THE SJA FOUNDATION

THE SJA FOUNDATION

The SJA Foundation was established in 1968 by the SJA Lay Advisory Board. Its purpose is to ensure the permanence and viability of the Academy and to guard the school’s assets for future generations. It is the vehicle where funds are collected, managed and distributed; all are invested under the supervision of the SJA Foundation Board.

In the master plan for St. Joseph’s Academy, the Board of Directors and the SJA Foundation Board firmly endorse the growth of the overall endowment as critical to the ongoing success of St. Joseph’s Academy as a premier educational institution.

Tuition and fees do not cover the school’s total operating costs, which makes it imperative that the SJA Foundation continue to grow. In addition to tuition and fees, support for the school comes from the Sisters of St. Joseph, endowed scholarships and funds, contributions to the Annual Giving Program, in-kind services and donations from the SJA Mothers’ Club and SJA Dads’ Club.

In keeping with the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph, no student has ever been denied admission solely on the basis of ability to pay. Contributions to the SJA Foundation keep this legacy alive.

Fully endowed scholarships and funds are perpetual because only earned interest income, not the principal, is used. Donors may continue to contribute even after a scholarship or fund is fully endowed because the larger the corpus, the greater the earnings available for use.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Since a student’s ability to pay full tuition is not a criterion to be considered for admission to St. Joseph’s Academy, assistance from endowed scholarships is at the heart of the Academy’s philosophy. Currently, scholarships are fully endowed and perpetual when they reach $40,000, an amount to be achieved over a maximum period of five years. They may be established to memorialize or honor individuals, groups or families as they enable SJA to continue to educate deserving young women regardless of their family’s financial status. Occasionally, plans for full endowment of the scholarship are made in the form of a bequest.

Since admission to SJA is never based on the student’s ability to pay full tuition, application for scholarship is made after acceptance is finalized. Virtually all scholarships provide partial funding for tuition.

ENDOWED FUNDS

Endowed funds are established to provide income to address curriculum and facility needs and are often created to memorialize individuals, groups or families. Funds are fully endowed at $50,000, and monies from these funds give additional financial strength for SJA’s tradition of educational excellence in specific areas of the curriculum. Like scholarships, endowed funds are perpetual, and only the earnings may be used.

SUMMARY

Since SJA’s founding in 1868, the Sisters of St. Joseph have partnered with generous benefactors to operate a top-quality Catholic school for young women. SJA relies on benefactors at every level to provide these endowed scholarships and funds. Tribute or memorial donations of any amount may be designated for any endowed scholarship or fund listed in this booklet.

Establishing scholarships and funds at SJA now is a wonderful way to provide quality Catholic education for future generations. The SJA Mission Advancement Office is ready to assist donors with the simple process involved.

THE SUZIE TOUPS ADLER ’85 SCHOLARSHIP*

Suzie, who is the facilities director at SJA, said her parents have long valued Catholic education, particularly at St. Joseph’s Academy, where young women enjoy countless opportunities for spiritual, academic and personal growth. “With one scholarship already in place, they have seen the benefits and the difference it can make in a young girl’s life,” Suzie said. “With this new scholarship, they are once again able to unselfishly help others and, in proud parent fashion, honor me, who is so undeserving of such incredible people as parents.” The Toups are the grandparents of SJA graduates Stephanie Toups ’12, Katie Adler ’13, Shelby Toups ’15 and Allie Adler ’16.

SISTER AGATHA SCHOLARSHIP*

Druci studied drama and English at Baylor University, received a bachelor of arts from Florida State University and a master’s degree from LSU. She was hired in 1965 by Sister Claire Germaine and had no plans to pursue a teaching career; rather, she intended to work at SJA while her husband, Sherrill, finished school. However, she flourished in the classroom and became a master teacher. She taught English, speech and theology; worked with drama, speech and debate and the yearbook; and coordinated senior activities and trips. Her teaching career was marked by creativity and a passion for excellence. She challenged her students to think critically and reach beyond all expectations.

