Da Lisboa Oriental

O Oceano, o Tejo e o Mar da Palha – três entradas para explicar Lisboa O sítio de Lisboa desenha-se pelo encontro do Tejo com o oceano, a via fluvial e o caminho marítimo. O alargamento do espaço de junção, o Mar da Palha, um pequeníssimo mediterrâneo na costa atlântica, atrai os homens e permite-lhes a riqueza, em sucessivas actualizações que a História e as Geografias vão, a um tempo, determinando e possibilitando.

Após um percurso longo, de um milhar de quilómetros, e variado de terras e de gentes, o Tejo finda-se numa espécie de delta, entre ilhotas, conhecidas localmente por mouchões, para se encontrar num estreito gargalo, que faz a comunicação entre o grande oceano e o Mar da Palha.

As margens deste regolfo-mar são assimétricas na geomorfologia e, em parte por isso e muito pela acção dos homens, são-no também na paisagem social e económica.

Na margem norte, menos recortada, os afluentes, ribeira de Alcântara, a jusante, e rio Trancão, a montante, definem pelo encontro das suas bacias o quadro onde caberia a escolha para o sítio original de Lisboa, que viria a ter lugar entre os vales de Alcântara e Xabregas. A partir daí, a urbe crescerá linearmente ao longo da margem, projectando novos estabelecimentos humanos nas duas margens do seu mediterrâneo, prolongando-se por ribeiros e esteiros, até onde a navegação (e a maré...) o permitem.

A margem esquerda, mais recortada, irá organizar-se segundo um rosário de sítios, sempre aproveitando as vantagens que conferem a relação terra-água e a proximidade de um mercado, cidade e porto, que por essa qualidade alarga as redes de contactos, as oportunidades.

Na margem esquerda, ao longo de dois milénios, sucedem-se as indústrias – extracção de ouro, vidro, sal, cerâmicas, pesca e conservas, moagens, cortiças, matadouros, estaleiros navais, químicas, siderurgia, electrónicas, automóveis e muitas outras, aproveitando janelas e postigos de oportunidade.

Em breve unidas por duas pontes, as duas margens sempre estiveram ligadas pelas relações dos homens, materiais e espirituais. Se os empresários o perceberam e praticaram, os poetas souberam assinalá-lo. As religiões imprimiram-lhe as marcas mais fortes e duradouras: o Cabo Espichel foi destino de grande peregrinação muçulmana, dos mouros que habitavam a envolvente ocidental (até Sintra) e setentrional (até Lumiar) de Lisboa, e

essa peregrinação foi «cristianizada», mantendo-se com os seus círios até aos nossos dias; a Senhora da Atalaia, nas antigas terras do Ribatejo e que hoje são do concelho do Montijo – mesmo à saída da nova ponte – era até há pouco tempo local de romaria para as gentes de Lisboa Oriental, de Alfama a Marvila, como nos descreveu Fialho de Almeida, à sua maneira. Ora, como rezam os documentos, D. Afonso Henriques doou à Mitra de Lisboa «todas as rendas e terras de Marvila que possuíam as mesquitas dos Mouros»! e, talvez não só por mera coincidência, a Herdade da Mitra, até ao século XV na posse dos arcebispos de Lisboa, no século seguinte é património do Morgado de Pancas e Atalaia!...

Na cidade e alfoz imediato, nos primeiros tempos, de Roma a Portugal, a banda ocidental, orientada para o lado do oceano, teve os maiores favores na valorização económica e monumental, mas a simetria acabaria por se impor ainda na Idade Média: de Alcântara (Calvário) a Marvila, sucedem-se, em contraposição equilibrada a partir do núcleo central, os conventos, os palácios e as quintas senhoriais periurbanas. O rio Trancão, navegável, «prolonga» a urbanidade até aos Tojais e a Loures, onde grandes dignatários da nobreza e do clero constroem palácios, como o da Mitra, do Monteiro-Mor, do Correio-Mor.

A recorrência da vocação de plataforma logística As duas penínsulas, de Lisboa e de Setúbal, que formam hoje uma área metropolitana, constituem um valor de localização para a afirmação oceânica da União Europeia. Na finisterra da Europa, uma importante infra-estrutura portuária, com tradição e vocação oceânicas, pode desempenhar o papel de uma grande plataforma logística não só para Portugal e para a Península Ibérica, mas também para o conjunto da Europa.

O desenvolvimento dos meios de transporte terrestres e em particular das ligações ferroviárias, potencializados pelas inovações no domínio das telecomunicações, podem conferir à fachada atlântica da Península Ibérica, onde existem recursos humanos significativos, potencialidades para, por um lado, desconcentrar indústrias e outras actividades localizadas nas regiões mais congestionadas da Europa e, por outro lado, abrir portas a investimentos de terceiros, que tenham necessidade de um apoio do transporte marítimo.

No fundo é actualizar a permanência, trazer para os nossos dias o que foi uma vocação de Lisboa no seu período de maior afirmação no conspecto das cidades europeias: do século XV ao século XVII Lisboa foi uma plataforma logística avançada da Europa, na sua relação com as Américas, a África e o Oriente e em complementaridade e sinergia com outras cidades europeias, do Mediterrâneo ao Báltico, mas com maior ênfase no que volta a ser o miolo da Europa: Londres, Paris, Randstad... hoje, Londres, Amsterdão, Antuérpia, no passado.

Uma toponímia que permanece O Mar da Palha, mais do que um regolfo por onde entra o Tejo, devagarinho, por entre ilhas (mouchões), no vaivém das marés, é realmente um Mar, por isso tem toponímia adequada. Entre todos emerge o Cabo Ruivo, que ficou assinalado com força na industrialização tardia, monumentalmente marcado pela torre da refinaria e pelos tubos da petroquímica. Cabo Ruivo continuará por muito tempo associado a SACOR/PETROGAL...

Pela terra, ao longo da ribeira, outros topónimos sonantes e cuja explicação original vai ficando cada vez mais longínqua: o Braço de Prata, um dos heróis do mar que, como outros, poderia ter passado os seus últimos dias nas calmas das doces encostas de Chelas ou Marvila, voltadas para o mar, ainda que um pequeno mar, exactamente como o fez o Fernão Mendes Pinto, que da sua quinta do Pragal (Almada) deveria sonhar, nos sonidos das brisas e das ondas da Caparica, com os terríveis mares do Sul e do Nascente. Mas D. António de Sousa Meneses, que perdeu o braço em 1635, a defender as costas do Brasil contra os ataques dos holandeses, voltou e, depois da prótese que o haveria de «eternizar» dando nome à quinta que herdou de seu pai, embarcou de novo, primeiro para a Índia, depois para o Brasil, onde acabaria os seus dias já no último quartel do século XVII. Olivais eram presença forte, como as vinhas, na envolvente rural imediata de Lisboa – curiosamente as oliveiras impuseram-se mais na toponímia que as vides: Olival Basto, Olival do Santíssimo, Rua da Oliveira, Largo da Oliveirinha...

Por último a Igreja, fortemente implantada desde o início da nacionalidade, com destaque para o Convento de Chelas; mas o mais interessante é o apreço em que os bispos de Lisboa têm estas bandas orientais, Tejo acima, acessíveis por barco... Por isso

melhoraram sucessivamente a «residência» de Marvila, até que D. Tomás de Almeida mandou edificar, no século XVIII, o actual Palácio da Mitra; já no século XVI um Poço do Bispo ganhou tal nome no fornecimento de água às populações que até veio a dar nome à maior concentração de armazenistas de vinho de Lisboa – e o Poço do Bispo é mais conhecido pelo vinho do que pela água...

Também a Mitra terá um desvio significativo, quando um dos ministros (Interior) de Salazar, o coronel Lopes Mateus, mandou, nos anos 30, construir nos terrenos livres um albergue para alojar ou simplesmente esconder (quando Lisboa tinha visitantes ilustres) os vagabundos e outros pobres da cidade. Para muita gente o topónimo Mitra não é assimilado ao elegante palacete episcopal, hoje propriedade do Município, mas sim aquela memória triste de albergue-presídio.

Nobilitação vs. industrialização À «nobilitação» das antigas «terras das mesquitas dos mouros», e de toda a Lisboa Oriental, seguir-se-á um processo de inversão, resultado da introdução do caminho-de-ferro e das vagas da industrialização – desde os alvores da introdução da máquina a vapor até à refinaria e petroquímica de após-guerra. À introdução de novas infra-estruturas, estradas, comboios, expansão das instalações portuárias e à implantação de unidades industriais correspondem, por um lado, movimentos demográficos, das gentes da Beira Tejo, aos imigrantes das Beiras, Trás-os-Montes e Alentejo e, por outro lado, o progressivo abandono residencial dos estratos sociais mais abastados.

Ordenamento e ocupação espontânea cruzam-se na Lisboa Oriental Após as primeiras vagas de indústria, desinseridas de qualquer plano de ordenamento, apenas «ordenadas» pelo caminho-de-ferro e pelo acesso ao transporte fluvial e marítimo, vão seguir-se, no processo de planeamento que o município enceta em finais dos anos 20 e que atinge a maturidade duas décadas depois, intervenções planeadas, a diferentes escalas, que consolidam a vocação industrial da faixa ribeirinha a nascente de Santa Apolónia e que se prolonga para lá dos limites do concelho.

A esta «vocação» junta-se o destino residencial do hinterland, que originará desde o início dos anos 40 até à actualidade vários bairros de iniciativa pública: Encarnação, Madre de Deus, Olivais Norte, Olivais Sul, Chelas, que, sucessivamente, vão obedecendo aos paradigmas urbanísticos vigentes em distintos momentos.

Para promover aqueles conjuntos residenciais o Município fez, inicialmente, grandes aquisições de solo, que lhe permitiriam uma acção eficaz.

Todavia, a antecedência das implantações industriais, o abandono prematuro de muitas explorações agrícolas e a progressiva degradação da paisagem e do ambiente vão favorecer a invasão por ocupações espontâneas, sobretudo em terrenos públicos, mas também nalguns privados, que originarão bairros de lata, de que o famoso Bairro Chinês, na Quinta do Marquês de Abrantes (que continuava a antiga herdade do Arcebispo...), constitui exemplo típico e duradouro.

O declínio industrial e portuário acentua a degradação paisagística e aprofunda o processo de marginalização social As novas infra-estruturas portuárias e a implantação de indústrias, da refinaria e petroquímica às unidades de pequena e média dimensão, «limpas», muitas vezes deslocadas da área portuária contígua ao centro da cidade, criaram uma nova paisagem, viva e moderna, contrastando com as «traseiras» de barracas, casas e anexos de antigas quintas, transformados em residências operárias.

O insucesso portuário e o declínio das actividades industriais originaram uma degradação da paisagem. Ao mesmo tempo, desde o início dos anos 70, constrói-se o maior núcleo de habitação social do País, Chelas – que se estende da faixa industrial ribeirinha até ao aeroporto – que cada vez tem menos que ver com a envolvente produtiva. Chelas nunca será o grande bairro operário, inserido num contexto urbano-portuário-industrial, conceito que esteve na decisão que originou o seu planeamento, mas configurar-se-á rapidamente como um enorme ghetto social, que a estruturação «celular» e certos conceitos arquitectónicos contribuirão para acentuar, quer enquanto espaço vivido, quer enquanto espaço percepcionado – a de fora para dentro e de dentro para fora.

Mais a montante, a degradação acentua-se com a desorganização de implantações portuárias ou industriais precárias, com

o fecho de unidades activas, até com a implantação de um gigantesco vazadouro camarário!

A Expo 98 como pretexto e instrumento de regeneração urbana As grandes manifestações urbanas são oportunidades para a requalificação total ou parcial das cidades. A Exposição do Mundo Português, em 1940, serviu para valorizar a zona ocidental, de Santo Amaro a Pedrouços/Restelo. Então, a fábrica de gás de Belém é transferida para a Quinta da Matinha, prefigurando o que viria a ser o grande complexo da SACOR. A Expo 98, para muitos, foi vista não só como um factor de promoção do País e da sua capital, mas sobretudo como um catalisador do processo de regeneração funcional e urbanística da Lisboa Oriental.

Neste contexto poderia assim repor-se o normal desenvolvimento urbano ribeirinho, que prevaleceu ao longo de dezanove dos vinte séculos de história da cidade de Lisboa. Poderia ser a recuperação da simetria poente-nascente. O desafio foi aceite e a obra está em curso. Aguardemos o futuro, com um voto, que é desejo e esperança: que a Expo 98 contribua para recuperar a centralidade, a grandeza e a simetria de Lisboa.

Breves Notas de Cronologia 1149 – O primeiro rei de Portugal doa à Mitra «todas as rendas e terras de Marvila que possuíam as mesquitas dos mouros».

