Editor’s note: Following is the address Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 delivered during the commencement exercises for the St. Joseph’s Academy class of 2023.
Throughout our journey, we experience a series of relationships, and these relationships are the foundation of our lives, intrinsic to everything we do and who we are. Relationships connect us to God, to family, to friends, to purpose, to joy and to opportunities for us that are central to our experiences and growth. Relationships bring unity to our lives.
As Pope Francis said, “There is a spark of divine light in each of us. Listen and that light will lead your way … through the many relationships you will encounter on your journey.”
Your relationship with God has been at the center of your four years at SJA. We have prayed together, celebrated mass, had opportunities for the rosary, adoration, retreats and service to the dear neighbor. You have lived daily the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph that all may be one in the arms of unifying love.
As you move forward, keep your relationship with God at the center of your life. Even a short prayer in the morning, “God, help me trust in your love,” will keep your relationship with God as a focus in your life.
Your relationship with your family has played a crucial role in your development. Always remember that family is there to help you through the difficult times and challenges in life along with celebrating your joys and achievements. Each of us has a definition of family, and often our family extends to close friends who are a crucial part of our lives. Family gives us a warm sense of belonging, of love and the courage to face life’s ups and downs. Preserve and appreciate the moments with family and embrace the treasure of time with family.
Your relationships with your friends have been a strong force in your life. They have been your champions and helped you navigate life’s challenging situations. As your journey continues, remember to keep in touch with old friends as you create new relationships.
Always remember that each new relationship you develop should lift you up, should support you, should value your gifts, should align with your faith and values and should always allow your voice to be heard. Remember that you are an SJA woman. You hold a rare combination of personal characteristics, intellectual commitment and a purposeful vision that comes from God’s presence in your life. You have a desire to make meaningful contributions to your world. Every relationship in the future should enhance your goodness and fill you with hope. You embody sanctity, joy and action. Always believe in yourself and become the woman God intends you to be.
Relationships are a part of our lives, and each day is filled with moments and connections to God, family and friends. Nurture these relationships and be open to new ones. Let us give thanks for the people who enrich our lives. Remain constant and true to yourself, your beliefs and to the values you embody as SJA women. Always remember that what lies behind you and what lies in front of you pale in comparison to what lies inside of you.
You are shining stars.
You are gifted.
You are beautiful.
You are loved.
You are women of grace.
You are women for others.
Trust in God’s love for you and our love for you. WE ARE SJA

SJA students gathered in the orchard for the dedication of the sacred green space to the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Lucy Silvio reflected on the historical significance of the orchard to the Congregation of St. Joseph. More than a dozen Sisters of St. Joseph came to campus for the dedication of the orchard. Pictured (seated) left to right are Sister Cynthia Sabathier, Sister Lucy Silvio, Sister Anna Schellhaas, Sister Kathleen Babin, Sister Evelyn Mee, Sister Adele Lambert, (standing) Principal Stacia Andricain, Sister Julie Kraemer, Sister Janet Roesener, Sister Annie Ramagos, Sister Adelaide Williamson, Sister Chris Pologa, Sister Frances Landry, Sister Joan Laplace and President Jan Breen.St. Joseph’s Academy dedicated its orchard to the Sisters of St. Joseph in a special ceremony on the morning of April 26. A large plaque had been installed near the orchard during the week prior to the dedication.
President Jan Rhorer Breen welcomed the Sisters in attendance: Sisters Lucy Silvio, Cynthia Sabathier, Adelaide Williamson, Adele Lambert, Anna Schellhaas, Annie Ramagos, Evelyn Mee, Frances Landry, Janet Roesener, Joan Laplace, Julie Kraemer, Kathleen Babin and Chris Pologa. She also introduced the Associates of the Congregation of St. Joseph who were present, as well as the Inquirers, who are undertaking the process of discernment to become lay associates.
