Back to the future Autonomy of vertical city Work type: individual, academic Instructor: Ma Yueguang Complete time: Dec. 2017(Fifth year) Level of the project: Autumn semester, fourth year Email of instructor:1060364942@qq.com

The project aims to discuss how future architecture would form in a more and more dense urban context. My idea is inspired by the past- Kowloon walled city, which is no more exist. However, from the photos and historical data, we can find a prototype of autonomy architecture where space is defined by the vintervention of users. So that I assume the future form would come from the past but improve to higher quality of space.

POPULATION DENSITY DISTRIBUTION

URBANIZATION Urbanization is a universal tendency. While the over-urbanization is accompanied by high-density and low-quality urban environments. Here shows six fabric from the most dense city. And most of them located in developing countries. CONS The high density is the major consequence for negative implications arise in relation to the same urban components, identified by the congestion of urban landscapes, reduction of urban green areas and the occurrence of heat islands, deterioration of urban networks and traffic infrastructure by overloading, and not least an increase of psychological stress for the inhabitants.

Kowloon Walled City was a historic largely ungoverned, densely populated settlement in Hongkong, where residents illegally expande housing into a vertical giant “termites nest”. Al thought it had many problem, it certainlly was a representative work of autonomy of architecture, which contains continuous evolution, self-reproduction and self-regeneration. My project aim to design a vertical spontaneous city “matrix” in the original Kowloon walled site that can provide high quality of urban function and regenerates by the intervention of users.

ASSUMPTION The key to sustainable future high-density architectures lies in generating built environments capable of adapting to changes. The models will be flexible, renewable, adaptable and capable of transformation and self-redefinition in relation to context changes. And it should be a universal formula that can be adapted in all dense cities.

There are infinit possibilities of this forming matrix. But only part of them can form space in high feasibility and high quality. Here we list several typical types of possible building shape. The buildings in same raw hold same aount of units. And a decreasing trend of units is showed from left to right in the same line. It shows that when decresing the units, the matrix shows a higher plasticity in outer space. By comparing all these solutions can we find the most feasible one.

CONTENT The dormitory in Turin can't fulfill the growing number of students in the current situation. So this proposal here chose a place near two major universities. Since a dormitory is aimed to both deal with the short supply of bed and also fulfill students' daily demand, the project is formed from analytical study of optimal orient and location of dormitory. Then I modified the outer shape in order to call up vitality and be a fancy.

SHADOW ANALYSIS (ALL YEAR)

MICROCLIMATE MATRIX FOR OPTIMAL SITUATION(FROM SOLAR AND WIND CALCULUS) 17-0 representing to which extend this plot is suitable for this type of activity

BIULDING Compared with other matrix, the left ‘L’ shape corner is only good for building but not for activities. So this area is selected.

STRATEGY

PLAYGROUND Playground activity needs medium metabolic rate. And sunshine is more important than wind in this case.

RESTING Resting activity needs low metabolic rate. And sunshine is more important than wind in this case.

RUNNING Running activity needs high metabolic rate. And wind is much more important than sunshine in this case.

JOGGING Jogging activity needs medium metabolic rate. And wind is more important than sunshine in this case.

SPORTS

The area appropriate for sport is very large. The new building will create a new influenced area for activities of Low metabolic rate.

Make this end less compact to have better ventilation

This area is influenced by the new building, so the solar and ventilation conditions change. It’s needed to do again the microclimate matrix for external activies in the present situation.

BAR

The dark green area is used for construction area. The students’ room are raised up to get better solar and ventilation conditions.

A FANCY INTERVENTION

Set back the meeting room 2.5m on the ground floor to have appropriate solar factor and shading

I balance the external activities and construction, and leave the better area for external activities. While the dark red area is acceptable for building.

Put the library on a site with more natural light

Enlarge the distance between the main and attached buildings

BAR Bar activity needs low metabolic rate. And wind is more important than sunshine in this case.

Keep the boundary area for bar to attracte more people, while the resting area is left inside to be quiter.

A outer shell is applied from facade to roof. This changes the rigid facade to fluid one.And it also provides shading function for bedrooms

Design strategy

An empty space is very useful as playground and a space to hold any kind of activity.

SPORTS

Two setback is defined for the dense context. A set back is used as green area and another as parking.

Three main entrance is defined by streets orientation. And three main axis is designed to form the connection net.

