The Blues will have come into this season looking to make a solid start to life in step three, with Worcester City having been promoted from the Northern Premier League Midlands Division last season, along with fellow league new boys Quorn. Manager Chris Cornes’ side have certainly stuck to that task, with today’s visitors currently sitting 9 in the Southern League Premier Division Central table, having accrued 30 points from their opening 20 matches. th

They were a little bit slow off the mark, with Worcester only managing to claim their first win in the division on matchweek five, with an impressive 3-0 away win against Halesowen Town. The Blues faithful then enjoyed a nine game unbeaten stretch from the 23 of September to the 22 of November, which saw Cornes’ men shoot up the standings. They come into today’s fixture on the back of a win against strugglers Royston Town last weekend and no doubt they will be looking to create another wave of momentum to help see them through a busy Christmas period.

Unfortunately for Worcester City fans, their side’s cup campaigns were relatively short lived this time around, with Blues having been knocked out of the Fa Cup at the First Qualifying Round stage and the Fa Trophy at the First Round Proper stage.

DanSweeny

Sweeny made the move to Worcester City from Alvechurch this summer. The much-travelled centre forward is known for his physicality across the front line which will be much needed in the higher step. He is previously of Kidderminster Harriers, Redditch United, Bromsgrove Sporting, Macclesfield Town and Alvechurch to name a few.

The 27-year-old has already managed to bag himself eight goals in 17 appearances so far this campaign according to the Worcester City club website. His most recent goals came in the form of a brace away at Stourbridge, which helped his side to claim a 3-2 win on the day.

The Worcester City man will no doubt be looking to add to his tally this afternoon.

Saturday 29th November

Four defeats in a row have knocked Ives off track after their best start to a season at step 3 in ten years. But there were some real green shoots on view in this game with Liam Cross and George Munday both impressing for 45 minutes as they continue their roads to recovery after their respective injuries.

The high-flying Reds capitalised on two defensive errors by Ives to seize control of the game and despite a Cross’s well taken goal just after the half hour and a dominant second half display Ives were unable to find an elusive equaliser and a spectacular late overhead kick from Luke Cox put the icing on the host’s cake.

The opening goal in fifth minute must be put down to poor defending as Ryan Beswick’s low free kick from the right was dummied at the near post and bundled home off the knee of Dennis Digie coming in behind him without an Ives player able to intervene. The hosts went close to a second five minutes later as Simeon Cobourne outmuscled Kellan Hickinson inside the box and fired over from a narrow angle.

Young Alfie Shepherd in only his second start for Ives was looking confident and causing a few problems down the left. He came close to claiming an equaliser in thirteenth minute as he picked up a ball across the box from Cross and turned inside his man before curling in a shot from the edge of the box that was destined for the corner of the net before covering defender Cox headed it around the post

Ives keeper Ollie Taylor was forced into a diving save in 24th minute as Dee Master ran at Ives defence before feeding the ball out to Finn O’Boyle who cut inside Matty Miles and fired a low shot that skimmed across the 3G surface forcing Taylor to hurl himself low to his left to palm the ball away

Two minutes later it was the turn of Taylor’s opposite number Adam Harrison to hurl himself across his goal to keep out a fierce shot skimming off the surface. This effort was a well struck snapshot from fully 30 yards by Jernade Meade.

Saturday 29th November

The Reds had shown their pace in attack on a few occasions, but Ives had been clever in timing their step ups to catch attackers offside up until the 29th minute when they got it wrong. Cobourne was the man to capitalise as he ran clear onto Beswick’s threaded through ball and comfortably beat Taylor to double the host’s lead.

But that two goal cushion was only short lived as Ives bounced back in style

Initially keeper Harrison made a hash of a 30 yard effort from Michael Richens conceding a corner. He didn’t really do a lot better with Kellan Hickinson’s inswinging flag kick only pushing the ball back into play. Jordan Williams was first to the loose ball heading it back into the mix where Cross was first to react volleying home into the roof of the net from eight yards

Ives pushed for an equaliser before the break but the closest that they came was Cross turning on a ball on the edge of the box to force a diving save out of Harrison who this time held on well.

Manager Ricky Marheineke made two changes at half time, one of them at least a planned move, with fit again George Munday replacing Cross to give each of the recovering players 45 minutes. The second change saw Gibou Njie replace Kellan Hickinson to give a bit more rigidity in the centre of the park.

