There’s definitely no shortage of new restaurants cropping up all across North Idaho; from Coeur d’Alene to Post Falls, Hayden to Sandpoint, get out and explore the new flavors the area has to offer. Here is just a sampling of some of the new favorites that have opened during the past year. Taste for yourself what all the excitement is about.

RECENT OPENINGS DOWNTOWN The Wine Cellar Restaurant

The building at 317 Sherman Ave. has housed a number of businesses over the years, and now the Wine Cellar has moved in. Set in a location that appealed greatly to Tom and Patricia Power—owners of the landmark downtown restaurant and wine bar, The Wine Cellar, formerly located just two doors down—along with some other advantages the space held, they purchased the building earlier this year to relocate The Wine Cellar and move it street side. In the new location as of July 2012, The Wine Cellar Restaurant and Wine Bar boasts additional floor space with a larger area for groups, banquets and private dining. Along with the additional space comes a liquor license, so in addition to the impressive wine list, you can now enjoy classic hand mixed cocktails as well. And The Wine Cellar experience continues of course with their long standing tradition of great live blues and jazz. 317 Sherman Ave. 664-9463

The menu they serve comes through a service window from Scratch. Stop in for a taste of wine, art, shopping and conversation. 503 Sherman Ave. 664-1201

MID

TOWN Kelly's Irish Pub

It may not be new to the midtown street scene, but the owners are! Meg Sullivan and Ed O'Brien are the new owners of Kelly's Irish Pub. Along with the new owners comes a new and improved menu. It may be Irish, but Kelly’s features more than just corned beef platters. The kitchen now delivers an outstanding Guinness Stew, fantastic mussels in a Guinness cream sauce, the lightest beer-battered fish and chips anywhere around, excellent Shepherds Pie, and melt-in-your-mouth beignets and scones. Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese

Across from Fedora on Kathleen is where you will find the “big cheese”—Meltz Grilled Cheese. Joe McCarthy and Matt Yetter opened what is sure to become an area favorite. Few things say comfort food to Americans like grilled cheese sandwiches. At Meltz, they’ve kicked up the flavor a few notches with their own special spin on a classic. The extreme side comes from making it a meal within a sandwich with no fewer than six different components of starches and proteins between those grilled pieces of bread. Two favorites to try are the Border Patrol that is a combination of Pepper Jack and Colby Jack cheeses with jalapeño bacon, buttermilk-fried onions, roasted garlic and Ranch dressing. The Idahoan is white cheddar and Colby cheeses atop a bed of meatloaf, roasted garlic smashed red potatoes, and ketchup-chile glaze. This lunch spot is open from 11am to 4pm Monday through Saturday. In addition to the melted sandwiches you will find homemade soups daily along with their homemade chips. 1735 W. Kathleen Ave. 664-1717

Rogers Burgers

Famous for its great ice cream and burgers on Sherman Avenue, Rogers has now opened a drive-through burger location on Neider Avenue in North Coeur d’Alene. They offer delicious 100-percent fresh ground beef burgers, along with garden and turkey burgers, house-made French fries cut daily using locally grown Idaho potatoes, and ice cream shakes in more than a dozen flavors at their new location. 155 W. Neider Ave. 664-0696

Located on the corner of the same building complex that houses Fred Meyer, this is speedy family friendly Mexican dining. There are no microwave ovens, and everything is made fresh in small batches while you watch—you won't find anything made from frozen ingredients. It may take a bit longer, but it’s worth the wait, as Café Rio beats fast food drive through in quality, taste and price. Café Rio is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. 560 W. Lounge Fly

Demitri Kermelis opened Lounge Fly in Post Fall March 2012 in the former Pub 41 location. Demitri is from a family of chefs, restauranteurs and hoteliers. His Swedish great grandfather (on his mom's side) is famous in Sweden and Europe for two Swedish cookbooks and known in many restaurants by name. Demitri himself is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute located in the Soho area of New York. His marriage to his wife, a native of St. Maries, Idaho, area is what brought him to Idaho. Lounge Fly is in many ways a combination of the efforts of husband and wife. They both liked the comfy sofas and chairs found in so many of New York's establishments. Wanting to bring that feeling of being in an oversized family room to his place is what you get when entering. A well-stocked bar that offers a good variety of wines and beers is a big part of what works with the pool tables and multiple large screen TVs. They are now serving a variety of panini sandwiches each with its own flavor direction. Don't skip on their signature Parmesan Popcorn. 900 N. Highway 41 758-0603