Breen explained the history of the orchard, which was planted with pecan trees when the Sisters purchased 15 acres of farmland on Broussard Street, the current home of SJA, in 1940. “This land had only one tree on it,” Breen said. “The Sisters wanted to perpetuate the pecan orchard (from the original property in downtown Baton Rouge) on this new property, so Mother St. Rose gathered pecans from the last crop of pecan trees downtown and planted them here. This orchard connects our beginning in 1868 to our present location and to our future here at SJA. The trees and this area are beautiful reflections of the gift of the Sisters to live and work that all may be one. The orchard is sacred green space for all to enjoy now and in the future.”
Sister Joan Laplace, a former principal of St. Joseph’s Academy and a current member of the board of directors, dedicated the orchard as “a sacred corner of our campus, so treasured for over 80 years as a special space for rest and relaxation for students, faculty, staff and neighbors.”
Sister Lucy Silvio, a member of the SJA Foundation board of directors, offered the CSJ Reflection. “Why do we want to dedicate this orchard? It is a sign of our legacy and our call,” Sr. Lucy said. “… I don’t believe that those who planted and watered and tended the trees ever voiced why they were doing it. They didn’t have to: It was an intuitive charism, a response to care of Earth. And intuitively, we have honored this legacy through the years as our Academy has grown in enrollment and in buildings. As new buildings were needed and our ground space was limited, the question came up about using the orchard ground as a site for expansion. In every case, the response was, ‘Don’t even think about it.’ It was almost a given that we needed the green space of the ground and the beauty of the trees as much as we needed the new buildings.”
Principal Stacia Andricain offered the closing prayer.
The SJA Choir performed under the direction of Danielle Laird. They were accompanied by Dean of Curriculum and Instruction Aimee Urdiales on the piano.

Paying tribute to LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, whose team would go on to win the national championship on April 2, Murtagh wore a black jacket with pink feathers on the sleeves.
The three inductees were introduced by tribute videos produced by Erin Barrilleaux Albarado ’07 and Communications

St. Joseph’s Academy graduate Hayley Arceneaux visited campus on March 3 to speak to the student body about overcoming pediatric cancer, landing her dream job as a physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and being part of the 2021 Inspiration4 spaceflight, the world’s first all-civilian mission to orbit.
Arceneaux, a 2010 SJA graduate, told the audience that learning she had osteosarcoma at the age of 10 was a gut punch. “I will never forget the moment I learned it was cancer,” she said. “I thought it was a death sentence. I didn’t know that someone could survive cancer at that age.”
Within a week, Arceneaux and her parents were headed to St. Jude in Memphis for treatment. A state-of-the-art internal prosthesis replaced the parts of her femur that were removed. She endured a year of chemotherapy and painful physical therapy. Yet through it all, she found purpose. “Looking back, that year at St. Jude gave me my mission,” she said.
When she was declared cancer free and allowed to go home to St. Francisville, Arceneaux vowed she would one day return to St. Jude to work with other children facing cancer. Knowing she wanted a career in healthcare, Arceneaux said she begged her parents to send her to SJA. “Here, girls are taught that they can do anything,” she said. “College was easy compared to SJA.”
Arceneaux majored in Spanish at Southeastern Louisiana University. She wanted to be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking families as a healthcare provider. She graduated from physician assistant school and immediately applied for a job at St. Jude. “I didn’t even get an interview,” she said.
Undeterred, she reasoned with herself that she needed to gain experience. She went to work in the emergency room at Our Lady of the Lake. But she held tight to her dream of working at St. Jude and applied the next time a PA job was posted on its website. While she was granted an interview, she was not selected for the job. “It was my birthday,” she recalled. “I ugly-cried all day. But even though I had now been told no twice, I kept pushing.”
The third time was the charm, and Arceneaux finally landed her dream job. She bought a home and said her life seemed complete. And then she received an email from St. Jude saying they wanted to discuss a “unique opportunity.”