In addition to the influence of family, Sharn and Trymica were shaped as young women by their years at St. Joseph’s Academy. When Trymica’s father passed away just months before she graduated from SJA, the family surrounded her in love and support. When Sharn and Trymica entered Louisiana State University just a year apart, Sharn watched her cousin’s character, faith and perseverance grow even more steadfast as she faced health battles of her own. “As young women, she stood by my side as my maid of honor and then later as godmother to our youngest son,” Sharn said. “Trymica embodied sanctity, joy and action as a daughter, sister, cousin, friend and wife. She inspired me then and inspires me today.”

With two losses in a short period of time, momentum built for a unique way to remember them. Suzie learned that special benches were being designed for the orchard, and the class raised funds to purchase a bench which has Stephanie and Vicki’s names on it. With the remaining funds, the class scholarship was established.

The scholarship honors Vicki and Stephanie as friends to everyone who touched each and every member of their class. Both loved the Academy and embodied its ideals of Sanctity, Joy and Action. St. Joseph’s Academy has had the privilege of educating six generations of Kleinpeter women starting in 1872. Sr. Adele, a 1954 graduate of SJA, ministered for 26 years as an elementary school teacher and principal and 14 years in administration in the Office of the Social Apostolate for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She became the first president of SJA in 2004 and sought to create a greater balance between the three pillars of the school’s mission statement: faith development, academic excellence and personal growth. She implemented strategic changes in the areas of the educational environment, curriculum and facilities. A primary goal throughout her eight years as president was to strengthen the scholarship program in the SJA Foundation.

Sr. Adele’s family has deep roots at SJA. Her mother, the late Aline Broussard Lambert, graduated in 1928. Other family members who are SJA alumnae are her three sisters, Patsy L. Brignac ’51, the late Jeanne L. Millet ’53 and Stephanie L. Vicari ’76; five aunts, four of whom were Sisters of St. Joseph; and a niece, Patricia Brignac Talbot ’84. Sr. Joan’s ministry at St. Joseph’s Academy began in 1964. She taught English and French until being named principal in 1968, a position she held for 11 years. She spent 1979 in New Orleans while the Sisters of St. Joseph closed SJA-New Orleans, then returned to Baton Rouge in 1980 to join SJA’s guidance department and establish a development program. She served as SJA’s first development director, overseeing a capital campaign in the mid-1980s that resulted in the construction of the Activity Center and renovation of the former gym into today’s Technology and Learning Center.

THE SUSAN WALKER LEVASSEUR ’62 SCHOLARSHIP

Alain Levasseur established the Susan Walker Levasseur ’62 Scholarship in loving memory of his wife, who passed away on July 8, 2021. Susan’s 12 years as an Academy student were central to the life story she inherited, in large part, from her parents, Dr. Myron and June Walker, and built for her own family over 52 years. There was little distinction between Susan’s family at the Academy – the Sisters of St. Joseph and some of her longtime friends, including Sister Lydia and Sister Kathleen – and her family of Walker siblings, nieces and cousins. Her Academy education developed in her a sharp intellect. She became an excellent teacher of French, sharing with her students her superb knowledge of the French language and her love and passion for France. Susan’s daughter, Stéphanie Levasseur Devaney ’91, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Dupont Levasseur ’95 and several nieces are Academy graduates.

THE CYNTHIA ANDRIES LITZ ’54 SCHOLARSHIP

There is no greater gift we, as a society, can bequeath to our children than the gift of faith. With that as their motivation, Cynthia Andries Litz and her son, Kenneth L. Litz Jr., established the Cynthia Andries Litz ’54 Scholarship. Their desire was that this scholarship would help continue the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph that young women would be able to receive a Catholic education regardless of their family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Their SJA education will allow them to flourish academically and, most importantly, provide them with the knowledge that their inner strength comes from Christ and that it will sustain them as they travel through their individual life’s journeys.

