Delivering the best that the market can offer Dear reader, At the International Bulk Journal (IBJ) awards in November this year Siwertell again proved its excellence in the ship unloading/loading sector by winning its fifth IBJ award. Together with Peel Ports, we took the prize for the Best Ship Loading/Unloading System; an accolade we have won three times before and once in the environmental protection category. Read more about this event on page 26. This year we have taken an important step into a new market with successful, full-scale tests unloading coking coal at the Ha Tinh Steel plant in Vietnam; the results are very good. I see this as the final ‘door opener’ into the important steel industry in the future. Read more about it on page 4. Elsewhere in this edition of Siwertell News, you will find a case study from Jordan Phosphates, explaining the company’s reasons behind the order and why it opted for a Siwertell screw-type unloader. We are in the final stages of this delivery (page 12). Other areas covered in this magazine relate to alumina, grain and fertiliser handling; all of them are important materials that are very suitable for being handled by Siwertell’s product range. The importance of service is highlighted on page 24, looking at Fremantle Port’s ship unloader. People generally understand the need to have their cars serviced; similar, regular servicing is vital for their Siwertell machines. Page 16 reveals our 10 top tips for keeping your Siwertell machines in the best working order. We are sure that you as an operator or owner have other tips that could be shared with our readers. debuts dedicated Siwertell coal unloaders

Siwertell’s breakthrough contract from the steel industry is now complete and initial test results have revealed excellent energy consumption and rated capacity; operators around the world are watching to see the level of benefits that dedicated coal intakes offer


t the end of 2012, Siwertell secured a breakthrough contract for two large coal unloaders from Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPC), part of the Taiwanese conglomerate, Formosa Plastics Group. At the time, the unloaders were the largest that Siwertell offered. The order sparked great interest in the steel industry from operators intrigued to see just how much money could be saved by using Siwertell machines for the dedicated unloading of coking coal. The ST 940-DOB unloaders have been supplied on a turn-key basis. They have the capacity to discharge vessels up to 205,000 dwt and handle coal at a maximum rated capacity of 2,400t/h, giving a combined capacity of 4,800t/h. The unloaders are rail-mounted with a scope of 350m. They serve Formosa Plastics Group’s newly-built Ha Tinh steel plant in Vietnam’s Son Duong Port; part of major industrial developments in the area, expected to continue through to 2020.

7.8 million tonnes a year The new facility will have six blast furnaces, making it one of the largest steel plants in the world. There will also be a 32-berth seaport and a 2,150 MW coal-fired generating plant. In addition to their primary function handling the steel plant’s coking coal demands, the Siwertell unloaders will also be used to discharge thermal coal for the power station. According to FPC, the complex will have an annual intake of coal estimated to be about 7.8 million tonnes. FPC’s unloaders are totally enclosed all the way from the inlet device, which transfers coal from below the cargo surface in the vessels’ holds, to the three transfer points on the owner’s jetty conveyors. The Ha Tinh steel plant’s jetty has six conveyors, three to handle coal and three for iron ore. “Our installation is now finished and both unloaders are fully operational,” says Per Hansson, Contract Manager, Siwertell. “We have recently conducted two out of three performance tests on the unloaders. The first two tests were

designed to look at energy consumption and the rated capacity of the unloaders. Both tests had excellent results. The third performance test, looking at through-ship performance, will be carried out later this year.” Siwertell provided a comprehensive training programme to the operator to ensure that it reaps maximum benefits from its new system.

Coking coal challenges “Steel production specifically requires coking coal as an essential element in its production. However, this type of coal has significantly varying levels of moisture, fines and calorific values. It is therefore important to test the unloaders’ ability to handle the full range of cargoes that may be encountered.” High water content, in combination with clay contained in a coal cargo, makes it difficult to handle, because it is prone to stick and create build-ups of material at transfer points and chutes.



Delivering on promises

“We considered such issues during the design phase of this equipment and used computer modeling to iron-out the problems. As always, component materials were chosen with great care,” notes Mr Hansson. “Overall, this approach has proven invaluable and we are very satisfied with the result. Our machines can handle coking coal excellently and the feedback from the customer has been positive.”

“Securing this contract was extremely important to Siwertell, enabling it to demonstrate to the steel industry the advantages of handling coal with our unloaders. It is even more important to ensure that we deliver on the promises initially made during the bidding process.”

“We have started discussions with other steel plants as a result of this clear demonstration of our ability to unload coking coal,” he says.

Siwertell’s contract with FPC guaranteed a throughvessel capacity equal to 70 percent of the rated capacity, meaning a discharge rate of 1,680t/h per unloader, or 3,360t/h for both. On average it will take about 60 hours to unload a 200,000 dwt Capesize vessel. “The tests undertaken

Built-in redundancy and safety FPC’s two unloaders have several redundant system integrations and safety factors. The travelling machinery is designed to function with a loss of power, for example, if one or several drives should fail. This is also the case for the slewing machinery, which can be manoeuvred even with a unit loss.

If the unloaders’ power supply fails during unloading operations, Siwertell has equipped the machines with an emergency operation system that allows the operator to manoeuvre the machine out of the vessel and safely park it. This system is integrated into both the electrical and hydraulic systems.

Robust maintenance regimes prolong service life The Siwertell equipment delivered for this particular project is equipped with the most durable and sturdy conveyor technology, delivering a long lifetime as well as optimised maintenance requirements. “As long as our regular maintenance recommendations are followed, wear parts maintenance should only be required every second year. Wear parts include components such as the outer diameter (OD) bearing flights, covers, lower transport tube, wear screws and bottom bearings,” explains Per Hansson, Contract Manager, Siwertell. 6


“These components are typical wearing parts that need to be replaced after a certain number of running hours. Naturally, the lifetime of wear components is related to the way the equipment is used and the standard of maintenance. With skilled personnel operating the unloaders and a good maintenance regime, the lifetime of components can be extended. The vertical conveyors will easily last four-to-five years at the plant’s planned operational pace. If maintenance is carried out properly, they will last even longer.”