After her talk to the student body, Hayley Arceneaux signed copies of her memoir, Wild Ride: A Memoir of I.V. Drips and Rocket Ships.
Arceneaux would learn that the opportunity involved being part of the Inspiration4 mission to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude. Arceneaux would be sent as the hospital’s ambassador. “The unknowns and any fear arising from them didn’t stop me from saying yes,” she said.
She described the grueling training process that took place over six months. “We weren’t just going to be passengers,” Arceneaux said. “We had to become trained astronauts.”
The most challenging part of the training was climbing Mount Rainier. The ascent took nine hours in bitter cold temperatures and swirling snow. The climbing party then spent two nights in tents before heading back down the mountain. “The commander wanted to do this because we needed to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” she said. “My inspiration was my patients. We ask so much of them when they are going through cancer treatment, and they never complain.”
Launch day arrived on September 16, 2021. Arceneaux said she was not nervous. She had faith and trust in the professionals behind the mission, and she found comfort in knowing she was where she was meant to be. Arceneaux made history as the youngest American to orbit the earth and the first pediatric cancer survivor in space.
She shared pictures that she took on her iPhone and described her feelings of awe and gratitude for the opportunity she’d been afforded. “When I looked down at the landmasses without borders, it was a unifying feeling,” she said. “It underlined the need to care for our fellow human beings and our beautiful planet.”
Her favorite moment from the three-day trip was the live call to her patients at St. Jude. She shared her experiences and answered their questions. “I told them that if I could do this, they could do whatever their dream was,” she said. “You can make it happen.”
When the capsule splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cape Canaveral, the mission was declared “Inspiration Complete.” Arceneaux said the crew realized that raising more than $240 million for St. Jude was more appropriately described as mission accomplished.
She told the students that there is strength in leaving their comfort zone. She encouraged them to say yes to challenges placed before them. “The beauty of life is that you don’t know what will happen,” she said. “Everyone overcomes something. Don’t give in to the despair of a moment. Always have hope.”
Following her talk, Arceneaux entertained questions from the students. Her mother, Colleen Arceneaux, described the day her daughter launched into space. Arceneaux then signed copies of her book, Wild Ride: A Memoir of I.V. Drips and Rocket Ships (Convergent Books/Penguin Random House).
Hayley Arceneaux shared a photograph taken of her enjoying the view from the cupola of Space-X’s Inspiration rocket.FIFE STUDENT COMMONS

Two new scholarships have been established in the St. Joseph’s Academy Foundation: The Mary Lynne Haydel Dupont Scholarship Award and The Lorraine and Dan Fourrier Family Scholarship.
Michael and Dr. Angele (Dupont ’91) Bourg established The Mary Lynne Haydel Dupont Scholarship Award in memory of Angele’s mother, who passed away at the young age of 34 from complications of lupus. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother.
Mary Lynne grew up in a strongly Catholic family and attended Catholic school for the entirety of her educational years. “This provided her the foundation for a strong adult faith life which allowed her to display a persevering spirit in all circumstances,” Angele said. “She remained humble and trusted in God’s wisdom and grace. She reflected the light of Christ in all aspects of her life. Everyone who knew her was touched by her selflessness.”
The Mary Lynne Haydel Dupont Scholarship benefits a deserving young woman in need of tuition assistance.
“Not only will this scholarship provide the gift of outstanding education, but it will also provide a young woman with the many blessings that go along with being an SJA student,” Angele said.
The scholarship provides the recipient with a year’s full tuition to St. Joseph’s Academy. “We couldn’t think of a better way to honor my mother’s memory than to award a deserving young woman with the gift of an outstanding Catholic education,” Angele said.
The Lorraine and Dan Fourrier Family Scholarship was established by their children to provide tuition assistance to deserving students.
