Primeiro e segundo graus Sara Antónia Matos [Directora do Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar]

Quando convidei Julião Sarmento para expor no Atelier-Museu com Júlio Pomar, a minha ideia era estabelecer entre a obra dos dois artistas um diálogo «de pintor para pintor», um encontro entre pares da mesma disciplina, através do domínio da cor e da bidimensionalidade.

Uma relação temática também não teria sido difícil de estabelecer entre Júlio Pomar e Julião Sarmento, já que na obra de ambos é sintomática, se não mesmo evidente, uma componente erótica, sexual. Tanto foi escrito sobre isso que é praticamente impossível não ver na obra dos dois artistas – embora de forma diferente – um desenvolvimento destes temas. Além do que foi escrito e dito, a componente formal também torna o tema evidente: representações de corpos, fragmentos ou articulações dos mesmos, orifícios, texturas e matérias tácteis, camadas de pele, por assim dizer, percorrem a obra dos dois artistas, embora de modo distinto. Não haveria dificuldade, portanto, em relacionar as suas obras quer ao nível formal e sensível, quer ao nível do discurso construído sobre a obra. Todavia, a exposição de Júlio Pomar e Julião Sarmento no Atelier-Museu sofreu uma reviravolta no decorrer do processo de investigação e o conjunto de obras para ela seleccionadas não apresenta qualquer figuração de corpos femininos – representações através das quais, mais explicitamente, se poderiam estabelecer afinidades entre a obra de ambos.

A reviravolta inesperada trouxe à exposição apenas obras abstractas (expressão que usarei para designar obras sem representação de figuras e referentes reconhecíveis) e o título que adquiriu, Void*, acentua a vacuidade desse tipo de representações. Daí, creio, que a relação entre a obra dos dois se mostra menos evidente, tornando uma possível abordagem à exposição mais vaga ou até de teor especulativo. Por essa razão gostaria de introduzir aqui a questão das rela15

ções em primeiro e segundo graus, do espectador com a obra de arte, até porque as obras de cariz abstracto se prestam, mais do que as outras, a esta especulação: saber se é possível uma relação não mediada com a obra. Deve, no entanto, acautelar-se que Pomar não é um artista da abstracção no sentido mais literal do termo, tendo inclusive destruído deliberadamente as únicas obras abstractas que alguma vez produziu e que agora permitiu reproduzir num dos volumes deste catálogo através de imagens. Ao nível da representação, as suas obras assentam sempre em alguma figuração, em histórias, lendas, comentários sociais e múltiplas referências reais. À partida, o seu trabalho remete para relações de segundo grau, ou seja, relações que reenviam para leituras e discursos externos à obra: literários, históricos, sociológicos, políticos, poéticos, geográficos, enfim, conteúdos decorrentes de percepções várias e experiências do mundo, nomeadamente a vivência quotidiana.

Daí ser oportuno saber se é possível o espectador estabelecer com a obra de arte uma relação exclusivamente em primeiro grau. Esta foi uma pergunta que ouvi Alexandre Melo fazer a Julião Sarmento numa ocasião que não permitiu a ambos desenvolver argumentos. Suponho que o crítico de arte se está a referir a um encontro com a obra de arte livre de toda a mediação, livre e abstraído da história «da história da obra», isto é, do discurso que se construiu sobre a mesma, das narrativas externas que convoca e que se lhe sobrepõem.

Cabe-me dizer ainda que o Atelier-Museu convidou Alexandre Melo para escrever sobre esta exposição. Suponho que o mesmo não acredita na relação em primeiro grau com a obra de arte. No entanto, à data em que escrevo este texto, não sei dos assuntos que o mesmo abordará no seu ensaio.

Contudo, visto que as obras abstractas apelam em primeira instância ao sensível, à pele, gostava de tentar entrar vazia para esta exposição, vazia de referências, e fazer o exercício de me relacionar com as obras em primeiro grau.

Tenho consciência de que esse exercício, em termos absolutos, não é possível.

Mesmo sem conhecer a obra dos artistas e os seus percursos, temos as referências da história da arte, sabemos que o museu tem o papel de criar um enquadramento e um discurso para as obras, que na proximidade as obras se afectam e redefinem entre si, enfim, que a relação é sempre «relacional».