A jogging path and pattern of plaza is used to highlight the boundary instead of using wall or fence, making the space more open.

The building is strictly located in where the best nature condition is (sun and air flow). And L shape is best shape to fit in.

A flow from elevation into roof is designed to make the building more fluid and conherence. This shell is also good for providing shading.

Since it’s important to keep healthy, several courts are settled in this corner. BEST AREA FOR THE ACTIVITY WORST AREA FOR THE ACTIVITY FINAL SELECTION AREA

SECTION A-A' The dormitory contains a broad internal courtyard where students can sit, do exercises or study. These two sections show a variety of student activities, from private inhabitation to public social spaces, are arranged in the space based on their privacy.

Castello Valentino is a French Baroque castle which is designed for Savoy family. The earliest history can be traced back to 1564. Now that the castle is used both as a museum and a university for architecture students. This is a renovation project that bases on the existing situation. The renovation project is divided into two directions: construction of new building and interior renovation. Since this project is located in a UNESCO heritage castle, it's mandatory to preserve all the elements that are from 16 century. But it's feasible to modify non-load-bearing wall which is constructed after 18 century(however the structure system should be preserved).

Because the project locates near Guandi temple, we use the slop roof to keep the conherence of skyline. And the roof is shped by interior function.

Accordin.g to the sun orientation, a ball “lighting well” is set on the top of hall, in order to gather more nature light.

The design of façade is inspired by the curtain. The swinging corner wall implies the functions of the theater.

A shutter grille network is applied around the glass fasade, which uses the local timber material. And the gray tile roof is also the other representative element of local culture.

Select thickness of shutter, the finest is the lightest

In order to realize this conplex roof , a structure system must be defined to fulfill basic model shape. As shows below, the structure ststem made by four layers: roof tile, iron bar net, timber supporting system and the load bearing column. By assumption we found the possibility to realize the concept.

Boluobei Railway Station Railway Station design

Work type: individual, professional project location: Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China Complete time: Oct. 2018 Area: 8000 sqm

Boluo North Station is an important transportation hub in Huizhou City. The project lasted 4 years (under construction till 2020) from survey to construction. During my internship, I was responsible for modifying the facade design and CAD floor plan based on customer feedback. And I am in charge of 3d modelling.

Shanghai Northern Station

Light Rail Station Design

Work type: individual, professional project location: Taizhou, Zhejiang province, China Complete time: Sep. 2016 Area: 4000 sqm I was responsible for shape design for two light rail station on viaduct. The first one sits on the side of road while the second one locates on the middle of avenue. So they have two different strategy and CAD plans.

Adaptive Tensegrity

a real-time moving structure that reconfigure all the time Work type: group, academic Tutor: Tyson Hosmer, David Reeves, Octavian Gheorghiu Group Member: Siyu Chi, Jiachen Lei, Meng-Yi Lin, Shiyu Kan Complete time: Sep. 2019 Level of the project: Master project

The future is unpredictable, the building nowadays could only responds to or integrates with the current situation. Once the condition changes, Most buildings cannot adapt to it and meet the end with deconstruction. The traditional building life cycle consists of five phases: planning and design, construction, operation, renovation and demolition. Since the demolition is regarded as a way to end non-proper architecture. Then here raise a question: IS IT POSSIBLE THAT ARCHITECTURE COULD PREPARE THE UNPREDICTABLE FUTURE ? Therefore, how to extend the life cycle and reduce the number of demolition and reconstruction also have considerable effects. The starting point of Adaptive Tensegrity is to rethink whether the traditional linear building life cycle could be changed through innovating structures, materials and design, and explore the possibilities of nonstop building life cycle which buildings are no longer difficult to change, but adapt autonomously with the change of environment, user requirements, etc. to achieve sustainability and conduct changing multiple conditions at the same time.

Introduction of Machine Learning

Action

State & Reward

Environment

Agent

Output Selected Best Action

Reinforcement Learning An agent takes actions in an environment, which is interpreted into a reward and a representation of the state, which are fed back into the agent. And by repeating this process, the output performance would be better and better (till maximum). Reinforcement learning let the agent take suitable action to maximize reward in a particular situation, endowing the tensegrity structure with autonomy.

Multi-Agent Cooperation Cooperative agents share sensation, episodes and learning policies. This sharing speeds up learning at the cost of communication. Compare with independent agents, cooperative agents can signicantly perform efficiently although they may learn slowly in the beginning .