Lorraine and Dr. Dan Fourrier had six children: Dr. Dan Fourrier Jr., Dr. David “Jerry” Fourrier, Ann Felice Fourrier ’69, Dr. Jeanne Fourrier-Eggart ’71, Suzette Fourrier Howe ’73 and
Henri “Temo” Fourrier. Lorraine passed away in 2021 at the age of 101, while Dan passed away in 1990 at the age of 79.
“We wanted to establish the scholarship to honor Mom and Daddy’s gift to their children of a wonderful Catholic education,” Ann Felice said. “They embraced the values imparted by the Sisters of St. Joseph, and it was a tradition in my father’s family that he and his siblings attended St. Vincent’s Academy, which became Catholic High School, and St. Joseph’s Academy. Our parents knew that we would receive not only a quality education that would enable us to be successful in college and beyond, but that we would also receive a strong spiritual foundation.”
In establishing the family scholarship in their parents’ names, Ann Felice and Suzette hope to provide deserving young women with the same opportunities their siblings enjoyed. “These students might otherwise not be able to attend SJA,” Ann Felice said. “SJA graduates go out into the world and make such a difference on so many levels. We are proud to be a part of making the world a better place by ensuring an SJA education for deserving students.”
Tsehaye Geralyn Hébert won the prestigious Alliance-Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Award for her play, The C.A. Lyons Project. A 1969 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy, this nationally acclaimed playwright graduated from Northwestern University and earned an MFAW from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the first AfricanAmerican woman, the first person with a disability and, as she describes it, “the first person to hold an AARP card” to win the award, having entered graduate school postretirement.
“Winning the Alliance-Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Award is a leap forward into the world of professional theater,” Tsehaye said. “Stellar professionals at the Alliance Theatre – actors, directors, choreographer, dramaturg, costume designer, set designer, lighting designers – brought their A game to the project. It was a great place to land, and it was great to work with them. Among the five Bass Awards, Atlanta’s Toni Awards, The C.A. Lyons Project won four of its five nominations. It was one heckuva professional introduction.”
Winning such recognition for her play is even more remarkable given the health challenges she faced midway through writing it. She became critically ill, on life support and suffering paralysis, before slowly regaining her mobility, speech and health. “The entire year I spent from illness to recovery I listened to that soundtrack in my head: blues, jazz, hip-hop, rap, classical, experimental and folk music,” she said. “That helped me to recover. The work had to cohere and to coexist into a narrative structure. In retrospect, it’s a metaphor for the American polity and for its healing as I healed.”
A self-described citizen playwright and performance artist, Tsehaye is a Frank McCourt Memoir Prize finalist and is recognized as one of Thirty Chicago Writers to Watch (Guild Literary Complex). One of 80 artists selected to celebrate Gwendolyn Brooks’ 80th birthday, she most recently published the short story, Off the Wall, in Chicago Quarterly Review #33, An Anthology of Black American Literature edited by novelist and MacArthur Genius Fellow Charles Johnson. She has served as an artist and playwright-in-residence, most recently at Chicago State University.
“Our parents raised us to be citizens, and I honor them as a citizen playwright,” Tsehaye said. “My parents’ attitude was, ‘If there isn’t a door, build one. If there isn’t a doorknob, make one!’ When I complained about the lack of roles for Black actresses, my mother said, ‘Write your own plays!’
“Women pushed past historic boundaries when I came of age. I knew I could be anything I wanted to, but I didn’t personally know any writers nor any playwrights. I was expected to read, study, do chores and be of service
to our family and community. Our parents expected us to engage politically in the world around us, in our state, in our city and in our neighborhood. We didn’t have a choice. The times made us. Dad reigned at one end and my mother on the other end of the dinner table. You brought your best behavior, your manners and vibrant political debate nightly. It was the middle of the modern Civil Rights era. I never ever won an argument, by the way.”
