Throughout its 155-year history, St. Joseph’s Academy has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to its mission of providing an outstanding education grounded in faith development, academic excellence and personal growth. These three pillars of our mission statement provide the foundation on which we firmly stand, educating young women as responsible and unifying members of the world community.

The charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph serves as the spirit in which our mission is carried out. Through the annual study of the Sisters’ foundational grace, we work together in harmony, supporting one another and embracing our shared charism that all may be one. Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, we were guided by the charism theme of Great-Hearted Love: Serving the Dear Neighbor. Students, faculty and staff were called to respond to the needs of the times and all peoples without distinction.

Father Jean Pierre Medaille told the early Sisters to go out into the city and discover the needs of God’s people, then respond with generosity of heart. During the 20232024 school year, SJA students completed 31,753 hours of community service. Fifty-eight seniors went above and beyond the required service hours during each of their four years.

Our commitment to academic excellence was underscored with the announcement that St. Joseph’s Academy had been named a National Blue Ribbon School for the fifth time. SJA was previously named a Blue Ribbon School in 1991, 1996, 2002 and 2016. We are one of just eight schools in the country to have earned five Blue Ribbons. This prestigious award from the U.S. Department of Education affirms and validates the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in striving for and attaining exemplary achievement.

For the second year in a row, SJA was named a STEM School of Excellence by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. This association recognizes superior K-12 and post-secondary STEM programs in schools around the world. SJA was one of only 28 K-12 schools from across the country to receive ITEEA STEM School of Excellence recognition for the 2023-2024 school year.

One hundred percent of SJA graduates attend a four-year college or university. Members of the class of 2024 were offered admission to 152 colleges and universities. These young women were offered $38.55 million in scholarship money.

In 2024, 788 Advanced Placement exams were taken by 419 SJA students, and 386 (or 92.12 percent) of those students scored a 3 or higher on at least one exam. One hundred seventynine students earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams. These outstanding scholars earned credit at Louisiana colleges and universities as well as most four-year schools in the United States.

SJA embraces the philosophy that experiences outside of the classroom should be just as rewarding as those inside. A wide array of enriching activities bolster personal growth as our students learn important life skills including leadership, initiative, responsibility and collaboration.

It was a banner year for SJA athletics, with five teams bringing home state or national championship trophies. The swim team won its 13th consecutive Division I-Class 5A State Championship, while the cross country team won its eighth consecutive Class 5A state title. The tennis team won the 2024 LHSAA Division I State Championship for its fourth title in a row. The Red Steppers were national champions for the second time in their five-year history, bringing home top honors from the 2024 National Dance Team Championship, and the SJA Cheerleaders brought home their fourth consecutive national title, winning the 2024 National High School Cheerleading Championship.

Two teams were state runners-up: The gymnastics team finished second in the state gymnastics championship meet, and the track and field team finished second in the LHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

St. Joe Dough, SJA’s first-ever student-run business, opened for business on December 1, selling holiday cookies to students, faculty, staff and parents. Students in SJA’s Entrepreneurship class built the enterprise from scratch, learning about the world of small business ownership and management through market research and customer surveys, by creating a business plan and by studying finance and start-up costs, trends, site selection, marketing and pricing strategies. SJA hosted a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in March to showcase the new kitchen and storefront, located in the Sister Agatha Dining Hall.

In celebration of the three pillars of our mission statement, SJA dedicated the new Pillars Plaza, a green space located between Medaille Hall and the Activity Center, to symbolize faith development, academic excellence and personal growth. The St. Joseph’s Academy Labyrinth symbolizes faith development. It is dedicated to Sister Adele Lambert, who served as the Academy’s first president from 2004 to 2012. The Coastal Roots Native Plant Nursery symbolizes academic excellence. The SJA Science Club grows native seedlings and grass plugs for coastal restoration projects each year. Personal growth is symbolized by the SJA Butterfly Garden, which commemorates the school’s ongoing commitment to celebrating the spirit and abilities of neurodivergent people.

