FROM THE PRESIDENT

How can you embrace the many changes that are a part of your life’s journey?

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE AN SJA WOMAN. You hold a rare combination of personal characteristics, intellectual commitment, a purposeful vision that comes from God’s presence in your life and a desire to make meaningful contributions to the world. Hold on to your memories and experiences of SJA that draw forth and enhance your goodness, and let these memories fill you with hope. You embody sanctity, joy and action. Always believe in yourself and become the woman God intended you to be.

Embracing Changes

ON LIFE’S JOURNEY

Editor’s note: Following is the address Jan Rhorer Breen ’69 delivered during the commencement exercises for the St. Joseph’s Academy class of 2021. Throughout life, there are moments that transform us. In these moments, we experience a change that will forever impact the way we live, our relationships with others and the way we see the world. Class of 2021, you have experienced a transformative year that has touched your lives, that has changed your lives. Look back on what you have learned this past year and take forward the miracles that were revealed to you. Trappist Monk Thomas Merton said, “You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and changes offered by the present moment and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope.”

4 | S J A C O N N E C T I O N S From the President

Be a model of our patron St. Joseph, who was loving, courageous and a humble servant. Be a woman who loves, who is generous to others and uses her talents to serve the dear neighbor. Be courageous and be a woman of great faith. Take risks to become the best version of yourself. Be a humble servant by using your energy to build a better world, to leave a legacy that embraces a world impacted by your service and love.

LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE. God is always speaking to you. Eliminate the noise in your life that drowns out God’s voice. You have one of the greatest challenges today with all the noise of social media, technology and the continuous “plugged-in world” in which we live. The noise will become even louder in the next four years, in the many changes you will experience. I urge you to take time to lower the volume so you can listen to God and hear Him helping you along your journey. As Pope Francis said, “There is a spark of divine light in each of us. Listen, and the light will lead your way through change.”

UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF SUCCESS. True success is peace with God and becoming the woman God intended you to be. It has been said that what is meant for you will never miss you, and what misses you was never meant for you. In the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, along with your family and faculty and staff of SJA, you have been given the tools to change the world. It is your time to be that change. And I believe women will lead the way and redefine what true success means in this ever-changing world. Find your place to stand, your place of wisdom, peace, strength, service and love. The mark of success is embracing life with its joys and sorrows, understanding that there are blessings in every situation along your journey, growing from all that you have experienced and knowing God is guiding you to achieve your purpose.

BE THE LIGHT OF HOPE IN THE WORLD. There are people everywhere who are in need, and what great joy you can find in serving others with your unique talents. Remember, small things are sometimes bigger than you realize. Finding joy in another’s joy is the secret of happiness. Allow others to see your heart and feel your compassion and love, as I have in your four years at SJA. You hold the Light of Hope in the World.

LIVE IN A STATE OF GRATITUDE. Gratitude is the heart of life, the gateway to grace. Take a few moments each day to stop and thank God for at least one thing that happened. Everyone’s life is a full measure of graces and blessings, as well as struggles and challenges. Some of the happiest people I know are filled with gratitude, their lives rooted in compassion, generosity, prayer, forgiveness and courage.

OPEN YOUR HEART. Let your heart lead you to God’s presence in your life, every step of the way, through every change in your life. We are defined not by the changes in our life, but how we react to these changes. Have a generous heart filled with a passionate spirit, a willingness to sacrifice, a keen empathy and a love that embraces the oneness of all. As our charism theme reflects this year, “We are all one, gifted and transformed by God’s spirit.” Today is an end, today is a beginning. You leave as women for others who walk together in hope, who celebrate the gifts of each other, who live serving the dear neighbor, who know the importance of forgiving, who welcome differences and who strive to bring peace and hope to the world.

How do you embrace change? Trust that God is with you every day and in every experience and will guide you in your journey. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pale in comparison to what lies inside of you.” Remain constant and true to yourself, your beliefs and to the values you embody as SJA women. Lead the way, and make your voice and ideas heard. And always, be women of grace. We love you.