Besides offering 15 various flavors of the frozen treat daily, you will find 65 different toppings to choose from for satisfying your need for a sweet but healthy treat. The Post falls location boasts Party Rooms with big screen TVs and fireplaces. Teens and kids love to write on the black bubble-like wall for messages to friends and family. Husband-and-wife team Chad and Meggie Foust opened the first Sweet Lou’s April 2011 in the Holiday Shores Marina in Hope, offering patrons wholesome home-style comfort food in big portions at an economical price. Earlier this year, they opened the second location—once again named after their son Lou—on Highway 95 in Ponderay. Unlike their Hope location, which is open seasonally, Sweet Lou’s Ponderay location is open seven days a week year round. The restaurant features all-American fare made with fresh ingredients with specialties including a crowd-favorite Chicken Fried Steak, Smoked Prime Rib, Bison Ribs and Grilled PB and J sandwiches; try it with bacon! For kids 10 and younger, there’s the For Lou’s Pals menu, featuring kid favorites: peanut butter and jelly, ribs, grilled cheese, mini cheeseburgers, mac and cheese, and more! There’s also a full bar with Happy Hour specials and multiple TVs to view your favorite game. 477272 Highway 95 263-1381

TONY’S ON THE LAKE

60 YEARS OF TONY's lakeside boat-up dining Tony’s on the Lake has a rich history of family. Built as Jeanette’s Club in 1939 (ask more about this history when you dine with them), it was purchased by Tony Canerio in 1952, re-named Tony’s Supper Club, later sold to Ozzie Singer, then to Kathy Thomas and Nella Troy, who sold it to the D’Alessandro family in 2004. With architect Rann Haight, the restaurant has been remodeled, a deck overlooking the lake has been added, and in 2010, new docks installed. The D’Alessandro family has a rich history of food. Ludvico D’Alessandro left Tuscany in 1908 with a love of Italian food that has been passed on through generations to great granddaughter Cheyenne, who attended culinary school in Florence, Italy, and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. She also had the opportunity to live extensively with family in Tuscany, experiencing the best of Italian family cooking. Tony’s on the Lake offers gorgeous lakeside dining in a wonderful retreat from the bustle of downtown. Take the beautiful five-minute drive from Downtown Coeur d’ Alene, or a great boat ride to their new docks. Look for their signature flashing arrow. Both casual and party dress are welcomed. The cuisine is Italian inspired, as is the warmth of their service, both reflecting family heritage. Tony’s on the Lake is located at 6823 Coeur d’Alene Lake Dr., a short drive or quick boat ride away from Downtown Coeur d’Alene. Just look for the blinking arrow! (208) 667-9885 TonysOnTheLake.com

“Our cuisine is your next big craving!”

I

n the heart of Downtown Coeur d’Alene, where Lakeside Avenue and Second Street meet, you can dine to the accompaniment of serenading songs, sunshine and a sweet martini, or a sizzling fire to illuminate your experience; you decide. Seasons of Coeur d’Alene, a popular martini bar and fresh grill in the neighborhood, has added a unique restaurant approach to the scene—one that caters to the customer’s ambiance preference and allows them to choose a dining setting appropriately. After all, at Seasons, the options are plenty. Scott Miller, executive chef at Seasons, says every component of the restaurant, from ambiance to cuisine, adheres to the distinctly different personalities one may wish to encounter in a dining experience; different “seasons,” if you will. Upon entering the establishment, you’re greeted by a cozy fireplace setting appropriate for a ski resort lodge. Add a Peppermint Schnapps Hot Cocoa refreshment to the mix and you’ll feel right at home! But, following a prompt greeting from the hostess, a right or left turn will easily land you in a setting fit for a whole new flavor. Turn left, and you’ll find a lively barroom. This room begs a classy but casual vibe, with a U-shaped bar, live music and unique garage door, opened wide to coax in the warm summer breeze. Wait. You’re looking for a more intimate experience? They have that, too. Turn right at the entrance, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by a romantic setting, white table cloths and full wine list included. “This is a cozy dining area that’s intimate, yet not stuffy or overdone," says Chef Scott.

Or, if your preferred dining experience doesn’t quite beg for sentimentality, you can make yourself at home just one room over. In a lounge-style setting, a fireplace and cushioned chairs will allow you to relax and unwind while snacking on your favorite appetizer, or entree alike! In all these uniquely contrasting dining options, Seasons has hardly neglected to include an ambiance that distinctively marks pristine Coeur d’Alene with a reputation of being indisputably well worth the visit to travelers both near and far. An outdoor patio awaits those looking to soak up some sunshine, breathe-in the refreshing lakeside air, and delight in the plentiful flavors that Seasons broad menu provides. And, as Chef Scott admits, Seasons does draw visitors both near and far. “We see a little bit of everyone; both a good core group of locals, as well as those willing to drive from Spokane, or beyond, because of the unique and delicious food we serve. Even in the winter, guests say the travel’s worth the meal!”