We rely upon the generosity of parents, alumnae, grandparents and friends to provide support for our vibrant and holistic educational program. In 20232024, Annual Fund gifts from 1,799 individuals and organizations raised $650,114. We are grateful for the ongoing support of all those who believe in the transformative and unique power of an Academy education.

Our Endowed Scholarship program is at the heart of one of SJA’s most treasured traditions: the ability to offer need-based tuition assistance to deserving students and their families. In keeping with the vision of the Sisters, no student has ever been denied admission or an SJA education solely on the basis of her family’s ability to pay full tuition. During 2023-2024, St. Joseph’s Academy and the SJA Foundation provided 154 students with assistance totaling $792,942.

The SJA Foundation holds 88 scholarships, 74 of which are fully endowed. Scholarships are fully endowed and perpetual when they reach $40,000. We are pleased to announce that four new scholarships were established in 2023-2024: The Penny Hallman Choral Music Scholarship, The Morello-Hebert Family Scholarship, The Dr. and Mrs. Myron A. Walker Scholarship and The Dr. Carmen PosadaPepper and Marshall St. Amant Family Scholarship.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE SJA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

When I began my chairmanship, my personal mission was to stay deeply connected to the foundation of St. Joseph’s Academy – its mission, vision and values – all while remaining grounded in our faith and spiritual strength. I believed that these core principles, which have guided us for 155 years, should continue to light our path forward. In a world of change, it can be easy to lose sight of what truly matters. In business, this is often called the brand; for us, it’s our identity.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, I marked my second year as chairman of the St. Joseph’s Academy board, feeling more enthusiastic and optimistic than ever about the road ahead. We ended the 2022-2023 academic year on an incredibly high note, with strong academic outcomes, financial stability, record-breaking enrollment and a renewed commitment to our spiritual direction. The school led with positivity, success, discipline and determination –taking charge of its narrative.

Our remarkable board, along with our dedicated president, Jan Breen, our principal, Stacia Andricain, and the entire faculty and staff, embraced this approach wholeheartedly. We recommitted ourselves to this culture and kept a laser-sharp focus on making every decision guided by these values. Sounds easy, right? Yet, with the numerous stakeholders that make up St. Joseph’s Academy, it’s a formidable challenge, but one we welcome.

As part of our strategy, we pledged to understand what matters most to our parents, contributors, investors, faculty, staff and students. Once we identified these needs and desires, we built a plan to honor each one, so long as it aligned with our mission, vision, values and spiritual framework. This included transformative projects such as the new Fife Student Commons, the Investar Quad, an enhanced faculty lounge, a state-of-the-art STEM Lab and a strengthened commitment to our faculty and staff. We also expanded communication with each group through transparency, frequent meetings and social media.

Our school and your daughters are fortunate to be led by people who are deeply passionate about both the students and the institution. It’s easy to forget that St. Joseph’s Academy is a place where young women are prepared not just for college but for life. Whatever their ambitions or dreams, the school offers them a unique and meaningful path forward.

This commitment has, once again, resulted in great rewards for our daughters and the school itself. We achieved record enrollment, experienced another year of remarkable contributions, received the National Blue Ribbon School award, strengthened our financial outlook and laid plans for the future. Above all, we have what I consider the finest faculty and staff of any high school in the nation.

On a personal note, my third daughter graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy this past year. As I watched the commencement exercises, I couldn’t help but reflect on the profound impact the school has had on my three daughters, Sophia, Chloe and Macie. Each of them experienced SJA in her own way, but all would say that St. Joseph’s prepared them to step out into the world with confidence, compassion and resilience. This blessing has extended beyond our daughters. My wife, Kathy, and I have formed lifelong friendships with many wonderful people, and watching our daughters grow with a strong spiritual foundation has been an invaluable gift.

Today, the St. Joseph’s Academy brand is strong and vibrant. I am confident that as long as we honor our mission, vision and values with unwavering faith and spiritual strength, there is no limit to what St. Joseph’s Academy can achieve. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who have assisted and supported me during my chairmanship: our board members, faculty, staff, parents, students and the entire SJA community. Your dedication, collaboration and faith have been instrumental in guiding us forward.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE SJA FOUNDATION BOARD

The mission of St. Joseph’s Academy is to educate young women as responsible and unifying members of the world community. The SJA Foundation aligns with the mission by growing financial resources to further secure our future.