It did not take long for Ives to start to threaten as with the second period only 40 seconds old Tyrone Baker, who was now operating on the left, got past Silvio Bello only to be hauled down by the struggling defender. Shepherd’s perfectly flighted free kick looked like it was going to be won in the air by Duncan Idehen only for Reds skipper Mason Frizelle to do just enough to deflect the ball off the head of the Ives centre back at the back post.

The visitors came within inches of pulling level and setting up a barnstorming second half only four minutes later. Munday battled well to win possession high up the park and fed the ball to Baker cutting in from the left. The speedy striker outpaced a defender before letting fly with a curler from the edge of the box that keeper Harrison could only admire as it curled past him and bounced over off the crossbar.

LAST MATCH LAST MATCH REPORT! REPORT!

Saturday 29th November

Ives continued to press and Idehen should have scored in 56th minute when he rose completely unchallenged six yards out to get on the end of Shepherd’s inswinging corner. But instead of the net bulging the ball flashed wide of Harrison’s right hand post with the relieved keeper looking on.

The visitors continued to probe with Shepherd causing problems on the right and Baker on the left both aided and abetted by the busy Munday battling through the middle. But despite enjoying a lot of possession and looking threatening Ives struggled to test keeper Harrison. The keeper had to make one diving save to keep out Richens 72nd minute long range effort and this time he did well to cling onto the fizzing ball.

But as Ives looked to push more men forward they were always likely to be susceptible to a speedy Reds break. However the third goal for the hosts when it came, arrived from another free kick delivered into their box by Beswick. A scramble ensued and a header at the back post was initially cleared off the line by Williams but the ball dropped to Cox who finished in spectacular fashion with a perfectly executed overhead kick to take the “goal of the game” accolade away from Cross.

To give them their due even with the game now gone from their grasp Ives did not give up battling and they went close to pulling another one back twice in 89th minute. Initially Richens fed in Munday through the right channel. The big striker’s goal bound effort deflected wide off the knee of Cox. From the resulting corner substitute Ethan Creary challenged Harrison preventing the keeper from claiming the ball and Idehen stooped to head the loose ball wide.

The visitors were unable to create further opportunities in the added five minutes and the points moved the upwardly mobile Reds into the play-off places whilst Ives slip down to 15th in a tight middle of the table. Whilst they still sit ten points above the drop zone an upturn in fortunes will be necessary before long. Those green shoots certainly hint that may be coming very soon.

THERE are eras and then there are Eras with a capital E.

Alan Devonshire’s Maidenhead United reign certainly falls into the latter. After 913 games, the legendary West Ham United FA Cup winner called time on his Magpies Era last weekend.

The 69-year-old has managed close to 1,500 matches across his career in the dug-out that started at Maidenhead where they won promotion to the Isthmian Premier in 2000, before eight years at Hampton & Richmond, who he guided from Isthmian South to the Conference South play-offs.

Four years at Braintree Town – fresh from promotion to Non-League’s top flight – followed and his Iron defied the odds to survive and upset the big boys.

In May 2015 the ex-England star made the trip back to York Road and, as underdogs again, took them to National League South title glory where they too made their mark at the top table.

Sean Marks, who played for Devonshire at Braintree and Maidenhead, can picture his former boss stood on the side of training before a big game, cup of tea in one hand, chocolate digestive in the other.

“We could be playing a really top, top professional team – a Stockport County, a Luton or any other big team – and you can imagine him looking at the boys thinking, ‘It’s alright, we’ve got this covered on Saturday’,” he told The NLP. “It was that mentality. Knowing the team he’s got will do the business and he had every trust in his team to do it.

“I think that sums him up about right. Old school, with a great sense of humour and winning in the new form of football.”

Dave Tarpey is another player who knows Devonshire very well and benefited from his methods.

The 1980 FA Cup winner gave him his big chance at Hampton & Richmond Borough, with the pair later reunited at Maidenhead after Tarpey had initially joined the Magpies in 2014.

In three years under Devonshire, Tarpey netted 87 goals in 124 appearances for the Magpies, including a league and club record 44 goals to help Maidenhead to promotion in the 2016-17 season.

“I remember a number of trips away on coaches where he will say he’ll get you some protein food before the match and then he’d go and get us protein pizzas as a pre-match meal,” Tarpey said.

“I remember a few away journeys as well where we had to stop at a certain restaurant because he wanted his ham, egg and chips before the game!”

Sam Barratt was at Maidenhead when Devonshire rejoined and has signed for him two more times since.

Fittingly, he scored the final goal of Dev’s reign in their win over Chippenham, borrowed a flat cap from a fan in the crowd and saluted the boss.