WE SEE A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYONE; BOTH A GOOD CORE GROUP OF LOCALS, AS WELL AS THOSE WILLING TO DRIVE FROM SPOKANE, OR BEYOND, BECAUSE OF THE UNIQUE AND DELICIOUS FOOD WE SERVE. EVEN IN THE WINTER, GUESTS SAY THE TRAVEL’S WORTH THE MEAL!

Seasons of Coeur d’Alene serves food that is faithfully local and wildly unique. Whether you’re looking to begin the experience with BalsamicDrizzled Steak Kabobs or Mexican-Style Shrimp Lollipops, you can rest assured the food is a true reflection of the Northwest’s fine and fun selections. “Our cuisine is going to be your next big craving,” Chef Scott says. Next big craving indeed. Scott Miller has 33 years of culinary experience, and his hard-earned knowledge is reflected in the vast array of exquisite dishes and original flavors. Combining tips and tools from his time in the industry in Tucson, San Diego, Portland, Seattle and Spokane, he has created a menu that thoughtfully blends true originality, fanciful flavors and genuine excitement. The Pulled Duck Enchiladas, for example, are a creation of rare breed; brilliant mix of duck, peppers, tomatillo gravy, black beans, signature pico and seasoning, all encased in corn-flour blend tortillas.

S

“For this dish, we use very clean duck meat,” Scott says. “Add Hispanic seasoning for the flare, and top it with signature tomatillo gravy. Now there’s a meal!” Scott is sure to add this unique culinary approach to breakfast items, too. “We’ve recently started serving brunch, and I must admit, I can’t even do a standard omelet. Between my own seasoned eggs and roasted tomatoes, the food always has an original spin.” Even if you’re more of a mainstream eater—classic grilled cheese, BLT’s or club sandwiches—you won’t be disappointed. The food’s always fun, friendly and could be with a delicious twist. “Ultimately, I hope people take away how friendly and approachable in both food and price point we are; it’s about great quality for the value. I think that’s been our experience; people think our style and cuisine are both classy and casual.” And, if you’re into great food, drink and a high-energy setting, Seasons has a live band for Ladies' Night every Wednesday, as well as Friday to kick off the weekend. “Wednesday, Friday and Saturday this place is hoppin’,” says Scott. “It’s another great vibe you don’t want to miss!” Finally. A place where the possibilities really are endless.

A Little Dash of Freshness

S

top. Don’t panic. You should know by now not to believe everything you hear, especially in any small town; The Wine Cellar is still here. It hasn’t closed, and won’t be closing. This Downtown Coeur d’Alene landmark is better and stronger than it’s ever been, and it’s here to stay—just two doors down—due to the love and passion of its new owners, Tom and Patricia Power and their Wine Cellar staff. The initial plan wasn’t to own their own restaurant—they were just looking for an investment. But “it was kind of a packaged deal,” says Tom, as the building and the business were for sale. In the beginning, the couple was a bit hesitant, as The Wine Cellar was already a well-known, well-liked—or should we say loved— establishment with a loyal clientele. Tom and Patricia knew this first hand, as they had been regulars to the iconic downtown restaurant for nearly 14 years. They have seen it grow, stumble and falter at times. They’ve enjoyed The Wine Cellar at its best and have questioned it during its struggles.

The Coeur d’Alene Marathon is run here every spring and the Race the River Triathlon every summer. The Kroc Center is safely and conveniently accessed via an underpass on the north side, under the busy highways, connecting Riverstone residents and visitors to an array of activities. Shops here are filled with an eclectic mix of stores and eating establishments that offer shoppers a quaint stroll and food options from cool treats for the kids to fine spirits for the older-much older-kids. CAPONE'S PUB & GRILL

“Cooking Rule ... If at first you don't succeed, order pizza.” ~ Anonymous

A Cornerstone of the Midtown Community Capone’s has been a local favorite pub and grill among area residents for more than 20 years now! Owners Tom and Teresa Capone opened their first location in Coeur d’Alene in 1991, and after experiencing many years of success, introduced Capone’s to Post Falls, a greatly needed addition to the community, in 2006. With more taps than most can dream of, and a menu to satisfy the most devoted food lover (think East-Coast comfort food with a Tom Capone twist: buffalo wings, sandwiches made with fresh house-made bread, burgers and—of course—some of the best pizza around!) an enjoyable culinary experience is a given. Classic baseball cards, concert tickets and fun memorabilia adorn the tabletops and bar, and the walls are lined with baseball gloves and antique sports gear, bringing a smile to kids young and old. Multiple flat-screen TVs offer almost all the games, pleasing the most devoted fans.

