top by the Waldport Chamber of Commerce located inside the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center, 320 NW Highway 101, in downtown Waldport, for local information. Located at the south end of the bridge, the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center presents a history of transportation along the Oregon coast from 1800 through the 1940s, including information about the development of the Alsea Bay bridges. Many displays offer a hands-on guide to bridge building, a tribute to renowned bridge engineer Conde McCullough and an interactive timeline of Alsea Bay history that runs along the walls of the center. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Waldport Chamber of Commerce maintain the center, which provides daily bridge tours during the summer. Maps and brochures are available during business hours. For more information, call 541563-2133 or 1-800-551-6949. Waldport Chamber of Commerce | 5

panning 2,910 feet over the Alsea River, the Alsea Bay Bridge is one of Waldport’s most cherished landmarks. The steel-arch bridge, built in 1991, pays homage to the original 1936 bridge that was designed by renowned bridge engineer Conde McCullough. A few of the old bridge’s decorative elements, including its Gothic spires, are preserved in a small park at the northwest end of the new span.

Pedestrian walkways on the bridge make it a popular spot for leisurely strolls above one of Oregon’s most scenic bays, where often one may spot dozens of baby seals resting on sandy banks while they wait for the adults’ return.

Waldport Heritage Museum

W

aldport’s Old Town, northeast of the downtown area, is situated on an old burial ground of the Alsi Indian tribe, who lived along the Alsea River and Bay in the 19th century. Visit the Waldport Heritage Museum and step back in time to learn about these earlier days, from how the Alsi Indians lived in harmony to the types of tools and equipment used by early loggers and fishermen. The museum now provides a place to preserve and display artifacts illustrating the history of South Lincoln County. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941 as the barracks for a new camp, the museum’s building was originally located on government property south of Waldport and later used to house conscientious objectors during World War II, before moving to its current site at 320 NE Grant St. Call 541-563-7092. Meeting room available.

Water under the bridge Activities on Alsea Bay and surrounding waterways Fishing

A

lsea Bay is the place for fishermen to catch steelhead, cutthroat and Chinook salmon, in addition to crabbing and clamming. Every August the Chinook salmon and a small population of Coho salmon cruise the tidewater until fall rains raise the Alsea River high enough for them to head upriver to their spawning grounds. Both species can be caught by casting large spoons and spinners from the bank behind the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center in downtown Waldport. Beginning in October, winter steelhead and cutthroat trout are plentiful in the river. For young anglers, Eckman Lake, a few miles east of Waldport on Highway 34, hosts an annual kids’ fishing derby in May, with thousands of rainbow trout planted in the lake beforehand. A large dock makes this lake an ideal place to take youngsters fishing throughout the summer.

Boating & Kayaking

With miles of scenic routes available, the Alsea River Water Trail and the Beaver Creek area are popular spots for novice and experienced kayakers and those who use paddle craft. Alsea Bay and River have over 50,000 user days by boaters annually. The Port of Alsea offers public docks for crabbing, fishing and moorage, a boat launch ramp, picnic area and great beach access. It also has daily and annual launch permits, as well as boat trailer parking. The port, located on the waterfront just upriver from the mouth of Alsea Bay, also provides an accessible viewing platform and crabbing float that give visitors a closeup look at marine life. Crab rings, bait, boat rentals and fishing tackle are available nearby. Formed in 1910, the Port District includes the communities of Waldport, Yachats and Tidewater. More than 5,000 boats are launched annually from the port’s public launch ramp, with boaters from 127 Oregon cities and at least 10 other states using the facilities.

Crabbing & Clamming

Crabbing and clamming are a favorite recreation on the central Oregon coast, especially in the Waldport area. Dungeness crab can be caught off nearby piers or by boat in the Alsea Bay, if you have a shellfish license. Some of the best crabbing takes place right off the public docks at the Port of Alsea, using such equipment as a crab pot, ring or snare. For beginners, there is always a ready hand to help out at the port’s Crab Shack. Dock of the Bay Marina and McKinley’s Marina & RV Park in Waldport rent and sell crabbing gear. Boat rentals are also available. Alsea Bay is home to many species of clams as well, including gapers and cockles. During the summer, clamming and crabbing demonstrations led by park naturalists are offered at the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center in Waldport.

Beach Activities

Located directly on the Pacific Ocean and the Alsea Bay, Waldport is a premium spot for beach activities. The area offers miles of secluded beaches that are perfect for taking walks, kite flying, sand sculpting and searching for agates. From the Alsea Bay Interpretive Center, anyone can walk the beach all the way to Yachats and often see only a handful of fellow beachcombers. When the weather is right, people windsurf and even splash in the water. These beaches are the perfect place to catch spectacular sunsets. Governor Patterson State Park on Highway 101, just south of Waldport, is an excellent place to begin exploring the finest beaches on the central Oregon coast. Keep an eye out for unusual treasures that wash ashore after each turn of the tide.

For maps and information about recreational opportunities, visit the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station in Waldport at 1130 Forestry Lane or call 541-563-8400. Waldport Chamber of Commerce | 11