SJA COMMUNITY

St. Joseph’s Academy Joins in Celebrating THE YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH

On December 8, 1870, Blessed Pius IX proclaimed St. Joseph as Patron of the Catholic Church. On the 150th anniversary of the proclamation, Pope Francis shared personal reflections on “this extraordinary figure, so close to our own human experience.” In his Apostolic Letter, Pope Francis described St. Joseph as a beloved father; a tender and loving father; an obedient father; an accepting father; a creatively courageous father; a working father; and a father in the shadows. He wrote, “Each of us can discover in Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble.” On March 19, St. Joseph’s Academy kicked off its year-long celebration with a virtual Feast of St. Joseph prayer service live streamed on its Facebook page. Also on this day, the Academy hosted a food collection in conjunction with the Sisters of St. Joseph and their lay associates. Members of the SJA community were invited to donate food items to help those experiencing food insecurity. More than 5,000 plastic bags were filled with snacks and transported to St. Vincent de Paul. Out-of-town alumnae and friends were encouraged to make a donation to a food bank in their area.

The Year of St. Joseph art contest was also announced in March. Students were invited to submit artwork of St. Joseph representing his many titles and expressions in our church tradition: Joseph as a father, as a husband, as a worker and as a protector. Several will be chosen for banners that will be used at events during the 2021-2022 school year. Each morning, students, faculty and staff received a maxim for daily reflection. Maxims are short, spiritual sayings that Father Jean-Pierre Medaille, the founding Jesuit spiritual director of the congregation, gave to the early Sisters to help them stay rooted in God’s grace. Theology classes explored St. Joseph as the patron of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Diocese of Baton Rouge and local parishes. Students learned about St. Joseph in sacred scripture and his titles and prayed his Litany.

Students brought their donations to St. Joseph tables set up near the cafeteria. Community members were able to drop their donations off in the circle driveway in front of Mother Alice Hall, where they were greeted by Sister Joan Laplace, alumnae Renee Robinson Tullier ’83 and Wendy Williams Lutgring ’84 and members of the Mission Advancement, Admissions and Human Resources departments.

Beginning on April 21, students, faculty, staff, alumnae, parents and friends were invited to make a consecration to St. Joseph, placing themselves under his powerful protection and continued patronage. The consecration to St. Joseph is a prayer of entrustment, when St. Joseph is asked to be a special friend, protector and father, as he was to Jesus. Through this devotion, the SJA community placed their lives in his fatherly hands, trusting that St. Joseph will always quietly and humbly lead them to Jesus. Prayers continued for nine days until the consecration day on April 30, the eve of the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Prayers were prayed as a school on campus and posted to social media for all who wished to join from afar.

Each Monday morning, Academy students, faculty and staff prayed Pope Francis’ Prayer to St. Joseph. Parents, alumnae and friends were mailed a copy of the prayer and invited to join the school community in praying each Monday.

During the 2021-2022 school year, each discipline will have a lesson or project which focuses on St. Joseph and is tied to the curriculum. These lessons will be implemented between August and December of 2021.

1 Sophomore Avery Bruce lit a candle to begin the virtual prayer service which celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph on March 19. Students in classrooms and watching from home, as well as those joining the service as it was streamed on SJA’s Facebook page, were invited to light candles as symbols of unity. The virtual celebration helped kick off SJA’s celebration of the Year of Saint Joseph.

Embarks Upon Next Strategic Plan In 2014, St. Joseph’s Academy undertook a strategic planning process to define the goals and priorities of the school. Gathering feedback through stakeholder surveys and focus groups, SJA devised a far-reaching plan to provide the framework for sustained student success. Progress was reported in the spring of 2017, and work continued towards fufilling strategic initiatives. To ensure that the Academy will continue to be guided by its mission, commitment to institutional excellence and a keen eye to the formational and educational needs of young women, a new strategic plan has been crafted that will shape the Academy’s work for the next three to five years. Building upon the fulfillment of identified goals and defined by the present and future needs of the Academy, the new strategic planning process once again invited input from alumnae, parents of current and former students, faculty and staff members, students and community leaders. After analyzing survey results, focus groups were convened to further explore specific elements of the Academy experience, including faith development, academic excellence, personal growth, behavioral health, financial sustainability, facilities, campus life, tuition, enrollment and diversity, equity and inclusion. Seven working committees were formed to devise strategies, objectives and action items across six areas of focus. Areas of need identified by the Diversity Action Committee have been incorporated into the strategic initiatives of several committees. All work will be undertaken through the lens of our Catholic identity, gospel values, theological principles and the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Under the guidance of the St. Joseph’s Academy board of directors, the working committees have been charged with moving forward to implement the new strategic plan. Assessment of work already accomplished is under way, and needed resources have been or are being secured. Timeframes have been established, and measures of success have been identified. As additional work is undertaken, we will communicate it with you through future issues of Connections.

