Obras Destruídas de Júlio Pomar

Terceira secção do catálogo Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento, publicado por ocasião da exposição que juntou os dois artistas no Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, entre 29 de Outubro de 2016 e 12 de Março de 2017, este volume apresenta um extenso conjunto de fotografias a preto-e-branco que mostram obras datadas da segunda metade da década de 1960, quase todas captadas em 1968 (antes ou depois de Maio), no atelier do pintor em Paris.

As imagens que aqui se publicam, com a permissão do artista, disponibilizadas pela Fundação Júlio Pomar especialmente para esta edição, revelam obras em execução ou deixadas inacabadas e outras talvez dadas por concluídas, mas todas igualmente destruídas. As imagens permitem dar a conhecer, por um lado, o cenário privado da residência e atelier do pintor – instalado em 1963 em Paris, na Rue Molitor, n.º 39, XVIe Arrondissement – e, por outro, documentam uma produção datável de 1964 a 1968 com a qual Júlio Pomar deixou então de se identificar e que por isso destruiu, num momento de mudança de processos de trabalho e também de temáticas.

O pendor abstracto das obras que são aqui pela primeira vez apresentadas parece acompanhar uma saturação face às séries e aos meios formais que o pintor vinha a desenvolver anteriormente, num «realismo» de cunho eminentemente gestual, com movimentos amplos e pinceladas livres, sempre com origem na observação directa das cenas e dos espaços. Trata-se de um período de experiências e inovações temáticas, que incluiu o bem-sucedido ciclo das corridas de cavalos, Les Courses, mas também de um tempo de exaustão e de incerteza, a que não terá sido indiferente a instalação no meio francês.

panzés vistos na Ménagerie do Jardin des Plantes2, mais as Étreintes [Abraços] e os Metros iniciais (vejam-se os n.os 271 a 282 do Catálogo Raisonné vol. I, adiante referido como CR I).

Seguiram-se, a partir de 1964, as Corridas de cavalos, primeiro observadas no campo de Auteuil, perto de sua casa, depois em Longchamp e Vincennes, com as diferentes modalidades de corrida: obstáculos, galope e trote atrelado.

Expostas Les Courses, logo em 1965, na mesma Galerie Lacloche, 8 Place Vendôme, o pintor encerrou depressa esse ciclo apesar de um êxito de mercado que dispersou parte da produção, nomeadamente para os Estados Unidos, permanecendo várias obras por localizar até hoje. Entretanto, em resultado das visitas ao Louvre, apareceram as Batailles (d’après Uccello)3 – a Batalha de San Romano, e descobrem-se agora, além de quatro ensaios destruídos sobre o mesmo tema, também duas «revisitações» de obras de Velázquez, antes vistas no Prado, nomeadamente um retrato equestre e Los Borrachos. Essas Batalhas iriam continuar até 1968: «em Maio estava eu a refazer interpretações das batalhas de Paolo Uccello – que, reduzidas aos seus elementos mais simples, são lanças, paus, capacetes – e de repente dou com isso ao vivo na rua», tinha dito o pintor em 19804.

Tinham surgido entretanto os Catch ou Lutas, que resultam das visitas a salões da luta livre francesa (Salle Wagram) e que se prolongaram na mais longa série de obras destruídas. Sobreviveram apenas duas telas conhecidas, datadas de 1965 mas já distanciadas em tempo e «linguagem», que se podem ver reproduzidas no Catálogo Raisonné I (n.os 330 e 331). Mas também se conhece uma larga série de desenhos da mesma data, os quais vieram a ser divulgados por iniciativa do editor e amigo parisiense Joaquim Vital na revista Discordance (Paris, 1978, número único) e depois no livro Catch: thèmes et variations, com um ensaio do pintor (Éditions de la Différence, 1984). Entretanto, 34 desenhos tinham sido tirados em litografia com destino a um álbum5 que só foi efectivamente concretizado em 2014, já pela Fundação Júlio Pomar.