First- and Second-Degree Sara Antónia Matos [Director of the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar]

When I invited Julião Sarmento to exhibit at the Atelier-Museu with Júlio Pomar, my idea was to establish a “painter-to-painter” dialogue between the work of the two artists, an encounter between peers from the same discipline, through the domain of colour and two-dimensionality.

It would have been easy, too, to establish a thematic relationship between Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento since, in both their work, there is a symptomatic, if not clearly evident, sexual and erotic element. This has been written about so often that it is almost impossible not to see an exploration – albeit of a different type – of these themes in the work of both artists. In addition to what has been written and said, the theme is also made evident by the formal aspect of their work: in different ways, representations of bodies, body fragments and articulations, orifices, textures and tactile matter, layers of skin, as it were, permeate the work of the two artists. It would not be difficult therefore to relate their work on either the formal and sensible level or at the level of the discourse that has been constructed about the work. Nevertheless, the AtelierMuseu’s exhibition of Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento took an unexpected turn during the research process. As a result, the selected group of works doesn’t contain any representations of female bodies – representations that would allow more explicit affinities between the work of these artists to be established.

This unexpected change in direction meant only abstract works (an expression I will use to refer to works without recognisable representations of figures and referents) came to be included in the exhibition. The title that emerged, Void*, accentuates the emptiness of such representations. It seems to me that the relationship between their work consequently appears less evident, making a less direct, or even speculative, approach to the exhibition possible.

That is why I would now like to introduce the question of first- and second-degree kinship, between the viewer and the artwork, not least because abstract works, more than any other, lend themselves to the following speculation: discovering whether a non-mediated relationship with the work is possible. It should be noted, however, that Pomar is not an abstract artist in the literal sense of the term: in fact, he deliberately destroyed the only abstract works he ever produced, images of which are reproduced in this catalogue with his permission. At the level of representation, his works are always based on some kind of figuration, on stories, legends, social commentaries, and multiple real references. Initially, his work evokes second-degree relations, relations that refer back to readings and discourses that are external to the work: of a literary, historical, sociological, political, poetic or geographic nature – content, in short, derived from various perceptions and experiences of the world, particularly daily existence.

It would be pertinent, then, to discover whether it is possible for the viewer to establish a purely first-degree relationship with the work. I heard Alexandre Melo ask this question to Julião Sarmento on an occasion when it wasn’t possible for either of them to develop their arguments. I assume that the art critic was referring to an encounter with the artwork free from all mediation, free and abstracted from the story “of the story of the work” – that is, from the discourse constructed about that work, from the external narratives it evokes and that are superimposed upon it.

I should also say that the Atelier-Museu invited Alexandre Melo to write about this exhibition. I assume that he does not believe in the first-degree relationship with the work of art. However, at the time of writing this text, I don’t know what points he will address in his essay.

Nonetheless, given that abstract works appeal, first of all, to the senses, to the skin, I would like to try to enter this exhibition empty, empty of references, and to establish a first-degree relationship with the works. I am aware that this exercise is not possible in absolute terms. Even if we didn’t know the work of these artists, or the course of their careers, we have art historical points of reference, we know that the role of the museum is to create a context and a discourse for works, that works affect and redefine each other in proximity; in short, the relationship is always “relational”.

Quando me convidaram para escrever um texto sobre a exposição de Júlio Pomar e Julião Sarmento no Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar disse logo que sim, por causa dos artistas e por causa de quem me convidou.

Disse que sim, mesmo sem saber o tema e, para tentar começar a alinhavar ideias, pensei: o tema há-de ser o corpo. Conhecendo a obra dos dois artistas não havia volta a dar, haveríamos de ir parar ao corpo, esse porco que não nos larga do princípio ao fim das nossas vidas, e obras, quando as temos. O velho amigo, o honesto porco, tornaria até a tarefa mais fácil.