Século XVI – O Poço do Bispo está aberto ao público.

1602 – No convento de S. Bento de Xabregas faleceu Frei António da Conceição, o Beato António.

1635 – D. António de Sousa Meneses perdeu um braço na luta naval contra os holandeses, próximo da ilha de Itamaracá. Viria a herdar de seu pai a Quinta, em Marvila, que se passaria a chamar do Braço de Prata.

Século XVIII – D. Tomás de Almeida, arcebispo de Lisboa, deixou de pagar foro à «Quinta de Marvila dos Marqueses de Abrantes».

1852 – Foi criado o concelho de Olivais, que seria extinto em 1886.

1864 – O Palácio da Mitra, do património dos Bens Nacionais, é adquirido pelo Marquês de Salamanca.

Acumulação e deriva

Desde o início da sua trajectória artística, nos anos finais de 1980, que o trabalho de João Paulo Feliciano se tem distinguido pela persistente exploração dos limites e possíveis intersecções entre as condições materiais e discursivas da prática artística e diferentes aspectos da cultura urbana e popular. O que é da arte e o que é da vida equivalem-se, o que é específico e o que é transversal complementam-se, predisposições de uma atitude conceptual e operativa disponível para projectar e experimentar um vasto campo de possibilidades criativas, que se comprova com o facto de o artista usar um espectro alargado de meios de expressão artística como a pintura, a escultura, a instalação, o vídeo, a luz, o som, o desenho, a performance, o texto, a arquitectura, a fotografia e as artes gráficas.

Com efeito, no universo artístico de Feliciano não existe particular interesse pelas retóricas específicas ou historicistas vinculadas a cada médium. Os meios interessam-lhe na medida em que permitem deslocar e reconverter as qualidades plásticas, as expectativas perceptivas e as condições fenomenológicas imanentes à experiência da arte. Os meios encadeiam-se, misturam-se, ajudam-se: por vezes, o vídeo permite expandir a pintura, o escultórico é simultaneamente fotográfico, o som é mediador da luz e da cor. Feliciano é o verdadeiro artista multimédia e multidisciplinar, figura característica de uma contemporaneidade que extrai parte do seu dinamismo da confusão e da diluição das especificidades, no entanto um tempo de proximidades, hibridações e prolongamentos lógicos que não impede que se continue a pensar na existência de condições peculiares a determinados modos da produção e recepção visual – constatação que este trabalho em fotografia tão exemplarmente demonstra.

Feliciano vive e trabalha há mais de uma década na zona de Xabregas, no Bairro da Madre de Deus. E foi precisamente esse contexto vivencial que deu origem, no final de 2015 (mais precisamente no dia 9 de Novembro), à série fotográfica Xabregas City.

Aquilo que poderiam ter sido duas ou três fotografias tiradas com o iPhone durante um habitual percurso a pé pela zona baixa de Xabregas, publicadas mais ou menos de imediato no Instagram e Facebook, deu origem a um ambicioso projecto fotográfico que iria durar um ano (até ao dia 22 de Novembro de 2016). Após essas primeiras fotografias, seguiram-se outras, com poucos dias de intervalo. Quase de imediato começaram os passeios com o objectivo específico de observar e fotografar tudo aquilo que pudesse ser motivo de interesse. Paralelamente, o ritmo de publicação das fotografias foi aumentando até chegar a várias por dia. A regularidade

e a diversidade de motivos e situações que Feliciano ia reproduzindo captou a atenção de um crescente número de «seguidores».

No início, os comentários de amigos, conhecidos e desconhecidos funcionaram como incentivo. Com o tempo passaram a ser um aspecto importante na forma como o projecto se foi desenvolvendo.

Por um lado, Feliciano ia construindo uma espécie de ensaio fotográfico em tempo (quase) real e, ao mesmo tempo, esse processo criativo ia sendo observado e comentado pelos «espectadores».

Progressão, simultaneidade, conectividade, sintomas de um novo paradigma de apresentação – de partilha – da produção artística.

Muito se falou nos últimos anos do fenómeno de superação tecnológica que ocorreu no campo da fotografia. Sublinha-se que todo um sistema de técnicas, métodos e equipamentos de produção fotográfica foi sendo substituído por uma outra superestrutura de modos e dispositivos (de base electrónica, ou digital, como se vulgarizou dizer) que mudaram e ampliaram de forma avassaladora as possibilidades de captação, edição e circulação da imagem.

Mas as consequências desta (r)evolução digital não se confinam às alterações desencadeadas por uma nova tipologia de produção fotográfica. Na verdade, os seus efeitos são ainda mais radicais se pensarmos no impacto que têm tido num plano societal mais vasto, constituindo-se como uma parte essencial de um novo paradigma comunicacional caracterizado pela profusão de fluxos de trocas e de partilhas de dados e de signos visuais.

Hoje, fotografamos com câmaras fotográficas, mas com maior frequência com smartphones. Tudo (imagens, palavras, momentos, lugares...) parece destinado à sua transcodificação cibernética. É um sistema que se organiza no primado da ubiquidade, facilidade processual, conectividade, extrema fluidez e circulação. O novo paradigma tecnológico da fotografia dirige-se para uma crescente simplificação dos saberes e processos necessários à utilização eficaz dos dispositivos de captação, edição e circulação da fotografia. É notório que a fotografia digital alterou profundamente o ofício da prática fotográfica. A proficiência técnica está agora à distância de um clique considerando uma infindável e impressionante pletora de opções técnicas e estéticas, pré-formatadas e pré-legitimadas.

A consequência mais evidente desta simplificação técnica (na perspectiva do utilizador) é a inelutável e radical desespecialização das práticas da fotografia e da figura do fotógrafo. Contudo, é igualmente notório que os desenvolvimentos tecnológicos têm proporcionado novas possibilidades na experiência e criatividade fotográficas.

Se a tecnologia e correlativos domínios de mediação são essenciais neste projecto, também é verdade que os seus fundamentos e motivações são bastante simples. Xabregas City funda-se primeiramente no gosto de o artista olhar em volta, percorrer sítios que conhece bem, descobrir outros que nunca percorreu com atenção, explorar as suas reverberações semânticas e estéticas. A maneira como Feliciano foi captando e coligindo estas imagens consubstancia a predisposição mundana e nómada da fotografia. São, pois, nítidas as razões que o conduziram para um projecto fotográfico.

O livro dá-nos a ver uma peculiar mistura entre documentação urbana, autobiografia, análise histórica e cultural, factografia e artisticidade – por outras palavras, uma experiência sobre as intertextualidades e as conexões entre o carácter concreto de cada assunto e as suas ressonâncias históricas, antropológicas, estéticas e simbólicas.

A grande maioria das fotografias foi realizada durante caminhadas. Fixemo-nos na experiência da caminhada. O percurso evidencia um processo, um modo de proceder a uma reflexão sobre a experiência do território, da memória e da imaginação. Os locais e os assuntos fotografados por Feliciano representam o actual, do mesmo modo que evocam a presença do passado, a oportunidade de contemplar ciclos de tempo (resquícios de uma paisagem genuína, etapas da ruralidade, o processo de industrialização desde o século XIX até às primeiras décadas do século XX). Como tal, a caminhada de Feliciano, muito para além da sua componente mais propriamente física, inscreve-se, acima tudo, numa certa possibilidade e responsabilidade de ver, sentir e pensar as condições de um território. Caminhar implica uma relação mais ancorada com o solo, e nesse sentido proporciona as condições para a afirmação de um espectador mais atento, pensativo e imaginativo. Por outro lado, a caminhada de Feliciano é um exercício de confrontação e entrosamento entre corpo e olho, em que o corpo lida com a materialidade do real, enquanto o olho toma o lugar de ponto de partida para o imaterial, para a deriva perceptiva, para o jogo artístico, para a especulação crítica.

A apreciação que o autor nos propõe sobre esta zona está fortemente relacionada com a noção de lugar, na estreita medida em que os lugares são depósitos de memórias e de acontecimentos do passado, que nos ajudam a compreender que o nosso tempo representa apenas um estrato de uma história imensa e imprevisível. Cada lugar é o resultado de uma diacronia, de um percurso de práticas individuais e colectivas, de sistemas de significação,

de valores e de relações que foram conferindo a um determinado espaço uma configuração peculiar e um passado irrepetível. Consequentemente, o lugar afigura-se também como um campo de linguagens, de imagens e de projecções, em que as características físicas e visíveis do território se cruzam com os seus ecos históricos, ficcionais, políticos e culturais.

Recentemente, a noção de lugar tem adquirido um novo fôlego, no seguimento do debate sobre os efeitos e causas dos fenómenos de globalização económica e cultural, cujos sinais indiciam uma crescente indiferenciação e homogeneização cultural, num movimento que tende para a monocultura (ocidental e capitalista) e para a correlativa desagregação das identidades locais. É frequente falar-se em espaço comum, em políticas transnacionais, ao mesmo tempo que se fala de fluxos, fronteiras, redes e mobilidade, que reforçam a ideia de estarmos perante uma nova e radical transição civilizacional, sob a influência das condições da acumulação flexível, da pós-modernidade e da compressão do espaço-tempo. Nesta perspectiva, tudo tende a submeter-se às condições e lógicas do capitalismo contemporâneo, o que tem implicado a reestruturação das relações e usos espaciais, o aumento da mobilidade de pessoas, da produção e das mercadorias, a intensificação dos transportes e a massiva disseminação das tecnologias electrónicas que, crescentemente, tornam irrelevante a posição geográfica do indivíduo, desde que tenha acesso a um ponto de conexão ao sistema. Porém, e em contracorrente, constata-se que estas tendências têm desencadeado e estimulado o aparecimento de comportamentos culturais e artísticos que assinalam um activo desejo de atenção e defesa de geografias singulares, assentes em experiências comuns e em valores como identidade, carácter, idiossincrasia, diferença e história.

Também por estas razões a noção de lugar tem configurado um desafio crucial a muitos artistas contemporâneos, no seu impulso por tornar visível e interpelar os modos de apropriação do espaço, de resgatar as incidências, os dilemas e os ecos de uma certa territorialidade. Esta tendência temática e especulativa tornou-se mais relevante no campo artístico desde as vanguardas artísticas da década de 1960, sobretudo sob a influência da obra e do pensamento do artista Robert Smithson, que apontou enfaticamente num pequeno texto («Proposal») de 1972, alguns anos depois de ter produzido essa obra seminal que foi A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic (1967), que «o artista deve sair do isolamento das galerias e dos museus e trazer para o presente uma consciência concreta do que existe na realidade, e não limitar-se

a apresentar abstracções e utopias […] devemos começar por desenvolver uma educação artística baseada nas relações com lugares específicos. Como nós vemos as coisas e os lugares não é uma matéria secundária, mas primária».1 Para Smithson caberia ao artista uma função primordial de convocar, propor e interrogar os sentidos do lugar, permitindo a sua frequentação emocional e crítica.

Tanto Smithson como outros artistas da sua geração interessados nas questões do lugar foram decisivos ao proporcionarem modos de aferição que indeferiram as visões dominantes da cultura, o que significou também uma tentativa de redescobrir as raízes de uma criatividade baseada na espontaneidade e na intersubjectividade, que valoriza o contingente e o efémero como motivos de uma indagação insólita do real que inevitavelmente suscita a desespecialização e reespecialização da prática artística. Hoje é evidente que estas expectativas continuam fortemente activas, e se o lugar persiste como tema vital e privilegiado para muitos artistas contemporâneos, é porque na sua inesgotável complexidade a noção de lugar proporciona um imenso campo de possibilidades para os artistas repensarem e redefinirem o papel do trabalho artístico, a natureza e o alcance experiencial da imagem, e a sua conexão com os fenómenos e contingências da vida em sociedade.

Xabregas City é um título ambivalente: junta a designação de uma área de Lisboa – assolada por décadas de desinvestimento público, ao ponto de se ter tornado uma das zonas mais social e urbanisticamente desqualificadas da cidade – com um anglicismo que parece atentar ao actual fenómeno de crescente cosmopolitização da cidade de Lisboa. Não obstante, a ambivalência é também uma característica que atravessa este território heterodoxo e repleto de contradições, que se encontra numa fase intermédia, transitória, entre um estado de fim de ciclo e a visão prospectiva de uma nova etapa, contemporânea, com os argumentos que habitualmente distinguem uma city.

No decurso das suas incursões peripatéticas por este pequeno e peculiar mundo, Feliciano foi recombinando modos de olhar e ver: do antropólogo e do artista, do residente e do alienígena, do flâneur e do trapeiro, do historiador e do crítico, como pontos de vista sujeitos a cruzamentos e oscilações por entre estados de percepção e de consciência que fatalmente sobrepõem realidade e ficção, objectividade e deriva, ironia, humor e sarcasmo.