Outras obras agora identificadas e também destruídas multiplicam as direcções de pesquisa: quatro ensaios da série Beatles (vejam-se as três telas de 1965, CR I n.os 327-329,) e mais quatro variantes da tela Parade, n.º 343 do mesmo catálogo. Esta é uma obra isolada, datada de 1966, que alude, no limiar do reconhecimento, a um desfile imaginário de músicos e mascarados com caveiras. Na documentação fotográfica agora revelada inclui-se também um grande crocodilo em formato 50 × 150 cm (CR I n.º 346). É mais uma peça de um bestiário que por essa época se renova com os primeiros porcos (CR I n.os 347-349).

Mas no caso de outras telas adiante reproduzidas já não existe ou não é possível reconhecer qualquer dado referencial. Documentam uma pesquisa claramente assumida pelos caminhos da abstracção gestual, de notório automatismo, a que o pintor não deu continuidade. Notar-se-á, no entanto, que essas cinco telas destruídas são de algum modo próximas do quadro Foire du trône (CR I n.º 353), nome de uma feira popular parisiense, e de Vista de Lisboa (CR I n.º 351) – duas obras únicas na produção do pintor, habitualmente estruturada em séries.

A seguir a um período de quatro meses de férias e trabalho no Algarve, no Verão de 1967, em Manta Rota, em que começou a produzir assemblages6 de objectos e materiais encontrados na praia7, e seguramente já sob o impacto dos acontecimentos de Maio de 1968, o pintor terá considerado o seu trabalho num impasse. Terá sentido a necessidade de voltar a «estabilizar» a sua pintura, o que aconteceria com os fundos lisos e as formas recortadas que surgem a partir das séries Rugby e Mai 68 (CRS-SS), obras que têm origem em fotografias da imprensa – uma mudança decisiva na sua metodologia de trabalho – com sequência nos Banhos turcos, segundo Ingres e nos retratos dos anos seguintes, em que o gesto e as pinceladas livres desapareceram.

As imagens de época que se apresentam neste volume são testemunhos de um conjunto de experiências que o pintor desenvolveu, quase em passagem para o campo da «abstracção» (conceito explorado na exposição Void*: Júlio Pomar 6 A exposição que juntará Júlio Pomar e Pedro Cabrito Reis, em Junho-Setembro de 2017, procurará investir sobre esta fase e este tipo de produção artística.

& Julião Sarmento), no qual o artista não se reviu e que abandonou, destruindo deliberadamente as provas materiais da incursão nesse universo plástico. Assim, estas imagens são também um registo dos processos e enredos, nem sempre evidentes, que os artistas atravessam ao longo da sua obra, muitas vezes vagueando e falhando nos caminhos que buscam, mas que certamente dão origem a produções mais firmes, fulgurantes, a que nunca chegariam sem passar por estes meandros.

Obras Destruídas [Destroyed Works]

by Júlio Pomar The third section of the catalogue Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento was published on the occasion of the exhibition that brought together the two artists at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar between 29 October 2016 and 12 March 2017. This volume features an extensive set of black and white photographs featuring works dating from the second half of the 1960s, almost all of them captured in 1968 (before and after May) in the painter’s studio in Paris.

The images, published here with the permission of the artist, were made available by the Júlio Pomar Foundation especially for this publication and feature works that were destroyed: some of which were still in progress or abandoned and others that were completed. The images reveal, on the one hand, the private residence and studio of the painter – established in Paris in 1963 at 39 Rue Molitor, 16th Arrondissement – and, on the other hand, document output from 1964 to 1968 which Júlio Pomar no longer identified with and destroyed in a moment of change in his work processes and themes.

The abstract nature of the works that are presented here for the first time seems to accompany a saturation with serial and formal techniques the painter had previously developed, with an eminently gestural “realism” of free and broad strokes originating from direct observation of scenes and spaces. This was a period of thematic experiments and innovation, which included the successful cycle on horse racing, Les Courses, but also of exhaustion and uncertainty, which no doubt also had to do with the artist’s taking up residence in Paris.

The artist’s first subjects in Paris1 in 1963, even before finding a house and studio, were monkeys and chimpanzees seen in the Ménagerie of the Jardin des Plantes2 and produced as temperas on paper, in addition to Étreintes [Hugs] 1 The Portuguese Tauromaquias [Bullfights] were exhibited in 1964 in Galerie Lacloche: Tauromachies.

and the first of the Metros series (see numbers 271 to 282 of Catalogue Raisonné vol. I – hereinafter referred to as CR I).