Two New Scholarships Established

AT S T. J O S E P H ’ S A C A D E M Y

Two new scholarships have been established in the St. Joseph’s Academy Foundation: the Grace Morrison ’19 Scholarship and the Carolyn Perkins Memorial Scholarship. Sarah and Shane Morrison established the Grace Morrison ’19 Scholarship in honor of their daughter, a rising junior at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Grace is double majoring in marketing and finance and plans to pursue an MBA after completing her undergraduate work. Shane has been a member of the St. Joseph’s Academy board of directors since August of 2016. He currently serves as chairman. He and Sarah have three children: Grace, Camille, who will be a senior at SJA in the upcoming school year, and Porter, who will be in the 8th grade at St. Jean Vianney. The Morrisons truly value the gift of a Catholic education and treasure the opportunity to benefit deserving young women who otherwise may not be able to attend the Academy. At the heart of SJA’s endowed scholarship program is the vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph that no student has ever been denied admission solely on the basis of her family’s ability to pay full tuition. The philosophy of SJA’s tuition assistance program is that an Academy education be available to all young ladies who wish to attend and have the academic ability and motivation to succeed. “A Catholic education provides young women the opportunity to expand their knowledge, explore their passions, create community, strengthen their sense of self and come to know God all in one place,” Shane said. “Sarah and I are fortunate enough to be able to provide that to our children and feel that no parent should ever be faced with the difficult decision to choose otherwise due to finances.” Establishing a scholarship in her name is a wonderful way for Grace’s family to pay tribute to the school that has played such an important role in her formation. “I could go on and on about what SJA meant to me, but

to sum it all up, SJA meant the world plus even more,” Grace said. “Not only was it a place where I could be my truest self, but it was also a place where I was pushed to give my all to everything and form into the best version of myself that I could be. I was taught that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to, and the work ethic that SJA pushed me to have exemplified just that.” In addition to the faith-filled environment and academic rigor provided by the Academy, Grace said she grew as a young woman because of her high school’s strong sense of community. “It was where I formed my closest friendships and relationships,” she said. “The Academy gave me my best friends to this very day whom I consider a part of my family. “I feel as though I would be a completely different individual today were it not for my time at SJA,” Grace added. “SJA taught me an endless number of things, but most importantly, I learned how to be a leader, I learned teamwork, what the true meaning of a sisterhood is and what it means to be loved and cared for. SJA truly is like no other high school, and to this day, I wish I could do it all over again. My four years there were truly some of the best years of happiness, growth, success, love and friendship of my entire life. The experiences SJA gave me were unlike any other.” After completing her MBA, Grace plans to move to Dallas, where she hopes to work for a marketing agency. Her ultimate career goals involve becoming a chief marketing officer for a business in the sports, hospitality or entertainment industries. The Carolyn Perkins Memorial Scholarship has been established by her family in memory of the educator whose teaching career spanned 30 years and whose passion for learning made a lasting impact on everyone she knew. Creating the scholarship in Carolyn’s name were her daughter and son-in-law, Cookie and Kerry Uffman, and her three grandchildren, Chip Uffman, Becky Uffman Eldredge ’98 and Connor Uffman. Carolyn is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. Carolyn Brabham was born on September 4, 1934, in Rochelle, Louisiana. Throughout her life, she exuded joy that was rooted in her faith. A long-time member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, she was an authentic witness of faith and provided her family with a solid faith continued on next page 15 | S J A C O N N E C T I O N S Spring 2021