Tom and Teresa say they owe much of the success to their staff, who is at the forefront carrying out day-to-day tasks, with both the frontof-the-house staff and kitchen coming together and bringing their A-game to offer guests the best. Another reason that Capone’s has been successful is owed to their focus to quality. At Capone’s, they bake fresh bread daily, and all their pizza dough is made from scratch as well, ensuring a fresh top-quality product every time. No doubt about it, Capone’s is a cornerstone of the Midtown community and a place with something for everyone! Midtown Coeur d'Alene 751 N. Up the street you go to Kelly's Irish Pub for some of the best Irish food west of Ireland and yes, you will find Guinness stew here as well as the brew. Capone's Pub and Grill has put Coeur d’Alene on the world stage food map after their appearance on The Food Network’s Diners Drive Ins and Dives, and both Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls locations keep the fans coming back for more. They are forever winning our Fork-in-Cork Award with fans voting for Capone's as the “Best Pizza” in town and “Alive at Five! Best Happy Hour.” They are baking their own bread and hand tossing the pizzas for their one-of-a-kind flavors, and it makes the difference. Angelo's Ristorante serves-you guessed it-Italian cuisine. Patrons enjoy Angelo's diligent attention to preparing great Italian cuisine using organic, pure and locally grown ingredients as much as possible. Near here begins an eclectic mix of stores that greet you with flea-market finds and thrift stores to fine antiques; the unique is plentiful along this area of Fourth Street. A little further north in midtown brings you to the largest natural foods store in the entire region, Pilgrim's Market. The folks at Pilgrim’s are all over finding the best selection of fine organic, natural foods, local farm foods and a complete selection of supplements for shoppers who care to find those great tasting healthier choices. Syringa Japanese Café and Sushi Bar, and The Garnet Café, are across the street and are busy little cafés that offer flavors and service worth the stop in midtown. The Garnet serves the most unique breakfast menu even for lunches. Bistro on Spruce is a few blocks up, serving fine craft brews, a great wine selection, and an ever-evolving cuisine that keeps them a loyal following. They offer live music for romantic dinners and beautiful patio dining in the days of summer. The Breakfast Nook across the street offers that all-American breakfast and Thai Bamboo is near the intersection of I-90 and Fourth Street. One of the biggest commercial success stories in recent years is of a young man who figured out a way for each of us to connect with our friends online and grow our personal community. We all know about Facebook, and most North Idaho residents have heard of Pilgrim’s Market. Why? Because, like Facebook, they are connecting people. But, unlike Facebook, Pilgrim’s connects people face to face in the real world, with real food and health. Five years ago, Pilgrim’s Market owner, Joe Hamilton, became inspired by the book Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World, by Gary Hirshberg, CE-YO of Stonyfield Farm Yogurt. It was then that Joe decided to stop spending money on traditional advertising and direct that money into initiatives to educate, empower and connect his customers, staff and the greater health-conscious community in Coeur d’Alene.

Today, Pilgrim’s Health Education Center and demonstration kitchen are abuzz with seminars, cooking classes, film screenings and meetings. Many are coordinated by Pilgrim’s but others are hosted by a variety of local non-profits. Pilgrim’s has not only embedded itself into the fabric of the community, but it has also become a place where you can connect with and expand your personal community. Being greeted by name in the aisles of Pilgrim’s Market by friends and helpful staff is a regular part of this experience. Joe’s vision of connecting a healthier community through Pilgrim’s Market has inspired us to present this story in a design that reflects the most ubiquitous way we all connect today…and that, of course, is through Facebook! 46