Mas, como também seria de prever, dada a imprevisibilidade com que devemos contar por parte de artistas e curadores talentosos, foram aqui trocadas as voltas aos corpos e o tema foi, por assim dizer, aquilo que não fosse o corpo, ou seja, os lugares onde não é reconhecível a figuração da presença de um corpo. É uma maneira de entender o significado da palavra «Void» («Vazio») que serve de título à exposição. O vazio é o lugar onde (já?) não está um corpo, o lugar deixado «vazio» pela ausência de um corpo.

O que «deixa» o corpo nesse lugar ora vazio onde já não está? Deixa «marcas», como se diz das marcas «deixadas» num lençol ou num chão, restos de «sujidade» (numa acepção mais ou menos literal ou metafórica); deixa rastos de um movimento, rastos de uma passagem que foi um movimento, até porque, salvo situações extremas, a presença de um corpo é um movimento, o corpo só existe em movimento. O vazio talvez não esteja completamente vazio. Talvez o nada seja afinal mais do que nada. Marcas, restos, rastos. Pelo menos, parece que não estamos no domínio da pura abstracção, coisa assustadora.

A falta de assunto Depois de vinte anos e mais de mil escritos sobre obras e exposições de arte continua a assustar-me a ideia de ter de escrever sobre abstracção. Vou falar de quê? Da linha, da cor, da pincelada, da bidimensionalidade do suporte, da tridimensionalidade da forma… («c’mon, gimme a break»). Não há assunto. E no entanto, quando se vê uma obra ou uma exposição de Malevitch, Rothko, Ryman, Barnett Newman, Judd, Serra, não é possível dizer que não se passa nada. Eu é que não sei dizer o que se passa.

Felizmente para mim, julgo que para os artistas que aqui me convocaram a abstracção não é um substantivo mas sim um verbo, ou seja, uma acção: a acção de abstrair alguns elementos do que seria uma representação (não abstracta, isto é, figurativa) de alguma coisa cuja existência precedeu a dinâmica de abstracção e cuja memória e evocação talvez persistam na representação do que dela restou. É um movimento de editing em que, por assim dizer, teriam sido elididos os corpos; ou talvez a velocidade da passagem dos corpos tenha sido demasiado intensa para ser «captada» e tenham permanecido apenas as expressões do que teriam sido as relações entre eles. É assim que eu vejo as pinturas de Júlio Pomar incluídas nesta exposição, bem como algumas outras em que, apesar da «velocidade» da pincelada – que é movimento – que pauta o ritmo do nosso olhar, se sente ainda a passageira presença de algo que permaneceu suficientemente físico para que se lhe identifique a natureza (a coisa cujo movimento se registou: tourada, corridas de cavalos, rugby, futebol americano, confronto de rua).

Em relação aos desenhos, aos que aqui estão e a muitos outros que aqui poderiam estar, o que mais me agrada é que tudo se passa como se as linhas não servissem para definir formas, ainda menos contornos, mas fossem apenas a consequência do movimento da mão sempre correndo, mais ou menos depressa ou devagar, atrás de um movimento que, sendo o seu, é ou foi também o de corpos (geralmente corpos propriamente ditos). É a memória do movimento desses corpos que impulsiona o movimento da mão que também é, ela mesma, carne de um corpo, o do pintor. Mesmo quando as linhas desenham ou insi58

When I was invited to write a text about the Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento exhibition at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar I immediately agreed, because of the artists and because of who invited me.

I agreed, even without knowing what the theme was and, trying to set down my ideas, I thought: the theme must be the body. Knowing the work of both artists, there was no getting away from it, we were sure to end up with the body, that lump of flesh to which we are bound from the beginning to the end of our lives, and works, when we have them. Our old friend, the honest lump of flesh, might even make the task easier.

But, as might also be predicted, given the unpredictability we must expect from talented artists and curators, it was the body that got away from us and the theme turned out to be what we might describe as that which is not the body: in other words the places where there is no recognisable representation of the presence of a body. This is a way of understanding the meaning of the word “Void”, which is the title of the exhibition. The void is the place where there is no body (any more?), the place left empty through the absence of a body.

What does the body “leave” in this now empty place where it no longer is?