As a cultural activist, Tsehaye founded Cook County Women Writers Workshop in the Cook County Jail and taught writing with Gallery 37/After School Matters, Chicago Dramatists, Pegasus Theatre’s Young Playwright’s Program and Madonna-St. Joseph Center, among others. She sits on Piven Theatre Company’s honorary board and is a founding member of Artists Design the Future (ADtF), a women-led company advocating affordable ownership, innovative adaptive design and creative reuse for artists and creatives. ADtF recently received funding for its project to build accessible, inclusive, artist-owned work/live space for artists, creatives and people with disabilities.
Tsehaye’s artistic inspiration comes from a variety of sources, ranging from life and spirituality to family, art, music and literature. Her dad managed the Lincoln Theater and Hotel, where she spent a great deal of her childhood. Her mother was a gifted musician, able to play any instrument. Her family home was filled with song. Her uncle played blues harp, her husband is a celebrated guitarist, her daughter is a DJ and her son is a producing musician. “I don’t think I can underestimate the critical role music plays in inspiring my work and development as a writer from a very young age until now,” she said.
When Tsehaye arrived at SJA, it was newly integrated. She said the landscape allowed her to train a longer lens on the two worlds she navigated.
“SJA expected us to be our best,” Tsehaye said. “We were studious and focused, be it in math classes or participating in sports or clubs. When I’m teaching a writing class at a school or at the county jail, I imagine Sister Felix [Loup] correcting our grammar with precision. Studying linguistics in college made me appreciate her even more. Art Club with Mr. James Burke and Drama Club with Mrs. Drusilla Balkom gave me direction and the opportunity to learn craft inside and outside class.”
Tsehaye is unfalteringly proud of her south Louisiana roots. She says her birthplace – “the land of gumbo, Mardi Gras and storytelling” – continues to influence her art to this day. “A proud African-Creole Southern Louisiana woman, I’m an ambassador,” she said. “Using French Creole leads me to explain language and linguistics. I’m inspired by our cultures and traditions. Second great-grandfather Dorlis Aguilliard, a renowned Creole folk teller, inspires me across generations. I’m still discovering his legacy. Geography is important, whether it’s a gritty urban scape or rural America, my inspiration extends conversations across centuries.”
For many business owners, the thought of spreadsheets, budgets, balancing the books and tax preparation is daunting, at best. Sarah Hebert Fulton is not among them. This 2015 St. Joseph’s Academy graduate actually sees art in accounting.
“I’ve always seen it as sort of a creative outlet,” Sarah, the owner of Fulton Bookkeeping and Accounting Services, said. “It brings me satisfaction to organize and balance books. It’s like finally finishing a big puzzle when your monthly reconciliations are done. I sometimes paint and create abstract art. Accounting is kind of like that. It’s ‘turning chaos into beauty,’ which is something one of my mentors told me a while back and it always stuck with me.”
Sarah graduated from Louisiana State University in 2019 with a degree in accounting. She immediately went to work as an auditor with Postlethwaite & Netterville, then moved into corporate accounting. Although she loved the work, something was missing. “I didn’t feel that I was making enough of a difference in my community, as that has always been my goal,” Sarah said. “I wanted to use accounting to help other business owners, so I decided to take the jump and start my own practice.”
Sarah established her business in March of 2022. Her initial focus was working with small business owners, but in the 15 months since she hung out her shingle, she has realized that working with womenowned businesses was a big part of her passion. “I currently work with photographers, wedding planners, florists and many others,” she said. “I offer monthly bookkeeping, quarterly bookkeeping and other services that any business owners may need. I really value human interactions and knowing that I’m helping to make a difference in someone’s life.”
Sarah’s mission is to ensure that business owners feel confident in their finances, while also helping to relieve the stress that bookkeeping can cause. “Accounting is my passion, and to be able to use it to help people means the world to me,” she said.
Even as a child, Sarah dreamed of a profession dedicated to helping others. For a time, she thought about entering the counseling field, but after learning about accounting in high school, she knew it was the perfect way to combine her love of keeping balance, organization and helping others in one job.