Durante um ano, o artista fez mais de oito mil fotografias, de entre as quais publicou 1404 imagens, que agora são reproduzidas neste livro, divididas por 156 grelhas de nove imagens. A sequência

do livro é cronológica e foi sendo feita à medida que ia sendo feita a publicação. Sem estarem submetidas a nenhum movimento temático ou narrativo, as fotografias ensaiam relações, deslocamentos e remissões entre as diferentes imagens. Porém, é inevitável que a natureza serial deste trabalho suscite a possibilidade de desvelar uma história, uma narrativa, por entre as diferenciações e justaposições temáticas. Por outro lado, também podemos encarar cada conjunto de nove imagens como uma imagem maior, multifacetada.

Do livro sobressai também a pletora de assuntos: lugares, detalhes arquitectónicos, objectos, coisas abandonadas, ruínas, escombros, restos de edifícios, vegetação, graffitis, hortas, fábricas desactivadas, oficinas de actividades cada vez mais raras ou em extinção, habitações precárias, letreiros, sinais, toponímia, lixo, lojas, bairros sociais e vilas operárias, igrejas, monumentos, palacetes, antigas quintas, linhas e instalações ferroviárias, entre outros. São raras as imagens com pessoas, prevalecendo a atenção sobre o território, o edificado e a co-presença de múltiplos materiais e objectos. É um olhar não interventivo, que não pretende perturbar a vida dos habitantes. Pressente-se igualmente que o olhar desviado da presença humana é também um modo de incitar a um deslocamento para um espaço-tempo paradoxal e distendido, imune à natureza concreta dos gestos e das acções.

Feliciano interessa-se pelos lugares de Xabregas enquanto tema, mas também enquanto domínio peculiar de percepções, isto é, como duas dimensões absolutamente indissociáveis que sancionam a existência de uma relação fundamental entre o olhar e a realidade. Como é sabido, esta duplicidade é uma característica que atravessa toda a tradição da fotografia urbana, ramo fundamental da história da fotografia, como um conglomerado de géneros e de estilos, que vai desde os parâmetros objectivistas da representação topográfica até às aproximações subjectivistas que denunciam o movimento corporal do fotógrafo. Em Xabregas City encontramos todos esses modos e declinações que caracterizam a fotografia urbana. Planos estáveis, neutros e planimétricos, intercalados com variações pronunciadas do olhar, para cima ou para baixo, vistas diagonais ou oblíquas, ou seja, todas as possibilidades de comprometer o olhar maquinal com o olhar humano.

Em termos globais, o que vemos é um inventário sensível, uma colecção de coisas, fragmentos, detalhes, que habitam o nosso mundo. Os diferentes assuntos têm o mesmo valor – real, estético, simbólico – no interior desta constelação de imagens. A presença excessiva de imagens é coerente com a cacofonia do urbano e

com a voragem cumulativa que caracteriza a cultura contemporânea. Perante estas imagens podemos também discernir dois modos distintos de Feliciano entender e exercer a sua prática fotográfica: um modo explicitamente vinculado com o campo da arte, pelo menos subsumível a uma cultura prévia, a um saber cultivado, reflectido e conceptualizado que convoca e projecta razões e sentidos às representações (nestes casos, um olhar intuitivo e «plástico», que procura o desenho, o escultórico ou outras categorias ou tematizações intrínsecas ao campo da arte); e uma outra não necessariamente fora da arte, mas que é exercida como uma prática essencialmente instintiva e indisciplinada, despreocupada com a sua nomeação artística, simplesmente porque o seu alento deriva das contingências e oportunidades do momento, como indícios da vivência quotidiana, directa e informal, que estas imagens tão singularmente testemunham.

A pulsão quotidiana significa, neste caso, não apenas a demarcação de uma zona de trabalho mas também a assunção de uma atitude representacional que reflecte e aponta para um campo aberto a todo o tipo de incursões, permitindo todo o tipo de comportamentos susceptíveis de escrutinar e reconverter a natureza e o papel das artes visuais. Num âmbito mais específico, a pregnância do quotidiano está intimamente ligada à prática da fotografia, confirmando que uma das mais distintas e distintivas qualidades do fotográfico procede também desse rasgo específico de induzir significância estética e conceptual a assuntos e instantes aparentemente banais, irrelevantes e inesperados.

Para quem vive ou conhece Lisboa, Xabregas City compõe um imaginário que pode ser desconcertante. É uma parte menos conhecida (e certamente menos turística), e nesse sentido estas imagens compõem uma cartografia não oficial, em contracorrente com as representações genéricas e típicas que se foram conformando sobre a cidade de Lisboa. Esse carácter divergente que Xabregas City protagoniza advém também do modo como o artista vai encarando os sítios e assuntos que encontra. Em primeiro lugar, pela inconstância do olhar, variações de perspectiva, alterações entre planos em profundidade e outros que se concentram sobre motivos opacos (paredes, fachadas, chão...), alternância entre visões gerais e focagens a detalhes, mas também flutuações entre o velho e o novo, o destruído e o reconstruído, o trivial e o insólito, o bonito e o feio, o sério e o cómico. Ao percorrer as imagens subentende-se uma liberdade de movimentos e de aproximações que nos remete para a experiência da deriva, procedimento psicogeográfico pro-

posto pela Internacional Situacionista em meados do século XX. Pensada como um modo lúdico-construtivo de descobrir e decifrar o território, o procedimento da deriva contraria as fórmulas convencionais e superficiais de reconhecimento do espaço urbano, a favor de um conhecimento-movimento despertado por encontros involuntários que estimulam a participação do sujeito como figura actuante, sensível e participativa e não como mero transeunte (ou turista).

Do mesmo modo, as imagens de Feliciano configuram um método alternativo de reconstruir o conhecimento e o imaginário da realidade urbana de Lisboa. Neste contexto, Xabregas City demonstra como o meio urbano onde vivemos é motivador da deriva, que deve servir para instigar os habitantes a sair das suas rotas habituais, da sua rotina de movimentos, reafirmando a cidade como espaço de liberdade e a possibilidade de o sujeito exercer de forma independente e criativa a sua própria atenção e consciência sobre os aspectos estéticos, materiais e emocionais que habitam a paisagem urbana. Em suma, trata-se de potenciar aquilo que Maurice Blanchot sugeriu no texto «La parole quotidienne» (1959): «every individual carries in himself a set of reflections, of intentions, that is to say reticences, that commit him to an oblique existence».

O oblíquo é o espaço, o intervalo, por onde o indivíduo escapa do lado (auto)controlado da vida. Esses espaços e intervalos são a matéria de Xabregas City.

A propósito das expedições de João Paulo Feliciano a Xabregas City

A partir do período muçulmano o arrabalde ocidental vai adquirir mais importância económica e social, o que se acentua com Afonso III, que valoriza a Rua dos Mercadores e desloca o mercado das terças-feiras da porta da Alcáçova (actual Chão da Feira) para o Rossio. Dom Dinis continua a orientação do pai, construindo a muralha da Ribeira e promovendo a abertura da que será a grande rua de Lisboa até 1755, a Rua Nova (dos Ferros), paralela à linha da praia.

A expansão urbana dos séculos XV e XVI tem maior expressão a poente, tendência que se mantém nos séculos seguintes. Mas o aspecto mais relevante na forma que a cidade adquire até ao século XIX é o seu desenvolvimento linear: em 1611 noticia-se o primeiro serviço de transporte público em Lisboa: de barco e no percurso Belém-Xabregas. Em 1880 a cidade estende-se por vários quilómetros ao longo da praia, de poente a nascente, e na sua maior «espessura» termina no que é hoje, mais ou menos, a Rua das Pretas.

A expansão para o hinterland vai apoiar-se em dois eixos principais, que viriam a originar a Avenida da Liberdade e a Avenida Rainha Dona Amélia/Almirante Reis, que, de certo modo, prolongam para o interior a secular dicotomia nascente-poente.

Será o urbanismo do Estado Novo, com a acção de Duarte Pacheco, que procurará contrariar essa oposição, com a implantação do Instituto Superior Técnico, a Alameda, o Areeiro, a Praça de Londres, a Avenida de Roma e Alvalade.

Mas a nascente há um processo de sinal contrário, com sucessivas vagas de industrialização, apoiada no transporte aquático e no caminho-de-ferro, e a simultânea desvalorização urbana e o abandono da burguesia. O caminho-de-ferro vai desenhar e determinar o futuro do território com variadas instalações de interface caminho-de-ferro/água, com a atracção de indústrias e de armazéns, mas também com a desqualificação da qualidade ambiental… em consequência, pouco a pouco, vai-se perdendo a dimensão aristocrática – os palácios e palacetes degradam-se, dando lugar a conglomerados de habitação colectiva, misturada com armazéns, lojas e oficinas, quando não a antecâmaras de bairros de lata como no caso do Bairro Chinês.

Num inquérito que levámos a cabo nos liceus de Lisboa nos anos 1970, era patente a oposição nascente-poente, e nos mapas mentais dos alunos inquiridos a Avenida Almirante Reis funcionava como uma barreira, constituindo o território a nascente um enorme vazio, com ausência de informação – topográfica e funcional.

Como o escreveu Oliveira Martins, «Pelo Tejo o Portugal marítimo abraça o Portugal agrícola, fundindo numa as duas fisionomias típicas da Nação. Rio acima, o Alentejo de um lado, a Beira do outro, por esta forma se comunicam com a população marítima do litoral». O Tejo, ao longo de séculos, até ao advento do caminho-de-ferro, drenou para o porto de Lisboa uma bacia económica mais ampla do que a sua bacia hidrográfica em Portugal – produtos da agricultura e pecuária, da mineração e da transformação de variadas matérias-primas (cinzas, carvão, sabões...) desciam o Tejo por um integrado sistema de transportes – dorso de animal, carroças, flutuações nos afluentes e a montante no interior de Espanha, por jangadas e finalmente em barcos de tonelagem crescente à medida que a foz (e as marés...) estava mais próxima.

Sem o Tejo, Lisboa poderia ser um porto de pesca, eventualmente um porto oceânico, voltado para fora, mas nunca o pólo de comando de um vasto território, o íman que permitiu a configuração do estado-nação a que muito cedo correspondeu Portugal.

Lisboa e o rio Tejo deram um contributo decisivo para a unidade e para a individualidade de Portugal: as gentes e as mercadorias descem e sobem o rio, onde convergem estradas e caminhos, além de outros rios navegáveis; são assim viabilizados os mercados locais e regionais e definem-se bases económicas específicas que assim se afirmam ao longo dos séculos. Estabelecem-se e fortalecem-se as relações comerciais além da terra, na direcção do Mediterrâneo, do mar do Norte e do Báltico. Pela navegação fluvial difunde-se um urbanismo ribeirinho que ajuda à construção da unidade cultural da fronteira a Lisboa.

Neste processo está integrada Lisboa, cidade linear, que se prolonga pela faixa ribeirinha oriental, e os transportes foram sempre marcando os conteúdos e a forma desse desenvolvimento.

O caminho-de-ferro sobrepõe-se ao rio e vai competir com o transporte fluvial, conquistando as suas clientelas – no Entroncamento e nas envolventes de Vila Nova da Barquinha e de Atalaia, a competição é mais acesa e a companhia de caminhos-de-ferro vai ao ponto de comprar barcos (que inutiliza) e empregar os barqueiros para eliminar a concorrência.

Desde muito cedo que se desenhou uma oposição entre uma Lisboa a poente e uma Lisboa a nascente. Já o crescimento arrabaldino dos muçulmanos definiu uma Alfama piscatória e garimpeira (Adiça) a leste e um arrabalde mais comercial e de artesãos a poente.

Nos anos 1940 chegaram as ideias e os projectos do planeamento contemporâneo, que continuavam a entregar a Lisboa Oriental ao trabalho – indústria, logística, habitação. Começaram pela faixa ribeirinha, onde a cidade neotécnica se sobrepôs aos farrapos moribundos da frágil cidade paleotécnica. Os novos aterros para as novas indústrias permitiram a recuperação do eixo linear que percorre a cidade de poente a nascente, de Algés a Cabo Ruivo.

No hinterland, onde o Município fez grandes aquisições de solo rústico para urbanizar, tiveram lugar sucessivas experiências urbanísticas, enquanto ecos dos vários paradigmas que se impuseram na Europa ao longo do século XX, da cidade-jardim ao funcionalismo e ao retomar da cidade linear na 2ª metade do século; havendo ainda oportunidade para algumas experiências de cariz assistencial e terceiro-mundista.

