERS Tournament week is a busy one here at San Jose. On Friday, March 10, we will require carts until 3pm to accommodate as many players as possible and guest passes may not be used.

Even though it seems like we did not really have much of a winter this year, so far anyway Our winters generally consist of a few cold days and maybe a frost or two Like this past Christmas, we had six days with the low temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s but less than seven days later we were back to the 80 degree highs during the day Most of our winters issues stem from low light situations especially near the winter solstice when the sun is only 38 degrees above the horizon. Low light along with shade equals no light for some areas, i.e., #14 tee area.

This is our winter damage that will usually be noticeable until late spring and even into early summer. Below is a short but eye opening article from the USGA Green Section on winter damage. As we move closer to the equinox daylight hours get longer and the temperatures warmer, it’s great for golf but no one like to see it more than a North Florida Golf Course Superintendent