From 1964 onwards the Les Courses cycle continued, first from observations at the Auteuil racing track close to the artist’s residence and then in Longchamp and Vincennes, which featured different modalities of racing in addition to the gallop such as horse jumping and harness racing. In 1965, again in the Galerie Lacloche, at 8 Place Vendôme, the painter brought the Les Courses cycle to a close, despite its commercial success that saw some of the works move abroad, particularly to the United States, with several works still to be located today. Meanwhile, as a result of visits to the Louvre, the Batailles (d’après Uccello)3 – the Battle of San Romano – appeared in addition to four sketches on the same theme which were destroyed and two “revisitations” of works by Velázquez which the artist had seen in the Prado, namely an equestrian portrait and Los Borrachos [The Triumph of Bacchus]. These Battles would continue until 1968: “In May I was reworking interpretations of Paolo Uccello’s battles – which, reduced to their simplest elements, are spears, sticks, helmets – and suddenly I saw it all in real life on the street,” the painter commented in 1980.4 Catch and Lutas [Wrestling] also appeared following visits to French wrestling salons (Salle Wagram), which were continued in the largest series from the destroyed works. Only two known paintings, dated in terms of time and their “language”, survive from 1965, which can be seen reproduced in the Catalogue Raisonné I (nos. 330 and 331). But there is also a wide range of drawings from the same date, which were disclosed at the initiative of the artist’s editor and friend in Paris, Joaquim Vital, in the magazine Discordance (Paris, 1978, single issue) and then in the book Catch: thèmes et variations, with an essay by the painter (Éditions de la Différence, 1984). Meanwhile, 34 drawings had been produced in lithography for an album5 that was only finally completed in 2014 by the Júlio Pomar Foundation.

Other works now identified and also destroyed multiply the avenues for research: four sketches of the Beatles series (see the three canvases from 1965, CR I nos. 327-329) and four other variations of the Parade canvas, no. 343 from the same catalogue. This latter is an isolated work, dated 1966, which alludes, on the threshold of recognition, to an imaginary parade of musicians and figures masked with skulls. In the photographic documentation now revealed, a large crocodile in 50 × 150 cm format (CR I no. 346) is also included.

It is one additional piece of a bestiary that at that time was widened to include the first of the pigs featured (CR I nos. 347-349).

While no further reference data is available for the other canvases reproduced here, they document an investigation clearly marked by gestural abstraction and notable automatism which the painter finally abandoned. It should be noted, however, that these five destroyed canvases are somehow similar to the painting Foire du trône (CR I no. 353), the name of a popular Parisian fair, and Vista de Lisboa [Lisbon View] (CR I no. 351) – two unique works in the painter’s output, usually structured in series.

Following a four-month vacation and work period in the Algarve in the summer of 1967, in Manta Rota, where he began to produce assemblages6 of objects and materials found on the beach7, and certainly already feeling the impact of the events of May 1968, the painter clearly considered his work to be at an impasse. Feeling a need to “restabilize” his painting, he would accomplish this with the smooth backgrounds and the cut-out shapes that would begin to emerge from the series Rugby and May 68 (CRS-SS), works which originated from press photographs in a decisive change in his work methodology, and with a sequel to Banhos turcos, segundo Ingres [The Turkish Bath, d’après Ingres] and the portraits of the following years, in which the gesture and free brushstrokes disappeared.

The period images that appear in this volume are testimonies to a set of the painter’s experiments, almost as a transition to the field of “abstraction” (a concept explored in the exhibition Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento), with 6 The exhibition from June-September 2017 which will bring together Júlio Pomar and Pedro Cabrita Reis will attempt to investigate this phase and type of artistic production.

which the artist no longer identified and subsequently abandoned, deliberately destroying the material traces of these artistic incursions. These images also serve as a record of the sometimes hidden processes and travails that artists experience throughout their work, often wandering and failing in the paths they seek, but which without doubt give rise to a firmer, more luminous production that would never be arrived at without such detours.