At SJA, Sarah sang in the choir. She was an alto and loved singing that voice part “because even though it may not be as prominent as soprano, the music just wouldn’t be the same without it. That’s how I think about accounting/bookkeeping. It’s in the background, but the business runs smoothly only if your books are in order.”
Sarah is married to Andrew Fulton, a St. Michael the Archangel High School graduate she met during their junior year of high school. They live in Baton Rouge with their dog and two cats. She is one of four siblings: Her brothers, Cameron and Colin Hebert, graduated from Catholic High School, and her sister, Catherine Hebert, is a 2020 Academy graduate.
When not hard at work, Sarah enjoys reading, driving around town on sunny days, working out, gardening, cooking with Andrew and exploring local restaurants. All the while, she is committed to making a difference in the lives of business owners.
“My goal is to continue growing Fulton Bookkeeping so I can hopefully have an impact on small/medium businesses locally and around the country,” she said. “I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, not only professionally but personally, and I am so excited to see what lies ahead with Fulton Bookkeeping.”

Summer at St. Joseph’s Academy has arrived. The crepe myrtles in the courtyard are blooming. The class of 2023 has graduated, and our underclasswomen and faculty are off to enjoy their summer vacation. As the school year comes to a close, so does the 2022-2023 Annual Fund campaign.
The SJA Annual Fund is designed to involve our entire community – parents, alumnae and friends – in the ministry of Catholic education. The Annual Fund ensures that SJA is able to provide the quality and variety of academic, co-curricular and extracurricular programs that give each student the opportunity to fulfill her full potential. Every component of an SJA education is served by a successful Annual Fund campaign, so every student and program benefits from your gift.
The focus of the Annual Fund is to involve as many people in our community as possible by inviting them to make a gift that is within their philanthropic budget. Whether it is a new alumna giving $10 or a longtime supporter giving at the $2,000 level, every gift to St. Joseph’s Academy makes a big difference, especially yours.
Our goal for this year’s Annual Fund is to raise 4.2 percent of our operating budget. To date, our parents, alumnae and friends have generously given more than $600,000 or 4.15 percent of our operating budget. We are so close to achieving our goal. It is not too late to make your gift today!
Our fiscal year ends June 30. Will you please help us reach our goal? Don’t wait. Gifts can be made online at www.sjabr.org. Click on the “Give Online” button at the top of the screen. Or mail a check to SJA Foundation, 3015 Broussard Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. You can also text your donation. Text to the number 41444. By including a charitable gift, called a bequest, in your will or living trust, you can plan to support St. Joseph’s Academy after your lifetime and after you have used your assets to support you and your loved ones.
Other advantages of bequests:
• Easy. A few sentences in your will or living trust complete the gift.
• Revocable. Until your will or trust goes into effect, you are free to alter your plans.
• Versatile. You can bequeath an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate to St. Joseph’s Academy.
If you are interested in giving to St. Joseph’s Academy through a bequest, you will need official bequest language.
We strongly recommend that you speak to a qualified legal and financial advisor in preparation of your will. Share the sample bequest language for St. Joseph’s Academy with your advisor:
“I, (name), of (city, state, zip code) give, devise and bequeath to St. Joseph’s Academy of Baton Rouge (written amount or percentage of the estate) for its unrestricted use and purpose.”
We understand this is a private and personal matter, but if you would be willing to kindly let us know of your plans to remember St. Joseph’s Academy in your will, it would be greatly appreciated. Doing so allows us to thank you and recognize you as a member of The Legacy Society. St. Joseph’s Academy has been named a STEM School of Excellence by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA). ITEEA recognizes outstanding schools for their commitment to providing a robust Integrative STEM education program and for exemplifying outstanding leadership in STEM education.
SJA is one of only 19 schools from across the country to receive ITEEA STEM School of Excellence recognition for the 2022-2023 school year. Schools will be officially awarded at ITEEA’s 85th annual conference to be held in Minneapolis in April.