Do mesmo modo sucederam-se as experiências de arquitecturas que proporcionaram, no bom tempo, alguma discussão em torno dos múltiplos problemas que se colocam face à carência de alojamento para as classes mais desfavorecidas.

Como resultado destes processos espaçotemporais, com diversos enquadramentos económicos e sociais, o território da Lisboa Oriental oferece, em cada travessia que se faça, verdadeiras inversões estratigráficas, cavalgamentos dos usos do solo e permanentes conflitos.

AS IMAGENS DE UMA LEITURA O inquérito-expedição levado a cabo por João Paulo Feliciano na Lisboa Oriental e que está sintetizado neste conjunto de fotografias abre-nos múltiplas janelas para aquele espaço fascinante, encriptado nas suas complexas geometrias. É um fim na medida em que é uma síntese, uma visão poética, domínio da abordagem artística, mas é também um princípio (vários princípios) para novas viagens, pesquisas, reconstruções de modelos.

Consequência do ecossistema, da paisagem com luz e do olhar, nestas fotografias de João Paulo Feliciano sente-se uma serenidade oriental, que nos transporta para lá das cores e das formas.

São patentes as narrativas poéticas, que não só proporcionam leituras como experiências. São fotografias para serem visitadas e viajadas.

Através deste aturado mapeamento é possível percorrer um extenso e sinuoso percurso histórico que conduziu os espaços da Lisboa Oriental a situações contrastantes: repositório de arcaísmos, emergência de novidades, promessas de inovações. Tudo configurando uma paisagem atípica que não é possível incluir em qualquer categoria das classificações disponíveis: nem rural, nem urbana, nem industrial ou pós-industrial. Será protoneourbana?

Necessariamente pós-urbana, mas que não se pode considerar anurbana, pois tem, em amostras muito fragmentadas, todos os caminhos que podem levar à urbanidade. É uma paisagem que permite, e até exige, uma variedade de chaves para a sua leitura e descoberta. Desde logo impõe-se a abordagem cinematográfica, como é ilustrado com exemplaridade pelas fotografias de João Paulo Feliciano. As deambulações por estes territórios de desperados, de múltiplas espacialidades, levam-nos ao neo-realismo italiano, mas também aos cenários derivados da pulp fiction, de tal forma que por vezes temos a sensação de visitar os depósitos dos grandes estúdios de cinema em Hollywood. De resto, a leitura pode ser orientada para a procura de cenários para filmes vários: das utopias às distopias, da nova urbe à cidade da ferrugem.

Fugitivos e criativos Esta poderia ser uma das entradas para este fototerritório, um espaço reconstruído a partir da câmara fotográfica. Amiúde encontramos as marcas dos que foram empurrados, escorraçados doutros territórios e encontraram aqui refúgio, numa região de transição, em trânsito não se sabe para onde nem para quê, aproximando-se de outras plataformas transitórias; como nas centrais rodoviárias ou nas estações ferroviárias, aguarda-se um veículo para algures, para um futuro, mas onde muitas vezes se acaba por ficar reconstruindo o seu próprio espaço, que assim vai ganhando lugaridade.

São também frequentes os sinais da criatividade de outros transitários lançados na busca de um futuro que sentem embebido neste solo que por vezes cheira a terra prometida, mais uma Nova Califórnia.

Que farei eu com estas imagens?

Tanta coisa! Desde logo um fantástico atlas de apoio aos estudos urbanos, na sua riqueza multidisciplinar. Pois aqui está quase tudo: o antes e o depois, o passado e o futuro da cidade e das gentes.

Manual enciclopédico que explica e demonstra a flora, a natureza, as edificações, os sagrados e os profanos, as cores – coradas e descoradas, as tecnologias, a indústria e a agricultura, os trabalhos e os lazeres, incluindo o trabalho do lazer. A hidráulica e a vinícola, as navegações e os transportes terrestres, a guerra e a paz, os sonhos e os pesadelos: «Débora ama Zé Manel», «puta deixa Meu Marido».

«Até me custa dizer, quando aqui cheguei, saí em Braço de Prata. Ao ver a barraquita que ele tinha, encostei-me às tábuas e pensei: “Para onde eu vim. Daqui poderão partir novos caminhos, daqui poderão nascer novos itinerários.

V I N H E TA S Hortas e quintas A proximidade da cidade – o mercado, a estrutura geológica, a existência de um aquífero interessante para a abertura de poços que se revelaram muito produtivos facilitou a produção hortícola, daí as notícias de almuinhas desde a Idade Média, cuja produção podia chegar à cidade, ao Cais da Ribeira ou a outro, pelo transporte fluvial.

Assim, os múltiplos vestígios arqueológicos das hortas, que foram a base das quintas que precederam os grandes projectos urbanísticos de Chelas e de Olivais Sul, entroncam nesses antepassados, nas almuinhas que pelo Vale de Chelas desciam até Xabregas… e de que as actuais hortas urbanas e hortas sociais não conseguem recuperar a memória, nem topográfica nem funcional.

A quinta é uma forma de ocupação do território típica do habitat periurbano, que em Lisboa tem um desenvolvimento que

remonta ao período da colonização romana e que observou os períodos de maior expansão do século XVI ao século XIX. As quintas eram espaços de prolongamento da cidade, de refúgio dos malefícios urbanos (da peste à tuberculose), de vilegiatura, mas também de produção agrícola e pecuária: do regular abastecimento diário (dos produtos hortícolas ao leite) a alguma produção de azeite e de cereal e sempre à produção de vinho do termo, precedido no calendário pela água-pé.

Este povoamento formado por quintas, de espaços murados, fechados por portões imponentes, era servido por uma rede de vias, em geral calçadas com pedra basáltica em que predominava a designação muçulmana de azinhaga, e comandavam as estradas, que, frequentemente, quando entravam nos povoados, passavam a ser designadas por Rua Direita (Rua Direita de Marvila, Rua Direita dos Olivais…).

Ora este sistema começou a ser corroído a partir de fora com o caminho-de-ferro e a correlativa industrialização: por um lado, as externalidades físicas (fumos, cheiros, lixos) que degradam o ambiente; por outro lado, a pressão da procura de alojamento barato para os operários que afluíam do Portugal Rural e que se adaptavam facilmente às condições rústicas que essas quintas podiam oferecer pela adaptação de estábulos e de celeiros, ou de outros anexos da residência principal… que, muitas vezes, com o declínio da agricultura e a desvalorização da quinta como espaço da burguesia urbana, também eram adaptados a alojamento colectivo… na sequência, já no século XX, como incremento da imigração dos campos, também o espaço agricultado será ocupado por bairros de lata… bairros de lata que em muitos casos são designados pelo nome das quintas: Quinta do Marquês de Abrantes, Quinta dos Alfinetes, Quinta…

Deste povoamento multifacetado das quintas restam inúmeros vestígios, desintegrados, formando uma autêntica dispersão arqueológica, com grande número de depósitos de superfície em que é muito difícil desenhar uma estratigrafia aceitável. Além de escavações são necessárias análises aturadas através dos muros das quintas, para encontrar cacos e muitos outros restos de cerâmicas, fósseis de diferentes andares e eras, cantarias, ladrilhos, azulejos e rebocos. Depois há ainda a arqueologia viva, o que resta de uma agricultura minuciosa e sábia que remonta aos romanos e é enriquecida no período muçulmano, que deixou vasta terminologia neste sistema que ainda perdura: noras, azinhagas, almácegas, alfobres, alcatruzes, alfenim… mas só subindo a um alto ou

trepando a um muro nos apercebemos do legado agrícola que perdura activo, aqui e além enriquecido por novos contributos em que avultam os oriundos de Cabo Verde, com maior saliência para as canas açucaradas, matéria-prima para o grogue que vão produzir algures. Hortas urbanas, hortas clandestinas, hortas da saudade e hortas da necessidade, onde ainda se escondem os genes desta história agrária milenar que nasceu e se mantém na sombra da cidade.

Arqueologia silvícola Os olivais, que ocupam uma posição central na toponímia da Lisboa Oriental, ainda são hoje uma presença constante ao longo de todo o território, apesar da rasoira que constitui o processo de ocupação por rodovias e habitação social ao longo das últimas seis décadas.

As oliveiras, que têm aqui seguramente direitos de antiguidade que podem muito bem remontar há dois milénios, trazidas e plantadas ou tão-só enxertadas por gentes da Grécia ou da Fenícia, resistem encostadas aos muros das antigas quintas, no meio dos vazios, que além do mais são também formas de resistência do solo, da memória da paisagem e da biodiversidade. Resistem na natural degenerescência em zambujeiros, refugiadas em encostas e valados. E, absurdo dos absurdos, encontram-se ainda como abrilhantamento paisagístico, transplantadas do Alqueva, em recantos do chamado espaço público.

Também perdidas, sem reconhecimento do lugar a que pertenceram, outras árvores, correlativas do antigo povoamento das quintas, aguardam um olhar responsável que as aproxime, que lhes confira um papel nas novas paisagens em configuração. São palmeiras – as que resistem à mais recente moléstia; são os raríssimos ulmeiros, típicos da Lisboa rústica de outros tempos, até que uma doença fatal os dizimou sem que ninguém os protegesse; são os freixos, as araucárias, os choupos, os ciprestes, todos constituintes da memória desta Lisboa, que prefere(?) as plantas que os hortos lhe fornecem em cada momento, desde que cresçam depressa.

Património – abandono e esquecimento A Lisboa Oriental, como é patente em vários levantamentos e estudos publicados, oferece um riquíssimo património edificado, com valor histórico e cultural relevante. Talvez ainda com maior incidência do que em qualquer outra área urbana do País, estão patentes a degradação e o abandono desse património.

A situação é particularmente gravosa no edificado do espaço rural, mormente nas quintas, mas onde também será necessário reter outras estruturas como os muros, as calçadas, as infra-estruturas hidráulicas – poços, noras, fontes, aquedutos, chafarizes, lavadouros, tanques, almácegas.

Do mesmo modo, há um rico património, que pode passar despercebido, de habitação operária, nalgumas tipologias bem representadas e que ainda persistem: vilas (ilhas), prédios de habitação colectiva, correntezas que marcam as penetrações do urbano pelo espaço rural.

Os ciclos urbanos e a reutilização de espaços e de infra-estruturas A adaptação da infra-estrutura a diferentes usos de acordo com os ciclos económicos é uma constante na relação entre os humanos e os territórios. Este dinamismo é particularmente activo na cidade e na sua envolvente imediata.

Tais processos têm mais continuidade e prevalência no tempo se não se verificarem alterações de grande escala no uso do solo.

A Lisboa Oriental oferece um rico portefólio destas dinâmicas e situações contrastantes.

As «contaminações» e os conflitos de usos e de procuras diversas caracterizam o processo urbano-territorial desde o século XIX e chegam até nós. Os grandes «cortes», com a rápida fixação de um novo paradigma de uso do solo ocorrem a partir dos anos 1950 com os superprojectos urbanísticos de Olivais Sul e de Chelas e, no final do século XX, com a Expo 98/Parque das Nações.

Mas enquanto no segundo caso há uma limpeza radical do «passivo», esquecendo-se para sempre o vazadouro, o ferro-velho, a ferrugem, o alojamento degradado e temporário, os fumos e outros miasmas, nos novos bairros a gestação foi lenta, foram e vieram gerações de moradores, de diferentes matrizes geográficas e sociais, em procuras contrastadas de povoamento, gerando paisagens

desequilibradas, em que os ambientes distópicos ocorrem lado a lado com mostruários de arquitectura contemporânea, por vezes configurando atitudes de experimentalismo.

Assim, o «miolo» destes grandes conjuntos residenciais oferece uma enorme riqueza sociocultural, resultado das origens diversas e de interessantes processos de conflito, aproximação e construção de novas identidades, que se reflectem numa paisagem que só de longe pode parecer uniforme.

Mas a maior diversidade de intervenções socioculturais «espontâneas» ocorre nas margens, nas superfícies de contactos, nos recantos e retalhos que as grandes intervenções deixaram e esqueceram e, inclusive, nos espaços muito na moda e que simplificadamente se designam como vazios, mas que encerram realidades distintas ou, por outras palavras, observaram distintos processos de enchimento.

As margens com os bairros dos anos 1930-40, que viveram um quarto de século de isolamento, de costas voltadas para o lado de fora, ligados à cidade consolidada pelo cordão umbilical do autocarro da Carris: Praça do Chile-Encarnação, Praça do Chile-Madre de Deus…

As superfícies de contacto com a indústria moderna, na maior parte dos casos já obsoleta, aberta à reciclagem – para serviços, para habitação, para logística ou esperando através da adaptação a oficinas e ateliers de variadas artes.

