Today’s opponents have had a less than ideal campaign, finding themselves just a point above the relegation places with only three games left of the Southern League Premier Division Central season. Last season’s points tally of 51 is now out of reach for Manager Tim Flowers’ men, who currently sit on 38 points, just one point above Ives. The Rouslers found themselves in a relatively respectable position in the table heading into the Christmas period, having picked up some decent form in their October and November fixtures, but having only picked up three wins since the turn of the year, Bromsgrove started to slip down the table. They will take confidence however from their opponents today having an even worse 2026 record, with Ives having picked up their first win of the year in their previous league outing against Royston Town. Ives fans will look to take confidence from the result when these two opponents faced off in the reverse fixture, with Ricky Marheineke’s men running out 4-0 winners at The UK Electrical Stadium.

Bromsgrove haven’t had much to shout about in the other FA competitions this season, with Flowers’ men finding themselves knocked out by Evesham United at the First Qualifying Round stage.

They did manage to make it through the first round of the FA Trophy, beating Barwell at the 3 Qualifying Round stage before being knocked out by Leek Town in the First Round Proper.

LukeBenbow

34-year-old Luke Benbow has been enjoying some good form in front of goal as of late and will be looking to continue in this vein when he takes the field at Quattro-Tech Westwood Road on Saturday afternoon. The forward has scored two goals in two games, including a goal in the 84 minute against Spalding United which helped his side claim a hugely impressive 2-0 win over a side who currently sit 2 in the league. He also scored an all-important 95 minute penalty in a recent game with Royston Town, which secured what may turn out to be a vital point on the road for Tim Flowers’ men.

Benbow joined Bromsgrove in the summer of 2025 from fellow Southern League side Stourbridge and has previously applied his trade for Redditch United, Solihull Moors, Hednesford Town and Nuneaton Borough.

Royston Town v St Ives Town

Pitching-In Southern League Premier Central 06-04-2026

Monday 6th April

After just over 100 days, that winning feeling finally returned to St Ives Town as manager Ricky Marheineke’s men produced a dominant display to claim all three points against Royston Town on Easter Monday Two goals from skipper Michael Richens saw Ives run out 2-0 winners on the day, in a result that confirmed Royston’s relegation to Step 4.

Marheineke made two changes from his side’s 2-1 defeat to Harborough Town last Friday, with Kai Source and Amaru Kaunda coming in for Aaron Smith and Jernade Meade

Royston Town manager Chris Watters made three changes to the starting XI that defeated Banbury United on Good Friday, with Ollie Stephenson, James Brighton and Konstantin Ivanov being replaced by Joe Iaciofano, Bradley Smith and Jamie Judge.

Ives started the brighter of the two sides as they looked to impose themselves on the contest from the beginning. The early pressure forced a miscommunication between defender and goalkeeper that almost allowed Theo Alexandrou to take the ball off Royston keeper Reuben Rabstein, but the Crows shot stopper just managed to gather the ball.

On 14 minutes, Alexandrou did manage to test Rabstein with a shot from the edge of the area, but the keeper was equal to the effort and pushed the ball to safety

All that was missing from Ives’ fast start to the game was a goal and they had the opportunity to get themselves on the board with 15 minutes gone, when Richens was brought down in the penalty area as a corner was played in Referee Alfie Finch-Critchley wasted no time pointing to the spot, awarding a penalty Dan Lawlor, who scored his one and only spot kick this season against Quorn, stepped up to take but was not as fortunate this time around as Rabstein sprung to his left and denied the midfielder from giving his side the lead.

In a season that has been characterised by missed opportunities to seize the momentum in matches, the travelling Ives faithful were hoping history was not about to repeat itself 10 minutes later, Kaunda was played in behind the Royston backline with an onrushing Rabstein to beat, only for the Ives forward to see his attempted lob saved by the Crows shot stopper

Monday 6th April

The visitors continued to come forward and finally broke the deadlock on 35 minutes, with Richens producing a superb solo effort to drive towards the box, holding off the challenges of three Royston players, before unleashing a cute outside of the foot curler that found the bottom left-hand corner

This goal gave Ives a deserved lead heading into the half time interval, but with the away side having a bad habit of letting leads slip through their fingers, the travelling support knew there was still a long way to go in this one.

