Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt Dr. Bradley L. Hewitt has served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SIUE since August 2002. Dr. Hewitt served 13 years in numerous positions at SIUE before stepping in as the seventh Director of Athletics in the school’s history. Hewitt’s charge was to regain SIUE’s storied national success of the 1970s and 1980s (16 national championships) and expand that success across a broad-based athletic program. Since his start as the Director of athletics, 37 Cougar teams have competed in their respective NCAA individual or team championships. Hewitt has helped elevate SIUE’s previous best 131st place finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup to a 78th place finish in 2004, a 37th place finish in 2005, a 4th place finish in 2006, and an 11th place finish in 2007. For the 2006-07 seasons, the Cougars won both the prestigious Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Sports Trophy and the Commissioner’s Cup. The Cougars won the All-Sports Trophy with 141.5 points, the highest total points recorded in a single season since the award was conceived more than 25 years ago. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the program that produces the overall best finish in the league’s seven “core” sports. SIUE posted top five finishes in six of the seven sports that count in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, including conference titles in men’s soccer and softball. Also considered are volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball. The pinnacle of achievement was a 2007 national championship in softball. In 1994, Hewitt, in his role as Assistant Athletic Director, served as the University’s venue manager for the United States Olympic Festival-’94 track and field and wrestling events. Since 1994, Hewitt has held several positions at SIUE, including acting Chief Executive Officer of the SIUE Foundation and acting Vice Chancellor of University Relations (1998-2000), adjunct graduate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education (1996-2003), and Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Relations (1994-1998 and 2000-present). From 1995-1998 and 2000-2002, Hewitt was the internal and external liaison for the Vice Chancellor of University Relations, overseeing Alumni Services; SIUE Foundation; Public Affairs; Photographic Services; and University Graphics, Publications, and Printing. Hewitt has a diverse background in intercollegiate athletics. Before coming to SIUE, he was the director of sports marketing and associate head football coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; the recruiting coordinator and assistant football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and recruiting coordinator, track event manager and assistant football coach at his alma mater The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Hewitt earned a bachelor’s in mathematics in 1981 from Central Missouri as well as a master’s in athletic administration in 1982. Hewitt completed his doctorate in education at SIUC in 1994. Hewitt has been a highly-active member of the area community serving as a member of the board of directors for the St. Louis Sports Commission since 1999, a member of the board of directors for the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors for the Prairie State Games and as a member of the State Games of America Board of Directors. He is presently serving his second term as a member of the Edwardsville District 7 School Board. In 2006, Hewitt completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute, which provides specialized executive management programs for sports management professionals. The Sports Management Institute was developed in 1989 as a joint venture of the athletic departments and business administration schools of the University of Southern California, the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina. Significant fundraising success (especially in facility development) has been a capstone of Hewitt’s professional career. Since 2000 Hewitt was instrumental in securing several multi-million dollar facility gifts and pledges ($10 million plus in total) for the University. These facilities gifts helped build the 12,000 sq. ft. Birger Hall (SIUE’s Foundation and Alumni Building), the 1,500 seat SimmonsCooper Baseball Complex, and the 5,000 sq. ft. SIUE softball stadium/clubhouse. He was a significant member of the SIUE Foundation team that saw exponential growth in the Foundation’s annual giving campaign and endowment from 1995-2002. Since rejoining Cougar Athletics in 2002, he has focused on increasing the athletic endowment, doubling the number of endowed scholarships. Hewitt and his wife Kay, a professional educator, reside in Edwardsville. Their daughter Loren is a 2007 graduate of SIUE and tennis alumnae, and their son Matthew is a senior at the University of Illinois majoring in mechanical engineering.

2009 Season Preview When the 2009 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer regular season officially opens Sept. 1 at Evansville, Cougar coach Kevin Kalish is ready to see just how good his team can become. It will likely be a work in progress, admitted Kalish. That doesn’t mean the Cougars have low expectations. That’s quite the contrary. “We really don’t know how good this team can become,” said Kalish. “I am really excited to see how this team develops and what level they can reach.” The team is anchored by a group of senior players who understands SIUE’s system and what it takes to win at the Division I level. Senior Zach Bauer (St. Louis) returns in the back with junior Randy Roy (St. Louis) providing leadership at midfield. “Zach is one of the best players in college soccer,” Kalish said. “He’s the player we look towards for leadership and stability in the back.” Roy, a former Jack Blake Award recipient, is an extremely gifted center midfielder, noted Kalish, who can dominate offensively and