SYRINGA JAPANESE CAFÉ & SUSHI BAR AND

THE GARNET CAFÉ

MIDTOWN FAVORITES Since opening, Syringa Japanese Café and Sushi Bar has developed a loyal clientele, due largely in part to their dedicated staff. Owners Viljo and Autumn Basso have been working in restaurants together since 1995. Viljo attended Portland's Western Culinary Institute, and after an internship at Rover’s-a well-known French cuisine-inspired restaurant in Seattle-he became a fulltime chef there. Autumn also worked in restaurants in the Seattle area and attended Seattle's Art Institute where she studied fashion design. While still in Seattle, Viljo added to his credentials at Cascadia Restaurant and Mashiko Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar. He was later asked to help open and be the head kitchen chef at Saito's Japanese Café and Sushi Bar, a traditional Japanese restaurant in Downtown Seattle. After eight years in Seattle, Viljo and Autumn married and returned to Coeur d'Alene. In 2004, Ezra "EZ~B" Basso was born, and they made the big decision to open Syringa, a Japanese café and sushi bar, naming it after the Idaho state flower. It quickly became a neighborhood hangout and awardwinning restaurant that attracted fans from throughout the Northwest. The opening of the Garnet Café would come in May 2010, occupying the small house behind Syringa with the inspired breakfast menu of a totally different sort. The unique menu includes creative breakfast items prepared with beans, pesto sauce, maple apple pecan sauce, fresh veggies, goat cheese, spaghetti, duck confit, pork fried steak, and omelets with Northwest area names and ingredients, along with expertly prepared traditional breakfast items. The Garnet also quickly garnered numerous local readers’ poll awards with their instant popularity and is a must destination among area foodies. Viljo and Autumn bring their own take and taste to the tables of both of these cafes and are sure to maintain their success with yet another quality Midtown restaurant.

G.W. HUNTERS RESTAURANT AND STEAKHOUSE Satisfying Diners with More than Just Food

As you enter G.W. Hunters, not only will you be greeted by a kind host or hostess, but a fish pond. Walk into the restaurant a bit further, and you’ll find more than 80 museum-quality trophy animals adorning the walls. You’ll notice scripture from the Bible posted throughout the restaurant as well, and several signs reading “Prayer may not be allowed in school, but it’s welcome at our table.” An interesting combination, but it shows owner David Swanson’s love of hunting … and God. G.W. Hunters offers great food with large portions at a fair price, and guests will find a menu smothered in comfort food items. All ingredients are always fresh, always flavorful, and the menu offers something for everybody. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options include wild and exotic game, steak, prime rib, burgers, seafood, chicken, pastas and an array of countrystyle breakfasts featuring elk and buffalo. They fresh-cut all the meat they serve daily (except for the T-bone, as they don’t have a band saw, according to Dave). Don’t expect anything less than fresh-ground elk, buffalo and beef patties for your burgers. And don’t be alarmed when quarter-inch slab bacon shows up on your breakfast plate. While dining, guests can’t miss the incredible wall mounts that adorn the walls throughout the restaurant that Dave has acquired over the years. Buffalo, moose, deer, antelope, birds … you will most certainly stay entertained during your meal. During the summer months, outdoor seating is available on the patio, where you can enjoy the fresh air and babbling fish pond. G.W. Hunters is that go-to family friendly restaurant with consistently high-quality, handcrafted food at an affordable price. It’s the place that diners flock to again and again. G.W.’s team has established a loyal following without question; it’s a local favorite sure to be around for years. 615 N. OVAL OFFICE

THE WHITE HOUSE SPINS THE OVAL OFFICE SCANDAL! Post Falls is home not only to The White House, but The Oval Office as well! This is owner Raci Erdem's chance to offer more Mediterranean flair with a touch more refined cuisine than his traditional White House fare. It's the foreigner's take on American contemporary foods with fresh inviting flavors of the Mediterranean, without quite so much garlic. With Raci's great success with his two flavorful and fun Post Falls restaurants, here Raci affectionately refers to its menu as his “fufu food.” The menu includes items such as an Olive and Feta appetizer, Curried Mussels, Thai-Coconut Seafood Soup, the Chef’s Plate of marinated lamb grilled and served with a creamy mint sauce, and expertly prepared steaks and salads. They're always busy shaking up their own creations of cocktails with such scandalous White House-affiliated names as: the Intern, Palin’s Panties, Cosmopolitician, Berry Bailout and the Dirty Monica. Opened since 2007, the Oval Office presents its guests with a small cozy environment and a beautiful flavor, making it another local favorite. 620 N. Spokane St. (208) 777-2102 WhiteHouseGrill.com

WHITE HOUSE GRILL

You love garlic,we love you! When the White House Grill first opened its doors in 1996, it was just a little white house right off I-90 in Post Falls. A small and intimate seven-table bistro, it served dishes with as much garlic as one can handle. And with owner/chef Raci Erdem at the helm, it instantly became a local restaurant gem. Raci was then and is still entertaining guests with a little conversation, a lot of joking and a little rhythm with a hand drum. He soon had people traveling from all over North Idaho and Spokane to this little white house in Post Falls, or as he would say, “to see the foreigner in the White House.” And once the secret was out, Raci enjoyed a packed house with a waiting line most days, eventually leading to moving the restaurant to a larger location, right down the street. A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Raci brought a tasty unique flavor to North Idaho with the gyros, the hummus, the grilled lamb, the crumbled feta—and yes, a lot of garlic. There’s plenty on the menu that offers many flavor sensations; there’s always something to please most any palate. At the White House, you will find servers offering fun, friendly service, and music that makes you want to get up and act foolish. You are bound to experience an entertaining and loud restaurant like no other in the area. What fun! During its 16 years serving Post Falls, it has grown to be a Northwest favorite that people talk about. Locals bring their out-of-town family and friends to show them a good time and what a restaurant should be. 712 N. Spokane St. ~ (208) 777-9672 ~ WhiteHouseGrill.com