foundation. She never met a stranger, and her kindness extended to every person she met. Together with her husband, John, they welcomed and entertained hundreds of people in their home. “My grandmother’s love of teaching extended long after her time in the classroom,” Becky said. “She continued to share her wisdom and life lessons with her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and their spouses and her great-grandchildren. She always encouraged us in our education and passions. She was the first college graduate in her family, and she understood the value of education. Becky points to the foundation SJA provided her as playing an integral role in shaping the woman she has become. The Academy awakened in her a desire to know God more. She also found her calling to retreat ministry as a Student Minister during her senior year. Today, more than 20 years later, Becky is still involved in retreat work and inviting people deeper in their walk with Christ. “SJA helped me believe in my voice and that I could lead as a woman in today’s world,” Becky said. “Part of my growing call in my professional life is encouraging other women to see their gifts, to empower their voices and to encourage them to use their gifts and voices to spread the Good News.” Carolyn was an ardent supporter of the interests and passions Becky discovered at SJA. Carolyn and John attended cross country and track meets and treated the cross country team to dinner after state meets in Natchitoches. “My grandmother listened to speeches before I ran for Student Council office and served as a listening ear on any topic I would bring to her, from dating, classes and projects to friendships and more,” Becky said. “She had significant influence on my faith and always encouraged me in my ministry work. She wanted my SJA education to nurture my Catholic faith and values, to help me grow in confidence, see my gifts and help me know how to generously share my gifts with others.” While Becky was the first member of her family to graduate from St. Joseph’s Academy, great-granddaughter Ella Uffman is a member of the class of 2023. Another five of Carolyn’s great-granddaughters will likely follow in Becky’s footsteps, including her two daughters, Abby and Mary.

Online Brownie Baking Class Draws Hundreds of Alumnae More than 400 St. Joseph’s Academy alumnae signed up for the virtual Sister Agatha Brownie Baking Class, hosted by the SJA Mission Advancement Department on March 15.

Chef Amy Patureau, left, enjoys a joke with “sous chef” and longtime SJA faculty member Brenda LeBlanc.

Chef Amy Patureau, food service director for SAGE Dining Services at SJA, led the online class with assistance from long-time SJA faculty member and former volleyball coach Brenda LeBlanc. The famous Sister Agatha brownies have been a favorite of Academy students for generations. The recipe’s creator, Sister Agatha Chauvin, arrived at SJA as a novice in 1931. For 30 years, she taught third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. In 1961, she was placed in charge of the school cafeteria and would serve as its manager for 29 years until her retirement in 1990. She was famous for her brownies, cookies and cakes.

“I had a lot of fun doing the class,” Chef Amy said. “I was thrilled to share a recipe that means so much to everyone involved with SJA and one that I am grateful to help carry on. My hope is that everyone who took the class now has the tools and confidence to recreate Sister Agatha’s brownies any time they want.” LeBlanc said serving as Chef Amy’s “sous chef” was a great experience. She said the online class was especially meaningful because it was a way to connect with SJA alumnae, something that’s been missing since the onset of COVID-19. “Sister Agatha brownies are among the first things you learn at SJA,” LeBlanc Twins Emma and Luke Bajon heartily approve said. “Their deliciousness is introduced sometime the brownies. Virtual Wine-and-Cheese Pairing Class D R AW S R AV E R E V I E W S

One hundred-thirty St. Joseph’s Academy alumnae participated in the Baton Rouge Redsticker Social Virtual Wine and Cheese Pairing Class, hosted by the SJA Mission Advancement Department on April 22. Class materials were available for pickup on campus in advance of the event, which was held on Zoom. Out-of-town participants purchased their wine and cheese at their local grocery stores. Special thanks to Lathan Alexander with Alexander’s Market who helped make the event possible. Jason Johnson, central district manager for The Duckhorn Portfolio, gave participants an overview of the label and the vineyards included in the line. Yvette Barbier Aillet, class of 2009, and Brittney LeBlanc May, class of 2004, led the informative class. Participants tasted and rated Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc, Migration Pinot Noir, Montchevre goat cheese and a Garcia Baquero Spanish cheese plate. Mission Advancement Director Meg Gerald said participants joined from all over Louisiana as well as Washington, D.C., North Carolina and Texas. “The energy in the chat room was fun and festive,” she said. “Who knew tasting wine and cheese on a Zoom call could be so much fun? I have always thought myself a wine connoisseur and a foodie. Yvette and Brittany expanded my knowledge base and appreciation of wine and cheese.” Aillet is a graduate of Nicholls State University with a degree in culinary arts. She earned a master’s in hospitality and tourism from the University of New Orleans, spending a summer studying wine and traveling to Napa and Sonoma. The course concluded with the certification exam, and she became a certified