ISAURE L. MANDA SCHOLARSHIP*

The four daughters of Isaure L. Manda established an endowed scholarship in her memory to commemorate her dedication to Catholic education so evident in the lives of her children and grandchildren who attended SJA. Her

SJA is a place to have fun while learning new skills, creating communities and growing in your faith. My time at SJA was something I’ll never forget, and I hope to be able to send my girls there one day.”

Isaure L. Manda Linda (Kron ’60) and Jerry Marchand Marjorie Claire McAnelly

type of education that she had. She received a great education at St. Joseph’s Academy. She excelled because of her background at SJA.”

While at the Academy, Marjorie Claire received the SJA Award, one of the school’s highest honors. At LSU, she was the recipient of several scholarships and was active in many organizations, holding leadership positions in most. She also worked in the surgery department at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and planned to apply to medical school.

Marjorie Claire’s sister, Megan McAnelly, is a 2003 graduate of SJA.

He was an accomplished vocalist and member of the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans and the New Orleans Vocal Arts Chorale.

Barbe McMahon Servando Henry Mendez Catherine Tarbett Mendez

Although they had no children of their own, Catherine and Servando had a strong belief in quality Catholic education and its mission to develop the God-given potential of each student, particularly those in need of financial assistance. That belief inspired the establishment of this scholarship.

Establishing a scholarship in her name is a wonderful way for Grace’s family to pay tribute to the school that has played such an important role in her formation. In addition to the faith-filled environment and academic rigor provided by the Academy, Grace said she grew as a young woman because of her high school’s strong sense of community. She also learned how to be a leader, the meaning of teamwork and sisterhood and what it means to be loved and cared for. “My four years there were truly some of the best years of happiness, growth, success, love and friendship of my entire life,” she said. “The experiences SJA gave me were unlike any other.”

The 2015-2017 tournaments benefited SJA’s STEM curriculum, while the 2018 and 2019 events, both drawing 260 players, raised nearly $30,000 for the Academy Student Center. Indeed, these two events were so successful that the tournament’s five-year commitment to the Academy Student Center was met three years ahead of schedule. With the early pay off, the Tennis Classic committee decided to create the SJA Tennis Classic Scholarship to impact the lives of deserving young women.

THE SPIRIT OF ’66 SCHOLARSHIP

The St. Joseph’s Academy class of 1966 established The Spirit of ’66 Scholarship following the loss of three classmates within a four-week period. The scholarship memorializes the 12 deceased members of the class: Vicki Galtier Daviet, Reith Girod Diel, Pam Samaha Guarisco, Hilda Gillis Killian, Karen Knight, Kathy Henchy Leonard, Francie Hannaman Nacquin, Barbe McMahon, Christine Overton Randolph, Jackie Cashio Roshto, Jeannette Svendson and Diane Ward Toups.

The scholarship also pays tribute to the common threads of caring, concern, laughter and love that run through the class of 1966 today. The class members hope that by providing tuition assistance to deserving young women, the scholarship will provide opportunities to experience the “togetherness for life” that they found as Academy students and which continues 50 years after the class graduated.

The 1966 graduates were the first to establish a class scholarship in the SJA Foundation. In June of 2008, they planted an oak tree in front of Medaille Hall to commemorate their six classmates who were deceased at that time.

ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR NEEDY AND DISPLACED STUDENTS*

This scholarship was established in 2006 with contributions from parents and friends during the fall of 2005 after hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast. During the fall 2005 semester, St. Joseph’s Academy accepted 250 students from hurricane-impacted areas. The fund provides tuition assistance for deserving students during natural disasters and serves as a resource in such an event.

ST. JOSEPH THE CARPENTER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP *

The St. Joseph the Carpenter Endowed Scholarship was established by an anonymous benefactor in 2009 through a bequest. It recognizes the deep commitment and faith of a woman who always placed high priority on quality education for her own family. The scholarship will carry on her tradition by benefitting young women who appreciate the value of the spiritual, academic and service components of an education at St. Joseph’s Academy.

Elaine Waguespack Dean, Barbara McManus, Linda Fryoux Harvison, Dyra Culotta Hughes, Alice Dugas Greer and Gail Gaiennie were among class members who helped establish the Spirit of ’66 Scholarship.