Hayden and the Hayden Lake area are no exception to the growth in Kootenai County and are becoming more beautiful each passing day, with residents, both new and established, here for the rural smalltown feel. The culinary scene here is both gourmet and family friendly with vibrant restaurants and specialty shopping. Moose Creek is the new restaurant in Hayden Creek Shopping Center, where you will also find the specialty store Gourmet Way, a local specialty store. Just up the street on Government Way, you’ll find Hayden’s newly beautified main street and the charming dinner restaurant Kynrede Café, Mexican delights offered at Rancho Viejo, the long-established Sargent's and the new Copa restaurant. A bit further north on Miles Avenue sits a neighborhood favorite, The Porch Public House, next to the Hayden Lake Country Club. The world-famous Clark House is a stunningly beautiful mansion and restored elegant country inn overlooking Hayden Lake. This is the place to reserve for a truly special event. The Boathouse on Hayden Lake offers spectacular views to its dining experience. Additional eateries include Blue Plate Café, Rustler’s Roost, Rusty's and Toro Viejo. Specialty shopping includes Gourmet Way, offering one-of-a-kind kitchenware and gadgets, specialty foods and wines; and Daanen's Delicatessen with its wide array of imported foods, brews and wines. The corner of Prairie and Highway 95 is the home of the bustling Kootenai County Farmers’ Market. Hayden’s own destination for families with kids is Triple Play, with its water park, bowling lanes, go-karts, miniature golf, laser tag, bumper boats and other games. Hayden Lake hasn’t often been thought of as a happening place, but all that has changed with its revamped main street between Prairie and Hayden avenues on Government Way, which have brought a new sense of community to the neighborhood. Hayden city officials are more eagerly working with local businesses on events that will enhance their new sense of place in this growing area. Free summer concerts in the park run from July through August. Hayden is famous for its long-standing culinary event, Daanen’s Oktoberfest, held annually the last Saturday in September. This family friendly German food, music and carnival atmosphere really gets generations of entire families involved in the merriment, and the whole block gets involved with the fun; an event like no other in Kootenai County.

With a regular beer tasting night—Beer and BBQ—set to pair German cuisine with craft and imported beer offerings, Daanen’s brings a whole new gamut of flavors to the meals offered there. Daanen’s has been known and loved for traditional German food, brews and celebrations since 1992. The new flavor offerings are sure to delight the most seasoned of palates. The quality and freshness that comes from behind the Daanen’s counter cannot be matched in value or flavor by a vacuumed-packed or pre-sliced product. In addition to the traditional deli fare of turkey, pastrami and roast beef—and of course the freshest bread anywhere—you will find Italian dry-cured salami, authentic German bologna and Black Forest Ham. They even carry headcheese. The unique cheese selection includes Roquefort, Bleu, d’Auvergne, Leyden, and double and triple cream Brie cheeses. Along with offering a wide selection on their shelves and in their deli case, Daanen’s also serves lunches delistyle at the counter, changing to a full dinner menu after 5pm, with live music on Tuesdays and Thursdays. With their award-winning custom sandwiches, they have served more than three-quarter million! That’s 57 for each man, woman and child in Hayden. Combining a Love for Food and Community on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille

T

Story By: Dave Gunter | Photos By: Brett Fontana

he Long Bridge across Lake Pend Oreille—a two-mile crossing that surrounds the viewer with spectacular vistas on every side—has long been known as Sandpoint’s “welcome mat.” Those in the know, however, will continue onto First Avenue and take a quick jog down Bridge Street to land at City Beach, where the views are even more impressive. Sitting like the real-life center spread from a travel brochure, the glittering expanse of water is ringed by the towering Cabinet Mountains on one side and the craggy peaks of the Selkirk range on the other. Tucked amid all of this splendor, right on the lakeshore, is Trinity at City Beach. Since the spring of 2009, owner Justin Dick and his staff have been treating locals and visitors alike to culinary magic in an unmatched physical setting.