“This distinction truly is a recognition of campus-wide initiatives culminating in a rich environment of brilliant, capable and passionate students, faculty and staff,” said Meagan Moore, a 2006 Academy graduate and manager of SJA’s Andrea Clesi McMakin ’74 STEM Lab. “It is a validation of what we have known about the capabilities of St. Joseph’s Academy for a long time.”
Recognized schools undergo a rigorous application process requiring detailed documentation to demonstrate a strong Integrative STEM program. ITEEA created the designation as a way to officially recognize those schools whose teachers, administrators and other stakeholders are providing a meaningful STEM education experience for students.
“STEM education is more than just a subject or a class,” Moore said. “It is a mindset that encourages curiosity, innovation and creativity. In accepting this award, we seek to continue to honor the pursuit of excellence in STEM education and the knowledge and skills the students will take with them to make a difference in the world.”
St. Joseph’s Academy’s winter and spring sports teams finished the 2022-2023 year with a bang. Following the fall season in which the swim team won its 12th consecutive state championship, the cross country team won its seventh straight state title and the volleyball team advanced to the semifinal round, the winter and spring sports teams won two state titles and had two runner-up finishes.
For the first time in the 32-year history of the SJA soccer program, the Redstickers are the LHSAA Division I state champions. The topseeded Redstickers turned in a dominating performance during the February 25 title game against sixth-seeded Dutchtown, outshooting their opponents 23-3. Battling a stingy Dutchtown defense all night, the Redstickers scored their one and only goal in the 72nd minute. Pictured are the team’s seniors with the championship trophy, from left, Ellis Hosch, Avery Oubre, Riley Wilson, Isabella Lalonde and Madison Hitzman.
The tennis team won the LHSAA Division I State Championship for its third title in a row. The team of Shobe Manuel and Caroline Pousson won the doubles state championship. In singles competition, Ella Mancuso and Laura Caroline Holliday were semifinalists. The two-day tournament was held April 24 and 25 at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
The gymnastics team finished second in the 2023 LHSAA State Gymnastics Meet, held April 15 at Baton Rouge High School. The Redstickers scored 229.550 points to finish behind state champion Dutchtown (231.050). The level 8 team finished in fourth place with 74.575 points; the level four team finished third with 114.00 points and the level three team finished second with 115.275 points.
The track and field team brought home the runner-up trophy from the 2023 LHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, held February 18 in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse at LSU. The Division I meet featured 33 teams. Scotlandville finished first with 71 points, followed by SJA with 55. The Redstickers recorded three school-record performances, five personal records and six season best records during the championship meet.
In the Class 5A LHSAA State Outdoor Championships on May 6 at LSU, the Redstickers finished fourth, scoring 54 points to finish behind Scotlandville and Zachary, each with 70 points, and Barbe with 58. There were 40 teams in the field.
The softball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Division I (select) playoffs. Seeded No. 8, SJA fell to No. 1 St. Thomas More, 13-4, in Lafayette. The Redstickers ended the season with a 17-8 record. The team is pictured here after its April 12 game against West Feliciana, which raised awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
The bowling team qualified for the state playoffs for the first time under the 16-team format. The No. 13 seed Redstickers played No. 4 C.E. Byrd in the regional round of the 2023 Ochsner LHSAA Girls Bowling State Championship at All-Star Lanes on March 22. The Redstickers came up short against last year’s state runner-up, 23-4. Junior Jordan Wingerter (center) had a high game of 189, while freshman Molly Milligan (484 series, 179 high game) and sophomore Blakely Prestridge (465 series, 170 high game; left) had their season high series and games. Wingerter qualified for the state singles tournament, finishing just seven pins short of the cut for the stepladder finals. Pictured
In just its second year, the St. Joseph’s Academy powerlifting team qualified three members for the LHSAA Powerlifting State Championships, held March 22-25 at the Cajundome in Lafayette. Senior Cori Claire Ellis (third from left) finished second in her weight class with a 675-pound total, becoming SJA’s first podium finisher. Senior Shelby Soileau (left) finished eighth in her weight class with a 695-pound total, and junior Audrey Lieux (right) finished fifth in her weight class with a 780-pound total. The lifters are pictured with Coach Matt Shelton.