Ives picked up where they had left off in the first half at the begging of the second period and could’ve doubled their advantage with 50 minutes on the clock, when Kaunda found himself bearing down on Rabstein’s goal, only for Ives’ number nine to be denied by a good save from close range.

The next 15 minutes of the game saw very little in the way of clear cut opportunities for either side Royston looked to create some uncertainty in the Ives backline by producing dangerous deliveries into the box, but the Ives defence remained resolute and were more than up for the task of dealing with a physical Crows forward line.

Duncan Idehen, who looked solid throughout, almost got himself on the scoresheet 65 minutes in when his header was cleared off the line by Judge, who was well placed to nod the ball away to safety

Some more heroic defending kept the home side in the contest six minutes later as a good low save by Rabstein denied Neo Dobson from close range, before the ball found its way to Alexandrou inside the penalty area, whose well-struck effort at goal was acrobatically cleared off the line by Alfie Thornett Despite the lowly league position Crows find themselves in, the commitment of the players on show couldn’t be questioned.

Despite the stubborn resistance from Watters’ men, an unfortunate miscommunication in the Royston backline saw Theo Alexandrou pounce on the loose ball and look to round Rabstein, only for the Crows shot stopper to bring down Alexandrou in the penalty area and deny a clear goal scoring opportunity The penalty was given and the inevitable red card was shown to Rabstein, which saw centre back Archie Locke handed the gloves. It was Richens who placed the ball on the spot, looking to double his side’s advantage and his goal tally for the day, which he duly did, drilling the ball hard and low into the bottom right corner 76 minutes into the contest

Though it may not come as much of a consolation for Locke, the defender can be proud of his performance between the sticks, making some superb saves to prevent Ives from grabbing a third and fourth goal in the contest. Kaunda had the best of the late opportunities, with the striker getting himself on the end of a pinpoint ball across by Lawlor, only for the former Cambridge United man to see his effort saved

Following six minutes of added on time at the end of the second half, referee Finch-Critchley brought the game to a close, with Ives claiming their first victory since the 27 of December and their first clean sheet since the 1 of November Marheineke’s men still find themselves in the relegation zone following Stamford’s win against Quorn, but now sit only a point behind Bromsgrove Sporting in 18 , who they play this Saturday at Quattro-Tech Westwood Road th

HISTORY OF BROMSGROVE SPORTING

Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club History

Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club was formed in 2009 by a group of former Bromsgrove Rovers directors and supporters when the latter was facing closure That would have meant the town having no football club playing at a serious non-league level With Rovers’ difficulties deepening, Sporting were offered the tenancy of the town’s Victoria Ground by the local Council but had to play home matches at Studley FC, until the Victoria Ground pitch was in a playable condition

Their first ever match (a pre-season friendly) was at Stratford Town in July 2010 then a month later the season started in the Midland Combination Division Two away to Young Warriors in Coventry. Sporting played their first match in Bromsgrove on 6th November in front of a crowd of 458 and ran up an unforgettable 7-0 win against Greenhill.

Myles Day had been the manager but he resigned due to outside commitments and was replaced by Rovers legend Stewart Brighton Sporting missed out promotion but a reorganisation of the Midland Combination saw them move into Division One for season 2011/12

Not long after the start, Brighton stood down as manager owing to work commitments and was replaced by Keith Draper They finished 3rd and played their first cup final losing the Evesham Hospital Cup to Littleton on penalties Although missing out on automatic promotion, Sporting were promoted to the Midland Combination Premier Division when the number of teams was increased.