Ou as margens entre vivos e mortos, ou seja, os espaços de contacto com os cemitérios, tão maltratados ou só esquecidos pelos urbanistas, pelos políticos, pelos cidadãos, e que quando se desqualificam podem gerar refúgios, arcaísmos, repulsa, mas que não são vazios…

Os vazios As margens Temos documentação sobre os encontros gerados nas margens da Lisboa Oriental, dos imigrantes rurais vindos do Minho, de Trás-os-Montes, do Douro, das Beiras ou do Alentejo ou do pequeno burguês Artur Corvelo, com quem Eça nos retrata tão bem a entrada na metrópole… até ao pobre rapaz com saco às costas, que nos anos 1930, empurrado pela crise, pela fome, e sem hipótese de emigrar para o Brasil vem procurar um conterrâneo que trabalhava já numa quinta, ali ao lado do Armador… por isso desceu do comboio-correio no apeadeiro de Braço de Prata… para encetar assim o seu longo percurso na grande cidade, a partir das margens… começou logo a trabalhar numa daquelas quintas que alimentavam Lisboa, talvez na das Conchas, o que ajudou ao milagre da integração!

Outra imagem, poderosa e bem documentada, é a passagem da cidade moderna, modernista e consolidada, para esse território desconhecido, agro-rural, no princípio da degeneração, e que viria a ser integrado na «Malha de Chelas», o que nos é mostrado no filme Verdes Anos. Um espaço em transição que fora umas décadas antes vivido pelos lisboetas da boémia ou constituíra, tão-só, o passeio domingueiro das famílias – o espaço do ir para fora de portas, das tascas e retiros da Azinhaga da Fonte do Louro, do Vale Formoso de Cima ou, mais longe, dos Olivais… era também o passeio/devaneio de namorados.

É na chamada Malha de Chelas, pitoresca designação que radica na urbanística dos anos 1960, que mais se tem «escavado» na busca e aprofundamento dos vazios urbanos. Além das abordagens sociológicas e antropológicas, são também interessantes as abordagens experimentadas pelas artes visuais, de que o projecto Lisboa – Capital do Nada é talvez o exemplo mais profícuo.

Numa manhã, aí por 1969-1970, andava eu em indagações geográficas e arquitectónicas por Olivais Sul quando na orla de um amplo espaço devoluto, que o plano urbanístico indicava como futuro centro de comércio e serviços, vi chegar um grupo de homens, mulheres e crianças – como num filme italiano dos anos 1940-50, com enxadas, sacos de serapilheira e cestos. Pararam, tiraram uns pontos (alinhamentos) e desataram a cavar, cavar e cavar, com vontade, genica e entusiasmo. Elas abriam os sacos de onde retiravam batatas que recortavam (pelos olhos…) e os troços assim obtidos iam para os cestos, eram a «semente».

A meio da tarde começaram a semear (ao rego…). Ao pôr-do-sol já aquele vazio estava bonito e produtivo, à espera do comércio e dos serviços que só chegariam umas décadas depois, primeiro com um supermercado-centro comercial e mais tarde com o shopping, agora apoiado no metro.

Uma incubadora – ou viveiro Neste espaço intricado, com tempos e geografias em cavalgamentos, existe um sem-número de projectos e ideias que tanto podem estiolar como poderão germinar e ganhar a luz do dia, in loco ou muito longe, tal é a energia daquela geografia relacional: Marvila-Nova Iorque, Braço de Prata-Dubai, Capitão Leitão-Bogotá, Chelas-Antiguidades-Áfricas-…, Olivais, Londres, Poço do Bispo, São Francisco, Dublin, Miami, … o Mundo. É um território fragmentado ou até pulverizado, no espaço e no tempo, carente de articulações, de relações, de proximidades, de densidade.

Mas ao mesmo tempo um lugar propício ao sonho, e nesse sentido mantém-se ligado aos tempos da imigração para as fábricas ou tão-só para os trabalhos da cidade moderna, ou seja, volta a ser terra de promissão.

Oriente oriental É com o Mar da Palha, atravessado pelo Tejo a caminho do oceano, que este território de Lisboa se torna mais oriental. Talvez por isso foi o derradeiro destino, o último cais, para muitos navegantes dos mares do Sul e do Oriente.

Ao fim da tarde, em todas as estações do ano, iluminado pelo crepúsculo vespertino, grave e silencioso, o Mar da Palha, pardacento e luminoso, intenso e sonolento, com alguns barcos, mas sem navegação, é um cenário para os grandes rios orientais – Ganges, Irauadi, Mecão, das Pérolas, Yangtzé, Huang Ho…

On East Lisbon

The Ocean, the Tagus, and the Sea of Straw — three accounts to explain Lisbon The locale of Lisbon is defined by the confluence of the Tagus with the ocean, the riverway and the maritime path. The wide space where they all meet, the Sea of Straw, is an extremely small Mediterranean on the Atlantic coast, and has attracted men and provided them wealth, in successive updates that History and Geographies have determined and enabled.

After a long course of over a thousand kilometers, passing through diverse lands and peoples, the Tagus ends up in a kind of delta, amongst tiny islands the locals call mouchões, only to run together again into a narrow bottleneck, which makes the final connection between the great ocean and the Sea of Straw.

Geomorphologically, the margins of this sea inlet are asymmetrical. Partly due to this, but owing largely to the actions of mankind, they are also asymmetric in their social and economic landscapes.

On the less jagged north bank, the tributaries Ribeira de Alcântara, downstream, and Trancão river, upstream, frame the site where the city was originally founded, between the valleys of Alcântara and Xabregas. From there, the city grew in a linear path along the water’s edge, projecting new human settlements on the two coasts of this Mediterranean, up the streams and bays along which navigation was possible.

With its undulating margins, the left bank would organize itself along a string of settlements, always taking advantage of the benefits bestowed by the relationship between water and land, and by the proximity to trading places, cities, and ports — using these factors to expand a network of contacts and opportunities.

On this left bank, throughout the last two thousand years, industries have come and gone — extracting gold, glass, salt, ceramics, fish and preserves, milling, cork production, slaughterhouses, naval shipyards, industrial chemicals, steel mills, electronics, automotive, and many other industries seizing upon the opening and closing of windows of opportunity.

Soon to be united by two bridges, these two river banks have always been bridged by human relations, both material and spiritual. If businessmen understood and practiced this, poets knew how to point it out. Religions have left the strongest and most enduring influences: the Cape of Espichel was the site of a great Muslim pilgrimage, attended by the moors who inhabited the

western (to Sintra) and northern (to Lumiar) territories around Lisbon, this pilgrimage was “christianized” but, to this day, we owe the use of its votive candles to the original procession; the Lady of Atalaia, in the ancient lands of Ribatejo, today within the boundaries of the municipality of Montijo — right at the exit of the new bridge — was until recently the pilgrimage site for the people of East Lisbon, from Alfama to Marvila, as described to us by Fialho de Almeida. Now, as the documents decree, D. Afonso Henriques, donated to the Mitra of Lisbon “all the leases and lands of Marvila belonging to the Mosques of the Moors”! Perhaps not by mere coincidence, the Herdade da Mitra, which was owned by the Archbishops of Lisbon until the 15th century, in the 16th century became the property of the Morgado de Pancas and Atalaia!...

In the earliest times, from Roman days to the dawn of Portugal, the western swath of the city and its immediate surroundings, oriented towards the ocean side, had greater economic and architectural prosperity. Nevertheless, a symmetry started emerging in the Middle Ages: from Alcântara (Calvário) to Marvila, there followed, in balanced counterpoints from the central nucleus, the convents, palaces, and peri-urban manor houses. The Trancão river, navigable, “extends” the urban area to Tojais and Loures, where the great dignitaries of the Clergy and of the Nobility built their palaces, such as those of Mitra, Monteiro-Mor, and Correio-Mor.

A recurrent vocation as a logistical platform Today forming a single metropolitan area, the peninsulas of Lisbon and of Setúbal are valuable assets for the maritime affirmation of the European Union. On the finisterre of Europe, an important port infrastructure with an oceanic tradition can play the role of a large-scale logistics platform, not only for Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, but for the whole of Europe.

Potentiated by the recent advances in the field of telecommunications, the development of the means of transport by land, and railway connections in particular, may confer upon the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula and its significant human resources the potential for dispersing industry and other activities that now are localized in the most populated areas of Europe. On the other hand, this can also open doors to third-party investors that require the support of maritime transports.

Bottom line, what is necessary is to renew what already is here, bringing up to date what was the vocation of Lisbon at the time of its greatest affirmation among the conspectus of European cities: from the 15th century to the 17th century, Lisbon was an advanced logistical platform for Europe. Not only in relationship to the Americas, but also to Africa and the Orient, all the while being complementary and synergic with other European cities of the Mediterranean and the Baltic, but with a greater emphasis on what would come to be the nerve center of Europe: London, Paris, Randstad… today, and, in the past, London, Amsterdam, and Antwerp.

A persistent toponomy The Sea of Straw is more than merely an inlet where the Tagus enters, slowly, through its islets (mouchões). In the coming and going of the tides, it really is a Sea, and for this it has an adequate topology. Among all the rest, emerges Cabo Ruivo, heavily marked by the later stages of industrialization, and monumentally defined by the refinery tower and the petrochemical pipelines. Cabo Ruivo has long continued to be associated to SACOR/PETROGAL… By land, along the river’s edge other topologies arose, whose original explanation keeps getting increasingly distant: Braço de Prata (Silver Arm), one of the maritime heroes who could have spent his final days in peace on the calm banks of Chelas or Marvila, facing the sea (albeit a small one), just like his peer Fernão Mendes Pinto, who from his farm in Pragal (Almada) must have dreamt, upon hearing the whispering winds and the crashing waves of Caparica, with the terrifying storms from the South and Eastern Seas. However, D. António de Sousa Mendes, who had lost his arm in 1635 while defending the Brazilian coastline from the Dutch, returned to the farm he had inherited from his father — which ultimately would take the name of his prosthesis, eternalizing him. Again, he set out to sea, first to India, and then to Brazil, where he would die in the late 17th century.

Olive groves were common, as were vineyards, in the rural countryside surrounding Lisbon — curiously, the olive groves are significantly more represented in the toponomy than the vineyards: Olival Basto, Olival do Santíssimo, Rua da Oliveira, Largo da Oliveirinha...

Finally, the Church has been a strong presence since the first days of our country, and the Convent of Chelas deserves a special

mention. Nevertheless, what is most interesting is the appreciation that the bishops of Lisbon had for the eastern reaches of the Tagus, which were accessible by boat… Because of this, they kept making improvements to their “residence” in Marvila until D. Tomás de Almeida ordered the construction of the current Palácio da Mitra, in the 18th century. Already in the 16th century, the Poço do Bispo (in English, the Well of the Bishop) earned its name as the source of water for the local population. Eventually, the place became crowded with wine warehouses and, to this day, the “Well of the Bishop” is better known for its wine than for its water... The term “Mitra” (in English, miter, ceremonial headdress of catholic bishops) would also have its original meaning sidetracked. This happened in the 1930s, due to the actions of one of Salazar’s ministers of the Interior, Colonel Lopes Mateus, who ordered the construction of a large shelter in the open lands destined to house or, to be more accurate, to hide the vagabonds and undesirables from the city whenever Lisbon received illustrious guests. For many people, the term “Mitra” is no longer associated with the elegant Episcopalian palace, which today belongs to the municipality, but rather recalls that sorrowful shelter.

Nobilitation vs industrialization The “nobilitation” of the former “lands of the Moorish mosques”, and, in fact, of all East Lisbon, was followed by a process of “denobilitation,” the consequence of the introduction of the railroad and of the successive waves of industrialization — since the dawning of the steam engine, up to the petrochemical refineries of the post-war era.

The introduction of new infrastructures, roadways, trains, port expansions and industries was accompanied by successive demographic shifts among the populations of the Lower Tagus.

If, on the one hand, it received an influx of new residents from the surrounding regions, from the Beiras, Trás-os-Montes, and the Alentejo, on the other hand, it was progressively abandoned by the wealthier upper classes.

Planning and spontaneous occupation intersect in East Lisbon After the first waves of industrialization, which were void of any notion of sequencing or urban planning, and merely “ordered”

based on the accessibility to rail and to the waterways, the municipality would finally draft a project of urban planning in the late 1920s, which would reach maturity two decades later. Raging different scales, the planned interventions would consolidate the industrial dimension of the riverside east of Santa Apolónia, extending it beyond the county limits.

To this “calling,” from the 1940s until present day, the concept was added of creating a residential haven in the hinterlands. This would give rise to several neighborhoods that were planned as public initiatives: Encarnação, Madre de Deus, Olivais Norte, Olivais Sul, Chelas, which successively obeyed the various urbanistic paradigms observed in the distinct periods of their construction.