It leaves “marks”, as one might describe the marks “left” on a sheet or on a floor, “stains” (understood in a more or less literal or metaphorical sense); it leaves traces of a movement, traces of a passage that was a movement, not least because, other than in extreme circumstances, the presence of the body is the presence of movement; the body only exists in movement. The void is perhaps not entirely a void. Perhaps the nothingness is actually more than nothingness. Marks, vestiges, traces. At the very least, it seems we are not in the realm of pure abstraction, a frightening thing.

The lack of subject After twenty years and more than a thousand texts about art works and exhibitions, I’m still frightened by the idea of writing about abstraction. What will I talk about? Line, colour, brushstroke, the two-dimensionality of the support, the three-dimensionality of the form (c’mon, gimme a break). There’s no subject. And yet, when you see a work by or an exhibition of Malevitch, Rothko, Ryman, Barnett Newman, Judd, Serra, you can’t say that nothing happens. It’s that I don’t know how to say what happens.

Luckily for me, I believe that for the artists that have brought me here abstraction is not a noun but a verb. An action, in other words: the action of abstracting certain elements of what seems to be a representation (not abstract, figurative) of something whose existence preceded the dynamic of abstraction and whose memory and evocation perhaps persist in the representation of what remains of it. It is an editing movement in which, one might say, bodies have been elided; or perhaps the bodies have moved with such speed that they could not be “captured” and all that remains are the manifestations of what might have been the relationships between them.

This is how I see the paintings by Júlio Pomar exhibited here, as well as certain others in which, despite the “velocity” of the brushstroke – which is a movement – that sets the rhythm of our gaze, one also feels the fleeting presence of something that has remained physical enough for its nature to be identified (the thing whose movement was recorded: a bullfight, horses races, rugby, American football, boxing matches, street showdown).

In the case of the drawings – those that are here and many others that could have been – what I find most appealing is that it is as if the lines weren’t there to define forms, still less outlines, but were merely the result of the rapid or slow movement of the always active hand, through a movement of its own that is or was also that of the bodies (usually actual bodies). It is the memory of the movement of these bodies that drives the movement of 66

Numa obra de arte, fundo e forma são inesperáveis; creio que não será arriscar muito dizer que a intenção, o fundo, a história, ou como lhe queiram chamar, é sempre servida pela forma que merece. Não há «altas intenções» metidas em «formas pobres», nem pelo contrário «formas ricas» vestindo «pobres intenções».

A exposição Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento, com curadoria de Sara Antónia Matos, é pensada, desde a sua génese, como uma intervenção específica no espaço do Atelier-Museu, onde Júlio Pomar e Julião Sarmento, através de pinturas e desenhos, exploram o conceito de void – termo inglês que pode ser entendido como um espaço vazio ou esvaziado; algo que desaparece no espaço; que é vivido como perda ou privação; uma lacuna ou abertura. Dada a pluralidade de sentidos que o conceito admite, poderia dizer-se que a exposição Void* materializa – paradoxalmente – um vácuo centrífugo, procurando subtrair o espectador das habituais associações com que geralmente é defrontado numa exposição, inserindo-o antes numa formulação ambígua, necessária à concretização do facto estético. Este texto trata por isso de pensar não os discursos que geralmente se estabelecem entre as obras, mas antes as dúvidas, incertezas e instabilidades como mais-valias de um encontro com a obra de arte e as exposições, simultaneamente desconstruindo algumas convenções tradicionalmente associadas à experiência e interpretação da arte.

que «a tarefa ética do escritor moderno não é criadora mas destruidora. Destruidora da introspecção superficial, da consoladora ideia do universalmente humano, da criatividade do amador, e das frases vazias»2.

Em Void*, Julião Sarmento mostra uma série de obras sobre tela e sobre papel – registos ou inscrições do trabalho no seu atelier –, com variadas referências literárias, sem qualquer figuração. Júlio Pomar mostra uma série de obras, pinturas e desenhos, realizadas, sobretudo, na década de 1960, por exemplo pinturas sobre o metro de Paris, lutas de corpos, entre outras obras mais e menos abstractas, desenhos do natural, ilustrações para livros e projectos para pinturas – obras que, na exposição, se valorizaram pelas suas componentes e intensidades formais ou compositivas.