defensively. “Randy is our midfield general. He has the ability to impact each game he plays in,” said Kalish. Bauer, like Roy, sat out last season when the Cougars entered the transition to return SIUE men’s soccer back to the NCAA Division I level. SIUE has just the 2009 season left in its transition as the “fast-track” men’s team. In 2010, SIUE becomes a playing member of the Missouri Valley Conference and will be eligible for the NCAA Championships. Kalish warned against looking too far ahead, even one season. “That wouldn’t be fair to Jack Twellman our seniors or the players on the team this season,” he said. “We are a starting role. focused on making sure this team reaches its Kalish also will look to freshmen Zach full potential.” Godat (St. Louis), Casey Stewart (Durango, The Cougars have a solid group of three goalkeepers jockeying for position. 2009 Season Preview expected to provide the depth at midfield. SIUE’s frontline is admittedly young but quite talented. These players are all proven prep scorers and will be working to improve as the season progresses. Jack Twellman (Florissant, Mo.) garnered significant playing time in his debut last season in a Cougar uniform. Excellent with his back to the goal, Kalish said Twellman is an opportunistic goal scorer and good all-around soccer player. Freshmen Peter Kelly (St. Louis), Jared Tejada (Troy) and Dustin Geist (Durango, Colo.) will be asked to log a significant amount of minutes this season on the forward line. “Between those players, we have the ability to score some goals this season,” said Kalish. Kalish also announced that a handful of players would sit out the season as redshirts. That list includes Mike Jones (St. Peters, Mo.), Ryan Wilhelm (St. Louis), Benny Jeffery (Florissant, Mo.), Brian Groark (Florissant, Mo.) and Jordan Barnes (Florissant, Mo.) The Cougars also hope to get another season from Dustin Attarian (St. Charles, Mo.), who suffered a season-ending injury during the summer.

2008 2009 Schedule Schedule Challenges Challenges Cougars Cougars The men’s soccer program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is looking forward. The Cougars will be among the teams playing in the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference schedule and will be eligible for postseason play next season. Before that happens, SIUE coach Kevin Kalish has put together a challenging schedule for the 2009 team. It features eight home games to be played at Korte Stadium and four games against NCAA Division I teams ranked in the top 30 nationwide by College Soccer News. It all begins Wednesday, Aug. 19, when the Cougars take on Milwaukee in a 6 p.m. exhibition game at Korte Stadium. SIUE also faces UIC (Illinois-Chicago) in an exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. “We’re very excited for the challenge,” said Kalish. UIC is ranked No. 11 in the country by College Soccer News. SIUE’s other top 30 games include at No. 28 Louisville (Sept. 11), at No. 18 Dayton (Sept. 25), and at No. 9 Northwestern (Sept. 27). “With a great recruiting class and getting some of our veteran players back into the lineup, we’re excited to see how we stack up against the nation’s best,” Kalish said. SIUE’s home contests include Oakland (Sept. 4), Columbia College (Sept. 18), Alabama A&M (Oct. 9), Centenary (Oct. 15), IUPU-Ft. Wayne (Oct. 17), and Central Arkansas (Nov. 14). 2009 Cougar Men’s Soccer

2008 Season Recap The 2008 season was like the return to the good old days. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’ soccer was playing an NCAA Division I schedule again, and it felt good. Kevin Kalish took over the reigns as the team’s head coach, becoming the third coach in school history. Kalish has some tough acts to follow in Bob Guelker, who won 216 games and two national championships in 19 seasons, and Ed Huneke, who recorded 251 victories in 22 seasons. It’s a challenge Kalish was ready to pursue having completed eight seasons as an assistant under Huneke. During those eight seasons, SIUE appeared in the NCAA Tournament six times, finishing second in 2004 and making the Final Four in 2001 and 2005. The 2008 Cougars began on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Missouri State. Senior Bob Ridder scored the game’s only goal against what will be a future Missouri Valley Conference opponent. SIUE took a pair of tough losses to Drake and Northern Illinois before rebounding for a pair of road wins against Wright State and IPFW. Chris Anzalone scored in both of the games. The Cougars were 4-0 when Anzalone scored.

Freshman Jack Twellman scored his first career goal in a 3-2 loss at Dayton, which ended a three-game losing skid for the Cougars. SIUE defeated McKendree in its only official home contest 2-0. Anzalone and Twellman scored before a crowd of 1,538 at Korte Stadium. The Cougars pumped up the defense in a 0-0 tie with Memphis. Even though SIUE did not score, the defense’s strong showing held one of Conference USA’s top teams without a goal. SIUE stumbled a bit toward the end of the season before closing out with an impressive 3-0 win at Central Arkansas (UCA). After the season was complete, SIUE learned that both UCA and SIUE would join the Missouri Valley Conference to become the seventh and eighth members beginning with the 2010 season. Nick Frasca, who posted a 1.33 goals against average for the season, recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win over UCA. That shutout also vaulted him to No. 1 on the all-time shutouts list with 21, passing Ed Gettemeier (1979-1982) and Josh Richardson (1999-2003) who both had 20. Twellman was the team’s leading scorer with four goals and an assist. Kalish also took comfort in knowing five of his top players sat out the season as redshirts in preparation for the 2009 season. They are Mike Jones, Kevin Bielicki, Randy Roy, Scott Meyer and Dustin Attarian. 26