To promote these residential groupings, the municipality initially made large acquisitions of land, which allowed it to act efficiently.

However, prior industrial structures and facilities, the premature abandonment of agricultural investments, and the progressive degradation of the landscape and the environment, would come to favor spontaneous occupations, most of which on public lands but also on private properties. These occupations gave rise to shanty towns, of which the famous Bairro Chinês, in the Quinta do Marquês de Abrantes (which remained within the lands of the old farm of the Archbishop) constitutes a typical and longstanding example.

The decline of industrial and maritime activity accentuates the degradation of the landscape and deepens the process of social marginalization New port infrastructures and industrial installations, from the petrochemical refinery to small and mid-size “clean” operations, often moving from the port area contiguous to the city center, have created a new landscape, vivacious and modern, in contrast with the old “back doors” of the shacks, houses, and the annexes of the old farms that had been transformed into residences for the workers.

The failure of the port of Lisbon to win its place as a significant commercial hub and the subsequent decline of the industrial activity originated this degradation of the landscape. At the same time, in the early 1970s, the largest social housing project in the country starts being built in Chelas, extending from the riverside’s industrial area up to the airport — which has become increasingly less associated with the industrial belt. Chelas would never be the large neighborhood for workers it was designed to be, positioned

in an urban-port-industrial context, but would rapidly evolve into an enormous social ghetto. Its “cellular” construction and a range of architectonic concepts transformed it into a closed space, both experientially and perceptually, from the inside or the outside.

Upstream, the decline was sped up by the breakdown of the port installations and the bankruptcy of industries, the closure of the remaining businesses, and, on top of that, the construction of an enormous municipal dumping ground!

Expo 98 as a pretext and instrument of urban regeneration Large-scale urban interventions are opportunities for the total or partial requalification of cities. The Portuguese World Expo, in 1940, was used to add value to the western region of the city, from Santo Amaro to Pedrouços/Restelo. As such, the gas factory in Belém was transferred to the Quinta da Matinha, which would later become the large SACOR complex.

For many, Expo 98 was seen not only as an opportunity to promote the nation and its capital, but, and above all, as a catalyst for the functional and urbanistic regeneration of East Lisbon.

In this context, this was an opportunity to go back to a normal development of the riverside, which prevailed along nineteen of the twenty centuries of Lisbon’s history. One of the possibilities was to recover the east-west symmetry. This challenge was accepted and the project is under way. We await the future, with one hopeful wish: that Expo 98 will help us recover the centrality, the greatness and the symmetry of Lisbon.

Accumulation and Drift

Since the early years of his career, in the late 1980s, the work of João Paulo Feliciano has been marked by the persistent exploration of the limits and possible nexus between the material and discursive conditions of an artistic practice and different aspects of urban and popular culture. Art and life equate themselves, their specificities and intersections complement each other, predispositions of a conceptual and operative attitude that is open to project and experiment upon a vast field of creative possibilities, as it is made evident by the artist’s use of a wide range of artistic expressions, such as painting, sculpture, installation, video, light, sound, drawing, performance, writing, architecture, photography, and graphic arts.

Within Feliciano’s artistic universe, one cannot find a particular interest in the specific or historicist rhetorics associated with each medium. The appeal they have over him arises from the possibilities they offer in shifting and reshaping the plastic qualities, the perceptual expectations and the phenomenological conditions immanent to the experience of art. Mediums intertwine, they combine and complement each other: sometimes, video bolsters painting, the sculptural is also photographic, sound acts as a carrier of light and color. Feliciano is a true multimedia and multidisciplinary artist, an idiosyncratic figure of a contemporaneity that extracts some of its dynamism from the blurring and dilution of specificities but that is also a time of proximities, hybridizations and logical extensions that do not hinder a continued reflection on the peculiar conditions of certain modes of visual production and reception — a realization so exemplary demonstrated by this photographic work.

Feliciano has been living and working in Xabregas, in Bairro da Madre de Deus, for over a decade. Starting in the last months of 2015 (November 9, to be precise), the series Xabregas City was born out of his experiences there. What could have been just a couple pictures taken with his iPhone and immediately posted in Instagram and Facebook during one of his walks in downtown Xabregas, transformed instead into an ambitious photographic project that spanned for over a year (ending on November 22, 2016). After those first photos, others followed suit. Almost immediately, Feliciano started ambling around in search of things to observe and photograph that might be of interest to him. In parallel, the pace of his publications grew to the point he was posting several images a day. The regularity and diversity of the motifs and situations Feliciano was portraying attracted the attention of an increasing number of “followers.” At first, he was motivated by

the comments of friends, acquaintances and strangers. With time, they acquired a fundamental role in the development of the project.

Feliciano was building a kind of photographic essay in (almost) real-time, while his creative process was being watched and commented by the “spectators.” Progression, simultaneity, connectivity, all symptoms of a new paradigm of presentation — of sharing — of artistic production.

In the last years, much has been said about the phenomenon of technological progress in the field of photography. An entire system of techniques, methods and photographic equipment is being replaced by another superstructure of modes and devices (operating in an electronic, or digital, substrate) that have fundamentally transformed and expanded the possibilities of image capture, edition, and dissemination. But the consequences of this digital (r)evolution are not limited to the changes produced by a new typology of photographic production. Truly, its effects are even more radical when we take into account the impact they have had in a wider societal plane, materializing as an essential part of a new communicational paradigm characterized by an abundance of flows of visual signs and data sharing.

We still use cameras to photograph, but smartphones are the most common tool. Everything (images, words, moments, places…) seems to be destined to be cybernetically transcoded. It is a system based upon the primacy of ubiquity, processual facility, connectivity, extreme fluidity and circulation. Photography’s new technological paradigm is heading towards a growing simplification of the knowledges and processes necessary to an effective use of the devices necessary to produce, edit, and disseminate photography. It is undeniable that digital photography has profoundly transformed the practice of photography. Considering the plethora of impressive and countless preformatted and pre-legitimized technical and aesthetical options now available, the technical proficiency necessary to produce a photo is reduced to the click of a button. The most obvious consequence of this technical simplification (in the perspective of the user) is the incontrovertible and radical de-specialization of the practices of photography and of the figure of the photographer. It is however also self-evident that these technological developments have opened new possibilities within the fields of photographic experience and creativity.

If technology and its correlative domains of mediation are essential to this project, it is also true that its motivations and fundamentals are very simple. Xabregas City is primarily based on

the artist’s love for looking around, to wander about places he knows so well, to discover others that had never deserved is full attention, and to explore their semantic and aesthetic reverberations. The way Feliciano’s captured and collected these images consubstantiates photography’s mundane and nomadic nature.

Therefore, the reasons that led him into this photographic project are very clear.

The book offers us a peculiar vision that mixes urban documentation, autobiography, cultural and historical analysis, factography, and artistry — in other words, an experiment focused on the intertextualities and connections that exist between the concrete character of each subject and its historical, anthropological and aesthetic resonances.

Most photos were made during his walks. Let us focus on the experience of ambling around. The path highlights a process, a way to reflect on the experience of territory, of memory and imagination. The places and the subjects photographed by Feliciano represent the contemporary, but they also evoke the presence of the past, the opportunity to contemplate cycles of time (the remains of genuine landscape, junctures of rurality, the development of industrialization from the 19th to the early 20th century). Beyond the physical action of walking, the jaunts of Feliciano are inscribed in a certain possibility to see, feel, and think the circumstances of a territory. To walk implies a relationship with the ground, and, in this sense, it offers us the conditions for the affirmation of a more attentive, pensive and imaginative spectator. On the other hand, Feliciano’s wanderings are an exercise where the body and the eye confront and intertwine — while the body deals with the materiality of the real, the eye is the point of origin of all that is immaterial, of a perceptual drift, of an artistic game, of a critical speculation.

The author’s perspective on this part of the city is closely connected to the notion of place, in the sense that places are accretions of past memories and events, which may help us to perceive our time as just one of multiple strata of an immense and unpredictable history. Each place is the result of a diachrony, of a path of individual and collective practices, of signifying systems, of values and of relationships that work together to endow it with a peculiar configuration and an unrepeatable past. Consequently, a ‘place’ is also a field of languages, of images and projections, in which the physical and visible characteristics of a territory intersect its historical, fictional, political, and cultural resonances.

Recently, the notion of place has been given new strength by the public debate on the causes and effects of economic and cultural globalization, which seem to point towards a growing cultural homogenization, a monoculture (western and capitalistic) that implies the dissolution of local identities. Concepts like common space and transnational policies, along with fluxes, borders, and mobility have become commonplace. This gives strength to the idea that we are living a new and radical civilizational transition, happening under the influence of the conditions of flexible accumulation, of post-modernity, and of the compression of space-time. In this perspective, everything tends to submit to the logical conditions of contemporary capitalism, restructuring spatial relations and practices, increasing the mobility of people, goods and even production, access to transportation and the massive dissemination of information technologies that make irrelevant the geographical position of the individual, provided they have access to the network.

However, these tendencies have triggered and stimulated the rise of countercurrent cultural and artistic behaviors that signal an active yearning for a renewed attention and defense of singular geographies, based on common experiences and on values such as identity, character, idiosyncrasy, difference and history.

This has contributed to a notion of place that has posed a fundamental challenge to many contemporary artists, as they attempt to make visible and question the modes of appropriation of space, and how is it possible to recover the experiences, the dilemmas, and the echoes of a certain territoriality. In the field of the arts, this thematic and speculative tendency gained relevance with the artistic avant-gardes of the 1960s, particularly under the influence of the work and thoughts of Robert Smithson, who emphatically noted in a small text (“Proposal”) from 1972, some years after writing his seminal work A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic (1967), that “the artist must come out of the isolation of galleries and museums and provide a concrete consciousness for the present as it really exists, and not simply present abstractions or utopias [...] we should begin to develop an art education based on relationships to specific sites.

How we see things and places is not a secondary concern, but primary.” To Smithson, the artist had the primordial function of convoking, proposing, and questioning the senses of a place, opening the space for an emotional and critical fruition.

Smithson and other artists of his generation, who were interested in the issues that concern the notion of place, had a decisive role in providing us with ways to gauge the dominant visions of

culture, disallowing them. This also implied an attempt to rediscover the roots of a creativity based on spontaneity and intersubjectivity, valuing the contingent and the ephemeral as the driving forces of an idiosyncratic exploration of reality that inevitably invites to a de-cum-re-specialization of the artistic practice. Today, these expectations are still very alive. If the notion of ‘place’ is still a vital and favored theme among many contemporary artists, we owe it to the fact that, in its endless complexity, it offers an immense field of possibilities where they can rethink and redefine the role of their artistic work, the nature and the experiential scope of images, and their relation to the phenomena and contingencies of life in society.

Xabregas City is an ambivalent title: it combines the designation of an area of Lisbon — desolated by decades of public disinvestment, to the point of becoming one of the poorest areas of the city, both urbanistically and socially — with an Anglicism that seems to refer to the ongoing process of cosmopolitanization of the city of Lisbon. Nevertheless, ambivalence is also a characteristic that crosses this heterodox and contradictory territory, which is at an intermediate, transitory stage between the end of a cycle and the prospective vision of a new, contemporary, era.

During his peripatetic incursions into this small and peculiar world, Feliciano recombined modes of looking and seeing: the anthropologist and the artist, the resident and the alien, the flâneur and the ragman, the historian and the critic as points of view subjected to juxtapositions and oscillations between perceptual and awareness states that inevitably collapse reality and fiction, objectivity and drift, irony, humor, and sarcasm.

In one year, the artist took more than 8,000 photos and published 1404, all of which are now reproduced in this book, in 156 grids containing 9 images each. Their sequence is chronological; free from all thematic or narrative criteria, these photographs essay relationships, displacements and references that may be established between the different images. Nonetheless, the serial nature of this work elicits the possibility of a story, a narrative hidden behind the thematic differentiations and juxtapositions. Additionally, we can also look at each group of nine images as a bigger, multifaceted image.

In the book, stands out the abundance of its subjects: places, architectural details, objects, abandoned things, ruins, debris, remains of buildings, vegetation, graffiti, gardens, deactivated factories, workshops of rare or endangered crafts, houses in

precarious conditions, signage, toponymy, garbage, shops, social housing neighborhoods and working-class villas, churches, monuments, palaces, old farms, railway lines and facilities, among others. Persons are rare, the images favor a gaze upon the territory, buildings and the coincidence in space of multiple materials and objects. It is a non-interventionist gaze, one that avoids disturbing the lives of the people that live there. This avoidance of the human presence can also be felt as a way to bring about a displacement that sends the viewer into a paradoxical and distended space-time, immune to the concrete nature of gestures and actions.