She is now the Family and Consumer Science teacher at the Academy. “I absolutely loved doing this class,” Aillet said. “It was so nice to tap into a part of my education that I enjoyed so much that I just don’t get to use all the time. Brittney and I immediately clicked because of our shared interests, so it was fun to have a partner for the class. I hope that the ladies who participated learned a little but mostly had great time. Learning is always more fun when it’s relaxed and with good wine. I also hope that this is just the start and we can explore some more wines soon.” LeBlanc is the daughter of Randal LeBlanc, former owner of the LeBlanc’s Food Stores chain. She majored in business management at LSU, then worked in the family business until it sold in 2016. While employed at LeBlanc’s, she supervised the deli bakery operations for all nine locations. She also trained to become a certified cheese specialist. Brittney is currently in marketing for Enginuity Global. “The thing I enjoyed the most about this event was talking about the cheese: I feel as though I could eat and chat about cheese all day every day,” she said. “Food is a true passion of mine. I hope participants took away some knowledge or a fun fact that they didn’t know prior to watching in. Maybe they even had a new cheese that they hadn’t tried before.” Several former and current teachers made cameo appearances, including Susan Tittlebaum, Kathy Saichuk, Holly Randow, Brad Buras and Stephen Barrios.

Cheryl Hall-DeRouen ’79 and Eddie tasted the Migration Pinot Noir.

Courtney Zito Elliot, Ashley Riggs Blanchard and Aimee Dawes, members of the class of 1995, shared the wine-andcheese pairing class.

Amy Andrews ’06, Beulah Andrews and Holly Heroman Andrews ’79 enjoyed a multigenerational wine-tasting experience.

Share Treasured Memories The St. Joseph’s Academy Archives thanks the alumnae, their families and friends who share their treasures and memories with us throughout the year. If you have an item or items you’d like to donate, please contact Archivist Sara Brignac at brignacs@sjabr.org or (225) 388-2346.

Megan Stevenson ’01 shared event T-shirts, a group photo from the junior class’ annual trip to Washington, D.C., graduation medals and tassels and a variety of papers from her time at SJA.

Jim Fonte, the son of Jennie Crifasi Fonte, donated his mother’s school ring to Archives after she passed away in May of 2020 at the age of 102. Jennie graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1934. Not long before she died, Jennie enjoyed a visit from her great-niece, Julie Holliday Crifasi ’85 (far right), and Julie’s daughter, Grace Anne Crifasi ’22. “SJA was always very dear to Aunt Jennie,” Julie said.

Judith Landry Hales ’65 donated copies of the student newspaper, red beanies and several medals.

Mary Altazan, a former member of the St. Joseph’s Academy staff, donated a number of items that belonged to her mother, Katie Brooks, a 1940 graduate of SJA. Among the treasures was a photograph of the SJA basketball team, including Sister Jane Moore ’41. Also donated were dance cards, a copy of The Register that features the class of 1940 and a photograph of the class of enjoying a lunch gathering in 2003.

Anne Becker Yeargain, class of 1945, shared a picture of seven seniors who were students at St. Joseph’s Academy since the first grade. They were the first four-year group to graduate from the school on Broussard Street, which opened in the summer of 1941. “What a beautiful journey,” Anne said. Pictured from left are (front row) Anne Becker Yeargain and her now deceased classmates, Janice Rodriguez Bahm, Esther Ann McHardy Chenevert, (back row) Beth Weil Arrighi, Rosemary Posey Boyett, Marjorie Harelson (later Sister Ursula Harelson, CSJ) and Emma Melancon White.