“He’s been very loyal to me and that can be rare in football,” Barratt said. “It comes from honesty from both sides. He’s repaid it with a lot of loyalty and I respect that a lot.

Seeing where Maidenhead was as a club when I signed aged 18 to where it is now, it’s almost unrecognisable – a lot of that is due to him – as well as the community side expanding. That comes handin-hand with the club growing, being promoted and sustaining their time in the National League.”

Liam Lockett-Liam is a product of the Clubs youth system, the exciting forward man gets City fans on the edge of their seats every time he takes on his fullback with twists and turns. Liam was one of the clubs top scorers in Step 5 but found things are little harder last season with competition for places so fierce. Liam also had short stints at Alvechurch FC and Bedworth United FC.

Izak Reid-Probably our most experienced player at the club. Izak is a tricky wide player who much like Lockett is brilliant in taking on his full back, provides valuable assists from wide positions. Felix Miles-Felix joined the Club in October 2024 from Hungerford Town. Another who became instrumental in our bid for promotion. His goals and assists were huge He is a tricky number 10 with exceptional feet and a good passer of the ball and will be sure to look to kick on again this term.

Teddy Rowe-Teddy is another new face for this season. Previously of Leamington Spa FC in the National League North, he is another tricky player who can play in the 10 or out wide He has quick feet and is much like Felix with his keen eye for a pass and will also take on a shot if available. Ted started his career with Aston Villa making one first team appearance before spells at Gloucester, Banbury and Leamington.

HISTORY OF WORCESTER CITY

Worcester City Football Club was formed on 9th September 1902 when another Worcester-based club, Berwick Rangers, went into liquidation. The Birmingham League agreed to let City take over Rangers' fixtures

The Club moved to St. George's Lane in 1905 and City's first honour was the Worcestershire Senior Cup, which was won for six successive seasons between 1908 and 1914. In the final season before World War 1 a Birmingham League and Senior Cup double was achieved

There was little success in the early post-war years, but eventually City began to attract some quality players and surprised everybody by winning a second Birmingham League title in 1924/25.

For 1928/29 City appointed a full-time player-manager, Frank Womack. City clinched the title for a third time with ten wins out of their last eleven matches Womack was succeeded by Joe Smith, an ex-England and West Bromwich Albion full-back. 1929/30 season saw the title won again, City scoring an incredible 153 goals in 34 games

In 1938 City joined the Southern League, winning the Southern League Cup in 1940 – it was wartime and City were able to field several Football League professionals as guest players!

Although crowds flocked to the Lane when football returned after the war, there was little success until 1957/58, when under player-manager Roy Paul, City took Aldershot to a second replay in the F A Cup First Round, going out at St. Andrews, Birmingham in front of a crowd of 22,926 – a record for a City game. The following year, City achieved a famous Cup result which is still talked about today They first beat Millwall and then Liverpool – at the time playing in Division 2 – at the Lane before losing to Sheffield United in front of a record home crowd of 17,042 in Round 4

City nearly went out of business in the early sixties, but supporters rallied to keep the Club afloat and were rewarded with some big name signings Players such as Peter McParland, Norman Deeley, Eddie Stuart, Ivor Allchurch and Gerry Hitchens all appeared in the blue and white shirt but it was not until the appointment of Nobby Clark as manager in December 1974 that the glory days truly returned.

HISTORY OF WORCESTER CITY

The Southern League Division 1 North was won in 1976/77, with City gaining 69 points from a possible 76 and losing only one League match - the final one!

Two years later, the Southern League Premier Division title was won for the first time The season would be memorable for many reasons In the F A and Welsh Cups, there were outstanding home wins over Plymouth and Cardiff and a draw at Newport County City seemed destined for a tie at home to West Ham United in Round 3 of the Cup until a last minute own-goal allowed Newport to level the replay. The visitors went through after extra time in front of a crowd of 10,223 – the last-ever five figure attendance at the Lane A crowd of 7,386 for the penultimate home game saw City beat their only rivals for the league title, Kettering Town, to clinch the Southern League Premier Division championship.

In 1979, City joined the newly-formed Alliance Premier League (Now the Football Conference), and finished third in its inaugural season. There were further F A Cup victories at home to Wrexham and Aldershot, but City were relegated in 1985.

