Iain Morrison

The club was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Ives fan, Iain Morrison. His family have asked for the following tribute to be included in the programme this afternoon. We will be remembering Iain before the game with a minute’s applause.

Iain was born on 13/11/57 and grewup on Sturton Street, Cambridge. He was educated at Brunswick Primaryand the Manor, completed a bricklaying apprenticeship and spent his working life in the building industry, starting in the familybusiness, then becoming self-employed and later working as a site manager before retiring.

A footballer from an earlyage, Iain played for school teams and countyyouth sides before moving into adult football with Comberton and local Sundaypub teams. A robust, tough-tackling centre back, he never shirked a challenge.

Influenced byhis brothers, Nigel and Alan, Iain was a lifelong Spurs supporter. This was passed on to his sons, Steve and Dave, and later his grandson Jack despite Jack once asking his Grandad at the age of eight if he could support Arsenal, onlyto be firmlytold “No chance.”

After hanging up his boots, Iain helped establish a youth team at Comberton, first coaching Dave and later managing Steve’s team through to Under 16s. He later spent his Saturdays watching Jack play, travelling across the countywith Gareth.

After moving to St Ives with his partner of 23 years, Lyn, he became a regular at the St Ives Town first-team and U18 matches, enjoying the football, awaydays, a few pints and the banter with friends including Steve, Damo, Andyand Gareth.

Iain was a much-loved dad, grandad, partner, brother and friend whose presence, humour and loyaltymeant a great deal to everyone who knewhim. He will be deeply missed and fondlyremembered byall whose lives he touched.

The Yeltz will have come into this season wanting to go one better than they did last campaign, which saw manager Russ Penn’s side finish in the promotion places. Unfortunately for the midlandsbased outfit, they were not able to make their promotion dreams come true as they were knocked out by AFC Telford in the Play-Off Semi-Final. Judging by the start they have made to this campaign, they look to have put that disappointment behind them, with Yeltz currently sitting in 4 place, with 42 points to their name. Penn’s men are also enjoying a rich vein of form, coming into this afternoon’s fixture having won four on the bounce in the league.

Yeltz fans were treated to a decent run in one of the other FA competitions this season. Today’s visitors made it through to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, beating Stratford Town and Grimsby Borough, to set up a tie with Isthmian League Premier Division side Aveley. Halesowen played out a 0-0 draw with their opponents to force a replay, which saw Aveley run out narrow 1-0 winners on the day, ending Yeltz’ Fa Cup dreams for another season.

Unfortunately for the Halesowen faithful, they weren’t able to put together a similar run in the FA Trophy, with Penn’s men falling to Leek Town at the 3 Qualifying Round stage. rd

Eaton Socon v St Ives Town

Huntingdonshire FA Senior Cup Semi-Final 20-01-2026

Tuesday 20th January

Ives ended up on the wrong end of a cup upset as they tamely went out of the Hunts FA Senior Cup to gallant lower level Eaton. The game was never going to be a classic on a bumpy pitch with a strong cross wind. Ives also had the excuse of not playing for over two weeks having had their last two league games both called off for the weather With the need to get a game into the legs of the players manager Ricky Marheineke named a strong side for the tie.

It quickly became apparent that despite the gulf in levels between the two sides the conditions were going to make it a much more even game than might have been anticipated Neither side got a shot on target in the first fifteen minutes and when that first effort between the posts did finally arrive in 18 minute home keeper Reece Lewis made a very comfortable save to keep out Michael Richens’s tame 30 yarder.

This effort did spark a brief period of Ives pressure. Three minutes later Kellan Hickinson did well to beat keeper Lewis to an Ethan Creary through ball but he was forced wide and failed to hit the target with his shot from a narrow angle Liam Cross was next to fail to find the target as Ives broke at pace from an Eaton free kick. Hickinson put Cross through the left channel but a bobble ensured that his effort went way over the top.

The first real save of the game came from Ollie Taylor in Ives goal as good work down the Eaton right between Alfie Turner and Chris Koo ended with the latter testing Taylor with a crisp drive from 15 yards that the keeper parried away at his near post

Ives best chance of the first half came four minutes before the break when Duncan Idehen rose above the crowd at the back post to get on the end of Cross’s corner from the left but the powerful centre back could only direct his downward header straight at Lewis who held on well

Manager Marheineke made three changes at the break with Matty Miles and Aaron Smith replacing Jordan Williams and Jiah Medrano respectively and Nathan Tormey making his debut replacing Liam Cross up front

LAST MATCH LAST MATCH REPORT! REPORT!

Tuesday 20th January

Ives enjoyed a positive start to the second period and Tyrone Baker went close six minutes after the restart as he ran clear onto Hickinson’s through ball but Lewis was smartly off his line to spread himself and make a brave save

The opening goal for the hosts on the hour owed a lot to the vision and forethought of Nathan George. Picking up the ball on halfway he was given space to stride forward and spotted Taylor well off his line anticipating a through ball But the Eaton’s number 18 decided instead to try his luck He struck it perfectly and the ball sailed over the stranded keeper bouncing on the goal line before finding the back of the net.

That would have been a goal worthy of winning any game but it was not to be as Ives levelled things up six minutes later with a completely opposite type of goal, but they all look the same on the score sheet Hickinson delivered an in-swinging corner from the left into a crowded six yard box where it dropped to the floor at the near post Smith was first to react prodding the ball over the line from close range.