ANNUAL FUND

W E ’ V E C O M E A L O N G W AY B E C A U S E O F Y O U The 2020-2021 school year was quite a journey with plenty of challenges. But we have crossed the finish line strong, confident and optimistic, especially because of donors like you. When we began the 2020-2021 school year last August, we didn’t know what to expect. Now, almost 11 months later, we can reflect on the life-changing lessons gained by our young ladies during this transformational period in their lives: •How a global crisis can prepare them to quickly adapt to changing circumstances that require flexibility, ingenuity, technical proficiency, determination and a positive attitude. •How vital it is to serve the dear neighbor, especially during a crisis. •How, despite physical distance, the bonds of friendship, compassion and common goals are rock solid and can endure the toughest of times. GIVE DAY BREAKS RECORDS March 19, 2021, was a record-breaking day for St. Joseph’s Academy. Every year, in honor of the Feast of St. Joseph, the Academy invites the school community to show their support during SJA’s Give Day, a 24-hour online giving event to benefit the Annual Fund. With more than 700 donors, SJA Give Day raised more than $110,000, making it the largest giving day in St. Joseph’s Academy history.

•How the sacred threads of a tight-knit community of caring faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumnae, parents of graduates and friends can provide the moral and financial support needed to overcome all the hurdles that 2020-2021 offered. We are both humbled by and proud of the outpouring of support from our SJA community. Hundreds of you have made gifts to the Annual Fund to help our students continue to succeed during these unprecedented times. We truly appreciate the generosity of each of you. Our goal for the 2020-2021 Annual Fund is to raise 3.9 percent of our operating budget. To those of you who have already made your gift, thank you very much. For those who have not yet had the opportunity to give, please consider making a donation today by visiting our website at www.sjabr.org/giving or sending a check to the SJA Foundation, 3015 Broussard Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. SJA Ends Year Like No Other The year that began in August with a hybrid plan of oncampus and online learning came to an end in May with the creatively planned celebration of traditional events, especially for the senior class of 2021. Senior Retreat,

Challenge Day, SJA Prom, May Crowning, Seniors’ Last Day, Senior Mass, Honors Convocation and Graduation were held with restrictions and protocols designed to keep participants safe. The members of the class of 2021 gathered at the Raising Cane’s River Center on March 8 for their senior retreat. The theme of the socially distanced event was I Will Follow. In a typical year, the seniors travel to Tall Timbers Baptist Conference Center in Forest Hill for a two-day retreat in October. But COVID-related restrictions delayed the class retreat until March and eliminated the overnight stay. While Senior Retreat looked different, the class of 2021 embraced the day, which included witness talks, experiences to connect with classmates, prayer times and mass. SJA lost a hard-fought Challenge Day 2021 battle to Catholic High School on March 26. With revamped games, a change of venue to Olympia Stadium and attendance limited to seniors and competing athletes, the 15th competition between the two schools was held in compliance with COVID safety protocols. The final score was CHS 11-SJA 4. Both schools met their Challenge Day Food Drive goals and were awarded 2 points each. More than 91,000 pounds of canned food was collected for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, which equates to more than 84,000 meals for those in need. The Academy held its traditional May Crowning ceremony on May 5 in the Academy Student Center. The senior class was in attendance, while the ceremony was livestreamed on SJA’s Facebook page for underclass students in the classrooms and families at home. Senior Sarah Branstetter was chosen by her classmates, the faculty and staff to crown Mary. Also chosen to participate in the ceremony were seniors Clare Dillman, Anna Camille Eagleton, Charlotte Fuller, Hailey Griggs, Anna Michael Ieyoub, Elizabeth Lemann, Mallory Matthews, Sarah Manning Miller and Tiffany Tran. The 10 participating seniors were chosen because they demonstrate honesty, integrity, a strong moral character, a genuine responsiveness to the needs of the dear neighbor and a commitment to their Catholic faith. Members of the class of 2021 enjoyed the Last Rodeo on their final day of class on May 6. Donning their finest cowboy hats and Western attire, the seniors enjoyed a barbeque lunch and snow balls as they bid farewell to their faculty and classrooms. The soon-to-be-graduates concluded their final day with the traditional Seniors’ Last Walk through campus. Underclasswomen, faculty and staff lined the walkways of campus to wave, hug and cheer for the seniors.