In addition, the Siwertell unloaders are equipped with a number of sensors indicating the operational health of the equipment. “A well-maintained unloader is safer and maintains its operational efficiency. It also strengthens customer satisfaction throughout the equipment’s lifetime,” he adds.

so far demonstrate that this is fully achievable,” notes Mr Hansson. Large steel plants have traditionally used the same unloading equipment for the iron ore and coal used in the steel production process. The two main methods for unloading iron ore and coal are grab cranes or bucket chain unloaders. If a grab unloader with the same capacity, but with an efficiency factor of only 55 percent were to be used, it would take about 75 hours to unload a similar vessel. The main reason for Siwertell’s higher overall efficiency compared with grab cranes is that at the beginning of an unloading operation, the grab only travels a very short distance to reach the cargo. However, as more bulk material is unloaded, the greater the distance the grab has to travel, into and out off the hold. Therefore the efficiency progressively decreases. Performance drops off even more dramatically when the level of cargo in the hold falls to a point where the

grab cannot completely fill itself. In contrast, a screw type unloader maintains a steady discharge rate, regardless of the level of cargo in the hold, right up to the hold clean up stage. At the time of the contract Siwertell estimated that its unloaders could deliver cost savings in the region of US$2.5 to US$3 million per year for this particular operator, in comparison to traditional systems, because ships will spend much less time at the unloading berth. “Until FPC placed the contract with Siwertell the industry had been reluctant to invest in separate intake systems for coal and iron ore; however savings on this scale proved difficult for to ignore, so we will be watching this operation with keen interest. And we are not the only ones. Other operators are also keeping a watchful eye on the success of this facility to assess the level of benefits dedicated intake systems could offer their new steel plants; or even their existing ones.”



Alumina handling


The aluminium industry could save up to US$500 million annually simply by abandoning its conservative approach to discharge systems and making the change to Siwertell unloaders; Juha Huovilainen, Siwertell Sales Director, explains how


he global trade in aluminium oxide is large and important. Generally known as alumina, about 120 million tonnes of this extremely valuable commodity was produced in 2015, according to the International Aluminium Institute. While a proportion of the production is consumed in industrial processes, the greater part is used for making aluminium. Siwertell loaders are wellestablished in the alumina trade, but the industry has been slower to take advantage of our unloaders. Most operators still employ sub-optimal 8


arrangements; predominantly grab cranes and pneumatic systems. This is surprising, because we estimate that if the aluminium industry made the move from these traditional systems to Siwertell unloaders, it would benefit from annual savings of over US$500 million. People can naturally be sceptical at the suggestion that simply optimising one element of a complex industrial chain can have such massive economic benefits. However, we are confident that our figures and projections are correct. The savings are delivered in a number

of different ways, related to the nature, value and processing requirements of alumina. But in all instances, it is the performance of the Siwertell unloader – when compared to the alternatives – that delivers the results.

Eliminating spillage Alumina is too valuable to waste through unnecessary spillage. We estimate that eliminating spillage right across the industry would result in savings of up to US$150 million per annum. A customer reports that alumina discharging tests with Siwertell road mobile unloaders showed no loss of bulk

material whatsoever; while using a grab crane results in the loss of one and a half percent of the alumina cargo during the discharging process. This is obviously a serious loss of commodity. If we consider a typical operation with an annual intake of half a million tonnes of alumina priced at US$400/ tonne; the annual value of cargo arriving at the discharge berth is US$200 million. So based on the losses associated with a grab crane, the annual saving using a Siwertell unloader is a massive US$3 million. Further savings are made because there is a negligible amount of cleaning when using a Siwertell unloader

and working conditions are greatly improved.

Reduced smelting costs Pneumatic systems are also widely used for alumina unloading. They do not incur spillage on the scale of grab cranes, but unfortunately they impact negatively on their owners’ business in other ways. They have very high energy demands and are far less efficient than Siwertell unloaders. More importantly, pneumatic systems do not handle the alumina very gently; this results in high levels of alumina degradation and the production of fines (powdery material) which has a serious impact on the smelting process.

Aluminium smelting requires enormous amounts of energy and is very sensitive to the percentage of fines in the alumina; the lower the percentage of fines, the less energy required for the smelting process. We estimate that minimising cargo degradation by using our screw-type unloaders could save the global industry up to US$400 million every year. In fact efficient, gentle unloading can make the difference between success and failure in marginal cases; a number of smelters have closed because high energy consumption made their operations unviable. Aluminium: valuable, versatile and endlessly recyclable Although aluminium smelting is an energy hungry process, the resulting light metal has important qualities of strength, conductivity, flexibility and resistance to corrosion that lend it to uses ranging from food packaging to aircraft construction.

Unlike many metals and other materials, aluminium can be recycled indefinitely without suffering any reduction in quality.

This is an excellent quality in a world increasingly concerned with sustainability, because in addition to conserving resources, recycling aluminium requires only five percent of the energy needed for primary aluminium production. It is estimated that about 75 percent of the world’s historic aluminium production is still in use. Each time a unit of aluminium is melted and reused, the more energy efficient it becomes, mitigating the high energy demands and inevitable degree of pollution associated with primary production.