For season 2012/13, Graham Scott was appointed joint manager but Draper stepped down at the end of March leaving Scott in charge eventually finishing 6th. Sporting also claimed their first silverware with the Reserves winning the Midland Combination Reserve Division Two and the Under 18’s claiming success in the Worcestershire FA Youth Cup

Season 2013/14 saw Adrian Mander as joint manager with Scott but he stepped down in October, leaving Mander in charge Sporting ended the season 2nd to Brocton and gained their first trophy success winning the Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup beating Paget Rangers Sporting also entered the FA Vase for the first time but bowed out to Westfields after wins against Lye Town and Stafford Town.

After 2 games of the 2014/15 season Adrian Mander resigned as manager and Paul Smith was appointed his successor.

Smith guided The Rouslers to runners-up in the league for the second season They also lifted the League Cup at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium beating Southam United 3-2 in the final Sporting also competed in the FA Cup for the first time but lost to Coleshill Town after a replay In the FA Vase Sporting progressed to the 3rd Round before losing to Thurnby Nirvana

HISTORY OF BROMSGROVE SPORTING

2015/16 saw The Rouslers as bridesmaids again; finishing second in the Midland Football League Division One to Coventry United, despite a club record 91 points

Season 2016/17 was Sporting’s most successful to date winning the league with 104 points (19 ahead of their nearest rivals Hinckley AFC) and remaining undefeated for the whole campaign In addition, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase before losing narrowly 2-1 on aggregate to Cleethorpes Town The season also saw a vast increase in home support with several crowds of over 1000 including a record 3349 for the match against Cleethorpes

For Season 2017/18 Sporting were promoted to the Midland Football League Premier Division but Smith, who guided the Rouslers to promotion, stepped down as manager in February and his assistant Brendan Kelly took over. Kelly and new assistant Andy Mason brought in experienced coach, Kevin Barry, who was also the manager of the RAF Senior XI

The club won the Midland Football League Premier Division at the first attempt, losing just 6 of their 42 league fixtures scoring 110 goals and earning a place in the Southern League Division One Central

Sporting’s FA Vase run came to an end at the hands of eventual winners Thatcham Town but the club did run out winners of the Worcestershire Senior Urn after a penalty shoot-out over Lye Town.

Sporting faced a new challenge in Season 2018/19 with their first encounter of step 4 football. This was another successful campaign finishing runners-up and a place in the play-offs. Sutton Coldfield Town were beaten by a single goal in extra time of a tense semi-final then extra time was also needed to beat Corby Town in the final ensuring a third successive promotion

Sporting started in the Southern League Premier Division Central and when the COVID19 crisis forced an early end to the season and were in 4th place and hopeful of at least a play-off place

The next season was curtailed with just 8 matches played though a few friendly matches were played against local teams Season 2021/2 were mixed fortunes with the best ever run in the FA Cup before losing at home to former league club Grimsby Town. However league form dipped and manager Kelly left the Club. Gavin Hurren took over but he also left at the end of the season after finishing 18th in the league.

Thomas Baillie was appointed manager but after a poor run of results, he parted company by mutual agreement Captain Mike McGrath was made temporary manager and with results improving, his appointment was made permanent However, a poor end to the season saw the Rouslers finish above the relation zone though with nine points to spare

HISTORY OF BROMSGROVE SPORTING

There were a number of changes off the pitch at the beginning of season 2023/4 with chairman Mike Burke stepping aside and Brian Seymour-Smith taking over However Seymour-Smith and his colleagues departed abruptly after two months Vice-chairman Graham Scott took over at the top temporarily before a new chairman in former Rovers manager Rod Brown was appointed In February McGrath departed as player/manager and was replaced by former England goalkeeper and experienced non-league manager, Tim Flowers who just did enough to avoid relegation At the season end, former manager Paul Smith returned to the dugout

However Smith could not repeat his previous success as a manager and stood down in November 2025 with Sporting oneplace off the bottom of the league. He was replaced as manager temporarily by coach Scott Adey-Linforth who immediately turned results around taking the club out of the relegation zone. Adey-Linforth's appointment was made permanent and Sporting finished 14th in the league.

During the close season there have been several departures and arrivals but there is a feeling that the club has a stronger and more experienced squad for the current campaign and hopeful of an improved season