Seniors and their parents gathered in the Academy Student Center on May 7 for the traditional Senior Mass, celebrated by Father Joshua Johnson, pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant. Underclass students in classrooms and families at home watched the mass livestreamed on SJA’s Facebook page. In his homily, Father Josh told the seniors that they graduate from SJA with an excellent education, thanks to their teachers and the Sisters of St. Joseph. They enjoyed wonderful formation and made friendships that will last a lifetime. But even with all of these gifts, we are not complete without God, he said. “The most important thing you learn is that you can’t do it by yourself, and you don’t do it alone,” Father Josh said. “Walk with your sisters toward the One who can accomplish all things. Four years at St. Joseph’s, and it all culminates with us saying to God, ‘I need you. Your grace is sufficient.’” St. Joseph’s Academy honored the class of 2021 at the 55th annual Honors Convocation, held May 19 at Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. The evening event was sponsored by the faculty and alumnae of SJA. The members of the graduating class were introduced as they were escorted across the stage. They were then inducted into the Alumnae Association as the Academy’s 144th graduating class. A number of charism, athletic, distinguished qualities, memorial and academic awards were presented, culminating with announcement of Lydia Poché as the salutatorian of the class and Haley Marcotte as the valedictorian. The Most Reverend Michael Duca was the presider for the Celebration of Pentecost Sunday, and St. Joseph’s Academy hosted its 144th commencement exercises on May 23 at Raising Cane’s River Center. The 285 members of the class of 2021 met all standards for graduation as prescribed by the Academy and were awarded a diploma. Bishop Duca reflected on the graduates’ flexibility and faithfulness throughout the year and implored them now to step out in faith and move forward with a solid foundation of knowledge gained, new gifts and talents discovered and the love and support of family, teachers, friends, alumnae and Sisters of St. Joseph. Following mass, diplomas were awarded by Principal Stacia Andricain assisted by President Jan Rhorer Breen ’69, Dean of Academics Aubrey DeJohn, Dean of Women Erika Angarita and Dean of Curriculum and Instruction Aimee Wiles Urdiales ’93.

W I NT E R/S P R I N G S P O RTS T E A M S E XC E L After a fall sports season which saw the swim and cross country teams win their state championships and the volleyball team finish second in its state tournament, the winter/spring sports teams continued the winning ways at SJA. Another four state championship trophies were added to the Academy’s trophy case: The track and field team won its second consecutive LHSAA indoor state championship and back-toback outdoor state championship; the gymnastics team was crowned state champs; and the tennis team captured the Division I state title. Freshman Jordan Wingerter finished second in the state singles bowling tournament; the soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the state playoffs; and the basketball and softball teams made quarterfinal-round appearances in their respective state playoffs. The track and field team scored 76 points in the LHSAA Indoor Championships track meet on February 21, topping the 31team field in Division I. The track and field team won the Class 5A LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Meet on May 8. The Redstickers scored 84 points, the most in program history at the outdoor state meet, to bring home the championship trophy from LSU’s Bernie Moore Track & Field Complex. Twenty-eight teams competed for the title. The gymnastics team scored 231.10 points to win the 2021 LHSAA State Gymnastics Meet, held April 16 at Baton Rouge High School. In historic fashion, SJA finished first in all three levels of the competition, winning team titles in levels 3, 4 and 8 to capture the overall championship trophy. An Academy gymnast scored the highest number of individual points and was named the all-around champion at each level.