While some aluminium products such as cans have a very short existence, many others have an extremely long life. Aircraft, cars and buildings lock up their significant aluminium content for years or even decades. Consequently recycled aluminium can only supply a proportion of the current demand. However, as the global stock of aluminium steadily increases, and scrap recovery techniques and systems improve, the balance between primary production and recycling will move in favour of recycled product, to everyone’s benefit. 10


Building on initial success Siwertell gained valuable experience from its first alumina unloader installation for Eastern European customer, Aluminij Mostar. It built on this solid foundation and today, as a result of steady developments and improvements, Siwertell unloaders are perfectly specified for alumina handling. For alumina importers with a high throughput, Siwertell offers a range of unloaders with rated capacities of up to 2,000t/h. These can be supplied as fixed installations or they can run on rails. Some models can be equipped with rubber tyres to allow self-propelled operations without the need for rails. For smaller scale operations our road-mobile unloaders offer an excellent solution; they are ideal for operators discharging alumina at multiple locations.

Unbeatable environmental protection Alumina is extremely hygroscopic, seeking to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Siwertell’s totally-enclosed unloaders ensure that the alumina remains as dry as possible. With zero spillage and virtually no dust creation they offer unbeatable environmental performance. Aside from the economic advantages of receiving 100 percent of the shipped cargo, clean operations are vital for importers with facilities close to centres of population and commerce who are finding it difficult to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Decades of reliable alumina loading Siwertell is well established as a supplier of alumina loaders, delivering reliable service for alumina exporters for decades. The highest capacity Siwertell alumina loader so far is a Siwertell HST-1800 with a rated capacity of 2,500t/h that has been in operation for Hydro Alunorte in Brazil since 2008. Siwertell loaders are especially well-suited to the demands of handling alumina. They make use of aeroslides and Cleveland cascade-type vertical telescopic loading spouts that handle the material very gently, resulting in minimal cargo degradation. Dust collectors are fitted at all transfer points to reduce dust emissions to an absolute minimum, allowing exceptionally clean, high capacity loading. Operators have great confidence in Siwertell’s remote monitoring and fault-finding capabilities and the support available from its global service network.

Excellent customer experience Siwertell customer Aluminij Mostar, based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, found that alumina discharged with a pneumatic unloader has a fines content with a particle size of less than 45µm of up to five percent. The company had ten years experience of using a 5 000 S, road-mobile Siwertell

unloader – equipped with a double-loading bellows system and radio remote control – for discharging alumina at the Port of Ploče in Croatia. During that time the alumina had an average fines value of between 0.2 and 0.3 percent. The reduced amount of fines had a hugely beneficial impact to the plant’s energy consumption. A major factor in Aluminij Mostar’s initial decision to purchase a Siwertell system was its desire for a clean, environmentallyfriendly operation. In addition to the clean operation and the small percentage of fines, the company found that it had made a very sound decision in terms of

performance, efficiency and reliability. Commenting on its unloader in 2001, it said that the machine was operating to its complete satisfaction, handling over 100,000 tonnes of alumina per annum, and exceeding its specified unloading rate by 30 percent. The company described it as: “environmentally superior and very efficient”. Operations at Ploče ceased in 2006. By that time the unloader had logged 10,550 hours, discharging over 1,250,000 tonnes of alumina, at an overall through-ship rate of nearly 120t/h.

e often talk about a longterm commitment to our customers and their products; this normally focuses on design, construction, delivery and commissioning followed by throughlife support. Siwertell’s project in the Jordanian Port of Aqaba is about a different type of commitment; it is the story of ten years of talks, discussions, negotiations and setbacks. During this difficult and sometimes frustrating period, we have never wavered in our support for our customer and in our confidence in an eventual successful outcome. As a result, we will shortly complete the delivery of a comprehensive dry bulk handling package to the port.



Catastrophic failure drives tender process In 2006, following the catastrophic breakdown of a bucket unloader in Aqaba, the port authorities invited Siwertell to tender for a replacement ship unloader. The approach was made via Khaled Zalloum, Managing Director of Trust Industrial Supplies & Services, Siwertell’s exclusive representative in Jordan. Ten years on from this initial contact, the project is now close to completion with Siwertell supplying a state-of-the-art, rail-mounted ST 640-M ship unloader.

Keeping in contact Behind these facts lies the tale of an unusually challenging tendering process with setbacks including the global economic crisis, the Arab Spring and the

Jordanian Government’s introduction of anti-corruption measures. Where others might have walked away, we kept in regular contact, keeping ourselves up-to-date with the changing local situation. We also informed the customer about our R&D advances and changes in performance and specification as the years passed. In short, we worked with the customer and its representatives to keep the tendering process alive, up-to-date and relevant. This ensured that whenever the right circumstances presented themselves, all parties would be well-prepared to push ahead with the project. This long-term commitment is now bearing fruit, bringing credit to all concerned for their patience and perseverance through difficult and challenging times.

itself was extremely comprehensive, containing approximately 1,500 pages of specifications. On top of this each of the joint venture companies had its own specific requirements. Some of these were feasible, while others would have been impossible to deliver.

Refurbished and expanded jetty The pace of development eventually picked up in 2014 when a final set of companies was selected to bid for the process. Siwertell submitted identical tendering bids to the four final competing companies. Interested parties were shown footage of a similar Siwertell sulphur unloading system in action in Fremantle, Australia. Later in the year, Jordan Industrial Ports Co (JIPC) contracted its Aqaba development to a Spanish joint venture company comprising Técnicas Reunidas and PHB. In 2015 this joint

venture company awarded Siwertell a contract as part of an agreement with Jordan Industrial Ports Co. Plc (JIPC) to refurbish, develop, upgrade, and expand the port’s existing jetty. In contrast to the lengthy process that lead up to the contract, Siwertell was given a 12-month delivery timeframe. Acceptance of the short delivery time, Siwertell’s proven technology and the Spanish joint venture company’s very competitive offering were crucial to sealing the deal. Overall, this was a complicated tendering process. The base tender

The great efforts made by Mr Zalloum and his company and Siwertell itself to promote the benefits of Siwertell technology were important in winning this contract. We maintained contact and followed-up on progress over the years, never losing interest, which was especially important during the quiet periods. This created a very strong relationship with the customer.