De gerações diferentes, paradigmaticamente antagónicas, Júlio Pomar e Julião Sarmento são, geralmente, conhecidos por terem, de maneiras muito diferentes, investido formal e conceptualmente em modos de figuração. Mas não foi pela figuração que esta exposição enveredou e se construiu. Nos longos percursos destes artistas, identificámos, de modo residual ou esporádico, tentativas ou momentos experimentais que se aproximaram, intencionalmente ou não, do âmbito da abstracção, sem nunca perder porém o referente do real. Considerou-se que essas experimentações e momentos de deriva, sendo menos comuns ou marcantes na produção destes artistas, poderiam abrir campos de leitura potenciadores de novos horizontes para o entendimento e desenvolvimento das suas obras. Assim, a exposição centrou-se nestes campos, menos expectáveis, menos conhecidos, da produção dos artistas. E, num e noutro caso, foram seleccionadas para a exposição obras com uma abstracção crescente de motivos. Além disso, a própria disposição das peças, abstraindo-se dos referentes ou conteúdos subjacentes às obras, procurou reforçar esse aspecto de fuga ao cânone, coreografando as obras plástica e pictoricamente no espaço, assim formulando também, com a própria montagem, um campo de relações abertas e de indeterminação, convocando universos «abstractos» como o de Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevitch, ou mesmo Pollock.

In a work of art, background and form are inseparable; I believe it would not be too far fetched to say that the intention, the background, the story or whatever you want to call it, is always served by the form that it deserves. There are neither “high intentions” put into “poor forms” nor, on the contrary, “rich forms” vested with “poor intentions”.

The exhibition Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento, curated by Sara Antónia Matos, has, from its inception, been conceived as a specific intervention in the Atelier-Museu’s space, where Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento explore, through paintings and drawings, the concept of the void – a term that can be understood to mean an empty or hollowed out space; something that disappears in a space; something that is experienced as loss or privation; a gap or an opening. Given the plurality of meanings that the concept allows, one might say that the exhibition Void* creates, paradoxically, a centrifuged vacuum, one that seeks to strip the spectator of the habitual associations he usually encounters in an exhibition, inserting him instead into an ambiguous formulation necessary for the realisation of an aesthetic fact. As such, rather than analysing the discourses that are normally established between the works, this text treats the doubts, uncertainties and instabilities as the fruits of an encounter with a work of art and with exhibitions, while simultaneously deconstructing a number of conventions traditionally associated with the experience and interpretation of art.

“the ethical task of the modern writer is to be not a creator but a destroyer – A destroyer of shallow inwardness, the consoling notion of the universally human, dilettantish creativity, and empty phrases.”2 In Void*, Julião Sarmento presents a series of works on canvas and paper – notes and inscriptions from his work in his studio – with various literary references, devoid of any figuration. Júlio Pomar shows a series of works, paintings and drawings made primarily in the 1960s, including paintings of the Paris underground, boxing matches, among other more or less abstract works, landscape drawings, illustrations for books and sketches for paintings – works that, in the exhibition, are valued for their components and formal or compositional intensities.

From different, paradigmatically opposing generations, Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento are generally known for having, in their own vastly different ways, made a formal and conceptual investment in modes of figuration. Figuration, however, was not what led to the creation of this exhibition. What we identified in the long trajectories of these artists were residual or sporadic attempts and moments of experimentation that, whether intentionally or not, leaned towards the sphere of abstraction without ever losing sight of the real as reference. We thought that these experimentations and moments of drifting, being less common or prominent in the artists’ production, could open up new fields of interpretation, providing potentially new horizons for understanding and developing their works. As such, the exhibition was centred around these less expected, less well known fields in the artists’ work. In both cases, works with increasingly abstract motifs were selected for the exhibition. In addition, the very placement of the pieces, abstracting them from the works’ referents or underlying content, sought to reinforce this aspect of an escape from the canon, choreographing the artworks pictorially in the space and thus creating, through the assemblage itself, a field of open, indeterminate relations, evoking “abstract” worlds such as those of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevitch and even Pollock.