The small contingent of Ives faithful hoped that this would spark their side into life but the game continued in similar fashion to before as a mainly midfield contest Baker had Ives only other real effort of note in 71 minute when he fired a 25 yard effort wide after patient build up. But as time ticked down the confidence in the hosts seemed to grow and they came close to winning it four minutes from time as substitute Jake Williams glanced a header inches wide after a Jaiden Fitzpatrick free kick had been headed back into the mix by James Ducket st

With the final whistle going a few minutes later it was straight to penalties Ives won the toss and went first but Theo Alexandrou and Richens were both denied by keeper Lewis to put them on the back foot as Williams and Fitzpatrick both confidently netted for the hosts Baker and Creary both netted for Ives but Dom Mason grabbed the occasion with a Paneka giving Turner chance to find the top corner and send the gallant hosts into a final against local rivals St Neots Town

Regardless of the result hopefully the run out will have got the team back firing after their two week layoff. But to counter that there were some worrying signs from the game with a few players appearing to pick up knocks from some of the robust challenges from their hosts The most concerning seeing, arguably Ives best player on the night, Gibou Njie being helped to the changing room by the medical team whilst the Eaton team were still enjoying their celebrations.

HISTORY OF HALESOWEN TOWN

Halesowen Town is one of the oldest teams in the country and claims to have been formed in 1873 Local historian Norman Jones wrote “there is evidence which shows that for the first ten years of the team’s existence it was the James Grove Button Factory team and that it adopted the present name in the early 1880’s The earliest records that the Football Association have on file relating to Halesowen Town F.C. are dated 1882……

When peacetime returned after World War II, the Club reformed. In season 1951/52 both Birmingham & Worcestershire Senior Cup Finals were reached. In front of a 6,000 crowd at Stourbridge, we lost in the Birmingham final to Brierley Hill Alliance but triumphed over Hednesford in the Worcestershire final, played at Bromsgrove The same season saw us suffer our worst ever post-war defeat when we travelled to Merthyr Tydfil in the Herefordshire Senior Cup and were soundly beaten 0-9.

1955 brought our first major achievement when we reached the First Round of the FA Cup but lost 4-2 at home to Hendon in front of a packed Grove crowd. In March 1955, Ronnie Dugmore notched an incredible 7 goals when we won 10-0 at Dudley in a Birmingham League match. In August 1957, we achieved our highest post-war winning margin when we beat Coventry Amateurs 13-1 in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

The 1970’s brought us a period of struggle, and for times the only thing keeping us running was the effort of 'Mr Halesowen Town' - Harry Rudge. Before his untimely death in 1990, 'H' filled every role in the club at one time or other, including player, manager, groundsman, secretary, and anything else you can think of.

HISTORY OF HALESOWEN TOWN

Then suddenly something strange happened - we got a decent team together and started winning things Manager Paddy Page assembled a squad of promising youngsters, and in 1982-83 we had an unbelievable year. We won the West Midlands League for the first time, as well as winning the League Cup, but more importantly we reached the final of the FA Vase at Wembley narrowly losing 1-0 to VS Rugby. Two years later we were back at the home of football. This time there was no mistake, as we beat Fleetwood 3-1 in the greatest day in the history of the club. The following year we once again won the Vase by beating Southall 3-0 in front of over 17,000 people, most of whom had come down from Halesowen. From 1985 to 1991, we reached the First Round of the FA Cup for 7 consecutive years. On 4 occasions we played professional teams, Southend United, Brentford, Cardiff City and Tranmere Rovers.

The season of 2010/11 saw one of the poorest playing records in the Club's history, finishing the season in bottom place and scoring only 24 goals on top of conceding 107 times Two years later and in the 2013/14 season, a large amount of great success came the clubs way, as two goals from top scorer the previous campaign Ben Haseley, ensured the 3 points that crowned us league champions and promoted to step 3

The Peter Swales Challenge Trophy was added the following week, with a 3-1 win against Curzon Ashton. John Hill added to his squad two players with league experience, Neil Mackenzie and Iyseden Christie.

Fast forward to 2018 Club President and ex Chairman Colin Brookes became the ultimate owner of the club with his daughter and chair Karen Brookes and Keith McKenna becoming Directors of the club The Yeltz narrowly avoided relegation and for the 2017-18 season will be playing in the newly formed Evo-Stik South Premier Division Central In November 2018 the new management team of Rob Smith and his assistant Larry Chambers were appointed to replace John Hill and Matt Clarke Sadly the 2018-19 season saw relegation to step 4 for the Yeltz with Lee Hughes and Asa Charlton at the helm for the last 10 games. Paul Smith took over as manager in the summer of 2019 as he looked to get the Yeltz back to step 3 at the earliest opportunity.

HISTORY OF HALESOWEN TOWN

The Yeltz were looking at promotion back to step 3 when the Covid-19 pandemic stopped football and the world in its tracks as the league results were expunged and the league declared was null and void. The Yeltz had also reached the Semi-Final of the FA Trophy, and even took the lead at Concord Rangers before a late 2-1 defeat The following season lasted no more than a dozen games before being curtailed. The 2021-22 season saw Halesowen reach the play off semi-final where defeat to Chasetown saw us stuck at step 4 for a third successive season. The 2022-23 season was quite different, a season where the Yeltz never slipped below a play-off place all season and gained promotion in a play-off final against Spalding United in front of 3,250 fans at a sellout Grove.

The clubs return to step 3 in the 2023-2024 after 4 seasons away, saw Halesowen hold their own in the Southern Premier Division Central and finish the season in 8th place. A status of which fans would have accepted before the season began. The first full season under current boss Russ Penn, the 2024/25 campaign, took the club to new heights in the English non-league pyramid. The club were top of the league for a total of 19 days throughout the season, the fourth most of any club in the division Penn's Yeltz recorded a run of seven wins in nine league games over a period of two months, having beforehand lost three league games in four during the month of September Earlier this year, we went on an unbeaten run of 13 matches, until our eventual defeat against AFC Telford United in the semi-final of the play-offs.