Delivery underway Siwertell first delivered all the unloader’s component parts to a site in Gijon in northern Spain where the joint venture company carried out assembly work. The machine has now been delivered as a complete unit to Jordan. The contract includes provision of a comprehensive spare parts package and Siwertell will provide on-site operator training. Installation, testing and commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2017. SIWERTELL NEWS

Jordan and the importance of Aqaba The Hashemite kingdom of Jordan is located in western Asia. It has a population close to 10 million people and covers an area of 89,341km². Jordan’s main natural resources are potash and phosphates. It is land-locked except for 26km of Red Sea coastline in the extreme south-west, where its only port, the Port of Aqaba, is located. Aqaba has been an important port for thousands of years due to its strategic location between the continents of Asia and Africa.

Safety precautions for handing sulphur The unloader will be used mainly to discharge sulphur. Therefore it is equipped with Siwertell’s 4S sulphur safety measures. Sulphur is flammable and explosive, particularly when enclosed, making it an extremely hazardous cargo. Siwertell spent years of R&D work developing a solution that allows sulphur to be handled with its fully-enclosed conveyors. The result of this work was the Siwertell Sulphur Safety System, or simply 4S. 4S is a two-stage system that works first and foremost on a preventative basis, seeking to eliminate the risk of explosions or fires by monitoring and removing ignition conditions. Its second-stage functions are containment and

extinguishing. In the unlikely event of an explosion, pressure is vented into the atmosphere in a safe, controlled manner, which is harmless to the operator or machine. If a fire occurs, an automatic fire extinguishing system is activated; this is coupled with a shut-down sequence for the unloader to prevent burning sulphur spreading into the downstream conveying system. 4S is an internationally-recognised award-winning safety system that allows the safe handling of sulphur in an environmentally-acceptable way, free from dust and spillage.

Environmental considerations Environmental performance was an important factor in Siwertell securing the contract. Aqaba is located in the Red Sea,

which is known for its unpolluted waters, coral reefs and beaches. It is important to keep pollution from any industrial area to an absolute minimum, but in this sensitive marine area the requirement for the dry bulk handling system was zero emissions. The Siwertell ship unloader has a totally-enclosed conveyor system that starts at the ship’s hold with a material intake below the cargo level and continues to the discharge point at the receiving belt conveyor. It is probably the only technology that offers dust and spillagefree cargo handling. Siwertell technology is often the preferred solution when environmental protection conditions are tough and zero emissions are requested.

Jordan Industrial Ports Co (JIPC): a brief overview Jordan Industrial Ports Co (JIPC) was established May 2009 and is jointly owned by Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) and Arab Potash Co (APC). JIPC was set up following a memorandum of understanding signed in 2008 by APC and JPMC with the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) to refurbish, develop, upgrade, and expand the port’s existing jetty. Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, founded in 1949, specialises in the exploration, mining and marketing of phosphates and fertilisers. In addition to its national operations, the company operates in Asia, Australia, Europe and Africa and is headquartered in Amman, Jordan. Jordan Phosphate Mines Company extracts phosphate rocks from the Al-Hassa, Al-Abiad and Shidiya Mines. Its products include phosphate, diammonium phosphate, sulphuric acid, and aluminium fluoride. The Arab Potash Company, established in 1956, is primarily involved in harvesting minerals from the Dead Sea. It is the world’s eighth largest potash producer and the sole Arab producer of potash. It is headquartered in Amman and its main plants are located in Ghor Al Safi.

Effective service strategies, good operator training and timely replacement of wear parts are needed to maintain high performance and extend the service life of your Siwertell equipment. Here are Siwertell Field Services’ ten top tips to help you get the very best from your Siwertell unloader in terms of performance, safety and longevity.

1. Unload upright as much as possible The vertical conveyor can be operated at an angle to reach into corners and under hatch coamings. However, working at an angle to the vertical might increase conveyor component wear rates. As far as possible, the operator should unload with the vertical arm/conveyor in the vertical position; set at zero degrees on the remote control.

2. Share the load To maintain good discharging capacity, it is important to work in conjunction with the excavator/ pay loader and move material as early as possible when the level of cargo in the hold is low. Good cooperation between pay loader and unloader operators gives maximum efficiency and maintains a high discharge rate for as long as possible.

3. Watch out for your surroundings Do not operate or move the ship unloader or the loader arm system in such a way that it can hit any ship structures. We recommend guidance from additional personnel to give a good view of the equipment and its surroundings during unloading work near ship structures. 16


4. Avoiding damage to the inlet feeder The operator should avoid damage to the inlet feeder wings when unloading; the wings can become bent if the feeder head hits the bottom of the hold. The inlet feeder wings should be adjusted back to their normal position if they become damaged to maintain the normal capacity. This is another good reason to keep the vertical conveyor in the vertical position during unloading work.

5. Take care of your safety equipment Safety equipment installed on the ship unloader should be serviced regularly according to the maintenance manual.

6. Intermediate bearing checks Regularly check the condition of intermediate bearings including the outer diameter (OD) supports. Make sure that play in the OD-supports is within limits; excessive play can result in increased wear in the vertical conveyor and must be rectified as soon as possible.

7. Keep the unloader well-lubricated Siwertell shipunloaders are equipped with centralised greasing systems. Check regularly to ensure that there are no blockages and that grease is entering and emerging from every greasing point. Keep the shipunloader clean and ready to use.

8. Report any unusual noise Always report abnormal vibrations or noise. Early attention will avoid excessive wear and remove the risk of serious damage.