Feliciano is interested in the places of Xabregas as a theme, but also as a peculiar domain of perceptions, that is, as two inseparable dimensions that sanction the existence of a fundamental relationship between the gaze and reality. As we well know, this duplicity is a characteristic that runs through the entire tradition of urban photography, a fundamental branch of the history of photography, as a conglomerate of genres and styles that range from the objectivist parameters of topographic representation, to the subjectivist approaches that denounce the movement of the photographer’s body. In Xabregas City we find all these modes and declinations that characterize urban photography. Flat, neutral and planimetric planes, interspersed with pronounced variations of the gaze, up or down, diagonal or oblique views, that is, all the possibilities of negotiating between the machinic and the human gaze.

In general terms, what we have here is a sensitive inventory: a collection of things, fragments and details found in our world. In this constellation of images, different subjects have equal value — be it real, aesthetic, or symbolic. The excessive presence of images is consistent with the cacophony of the urban and with the cumulative vortex typical of contemporary culture. Looking at these images we can also identify two different approaches to a photographic practice. One is explicitly bound to the field of art, or at least subsumed to an acquired culture, a cultivated and pondered knowledge that has the power to convoke and project intentionality and meaning onto the representations (in this case, an intuitive and ‘visual’ gaze that searches for drawing, for the sculptural or other categories within the field of art). The second is not necessarily alien to art, but comes about as an essentially instinctive and undisciplined practice, indifferent to its artistic legitimacy for the simple reason that it feeds from the contingencies and opportunities of the moment, collecting them as the testimonies of an everyday, direct and informal life — which these images so singularly bear witness to.

In this case, the focus on the quotidian implies not only the demarcation of a field of work, but also the assumption of a representational attitude that reflects upon and points towards a field that is open to all sorts of incursions and allows all kinds of behaviors susceptible to scrutinize and reshape the nature and the role of visual arts. In a more specific context, the pregnancy of the quotidian is intimately linked to the practice of photography, confirming that one of the most distinctive and distinguished qualities of the photographer arises from the capacity to impress aesthetic and conceptual relevance onto seemingly banal, irrelevant, and unexpected subjects or moments.

For those who live in or are acquainted with the city of Lisbon, Xabregas City can be a perplexing experience. It is a less known part of Lisbon (certainly less touristy), and in this sense these images compose a non-official cartography, one that diverges from the generic and typical representations of the city. We owe this divergence, among other things, to the way Feliciano confronts and looks at the subjects and issues he happens upon. The inconstancy of his gaze, the variations of perspective, abrupt changes between in-depth perspectives and others that focus on opaque motifs (walls, façades, the ground...), alternating between wide shots and details, but also varying between the old and the new, the run-down and the reconstructed, the trivial and the uncanny, the ugly and the beautiful, the humorous and the serious. Looking at these images one may recognize a freedom of movement and approximation that is reminiscent of the experience of the dérive (in English: ‘drift’), the psychogeographic strategy proposed by the Situationist International in the mid-20th century. Devised as a playful and constructive way of discovering and deciphering the territory, the dérive contradicts the conventional and superficial formulas for the recognition of urban space, favoring a knowledgemovement that feeds from involuntary encounters that stimulate the participation of the subject as an active and sensible figure, rather than as a mere passerby (or tourist).

Much in the manner of the dérive, Feliciano’s images configure an alternative method through which one may reconstruct the knowledge and the expectations we have of Lisbon’s urban reality.

In this context, Xabregas City reveals how much our urban environment potentiates the dérive. This knowledge should be used to sway people out of their usual routes, of their routines, reaffirming the city as a space of freedom where every subject may independently and creatively exercise their awareness of the

aesthetic, material, and emotional aspects that populate the urban landscape. In short, it is a question of giving new strength to the idea suggested by Blanchot in his text “La parole quotidienne” (1959): “every individual carries in himself a set of reflections, of intentions, that is to say reticences, that commit him to an oblique existence.” The oblique is the space, the gaps through which an individual may escape the (self)controlled facets of life. Those spaces and gaps, they are the stuff of Xabregas City.

Regarding the expeditions of João Paulo Feliciano to Xabregas City

Early on there was an opposition established between eastern and western Lisbon. Already in the growing outskirts, Muslims defined an Alfama that was comprised primarily of fishmongers and prospectors (Adiça), to the east, and more commercial hillock of artisans to the west. Beginning with the Muslim period, the western outskirts would acquire a greater social and economic importance which was accentuated by Afonso III, who gave importance to the Rua dos Mercadores and transferred the Tuesday Market from the gates of Alcáçova (today Chão da Feira) to Rossio. Dom Dinis continued his father’s project, building the seawall of Ribeira and promoted the opening of what would be Lisbon’s grand avenue up until 1755, the Rua Nova (dos Ferros), parallel to the shoreline.

In 15th and 16th centuries, the city grew mostly towards the west, a tendency which would persist through the following centuries.

But the most relevant aspect of the city’s development up until the 19th century, is its linear growth. In 1611, the first public transportation service opens to the public in Lisbon: a boat route connecting Belém to Xabregas. In 1880, the city stretched for several kilometers along the beach from east to west, but, at its “thickest” point, it went only as far as what is today, more or less, the Rua das Pretas.

An expansion into the hinterlands would be supported by two main axes, which later became the Avenida da Liberdade and the Avenida Rainha Dona Amélia/Almirante Reis. In a way, these two axes import the city’s secular east-west dichotomy into its new areas, further away from the river. It would be the urbanism of the Estado Novo, and the actions of Duarte Pacheco, who sought to counter this opposition with the planning of the Instituto Superior Técnico, Alameda, Areeiro, Praça de Londres, Avenida de Roma and Alvalade.

But to the east the city grew in a different direction, a process fed by successive waves of industrialization and contingent on the growing importance of the waterways and of the railroad, and accompanied by the progressive withdrawal of the bourgeoisie and the devaluation of the land. The railroad would determine the future of the territory with diverse infrastructures interfacing the rail and the waterways, attracting industry and warehouses and considerably degrading the environment… as a consequence, little by little, the area lost its aristocratic aura — the palaces and stately homes became derelict, giving way to the conglomerates of collective habitations, combined with warehouses, stores and workshops, or else to the antechambers of impromptu shantytowns such as the Bairro Chinês.

As Oliveira Martins once wrote, “Through the Tagus, maritime Portugal embraces agricultural Portugal, melding into one, two typical physiognomies of the nation. The river above, the Alentejo to one side and the Beira on the other, communicating in this way with the maritime population of the coastline.” Throughout the centuries, until the advent of the railways, the Tagus has emptied into the port of Lisbon the products of an economic basin that is far greater than its hydrographic basin in Portugal — agricultural and husbandry products, products derived from mining and from the transformation of varied raw materials (ash, coal, soap…) would descend the Tagus via an integrated system of transports — on the backs of animals and in carts, in barges on the tributaries and from upstream in the Spanish interior by way of rafts and finally in large boats, growing in size with the proximity of the river mouth (and of the tides…). Without the Tagus, Lisbon could be a fishing port, and eventually an ocean port, turned outwards, but never the command center for such a vast territory, the magnet which permitted the configuration of the nation-state which very early on corresponded to Portugal.

Lisbon and the Tagus made a decisive contribution for both the unity and individuality of Portugal: its people and goods flow up and down the river, from wherever roads and paths converged, along with the other navigable rivers; allowing for local and regional markets to be viable while defining specific economic strongholds which have been affirmed throughout the centuries. In turn, this was the base for the commercial relationships which were established and strengthened with distant lands, in the Mediterranean, in the North Sea and in the Baltic. Via freshwater navigation, a riverside urbanity had spread which helped to build a cultural unity that spanned from Lisbon to the Portuguese borders.

Lisbon was born out of this process, a linear city which stretches along the eastern banks, defined by means of transportation that have left their impressions upon the content and the manner of this development.

Eventually, the railroad started replacing the riverways, stealing almost all its clientele — in Entroncamento and in the surrounding areas of Vila Nova da Barquinha and Atalaia, the competition was at its fiercest, with the railroad company buying up the boats, removing them from service and employing the former boatmen to eliminate the competition.

In a survey administered in the high schools of Lisbon during the 1970s, the concept of this east versus west opposition was apparent, and in the mental maps of the surveyed students, Avenida Almirante Reis was a borderline, with the lands to the east constituting an enormous void. They had just no information about it, topographical or functional.

In the 1940s, the ideas and projects of contemporary urban planning arrived in Portugal, and they kept projecting East Lisbon as a city of labor — industry, logistics, habitation. They began on the waterfront strip, where the neo-technical city would overlap the moribund and tattered remains of the fragile paleo-technical city. Landfills dug for the new industries allowed for the recuperation of the linear axis that runs the length of the city from the west to the east, from Algés to Cabo Ruivo.

The hinterland, where the municipality had acquired vast amounts of rural lands to develop, played host to a series of urbanistic experiments — the echoes of various architectural paradigms established in Europe throughout the 20th century, from the garden city to functionalism, and back to the model of the linear city in the second half of the century. In this process, there was also the opportunity for some social experiments that can be better described as assistentialist and third-worldly.

In the same fashion, there then came architectural experiments which generated, just in time, some debate on the multiple problems created by the housing shortage that was affecting the poorer classes.

Because of these temporal and spatial processes, with diverse social and economic frameworks, the region of East Lisbon offers, at every crossing, true stratigraphic inversions, exhibiting great shifts in land usage and permanent conflicts.

A consequence of the ecosystem, the combination of a luminous landscape with the artist’s gaze, we can feel here a serenity which transports us beyond colors and shapes and is enriched with oriental tones. Poetic narratives are evident, and are offered not only as readings, but as experiences. These are photographs intended to be visited and travelled.

Through his thorough mapping, it is possible to travel a long and sinuous historic path which has driven the spaces of East Lisbon towards contrasting situations: a repository of archaisms, an emergence of novelties, and the promises of innovation. These factors have helped to configure an atypical landscape which is impossible to be included in any of the available categories of classification: neither rural nor urban, neither industrial nor post-industrial. Could it be proto-neo-urban? It is necessarily post-urban, but it cannot be considered not-urban, for it has all the elements that can eventually lead to urbanity, even if in very uneven and small samples.

It is a landscape that permits, and even demands, a variety of keys for its interpretation and discovery. A cinematic approach rapidly emerges as one of these keys, as is exemplary illustrated by the photographs of João Paulo Feliciano. Wandering into these desperate lands, through its manifold spatiality, the artist takes us back to Italian neo-realism, but also presents us with scenes that could have been taken from “pulp fiction,” in such a way that at times we have the sensation that we are visiting a forgotten warehouse from a classic Hollywood film studio. In fact, we can look at these images and imagine them as the sets for a multitude of films: from utopia to dystopia, from a new metropolis, to a city of rust.

Fugitives and creatives THE IMAGES OF A READING The survey-expedition undertaken by João Paulo Feliciano in East Lisbon, which has been synthesized into this series of photographs, opens several windows to this fascinating space, encrypted within its own complex geometries.

It is an end, in the sense that it is a synthesis, a poetic vision, in the domain of an artistic approach, but it is also a beginning (various beginnings), an opportunity for new voyages, new explorations, and for the renewal of old models.

This could be one of the possible inroads for this photo-territory, a space which has been reconstructed by way of the camera. Often, we find the traces of those who were pushed, driven from other lands and here found their refuge, in a region of transition, in transit to who knows where or what, closing in towards other temporary grounds; as if in a bus or railway station, waiting for a vehicle to somewhere, to a future, but many times ending up building or rebuilding that same space so that they could gain a sense of place.

Also frequent are the signs of the creativity of other passing figures, roaming in search of a future which they feel has perme-

ated into this land, which at times smells of the promised land, another New California.

What would I do with these images?

So many things! From the very start, it is a fantastic atlas of great usefulness to urban studies due to its multidisciplinary richness.

Here is almost everything: the before and after, the past and the future of the city and of its inhabitants. An encyclopedic manual that explains and demonstrates the flora, the nature, the built environment, the sacred and the profane, the colors — bright and faded, the technology, industry and agriculture, labor and leisure, and including the labor of leisure. Hydraulics and viniculture, the fluvial and ground transports, war and peace, dreams and nightmares: “Debbie loves Zé Manel”, “whore leave My Husband alone”.

I left such a good house, in stone, to come here.’ And so I cried, cried, cried…” http://rr.sapo.pt/especial/48500/marvila_o_lado_ invisivel_de_lisboa An atlas such as this must be useful for many things; a directing guide and a treasure chest, where one can always go to find the azimuth, an explanation, or the missing link. Here is a place from where new paths start, and new itineraries are born.