“One of the main things that sets us apart is the fact that we’re located at City Beach,” Justin says. “You couldn’t have a better spot. With the kids’ beach literally at our door, we get to watch Sandpoint’s families grow up right before our eyes.” Everything about Trinity at City Beach has been designed to complement this one-of-akind location, from the classic steamboat decor of the entryway, with its gallery of black-andwhite Ross Hall photographs, to the floor-toceiling windows that offer unencumbered views of the lake and mountains. When you want to take your love affair with Lake Pend Oreille outside, the restaurant’s ample deck seating and new lounge patio beckon from their spot near the water’s edge. Behind the scenes of this dining jewel, Executive Chef Thane Jenness and Sous Chef Andrew Mills—who grew up together in a quaint New Mexico resort town and attended the same culinary school—have teamed up

to create a menu that combines flavors of the Southwest with a distinctly Northwest style. “We put a lot of emphasis on things like incorporating local ingredients and using hand-cut steaks and seafood,” Justin says. “The majority of our menu items are made from scratch, and our pan sauces are made to order.” Among the favorite items on the Trinity at City Beach menu is the popular Root Burger, which is handcrafted from seven kinds of handshredded roots, walnuts and spices, all breaded and fried and served on a fresh toasted Kaiser roll, with jalapeño mayo, pickled red onions, spinach and Gouda cheese. Trinity’s Prime Rib has become almost legendary in Sandpoint, with seasoned, slowroasted Premium Choice, Midwest corn-fed Angus prime rib au jus served with horseradish cream, sautéed seasonal vegetables and potatoes du jour. On the other end of the dining spectrum is the Sandpoint Breakfast Sandwich—featuring

scrambled eggs on an English muffin with avocado, sprouts, Fontina cheese, sliced tomato and green onion remoulade. Before making the move to City Beach three years ago, Trinity had a successful run from a small location on First Avenue. Business grew rapidly, leading Justin to pursue broader business horizons on the lakeshore. He spent the first year rebranding Trinity at City Beach through the addition of live music and a decided focus on community involvement. “Our employees have really bought into that by spending a lot of time volunteering for local non-profits and organizations,” says Justin. “In one case, our server and bartender donated their tips to raise $1,300 for a cause called 24 Hours for Hank, which raises research money to help find cures for a rare childhood disease.” Trinity at City Beach is a major sponsor of the local Team Laughing Dog 24/7 bicycling team that will compete in the Race Across America to raise funds and awareness for organizations that support families living with autism. The restaurant also hosts an annual breakfast buffet fundraiser for the Wishing Star Foundation, a group that grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 21 in Eastern and Central Washington and Idaho who have life-threatening illnesses. Community involvement is carried a step further during the restaurant’s annual fundraising dinner for Kinderhaven—a local organization dedicated to supporting children in crisis and giving them back their right to thrive by providing a safe, secure home in which their emotional, physical and mental well being are protected and enriched. “Kinderhaven has special meaning to me, as I devoted my college career at the University of Colorado-Denver and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to early childhood and adolescent development,” Justin says. “During my college tenure, I worked at Denver Children's Home, which has a long-standing history of working with Colorado's most vulnerable children and families.” As a board member of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and graduate of its Leadership Sandpoint program, the owner has passed his passion for giving back to the community along to his employees. It’s not only the right thing to do, he explains, but also has a positive impact on the quality of food and service. “When our staff has skin in the game, it translates into their cooking and serving,” he says. “They understand that when we champion a cause or host a fundraiser, a big part of raising awareness for that group is directly connected with the experience the customer has while they’re here with us.” This combination of world-class atmosphere, top-drawer dining and a staff that consistently gives back to the community has resulted in fierce customer loyalty and a six-fold increase in business since the move to City Beach. “We’re known as the place where the locals go,” Justin says. “But we also have a strong reputation as a getaway destination for that perfect night on the lake or just a daytrip where you can come up, enjoy dinner in paradise and still have plenty of time to get home and back to work.”