9. Keep your spares to hand Follow Siwertell’s spare parts recommendations. This will help you to always have strategic and critical wear parts at hand to minimise unloading downtime.

10. Check your spare parts stock Keep your stock of spare parts up to date; contact the Siwertell service department to replace any spare parts you have taken from your stock.

with 40 years of satisfied customers Siwertell unloaders are making inroads in the bulk fertiliser trade; Sales Manager Bertil Andersson says that the company is working hard to ensure that conservative operators understand the reasons for this success, especially when it comes to replacing old equipment or making plans for terminal expansion


aken overall, the bulk handling world remains rather conservative, especially when it comes to introducing new technology to an established business. By ‘new technology’ I do not mean a new and innovative development; I mean a technology that a company or terminal has not used or considered up till now. Siwertell screw-type unloaders were extremely innovative when they were introduced over 40 years ago. They were eagerly adopted by some dry-bulk handling trades, particularly the cement industry, because of their high efficiency and totally-enclosed technology. However, some sectors and operators preferred to stick to traditional methods of unloading. Until recently the fertiliser industry, for the greater part, held that conservative viewpoint. Perhaps this was mainly because some operators believe that Siwertell’s technologically-advanced solution will not have the reliability of more basic machinery such as grab cranes. This view does not stand up to scrutiny. We can provide numerous 18


customer references that demonstrate the soundness of our design and engineering work and the reliability of our unloaders. These references also highlight important environmental benefits that are becoming ever more relevant in a world that puts increasing value on the commodities themselves, energy conservation and protection of the environment. These factors are persuading more players in the fertiliser trade to approach Siwertell.

Players that have made the change Fertiliser and sulphur terminals are turning to Siwertell to increase efficiency, raise safety standards and to provide a clean environment; the latter often to comply with increasingly stringent regulations. Paradeep Phosphates Ltd (PPL), a leader in the fertiliser industry in the state of Orissa, India, believes that environmental protection is a mainstream function of any business enterprise. It says that every effort should be made to balance industrialisation with the protection of the natural world.

Troubled by severe environmental problems at its jetty, PPL needed a new, clean ship unloader. This is now quite a common issue because traditional methods for discharging sulphur have become unacceptable in many applications, mainly for environmental and worker welfare considerations. After conducting exhaustive market research, PPL chose a ST 640-D railmounted Siwertell ship unloader fitted with a 4S safe sulphur handling system (see page 20). In 2011, IFFCO, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Limited, faced similar environmental problems and also needed to increase its unloading capacity. It concluded that the ideal solution was to replace the existing grab crane with a high-efficiency, fully-enclosed ST-790 D rail-mounted Siwertell ship unloader equipped with 4S. The unloader has been in commercial use since July 2013, discharging vessels of up to 75,000 dwt. It can handle sulphur at a rated capacity of 1,800t/h and rock phosphate at

between 1,600t/h and 2,100t/h, depending on material properties. Environmental concerns were at the forefront again for Indian fertiliser specialist, Coromandel Fertilisers Ltd, based in Visakhapatnam. Its 30-year old grab unloader needed to be replaced, while environmental claims from a naval base opposite its terminal had to be addressed. After research that included visiting reference installations, Coromandel ordered a Siwertell ST 490-F rail-mounted ship unloader with 4S. It now handles vessels up to 40,000 dwt at a rated unloading capacity of 400t/h; there are no more environmental problems with the naval base. In Australia, Fremantle Port Authority selected a rail-mounted Siwertell unloader to discharge sulphur at its bulk cargo jetty in the outer harbour at Kwinana. The Siwertell unloader has an enclosed conveying line with sealed transfer points. This feature,

combined with limited noise emission, ensures an environmentally-friendly operation for the port, which was a key aspect in Siwertell securing the order. Weighing 528 tonnes, the Fremantle Port Authority’s unloader handles ships up to Panamax size and has a rated unloading capacity for sulphur of 1,300t/h.

Good economics at all stages With the exception of the standardised conveyor system, Siwertell unloaders are tailor-made to meet the operator’s requirements. They benefit from a small physical footprint and lightweight construction when considered with other technologies that deliver comparable through-ship rates. This means that they require less investment in jetty construction, adding to their overall competitiveness.

Given effective maintenance, timely replacement of wear parts and periodic upgrades, they can be expected to give excellent, efficient performance for many decades.

Benefits of doing the right thing For many operators minimising spillage and emissions to the atmosphere are no longer optional considerations. Environmental controls mean that terminal owners must take steps to deliver clean cargo handling operations. A company can be reluctant to ‘do the right thing’ because it thinks it will mean adopting a compromise solution that will harm its competitive advantage. This may be true in some business areas, but when it comes to clean drybulk handling, it is quite the opposite case. Investing in a Siwertell unloader for environmental reasons will also deliver benefits that boost your operation’s efficiency and profitability.



heavily over specified. That is to say, they must be able to handle the peak rate achieved when a grab crane starts work on a full cargo hold, but for the greater part of the time they will be operating at well below their designed capacity.

Totally-enclosed unloading and conveying systems minimise dust emissions and eliminate spillage, meaning that the operator receives all the shipped cargo. The ship, terminal and surrounding areas remain unpolluted and so clean-up costs are minimal or non-existent. The working conditions for crew and port personnel are greatly improved. Our loading systems provide similar market-leading performance.

There are no such limitations with a Siwertell screwtype unloader. Unloading is continuous and the rate remains virtually constant right down to the tank tops. The layer-bylayer pick up from below the bulk material surface reduces disturbance and dust creation to a minimum. And the cargo pick up is so effective that the final clean up requirements are far less than with traditional unloading systems. The constant rate of discharge means that an optimised downstream conveying system can be used, in contrast to the systems needed to meet the huge but brief performance peaks experienced with grab unloaders.