1972, 1979 National Champions

1972

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville won the first-ever college division national championship, defeating Oneonta College 1-0 in the title game. SIUE went undefeated that season for an 11-0-3 mark. The three ties came from rivals Western Illinois, Saint Louis and Akron. The tie to Akron was quickly avenged in the opening game of the NCAA Championships as the Cougars rolled to a 3-2 win. Chris Carenza, the brother of SIUE’s all-time leading scorer John Carenza, posted 12 goals and three assists to lead the Cougars. Tom Twellman, who had four goals and two assists, was named SIUE’s Most Valuable Athlete. Kevin Howe would be named the team MVP. In goal, Rick Benben allowed just 10 goals and grabbed 85 saves.

1979

Proving that friends could together win a national championship, SIUE grabbed its only NCAA Division I crown behind a plethora of talented players, many of whom moved on to highly-successful professional careers. It was the second national title for future Hall of Fame Coach Bob Guelker. The crafty coach got a hat trick in the championship game from Matt Malloy as SIUE defeated Clemson 3-2 for the title. After winning its first two games, SIUE lost its next two at Seattle Pacific and San Francisco. There was team dissension, but the Cougars rallied to go undefeated in its next 20 games, a school record. One of SIUE’s all-time best goal scorers, Don Ebert, scored a school-record 22 goals that season and added 10 assists. Malloy had 11 goals but didn’t get into double-digit scoring until the title game. SIUE also had outstanding goalkeeping, with Ed Gettemeier and Mark Downar sharing time in the nets. Downar allowed 11 goals and Gettemeier gave up just nine. For Bob Guelker, it also was special to have his son, Tim, on the team. His three assists to Malloy in the championship game made Dad proud. The Cougars ran the tables on college soccer’s premier teams. Saint Louis was defeated in the first round of the playoffs 2-1 at what would later be renamed Bob Guelker Field. SIUE followed with a 2-0 win over Southern Methodist and a 4-2 revenge victory over San Francisco. The Cougars then took Penn State 2-1 and closed it all with the victory over Clemson. After the season, many continued to play for SIUE. Others moved on. Thirteen players would eventually play soccer professionally, a sign of just how good this team really was.

John Stremlau

John Carenza

A stabilizing force in the Cougar midfield, John Stremlau played on four consecutive NCAA Tournament teams from 1972 to 1975. The 1972 team won the NCAA Division II national championship with Stremlau as the second-leading scorer on the team as a freshman.

The 1979 men’s soccer team includes Assistant Coach Rick Benben, Don Ebert, Tim Guelker, Ed Gettemeier, Mark Downar, Bob Bozada, Jeff Cacciatore, Tuaya Chiwanga, Tim Clark, Tom Groark, Joe Howe, Dave Hummert, Dave Hundelt, Pat Malloy, George Mishalow, Morris Mwongo, Steve Schell, Stuart Stevenson, Terry Trushel, and Mike Twellman.

Greg Makowski

A three-time, first team All-American (1975-1977) for the Cougars, Greg Makowski led SIUE to a secondplace finish and a national semifinal in four seasons. Makowski later was the team captain of the U.S. Olympic Soccer team from 1977 to 1981 and a member of the U.S. national team from 1978 to 1982. The first player selected in the 1978 NASL draft by the Colorado Caribous, Makowski played for several professional teams and was an MISL All-Star from 1983-1985 with the Kansas City Comets.

Rick Benben

Rick Benben was a major reason for SIUE establishing a tradition of excellence for men’s soccer. He is one of the links between SIUE’s two national titles. Benben was the starting goalkeeper on the 1972 NCAA Division II national championship team and was the assistant coach for Bob Guelker on the 1979 NCAA Division I national championship team.

www.siuecougars.com

Ed Gettemeier A member of the national championship men’s soccer team in 1979, Ed Gettemeier went on to set the school record for shutouts with 20 in his goalkeeping career from 1979 to 1982. In the national championship season, Gettemeier was named the Bronze Boot Most Valuable Player. Coach Bob Guelker

Coach Bob Guelker laid the foundation for the tradition of men’s soccer at SIUE. Almost immediately, Guelker transformed a new program into a perennial winner. He became the first coach in collegiate soccer history to win both an NCAA Division II championship (1972) and an NCAA Division I championship (1979) at the same school. Guelker, the United States coach for the 1972 Olympic team, compiled a Soccer Hall of Fame resume with a record of 311-77-26.