There was little in the way of success in the 20 years that followed In 2001 City won the Dr Martens Southern League Cup, and two City players – Adam Wilde and goalkeeper Danny McDonnell – were capped by England at semiprofessional level, then in 2004 City became founder members of the Conference North. The following year they reached the second round of the F A Cup, losing 1-0 to Huddersfield Town at the Lane in a game televised live on the BBC. Huddersfield were drawn away to Chelsea in the next round.

In 2008, City switched to the Blue Square South, but after narrowly avoiding relegation in 2009/10 were back in the North after just two seasons.

2012 /13 was the final season at St George’s Lane. The ground was sold for housing, but without a new stadium to move to City ground shared at Aggborough, the home of Kidderminster Harriers, for three seasons whilst The Supporters Trust worked to achieve a return to Worcester.

HISTORY OF WORCESTER CITY

2014/15 proved to be one of the most memorable seasons in City’s long history. On 9th November 2014 two goals from Sean Geddes earned a-2-1 win at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry City in the 1st Round of the F A Cup, backed by over 3,200 travelling supporters in a crowd of 8,439. The 2nd Round saw another memorable performance. City drew 1-1 draw away to Scunthorpe United, earning a replay in front of live TV cameras and a home crowd of 4,339. The replay ended 1-1 after extra time and it took an F.A. Cup record breaking shoot out for Scunthorpe to eventually go through 14-13

The following season City again reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup before bowing out 3-0 away at Sheffield United in front of a crowd of 11,108.

City left Aggborough in 2016, moving to play at Bromsgrove Sporting. City were relegated from the Vanarama Conference North in 2017, but the Board had already decided to withdraw from the league and as a result City were demoted by three Leagues to Step 5.

The Supporters Trust made a planning application to build a new ground at a local playing field, Perdiswell. It was refused by the City Council but the decision was overturned on appeal Nevertheless the City Council made it clear they would not make the land available and City remained in exile, now playing in the Midland Football League

In February 2019 a decision was taken to become a supporter-owned Club. The Supporters Trust became majority shareholders and after months of negotiation the City Council finally supported the Club returning to Worcester, City becoming tenants at the Worcestershire F A ’s Claines Lane headquarters in 2020.

After finishing 4th in the Midland Football League in 2021/22 City endured an awful season the next year and were nearly relegated. However, two decisions were taken which would have a huge impact Firstly, Worcester-born Chris Cornes was appointed as manager in November 2022 and he steered City away from the drop. Then in May 2023 supporters agreed to give successful local businessman Simon Lancaster a 51% majority stake in the Club

HISTORY OF WORCESTER CITY

The change in fortune was dramatic City switched to the Hellenic League Premier Division for the 2023/24 season Chris Cornes recruited many of the best local players and he led his team to the Club’s first league title in 45 years City were champions with a record 101 points, losing just one league game all season. They also won the Wiseman Floodlit Cup and reached the semi-finals of the F.A. Vase, where they lost in a penalty shootout It was the best season that many City fans could remember and after 7 years at Step 5, City were promoted, moving up to play in the Northern Premier League for the first time in Club’s history

In the 2024/2025 the clubs fortunes continued on an upward scale. Firstly they started the summer with winning a one off cup final against Hereford Pegasus in the Herefordshire Senior Cup before later that season completing the county cup double, beating Alvechurch in the WFA invitational cup

However, the season overall turned into a massive one for the club. In what was a stop start season, going on some good runs, but dropping points in games where they were expected to win, they somehow never fell out of the playoff positions and ended up stuttering their way into the semi finals with a game to spare

This is where the squad had their best performances, something every City fan knew was in the team, on their day, when they were on it, they could beat anyone in the league And so in the semi final, away at Anstey Nomads, going into the game as underdogs, we scored inside the opening minutes to settle the nerves before adding a second later on in the half From there the team controlled the game for large parts and dealt with anything thrown at them by the physical Anstey team.

The final was no different. Underdogs going to Corby Town in what would see the two best supported teams from the division lock horns The first have was pretty uneventful and the teams went in at 0 v 0

The scoreline probably did more to boost the players confidence, on top of the semi final win, and in the second half there only looked to be one winner. City would win a corner with Adam Mace whipping it in for Hayden Reeves to power a header towards goal, Zac Guinan on had to redirect in front of the goalkeeper

City were in dreamland, and then suddenly a City attack saw Guinan and Miles combine, time seemed to stand still as Felix Miles slotted the ball home with 10 minutes left on the clock and promotion to step 3 was becoming a reality. Corby did pull one back to make the end a nervy one but the whistle blew and City completed back to back promotions and the players forever cemented their names in the clubs history