Assessing unloading capacity How do you judge the unloading performance of rival technologies? Siwertell unloaders offer impressive rated discharge capacities, but we believe that through-ship capacity is the most telling performance indicator, in other words, how long it actually takes to unload a ship. This is far more important than the peak rate achieved and I’ll explain why. A grab crane discharges at a high rate when it starts work on a full cargo hold. But as the level of cargo in the hold falls, the grab has to travel further and further so the discharge rate decreases progressively and significantly. In addition, grab performance drops off even more when the cargo level falls to a point where the grab cannot fill itself completely. This varying performance means that an operator must invest in downstream conveying systems that are for the most part

Sulphur: corrosive, flammable and explosive The flammable and explosive nature of sulphur is only a serious issue when it is confined in an enclosed system. But because traditional sulphur handling technologies have an unacceptable environmental impact, enclosed systems are the way forward. Always a leader in this area, Siwertell developed the Siwertell safe sulphur handling system (4S) to minimise the risk of fires and explosions, detect them when they do occur, extinguish fires and safely contain blasts. 4S also ensures that fires do not spread downstream through the conveying and storage network.

ncreasing vessel size is placing huge demands on dry bulk handling systems. This is not only because they need to meet the ensuing increase in cargo quantities, they also need to load and discharge vessels as quickly as possible to minimise costs incurred in port. Additionally, handling many dry bulk cargoes, including grain, raises serious environmental concerns including atmospheric pollution from dust generation, cargo spillage, high energy consumption and unacceptably high levels of noise.



Grain terminal operators must think carefully when investing in new equipment and may feel compelled to select a compromise arrangement such as a pneumatic unloading system that is relatively clean and meets the capacity requirements, but impacts the environment and the company’s bottom line through its high energy demands. Fortunately, they do not have to look far for a no-compromise solution that delivers on both capacity and environmental impact requirements.

Delivering a commercial advantage “Our ability to address all these considerations represents both our commitment to environmental protection and a serious commercial advantage,” says Bertil Andersson, Sales Manager at Siwertell. “We are in the extremely enviable position of being able to offer truly market-leading technology.” Siwertell’s unique grain-handling attributes include the highest continuous rated capacities on the market, in excess of 6,000t/h for loading and 2,000t/h for unloading. The same machines can also handle soya beans, 22


meals and other non-free flowing food stuff materials at high capacities. This is another major advantage of Siwertell technology. In addition, they offer extremely low degradation and crushing rates, minimising the production of fines, which are defined as material smaller than the grain particles themselves. Fines are problematic for many types of cargo, but in grain handling they can make the grain more difficult to aerate, increase spoilage rates and increase dust emissions. Under some circumstances high levels of fines can result in a dusty atmosphere with a higher risk of fire and explosions. Fines have to be removed before milling; therefore their presence has a significant knock-on effect on grain processing as a whole. The increase of fines in a grain shipment can also mean that the quality of the shipment is downgraded. “Siwertell screw-type technology achieves extremely low damage rates to grain shipments because it handles the grain very gently,” says Jonas

Andersson, Technical Director, Siwertell. “Cargo flow speeds in the vertical conveyor are relatively low and there are fewer collisions between cargo particles during conveying. This translates into a very low level of fines production.” Tests undertaken with a thirdparty inspection company have proven that Siwertell’s screw-type technology causes next to no degradation of unloaded material (see separate box). When coupled with the ability to deliver all this with minimal environmental impact, through totally-enclosed conveying lines, dust-suppression systems and layer-by-layer unloading which minimises cargo avalanches in the hold, Siwertell screw-type technology is unrivalled for discharging grain. The high-capacity Siwertell systems are generally more compact, lightweight and quieter than alternatives with similar rated capacities, this delivers benefits in terms of load-bearing requirements and lower investment costs for new jetties. The quiet nature of Siwertell units also enables operations in close proximity to urban areas.

“Where complete import/ export dry bulk terminals are concerned, the advantages that Siwertell technologies offer combine to deliver an extremely cost-competitive solution where the economies of scale work in an operator’s favour,” Mr Andersson adds.

Worldwide references Worldwide references for unloaders, loaders and complete terminal solutions offer an impressive demonstration of Siwertell’s superior grain-handling capabilities. In the Port of Klaipéda in Lithuania, leading stevedoring company Bega showcases an agri-bulk handling terminal solution from Siwertell. Since commissioning in 2012, the terminal has been supporting the efficient import, export and storage of a variety of agri-bulk arriving by road, rail or sea. It handles more than five million tonnes of cargo each year, offering extremely flexible loading, unloading, storage and onward shipment capabilities; a fine example of a modern cargo hub. Prior to the new terminal, Bega had no dedicated storage areas, making it impossible to store agricultural products arriving at the port. It now boasts two linked warehouses; with a combined storage capacity of 160,000m³. Ships of up to about 70,000 dwt can be loaded at a rate of 1,200t/h by the railmounted ship loader, served by a system of totally-enclosed

conveyors. A travelling belt conveyor transfers material from the pier conveyors to the loader, allowing loading at any position along the length of the vessel. Another terminal solution with Siwertell technology at its heart is the privately-owned Newcastle Agri Terminal (NAT) in New South Wales, Australia. It commenced operations early in 2014 setting new standards in grain loading and rail discharge speeds, while minimising dust emissions and noise generation. The terminal features a Siwertell SBL 1600 TT rail-mounted loader with a loading spout for open hatches. It has a rated loading capacity of 2,000t/h for ships up to 60,000 dwt. The loader is fitted with a Cleveland Cascade chute, which controls the speed of the bulk material as it is loaded into open hatch vessels. This has the dual advantages of reducing dust emissions to a minimum and minimising cargo degradation. In the UK, Peel Ports Group’s Seaforth grain terminal in Liverpool features a multigrain Siwertell ST 790-D railmounted ship unloader with a rated capacity of 1,800t/h. It can discharge vessels of up to 75,000 dwt with a maximum beam of 33m. The main reasons for selecting Siwertell as a supplier were its exceptionally high throughship capacity, low energy consumption per unloaded tonne and the excellent service guarantees.