During the past year, SJA saw continued change to its campus with additional resources provided to students, faculty and staff to create a dedicated commons area for gathering and to provide additional parking for safety. This year, SJA graduated one of its largest senior classes and welcomed a new class of freshmen to campus. Enrollment for the 20232024 academic year was 1,110, and the Foundation provided assistance to 154 students.

In the spirit and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, SJA offers opportunities for faith development in

the Catholic tradition, academic excellence and personal growth. The administration, faculty and staff continue to provide academic leadership and support to the students with these guiding principles. Their dedication to the mission of SJA is vital and greatly appreciated. We are most fortunate to have them as educators in our students’ lives. Impressively, SJA was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for the fifth time. Congratulations to our administration, faculty, staff and students on this tremendous honor. Few schools nationally have had the Blue Ribbon honor bestowed upon their school as frequently as SJA has.

SJA President Jan Breen and the Mission Advancement staff secured contributions to the Foundation of more than $1.8 million and established four new scholarships. The Foundation ended the fiscal year with $12.5 million in total assets. Through continued donor support and investment portfolio oversight, the Foundation continues to support the ongoing needs of the SJA community. In harmony with the mission of SJA, the Foundation supports families through tuition assistance and supports future campus facility projects.

The SJA Foundation grew over the last year as a result of generous contributions from our donors and a positive year of portfolio earnings. With guidance from our advisor, the board continually evaluates and monitors the asset allocation of the portfolio for the anticipated economic environment. As the economic environment changes, the board will look to its

Investment Policy Statement and our advisor to provide the information and the resources to manage our portfolio.

The SJA Foundation has a board of professionals who hold several professional designations, including CFA, CFP, CPA and CIMA. The members of the board represent decades of investment and executive business experience. As the outgoing Board Chair, I am fortunate to have served with such accomplished board members. Their collective guidance will continue to have a positive impact on the Foundation’s results. During the year, one of our board members, Samford Roy, passed. His love for and dedication to St. Joseph’s Academy and his professional insights will be dearly missed. We continue to keep his family in our prayers.

Through your generosity, this Foundation is a reflection of the love and support of family, friends and alumnae. Your continued financial support provides the opportunity for future young women to have their education and future shaped at SJA.

SJA FOUNDATION: FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

The SJA Foundation was established in 1968 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the school’s founding. Its purpose is to ensure the permanence and viability of the Academy and to guard the school’s assets for future generations. The SJA Foundation is the vehicle where funds are collected, managed and distributed. All funds are invested under the supervision of the SJA Foundation Board.

The growth of the SJA Foundation comes from donations of all sizes and from investment earnings. Donations include honorary and memorial gifts, bequests, endowed scholarships, special awards and various other contributions.

Named scholarships are endowed with a contribution of $40,000, which may be given outright or pledged over five years. Scholarships are a lasting tribute to those honored and a perpetual benefit to the SJA scholarship program. Once a scholarship or fund reaches the endowed level, earnings provide funds for tuition assistance. Further contributions of whatever size become part of the principal, thus increasing the earnings potential. Grants from the SJA Foundation are made annually to students desirous and deserving of an SJA education but whose families cannot afford full tuition.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of St. Joseph’s Academy is to educate young women as responsible and unifying members of the world community. In the spirit and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph, St. Joseph’s Academy offers opportunities for faith development in the Catholic tradition, academic excellence and personal growth.

SJA FOUNDATION DONORS | ANNUAL FUND PROGRAM

Gifts to the Annual Fund have an enormous impact on SJA’s ability to enhance its standards of excellence in teaching, student development and facilities. Annual gifts fuel the success of the Academy and touch every aspect of our students’ experience. The entire campus benefits from Annual Fund dollars.

In 2023-2024 gifts from 1,799 individuals and organizations raised $650,114.

SJA owes a great debt of gratitude to the volunteer leadership of the four divisions that constitute the Annual Fund program: Parents, Alumnae, Friends & Grandparents and Faculty/Staff.