VIGNETTES Gardens and farms The proximity of the city — the market, the geological structure, and the existence of an aquifer that permitted the drilling of wells which would prove to be highly productive, facilitated small-scale farming. Dating back to the Middle Ages, there are records of walled gardens whose production would arrive to the city by fluvial transport, either to Cais da Ribeira or some other. As such, the numerous archeological remnants of these gardens, which were the basis of the farms which preceded the large urbanistic projects of Chelas and Olivais Sul, give us notice of their predecessors, the walled gardens that once descended from Vale de

Chelas until Xabregas... Theirs is a memory that present day urban gardens cannot do justice to, neither topographically nor functionally.

A farmstead is a manner of occupying territory typical of the urban peripheries, and the periphery of Lisbon has been in continual development since the Roman colonization, with its greatest growth happening between the 16th and the 19th centuries.

These farms were extensions of the city, a refuge from the ills of urban life (from the plague to tuberculosis), for repose, but were also used to feed it with agricultural products: the regular daily supply of dairy and vegetable products, some olive oil and cereal production, and the ever-present annual production of wine, preceded in the yearly schedule by água-pé, a secondary product of the pressing of wine.

Enclosed by imposing gates, the dwellings formed by these farmsteads and walled spaces were connected by a network of roads generally paved with basalt stonework. These winding pathways were known by the Islamic term azinhaga, and, whenever entering populated areas, were often referred to as Rua Direita, which in English translates into Straight Road (Rua Direita de Marvila, Rua Direita dos Olivais…).

This system began to be eroded from the outside due to the railroads and the correlated industrialization. First, it fell victim of the physical consequences brought by these changes, as smoke, odors, and waste degraded the environment. Secondly, it was further destroyed by the pressure to find cheap accommodations for the workers who flowed in from the Rural Portugal. These migrants easily adapted to the rustic conditions offered by the farmsteads, by way of modifying the stables and barns, or other annexes to the main residence… which, many times, with the decline in agriculture and the devaluing of the farm as a space for urban bourgeoisie, were also adapted to serve as collective housing. Already in the 20th century, as the flow of migrants increased, the fields began to be occupied by shanty towns that took the names of the farms (in Portuguese, “quintas”) upon which they were built: Quinta do Marquês de Abrantes, Quinta dos Alfinetes, Quinta…

There are numerous vestiges of this multilayered settlement of the “quintas,” but they are fragmented and archeologically disperse, presenting many surface deposits where it is very difficult to draw out an acceptable stratigraphy. Parallel to the excavations, it is necessary to produce a thorough analysis along the walls of the farms, to find shards and other ceramic debris, fossils of

various ages and epochs — stonework, bricks, tiles, and plaster.

Then still, there is the living archeology, the leftovers of an informed and meticulous agriculture that dates back to Roman times, and was further enriched during the Muslim period, leaving behind a vast terminology which still persists: terms such as noras, azinhagas, almácegas, alfobres, alcatruzes, alfenim. But it is only upon cresting a hill or trekking along the walls of these farmsteads that we may perceive the agricultural legacy that remains active. Here and there it has been enriched by new contributors, most notably those coming from Cape Verde, with a greater projection towards sugar cane, the raw material for the grog they will produce not far from here. Urban gardens, hidden gardens, nostalgic gardens and gardens of necessity, wherein there are still hidden the genes of this millennial agrarian history, which was born and persists in the shadow of the city.

Forestry archeology Holding a central position in the toponymy of East Lisbon, olive groves are still a constant presence throughout the entire area, despite the clear-cutting that characterized the process of occupation, and of the construction of roadways and social housing in the last six decades.

The olive trees, which certainly bear the distinction of antiquity and which very well may be two thousand years old, were brought and planted, or simply grafted by peoples originating from either Greece or Phoenicia. They have survived against the walls of old farms, in the middle of vacant spaces, which furthermore are ways of soil resistance, the memory of the landscape and of biodiversity.

They resisted natural degeneration in wild olive groves, known as zambujeiros, finding shelter on hillsides and in valleys. And, in an absurd absurdity, one may still find them today as a landscaping highlight, transplanted from the Alqueva, in the niches of what is referred to as public space.

Also lost, their origins forgotten, other trees — brought here by the original settlers of these farms — await a responsible stewardship, so that they might play a role in the new landscapes now being configured. They are the palm trees — those of which have resisted the most recent plague; the extremely rare elms, typical of an older rustic Lisbon, until a fatal disease decimated them without anyone bothering to protect them; they are the ash trees,

the Norfolk pines, the poplars, the cypresses, all belonging to the memory of that Lisbon, which prefers (?) the species which nurseries can provide at any time, as long as they will grow quickly.

Heritage – abandoned and forgotten As has been made evident in several surveys and published studies, East Lisbon offers an extraordinarily rich built heritage, with historic value and cultural relevance. Notwithstanding, the dilapidation and the abandonment of this patrimony is unmistakable, perhaps here more than in any other Portuguese urban center.

The situation is particularly grave in the constructions found in rural spaces, foremost in the farms, but also it would imply preserving other structures, such as the walls, the stone walkways, the hydraulic infrastructures — wells, waterwheels, springs, aqueducts, fountains, washing tanks, pools and almácegas.

In the same fashion, there is to be found a rich patrimony, which might very well go unnoticed, of worker’s dwellings that include certain typologies, some of which are still in existence today: villas (islands) and cooperative housing, the marks of the urban penetrations into rural space.

Urban cycles and the reuse of spaces and infrastructures The adaptation of infrastructures to different uses according to economic cycles is a constant in the relationship between humans and territories. This dynamism is particularly active in the city and in its immediate surroundings.

Such processes have more continuity and prevalence over time if there are no large-scale changes in land use. Eastern Lisbon offers a rich portfolio of these dynamics and contrasting situations.

The “contaminations” and the conflicts over the diverse uses and demands characterize the urban-territorial process since the 19th century and have been passed on to us. With the speedy fixation of a new paradigm regarding land use, the big “shifts” began in the 1950s with the urbanistic mega-projects of Olivais Sul and Chelas and, in the end of the 20th century, with Expo 98/Parque das Nações.

If in the second case there was a radical cleaning of the “passive,” scouring for once and for all the dumping grounds, the scrapyards, the rust, the degraded and temporary housing, the

smoke and other miasmas; in the new neighborhoods the gestation was slow, generations of inhabitants came and left, from different geographic origins and social strata, in different waves of settlement that originated irregular landscapes where dystopic environments existed side by side with veritable showcases of contemporary architecture, at times configuring attitudes of experimentalism.

As such, the “core” of these large scale residential settings provides us with an enormous socio-cultural wealth, as the result of diverse origins and intriguing processes of conflict, approximation and of the construction of new identities, which are then in turn reflected in a landscape which may appear to be uniform, but only from afar.

Yet the greatest diversity of these so-called “spontaneous” socio-cultural interventions occurs on the margins of these projects, on their surfaces of contact, in the nooks and crannies overlooked by the larger interventions. This diversity can also be found in the spaces — which are now in fashion — that are simplistically designated as vacant zones, but that enclose distinct realities, or, in other words, have witnessed distinct processes of occupancy.

The margins We have documentation about the encounters that took place on the frontiers of East Lisbon, stories of the rural immigrants arriving from Minho, from Trás-os-Montes, from Douro, from the Beiras or the Alentejo. We read Eça de Queiroz’s clear depiction of the petit-bourgeois Artur Covelo as he enters the metropolis, and the description of the poor boy with a sack on his shoulder in the 1930s, descending from the mail train in Braço de Prata. Forced out of his home by the crisis and seeing no chance of crossing the ocean to attempt his luck in Brazil, the boy comes to find a hometown friend who was already working in one of the farms near the Armador.

There he started his long journey in the big city, starting from its margins, working in one of those homesteads which fed Lisbon, perhaps in Conchas. And how this facilitated the miracle of integration!

Another image, powerful and well documented is formed by the lands that separate the modern city — modernist and consolidated — and this unknown, agro-rural territory in the first stages of its decay. These lands would finally be integrated in the “Malha de Chelas,” but we can still see them in the movie Verdes Anos, from 1963. A space in transition which only decades before had

been the playground of the bohemians and the space for the family Sunday stroll — the space where one would go outdoors, the space for the taverns and inns of the Azinhaga da Fonte do Louro, do Vale Formoso de Cima or, further out, of Olivais… it also had its place as the daytrip/daydream for lovers.

The margins of the peripheral neighborhoods of the 1930s and 1940s, which lived a quarter of a century of isolation, with their back turned to the outside, connected to the city just by the umbilical cord of the Carris bus: Praça do Chile-Encarnação, Praça do Chile-Madre de Deus…

The area of contact with modern industry, most of which was already obsolete and open to reconversion — so that it could be used by the service industry, for habitation, logistics, or, adapting their workshops and studios, by a wide range of arts and crafts.

Or the borders between the living and the dead, that is to say, the contact zones with the cemeteries, so mistreated or even simply forgotten by the urban planners, by the politicians and by the citizenry. In their decay, they may become shelters, archaisms, or generate repulsion, but they are by no means empty voids.

The voids It is in what is called the Malha de Chelas, a picturesque designation with its roots in the urbanism of the 1960s, that we have been mostly “digging” in our quest to search and to deepen our knowledge of urban voids. Aside from the sociological and anthropological approaches, the approaches of the visual arts are also of interest. Among these projects, Lisbon – Capital of Nothing is perhaps the best example.

In one particular morning, in 1969 or 1970, when I was making geographic and architectonic surveys around Olivais Sul, I found myself on the edge of an ample plot of unclaimed land, which urban planning had designated as the future site for a commercial and service hub. Standing there, I witnessed the arrival of a group of men, women and children — as if in an Italian film from the 1940s or 1950s — carrying hoes, burlap sacks, and baskets. They stopped, made a few measurements and alignments and set about digging, digging and digging, with zeal, energy and enthusiasm.

They opened the sacks from where they took out potatoes, which they proceeded to cut (the sprouts) and the slivers which they obtained went into the baskets: the “seed.”

At midday, they began sowing (in the irrigation trenches…).

By sunset that void was beautiful and productive, still awaiting the businesses and services which would only arrive a decade later, first with a supermarket, and afterwards with a mall, now served by the subway.

An incubator — or breeding ground Within this intricate space, with time and geographies accompanied by bursts of progress, there exist innumerable projects and ideas which might stultify, as much as they might germinate and see the light of day, in loco or far away. Such is the energy of that relational geography: Marvila-New York; Braço de Prata-Dubai; Capitão Leitão-Bogota; Chelas-Antiques-Africa-…; Olivais, London, Poço do Bispo, San Francisco, Dublin, Miami, … the World.

It is a territory fragmented, or even atomized, in time and space, and lacking in connections, in relations, close ties, density.

Yet at the same time, it is a propitious place for dreams. In this sense, it remains connected to that era of immigration to the factories, or more simply just the gateway to the jobs in the modern city: it has become once again a land of opportunity.

The Eastern East It is by the Sea of Straw, the Tagus passing through on its way to the ocean, that this territory of Lisbon becomes more eastern.

Perhaps it is for this very reason that it was the ultimate destination, the last dock, for many of the mariners bound for the South Seas and the Orient.

At sundown, in all the seasons of the year, illuminated by the evening dusk, silent and solemn, the Sea of Straw, luminous and amber, drowsy but powerful, with some boats, still on its waters, the Tagus offers us a scene worthy of any of the great oriental rivers — the Ganges, Irrawaddy, Mekong, Zhu Jiang, Yangtze, or the Yellow River…

Nota sobre este livro Este livro reúne 1404 fotografias da zona oriental de Lisboa publicadas por João Paulo Feliciano no Instagram e Facebook ao longo de um ano, entre o dia 9 de Novembro de 2015 e o dia 22 de Novembro de 2016. Durante esse período o artista realizou um total de 8300 fotografias, todas elas tiradas com iPhone, que foram sendo seleccionadas e publicadas a um ritmo de várias por dia. A ordem das fotografias no livro reproduz a sequência cronológica da sua publicação original.

Note about this book This book compiles 1404 photos of Lisbon’s east side published by João Paulo Feliciano on his Instagram and Facebook accounts between November 9, 2015, and November 22, 2016. During roughly one year the artist made a 8300 photos, using his iPhone, which were selected and published in more-or-less real time, at a pace of several photos a day. The order of photos in the book reproduces the original chronological sequence of its original publication.

An exhibition of the 1404 photos that constitute the series “Xabregas City” was held at Ar.Co – Arts & Visual Communication Centre, in Xabregas, between March 10 and May 20, 2017.