Gentle performance, independentlytested Over the years, Siwertell’s claims about extremely low degradation rates for a wide range of materials have been put to the test by independent third-party specialists. The latest independent test took place at the beginning of 2013, investigating wood pellet damage during unloading operations using the Siwertell type-ST 640-D ship unloader at the Port of Helsingborg, Sweden. The tests were carried out by independent Swedish company WSP Process to provide degradation data for a prospective customer prior to signing a contract with Siwertell.

Test method The pellets used were commercial pellets from Bioenergi Skandinavien, conforming to standard SS-EN 14951-1:2010 regulations. Eight samples were taken during unloading to verify the pellets bulk density and durability. A second screening, comprising 16 samples, was taken from the ‘Mogensen’ screen, a fines screen frequently used in the pellets industry. Bioenergi Skandinavien’s screening laboratory was used to analyse the pellets and fines.

Test result The use of the Siwertell unloader resulted in the creation of 2.5 percent of fines (with a size of <3.15mm). This minimal amount of damage was an important factor in the customer’s decision to enter into a contract with Siwertell.

Wood pellets are more brittle than grain, so if the degradation is acceptable for wood pellets then it will most certainly be acceptable for a grain handler. This is borne out by excellent reports from companies using Siwertell unloaders for handling grain. SIWERTELL NEWS SIWERTELL NEWS

hen we undertake the construction, delivery and commissioning of one of our machines, the customer gets far more than a simple, stand-alone business transaction. When we sign that contract it triggers our unwritten commitment to support the customer throughout the machine’s working life.

A job well done Recently we worked successfully with our customer Fremantle Ports in Australia, to eliminate vibration in the vertical conveyor of its Siwertell ship unloader. Siwertell machinery is designed to be robust and reliable and is constructed to high engineering standards. Nevertheless, we are only human and we can make mistakes. When we do, we want to put things right. Following the installation of a replacement part the vertical conveyor had developed a persistent and uncharacteristic vibration that proved difficult to diagnose. Although it did not materially affect the unloading performance, it was a fault that had to be addressed to avoid excessive wear and ensure the unloader’s long-term wellbeing.



Siwertell surveyor Daniel Funck flew to Fremantle to carry out diagnostic and remedial work. Mr Funck’s on-site technical diary explains that it was necessary to dismantle sections of the vertical conveyor in search of the rootcause of the problem, which he eventually identified as a misalignment issue. This meant that elements of the screw conveyor were rotating around different centre lines. Making use of laser alignment techniques and drawing on new parts delivered from Sweden, along with stocks of spares held locally, the alignment was corrected and the machine was reassembled. It is now quiet and free of abnormal vibration, operating to the customer’s complete satisfaction.

Successful cooperation Mr Funck said that Fremantle Ports’ cooperation was excellent during his stay, scheduling the time he needed for his investigations and providing him with all the assistance and specialist help he required. Customer support is so important in cases like this and delivers a win-win outcome for the two parties. John Stewart, Maintenance Manager (Outer Harbour) for Fremantle Ports, thanked Daniel Funck for a job well done. He said the personnel at

Fremantle Ports were impressed by Daniel’s methodical approach and technical knowledge in eventually identifying the problems causing the vibration issues. Fremantle would welcome him back for any future work.

Latest news Siwertell secures industry award success


Siwertell has won its fifth prestigious International Bulk Journal (IBJ) award. A joint submission with its customer Peel Ports took the prize in the Best Ship Loading/ Unloading System category at the awards ceremony held in London in November 2016.

The terminal is capable of supplying Drax power station with up to 10 train loads of wood pellets per day. Drax power station represents the largest single decarbonisation project in Europe; it will use up to three million tonnes of US-produced wood pellets a year. “We were honoured when Peel Ports asked us to partner with them in this award submission. We have immense faith in the quality and attributes of our products and take great satisfaction from ensuring that they achieve long working lives for their owners. However, there can be no better endorsement than a satisfied customer,” she adds. “Peel Ports could have entered the IBJ awards to showcase one of its in-house created port installations, but it chose to enter with an installation that we designed,” Ms Brækhus Cueva continues. “This speaks volumes about how proud and happy Peel Ports is with the performance of our unloaders.” Peel Ports Group and Siwertell have a well-established relationship, with Peel Ports choosing Siwertell 11 years ago to design, manufacture, deliver and install a similar Siwertell 790D at its Liverpool Grain Terminal, the UK’s largest grain import facility handling over one million tonnes per annum.

This success reinforces Siwertell’s place as an industry leader and is the latest in a string of IBJ award accolades. In 2009, 2013 and 2014, Siwertell received the award for the Best Ship Loading/Unloading System. In 2011, it won the award for Environmental Protection. The IBJ judges offered their congratulations to Siwertell and Peel Ports, noting that Peel Ports’ new £100 million biomass terminal at the Port of Liverpool – constructed using two fully-enclosed Siwertell 790-D screw-type ship unloaders – greatly increases berth capacity, enabling quick vessel turnaround and vastly reducing dust emissions.

They are also well aware of our regular successes, confirming our consistent performance and providing important industry recognition of our efforts and achievements. “The sound, proven concept of Siwertell technology provides our designers and engineers with a great platform to meet the wide variety of our customers’ needs. Add to this our experienced, knowledgeable field personnel and our understanding of the dry bulk market and you have a unique combination of products and services that improves the long-term nature of our customers’ investments and their profitability and success.”