Bowling

Basketball

The tennis team won the 2021 LHSAA Division I State Championship in thrilling fashion, scoring 14 ½ points to finish just ahead of Mount Carmel Academy with 14 points. The Division I tournament was held April 26 and 27 at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The championship was decided when the SJA doubles team of Anne Scott Guglielmo and Shobe Manuel won a threeset duel (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) against the #1 MCA doubles team. Freshman Jordan Wingerter competed in the LHSAA State Bowling Singles Tournament, finishing second in the field of 48 bowlers. The competition was held April 27 at All Star Lanes. Wingerter bowled 168-255-213-200 for a 209 average. Her game of 255 was the second highest of the competition and her new high score. For just the third time in school history, the soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Division I LHSAA state soccer tournament. The No. 4 seeded Redstickers played a hard-fought match on the road against topseeded Dominican High School, falling 3-1 on February 19. SJA finished the year 15-4-8 and was District 5 champion for the fifth year in a row. The basketball team qualified for the 2021 LHSAA Girls Basketball Playoffs. The No. 5 seed Redstickers traveled to Scotlandville Magnet High School on February 24 to take on the No. 4 seed Hornets in a quarterfinal-round matchup. SJA fell 62-43 in a game that was close until midway through the third period. The Redstickers finished the season with a 13-9 record. The softball team wrapped the 2021 season with an appearance in the LHSAA Softball State Tournament. The Redstickers, seeded fifth in the tournament, traveled to Metairie on April 22 to take on No. 4 Archbishop Chapelle in the quarterfinal round. Chapelle would win the game. The ’Stickers finished 11-10 on the season.

RED STEPPERS WIN

National Championship

The St. Joseph’s Academy Red Steppers are national champions, bringing home top honors from the 2021 National Dance Team Championship, held April 22-25 in Orlando. The competition is administered by Universal Dance Association and is the only nationallevel dance team championship endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The Red Steppers competed in Large Varsity Jazz and Game Day, finishing first in Game Day and fourth in Jazz. “This team is just two years old, and it feels unreal to bring home a national championship,” said Coach Jade McCune. “More than that, the feeling of watching this team take the floor after a year of uncertainty with an unbreakable bond and leave every piece of themselves out there is truly the best feeling. These dancers worked endless hours with practices starting in August. They came to each practice with such positivity and grew every step of the way. We put our faith first and allowed God to guide our journey.” Hailey Griggs, a senior and captain of the team, said that the national competition is usually held in January. With COVID pushing the date back three months, there were teams across the country that opted to end their seasons early. “Coach Jade McCune questioned us as to what we wanted to do,” Griggs said. “One hundred percent of the team voted to continue, put in the work and compete for a national title. As the long months went by, we put in the blood, sweat and tears to get the team where we needed to be for nationals. We put in the work, and it paid off. The SJA Red Steppers are now national champions.”

The St. Joseph’s Academy Red Steppers strike a pose at the end of their national championshipwinning performance.

CHEERLEADERS CROWNED

National Champions

The St. Joseph’s Academy Cheerleaders won the 2021 National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC), held April 23-25 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando. The NHSCC is billed as the most prestigious high school cheerleading championship in the country. Teams must qualify for the competition by winning state-level championships.

“This has been a dream come true for me,” said Coach Mollye McManus. “Ever since I became an SJA cheerleader in 2011, I have dreamed of coaching this team. And this past weekend, we brought a national championship title back to Baton Rouge. This has been a crazy year working around COVID restrictions, major schedule changes and multiple injured athletes. These girls are resilient and so talented. They were always willing to learn new skills and made it happen, despite The SJA squad competed in the Super Varsity Division with the obstacles. Their work ethic is something every coach its traditional competition routine, which includes elite stunts, dreams of, and I could not be more proud of these girls.” tumbling, pyramids, jumps and a minute-long cheer. During Saturday’s semifinal round, SJA “hit” a perfect routine with Senior Josie Moore said being a national champion means zero deductions, moving onto the final round and bringing much more than bringing home top honors from the home the title of national champion. competition itself. It also means countless hours of work and overcoming every obstacle in the way. “Our team has become such a family, and there is no better feeling than all your hard work paying off with your best friends,” she said. “Having won my freshman year and falling short the past two years made this win even more special because as seniors, we felt as if we finally finished what we started. Winning that national championship title will always be a memory I hold close to my heart, and I hope the future SJA cheerleaders will one day get to experience the feeling of everything being worth it in the end.” The St. Joseph’s Academy cheerleaders are the winners of the 2021 National High School Cheerleading Championship.