See what’s new @ SizzlenCuisine.com

oeur d’Alene Cellars is North Idaho’s premier wine tasting experience, showcasing an impressive lineup of world-class wine, weekly live music, a beautiful picnic area and a swanky, romantic tasting bar. Coeur d’Alene Cellars Winery is celebrating its 10th year of winemaking. Each vintage brings in approximately 40 tons of grapes from the nearby Columbia Valley, and all winemaking activities happen right at the winery. The proximity to the vineyards, the attention to detail and the passion for great wine adds to the success. Kimber Gates, chief tasting officer, general manager and new mom, blends traditional winemaking techniques with a world-class tasting experience and offers an impressive array of wine-club benefits to her most admired fans. Warren Schutz, winemaker, has produced award-winning wines from every vintage and continues to come out with new and exciting blends. His relationship with the vineyards guarantees consistency and quality year after year. The winery wouldn’t be the same without family member and winery artist, Sarah Gates, whose art graces every wine label. Sarah specializes in watercolor and has an art for gardening, cooking and entertaining. View the winery Web site (CdACellars.com) for a full selection of winery recipes paired with Coeur d’Alene Cellars wines, all created by artist Sarah Gates. The winery family is easy to get to know. With one click, a customer can sign up for the wine club and is immediately invited to a winery luncheon with Kimber, Warren, Sarah and a selection of other winery members and wine specialists. “Getting to know everyone and sharing the winery experience is our passion, so every wine club member immediately becomes family,” says Kimber. Wine club members are invited to an annual garden party, filled with live music and tours of the gardens, bee hives and hen houses. The wine club also celebrates at the winery with Spring Barrel Tasting and Mother’s Day Celebration, a harvest party, a holiday barrel tasting, and a special Valentine’s Red Wine and Chocolate pairing. The winery family (wine club) receives deep discounts on special sales and also receives a consistent 20-percent discount on every purchase. To join the party, consider becoming part of the Coeur d’Alene Cellars’ wine club. Kimber and her family are celebrating their 10th year of winemaking by offering a tasting experience like no other. The winery’s tasting room, Barrel Room No. 6, is an upscale, swanky wine bar located inside the winery, featuring light fare, microbrews and local wine produced exclusively by Coeur d’Alene Cellars PHOTOS By: Brett fontana

Lindaman's

S

pokane’s South Hill encompasses several different pocket neighborhoods all with a unique flavor of their own; all of them coming alive with more culinary delights with each passing year. The restaurants in these neighborhoods are destinations full of life and a variety of flavors from around the world. The Lower South Hill, near all the medical centers and doctors offices, is peppered with restaurants on the steep hillsides behind them. Lindaman’s is celebrating 29 years this year of serving Spokane with delicious gourmet to go or in house for breakfast, lunch and dinner, DOMA coffees, Caffé Corretto and luscious desserts. A little further up the hill is one of the most beautiful attractions in Spokane—Manito Park. During summertime, they open a café, and nearby Rockwood Bakery, a charming neighborhood gem serving beautiful bakery items and lunches. Up the hill, just past 29th Avenue, is the most essential not-to-miss tiny Sichuan café, Gordy’s, just behind Slick Rock Burritos. Open for lunch and dinner, serving authentic Sichuan cuisine, they have won numerous local poll awards and have the distinction of being THE spot where area restaurateurs and professional chefs go out to eat when not eating at their own restaurants. Across the street are Vintages at 611 and the newly acclaimed Manito Tap House, which is serving up a huge selection of beers. The quaint nearby South Perry Business Story By: Jeanette Dunn

Sp ok ane's Sou th Hill District is filled with neighborhood variety of deliciousness and unique shops, and its own farmers market on Thursdays. The Lantern tavern, Perry Street Café, South Perry Pizza and the recently opened Casper Fry are among the choices while shopping at the beautiful Liberty Park Nursery, Veda Lux vintage shop, Title Nine and Lorien Natural Foods. Casper Fry is serving up a delicious Southern-inspired menu with a modern twist, featuring foods from the Northwest: trout, salmon, housesmoked meats, Walla Walla sweet onions, in-house breads and Red Mule Grits. Mid South Hill along 29th Avenue are: Hogans Diner and Forza coffee shop; Maggie’s Grill with her everyday lunch and dinner better-than-home-cookin’ when you don’t want to be home cookin’ and breakfast on weekends til the hollandaise runs out; The Two Seven Public House with the funky cool pub scene and their never-average food; and the ever-authentic and fresh flavors of Thai Cuisine. Upper South Hill from 44th to 57th avenues are a wide variety of offerings from Laguna Café, Waddell’s Pub, Twigs, Sushi I, The West Wing welcoming garlic lovers with its authentic Mediterranean fare; and Ferrante’s Marketplace Café, where the cuisine is distinctively Italian, the guests are treated like family and the little shop in front offers items you won’t find anywhere else. Up Regal to 57th brings you to Morty’s, Famous Eds, MacKenzie River Pizza Co., and Mezzo Pazzo Wine Bar, and Luna is west to 57th and Perry with their unique garden restaurant ambiance, creative

menu, top-shelf service and a wine list that is but a mere morsel of their exquisite cellar collection shared. So if you are one of those Coeur d’Alene foodies who is always asking me, saying; “I don’t know where to go out to eat in Spokane!” Here is your chance. Pick one or many,. Now you have a South Hill destination that is just what you’re looking for.