THE REBECCA STAGG SCHOLARSHIP*

Frank Stagg and his wife Jill established and fully endowed the Rebecca Stagg Scholarship in honor of Frank’s mother’s retirement after 40 years of service to St. Joseph’s Academy. Rebecca retired at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year as the Academy’s librarian. Frank said that his parents worked hard to provide a Catholic education to him and his sister, Marie, a 2002 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy. Frank is a 1998 graduate of Catholic High School. “My Catholic education has served as a strong foundation in my life,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be able to help provide that foundation to a deserving young woman.”

THE DOROTHY PHILIPPS STUART FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP*

Her husband Robert "Bob" Stuart, son Rob Stuart, daughter Sally Stuart Morgan and son-in-law Jim Hall created The Dorothy Philipps Stuart Family Scholarship in memory of Dotty, a 1942 alumna of SJA and a member of the first class to graduate from the "new school" on Broussard Street. Dotty went to LSU on a full four-year scholarship and graduated with a degree from the College of Commerce. She and Bob were married 57 years. They raised their family in Baton Rouge, where Dotty was active in the community and held leadership roles with many organizations, including Junior League of Baton Rouge and Camp Fire Girls. She was also a faithful volunteer at her children’s schools: St. Aloysius, St. Joseph’s Academy and Catholic High School.

Dotty has numerous relatives who are alumnae of SJA. Daughter Sally Morgan graduated from SJA in 1975, and the late Katherine "Kit" Hall graduated in 1977. May credits SJA for laying the foundation of her education, spirit of philanthropy and dedication to caring for her community.

THE LOIS OURSO TAYLOR ’46 AND KELLY SWORD HURTADO ’81 SCHOLARSHIP*

Lois Ourso Taylor ’46 and Kelly Sword Hurtado ’81 established the scholarship in their name to help provide an SJA education for young women whose families may otherwise be unable to afford it. Lois was one of six children. They grew up in the SJA neighborhood and attended Sacred Heart and either SJA or Catholic High School. Lois believed the family received a break in the cost of tuition, enabling the family to afford a Catholic education for all of their children. This heightened Lois’ desire to help other families.

The family’s Academy legacy continues through another generation of graduates. Both of Kelly’s daughters are alumnae: Alexandra, class of 2005, and Daniela, class of 2013.

TARAJANO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP*

Lois Ourso Taylor and Kelly Sword Hurtado Members of the Tarajano family

Linda values the education Katie received at the Academy because it gave her the tools and criticalthinking skills needed to make the important decisions that impact her life. Among the life skills Katie learned are compassion and a dedication to loving and serving the dear neighbor. She also learned independence, confidence and leadership skills to be a successful young woman in a fast-paced, global economy.

Katie is a May 2020 graduate of the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University with degrees in entrepreneurial business and graphic design. She is self -employed as a graphic designer. KAY AND ROLAND TOUPS SCHOLARSHIP*

In support of their belief in a Catholic school education, Kay and Roland Toups established the Kay and Roland Toups Endowed Scholarship. The Toups also cited the education received by their daughter, Suzie Toups Adler ’85, as a basis for the creation of the scholarship. “The payoff is that SJA educates the whole person, academically and spiritually,” Roland Toups said.

The Toups are the grandparents of SJA graduates Stephanie Toups ’12, Kathryn Adler ’13, Shelby Toups ’15 and Allie Adler ’16. Their scholarship will benefit the families of girls in financial need and will help ensure that the Academy remains viable for generations to come.

More recently, the funds have allowed the transition to tablet computers as well as a commitment to constant improvement in the use of interactive classroom technology. The Sevin Fund allows SJA to emphasize network security and maintain a wireless infrastructure to take advantage of emerging technologies.

In 2002, SJA was one of three schools in the nation to receive the U.S. Department of Education’s Special Emphasis Award in Technology. Throughout the years, SJA’s technology program has been honored by numerous national and international organizations.