Industry events are excellent customer touchpoints Industry exhibitions, conferences and trade events provide valuable networking opportunities for customers, representatives and experts, building and strengthening relationships. They also offer a vital opportunity when a company has a specific message for a particular industry. This was exactly the case for Siwertell when it exhibited at the 20th Arab International Aluminium Conference (ARABAL) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the end of November this year. ARABAL is a key trade event for the Middle East’s aluminium industry and is the only conference attended by every primary smelter in the region. Siwetell took full advantage of the opportunity to make the strong commercial and environmental case for its unloaders, which can offer enormous advantages for the alumina industry (page 8). ARABAL was the final visit in a long list of worldwide industry events that Siwertell has attended throughout the year, often exhibiting its offerings to existing and potential customers. “We have customers in almost every dry bulk sector and they operate on a global basis,” says Juha Huovilainen, Sales Director at Siwertell. “It is extremely important that we remain fully aware of industry trends and the international, national and regional issues that affect our customers.” In February Siwertell exhibited at the Mississippi Valley Trade & Transport Council (MVTTC) event, which focused on a range of commodities and how port complexes handle millions of tonnes of dry bulk material every year. In March, Siwertell, now a familiar face at Coaltrans, exhibited its market-leading coal handling capabilities in

Goa, India. This event was shortly followed by Intercem Amman, in Jordan. Its focus was on the cement industry and this theme continued at Intercem Africa at the end of May. Held in Nairobi, Kenya, this event noted that it was a transformational time for sub-Saharan African cement producers and traders and that competition in the region is increasingly fierce. Also focusing on cement handling, Cemtech Europé’s 25th anniversary conference and exhibition took place in Madrid, Spain in September. The exhibition and conference covered all aspects of the cement industry, from markets and trading through to manufacturing technology. Switching back to coal, Coal Power Egypt, held in Cairo, Egypt, also at the end of September, focused on safety issues when transporting coal from ports to plants, reducing both carbon and dust emissions from coal power production and achieving compliance with strict environmental assessment plans; issues that can be easily addressed by adopting Siwertell technologies.

Siwertell system chosen for the fourth time in four years by Turkish cement specialist Siwertell has secured its fourth road-mobile unloader order from Turkish cement specialist, Muhammet Gümüstas. Three similar systems have been delivered to the same customer since 2012. However, this latest unloader is a ‘next-generation’ unit, employing the same proven technology as its predecessors, but with the added benefit of some significant mechanical and electronic advances. The new trailer-based, diesel-powered, Siwertell 10 000 S roadmobile unloader is used to discharge cement at 300t/h. It is equipped with a double-bellows system to allow continuous operation and is fitted with a dust filter to minimise atmospheric emissions. “Good experience with its three existing Siwertell systems was an important factor in winning this latest contract with Muhammet Gümüstas,” says Jörgen Ojeda, Director, Mobile unloaders, Siwertell. “The fact that its competitors use Siwertell units was also a significant driver in this competitive business. The new unloader was delivered in August 2016 and is now in operation in the Turkish ports of Kardeniz and Marmara.

Getting the fundamentals right To maintain this commitment, Siwertell regularly asks its customers how it can do more to help. “In some ways the questions that we ask are pretty basic, such as, who do you contact if you need Siwertell spare parts? Do you have a local Siwertell contact person? Do you prefer to discuss business in your own language? But it is important to clearly establish these solid foundations; we then build on them in our efforts to provide customer satisfaction by actually doing what they want – not like some companies who do what they think their customers want.

“We know that our global representatives are close to our customers, they can ask these questions and feed the answers back to Siwertell. It is therefore very important for us to remain in close contact and foster our relationships with our representatives,” notes Mr Huovilainen. Over thirty years ago, as part of a strategy to strengthen communication within the representative network, Siwertell established a bi-annual representative’s meeting. The format for the event is generally similar and comprises a conference, workshops, a site visit and networking time. This year, the event was held in Manchester, UK, in September. It was attended by representatives from across the world and in combination with hosting Siwertell personnel, numbers rose to around 50.

The site visit was to Associated British Port’s Immingham facility on the UK’s east coast. Immingham is one of the UK’s largest dry bulk cargo ports, handling in excess of 20 million tonnes of dry bulk commodities each year, including coal, iron ore, biomass and agribulks. In 2015 two new Siwertell unloaders became a key part of the development of the Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal (IRFT), fundamental to the supply chain for biomass in renewable power generation in the region. The unloaders can handle ships of up to 70,000 dwt at a rated unloading capacity of 1,200t/h each.

Customer satisfaction is key “A common thread throughout the event was that teamwork is essential in a successful company, so we

can tackle challenges together. It is important to remember this, especially when helping customers with more complex needs or for those customers who operate in very remote places,” continues Mr Huovilainen. “Customer service is always a dialogue. Our customers’ thoughts and ideas are important to us. They help us find out exactly what kind of service is needed and what we can do to make this happen. We will continue to attend worldwide events and hold meetings such as these for our representatives, because customer satisfaction remains our top-priority.”

Good feedback Feedback from the event was good. For example, one representative, Khaled Zalloum from Jordan, said that: “We know of the advantages of Siwertell, but it was very interesting to hear about them directly from a customer who operates two different types of Siwertell unloaders, during the presentation that ABP’s General Manager, Craig Barbour, held.” Comments from other representatives included: Stephanie Dong, China: “The Siwertell representatives meeting is a great chance to exchange ideas and experiences, which will help sales promotion activities in our regions.” Triwono Nilam, Thailand: “The representatives of each country gain a closer connection with one another through the meeting.”