The St. Joseph’s Academy golf team finished sixth in the 2023 Division I Ochsner Health LHSAA State Golf Championships, held May 1 and 2 at Les Vieux Chenes Golf Club in Youngsville. SJA posted a team score of 385. Sophomore Ava Heine (center) finished in 12th place overall with a two-day total of 179 (86-93) on the par 74 course. Also representing SJA in the state championships were senior Neely Rispone (left) and junior Abby Stevens (right). This year marked the first time in five seasons that the Redstickers qualified for the tournament.
Several St. Joseph’s Academy seniors signed their national letters of intent during signing ceremonies at the school and will compete at the collegiate level next year.
At a signing ceremony in December, five seniors inked their commitment papers. MADISON HITZMAN will play soccer for Spring Hill College. RACHEL KERR is joining the track and field team at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. BROOKLYN WILKINSON will play beach volleyball at Nicholls State University. ELLIE FOCO is joining the volleyball team at Belmont Abbey College.
TAYLOR STOCKWELL will play volleyball at Southeastern
In April, three seniors signed their national letters of intent. SIMONE CASTELLUCCIO will join the track and field team at the University of Pennsylvania. ELLIS HOSCH will play soccer at McNeese State University ELLA DUPRE will join the dance team at the University of Mississippi.
St. Joseph’s Academy was well represented at the 37th annual Athlete of the Year/Star of Stars banquet on May 22 at the L’Auberge Event Center. Rising senior Hannah Vaughan was named the 2022 Star of Stars in Cross Country. Recent graduate Maddie Hitzman was named the 2023 Star of Stars in Soccer. Recent graduate Shobe Manuel was named the 2023 Star of Stars in Tennis. The SJA swim team was one of three 2023 Girls Team of the Year finalists.
The Challenge Day trophy will stay at St. Joseph’s Academy for another year after the Redstickers defeated the Bears of Catholic High School in a thrilling 8-7 battle at CHS Stadium. This 17th annual competition was hosted by the student councils of both schools.
SJA captured the Can Drive, Memory Game, Spider Run and PVC Pass. CHS won the Jug Transfer, Uniform Swap, Bucketball and Egg Toss.
SJA Student Body President Shobe Manuel said winning this year’s competition to retain the trophy was an exhilarating experience. “My favorite part was witnessing the strong sense of community amongst our Redsticker sisters during Challenge Week and especially during Challenge Day,” she said. “Student Council, Challenge Day athletes and the SJA community worked hard for many hours during Challenge season, and it was gratifying to have our dedication culminate with a win.”
Senior Alexandra Funes was a coach of the winning memory team. She said triumphing over CHS as a senior was truly meaningful. “It is so rewarding to bring the trophy back home after seven weeks of hard work and determination that we put into this day,” she said. “I will always remember the energy and electricity in the air both at the field during Challenge Day and during the Challenge Day pep rally. Challenge Day is such a special tradition because it not only unites SJA to beat the boys, but it also unites both schools to the common goal of providing cans for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.”
SJA collected 33,450 pounds of food during the weeklong Challenge Day Can Drive. Coupled with $543 in monetary donations, the Academy community will provide 29,504 meals to those facing food
Student Body President Shobe Manuel, front left, and Vice President Ava Kathryn Nesbit, right, pose with the victorious Challenge Day coaching staff and trophy. The following tribute donations were made between January 24 and April 30, 2023. Please remember in your prayers those who are being honored as well as those who honored them.
