A obra de Julião Sarmento não só inclui o desenho, como é toda ela guiada pela prática do desenho. Não porque o artista tenha cadernos e cadernos de esquissos e projectos como sucede com muitos artistas (não existem, tanto quanto sei), mas porque as suas obras, nos mais diversos suportes que tem vindo a utilizar, do filme à fotografia, à pintura ou à performance, decorrem de um procedimento gráfico contínuo no qual uma plêiade de signos visuais – incluindo texto – recursivamente surge. Na maior parte dos casos, esses signos possuem uma correlação textual, podendo ser descritos com palavras que os descrevem (casas, plantas, animais, facas, corpos), outras vezes, embora mais raramente, são procedimentos gráficos híbridos que não podem ser descritos por palavras únicas (pernas/tesoura, braços/troncos) ou que implicam acções (cortar, perfurar, correr, nadar).

Na sucessão de desenhos que Julião Sarmento tem vindo a realizar desde 1966, data da obra mais recuada em exposição, outra característica se cruza com a prática do desenho e que podemos descrever como colagem. Nem sempre a colagem existe literalmente porque nalguns casos é simplesmente aludida a partir de uma estratégia de composição de elementos díspares, outras vezes é realmente colagem como procedimento de junção de elementos preexistentes aplicados sobre um suporte. Sob qualquer das duas formas, a colagem é um modelo de procedimento particularmente relevante na estratégia criativa de Julião Sarmento em geral – isto é, nos vários suportes que usa –, mas no desenho e genericamente no trabalho sobre papel adquire uma importância incontornável. A colagem possui uma tradição diversa do desenho, na medida em que ela é uma invenção das primeiras vanguardas do século XX, de Picasso e Braque até Gustav Klutsis e Schwitters (entre muitos outros), que atravessou o século XX e condensa, na sua possibilidade fraccionada, a clivagem temporal e unitária da obra, a relação com o cinema, a dissolução das imagens do quotidiano na produção imagética artística. A migração da colagem das primeiras vanguardas para as neovanguardas ocorre, sobretudo, por via da pop art britânica e norte-americana, nomeadamente na relação entre Eduardo Paolozzi e Richard Hamilton e a tradição britânica desde a permanência em Hampstead do artista alemão John Hartfield e nos EUA. na sequência de Jasper Johns e Robert Raushenberg, em qualquer dos casos desde o início da década de 1950. É nesta confluência de influências que o trabalho inicial de Julião Sarmento se forma e a colagem atravessa o seu percurso transversalmente, quer em termos compositivos, quer na relação entre título e imagem – partindo do princípio de que os títulos das suas obras são sempre relevantes, embora a ligação entre texto e imagem seja frequentemente misteriosa.

No entanto, a utilização da colagem procede em paralelo com a prática do desenho de linha, logo desde o início do seu percurso, e produzindo tipologias estáveis de representação de objectos singulares. O desenho à linha de Sarmento é frequentemente a apresentação de «uma coisa», embora, como veremos, posteriormente passe a constituir-se a partir de um conjunto de representações que configuram um «estado de coisas». As coisas que são representadas são corpos de pessoas e animais, ou, mais frequentemente, segmentos de corpos, e objectos em séries que se compõem como sistemas de esgotamento aparente de uma temática – e digo aparente porque a sua inscrição num léxico serial constitui o início da sua utilização a espaços no futuro do seu trabalho.

De facto, afirmar que existe uma continuidade permanente na prática do desenho não corresponde à verdade porque existe um hiato na documentação disponível entre 1970 e 1981. As razões são duas: por um lado, terá havido uma quantidade substancial de trabalhos sobre papel destruídos no incêndio da Galeria Nacional de Arte Moderna, em Belém, outros perdidos nas vicissitudes de um ateliê no Chiado; por outro lado, a produção de desenho de Julião Sarmento durante esse período foi sobretudo de desenho de projecto para instalações fotográficas (como, por exemplo, os desenhos preparatórios para Rosebud, de 1975), com uma recusa programática do artista em desenhar ou pintar.

A partir de 1981, Julião Sarmento regressa à prática do desenho de forma particularmente prolixa, até porque não há uma clara separação entre desenho e pintura, nomeadamente pelo uso sistemático de papel. As primeiras figurações são como que de um léxico de formas que se vão simplificando até ao surgimento de imagens muito sintéticas de objectos perfurantes que ora são identificáveis com formas fálicas, ora com seios (genericamente intitulados Os Prazeres de Alcamé, 1981), por vezes surgindo quadrículas que parecem jaulas, habitáculos, ou casas (com o título Shigula, também de 1981). Estes tópicos repetir-se-ão nos anos seguintes, sob várias formas e em várias escalas, estabelecendo um léxico que iria atravessar toda a produção gráfica de Sarmento, regressando a espaços em contextos diversos. A série seguinte de desenhos utiliza uma figuração muito mais orgânica, mais próximos da pintura, com personagens rudimentares definidas por campos cromáticos a preto, cinza, branco e terra siena queimada sobre papel de embrulho. É deste período, também, o surgimento de uma das formas que mais recorrentemente iria repetir-se, um par de meias de mulher que surge, nestas primeiras ocorrências, isolado, ou com inscrições («Os Prazeres da Alcamé», primeiro e posteriormente com a frase, também recorrente, «Às vezes gostava de morrer de prazer»). É deste período, entre 1981 e 1982, que reaparece, nos desenhos, outro dos tópicos mais persistentes da sua figuração, as figuras 208

de animais. Já tinham surgido nas suas primeiras pinturas e nas serigrafias de 1972/73, bem como nos trabalhos fotográficos (por exemplo, pássaros em D. Juan, de 1975), mas agora regressam sob a forma da obsessão, regularmente interagindo com personagens ou remetendo para uma certa domesticidade, gatos e cães que pertencem ao domínio da casa, por vezes nomeada (a palavra «Alcamé» é o nome da vivenda onde o artista residia), esta também outra das fórmulas mais persistentes dos seus desenhos. No ano seguinte, sucedem-se séries de desenhos a Ecoline que oscilam entre uma figuração deliberadamente titubeante, em suportes de pequena dimensão, em torno de personagens, por vezes com títulos que são nomes de pessoas ou a pura nomeação do representado («cão», «vaca», «ricardo»), e a série de desenhos Sismo, em suportes de maior dimensão, onde ocorre outro dos elementos que sistematicamente surgem no seu trabalho – o copo, que aparece também na sua escultura mais recente, como por exemplo em Film Noir, de 2007, ou Abstract, de 2010). A série de desenhos genericamente intitulada Sismo iria desaguar numa obra de grandes dimensões, desaparecida mas documentada fotograficamente, intitulada Terramoto, de 1983, uma das primeiras peças que, composta de cenas aparentemente não relacionadas, introduz a colagem como um processo muito próximo da edição e montagem cinematográficas, como que a sucessão de um conjunto de planos que, por si mesmos, introduzem, em cada uma das cenas, elementos que irão surgir posteriormente em desenhos individuais. É o caso da personagem que parece chorar sentada a uma mesa, e que surgirá posteriormente, as janelas góticas, o corpo masculino que parece nadar num espaço sem contorno nem referência. Esta é uma outra das características regulares do trabalho de Julião Sarmento, só interrompida na segunda metade da década de 1980 e que possui nos desenhos o seu fio condutor: o elo que une a produção de Sarmento da primeira metade da década de 1980 e o trabalho posterior a 1990 – e normalmente são salientadas as diferenças, mais do que as continuidades – radica na possibilidade de figurar elementos (chamemos-lhe «corpos» no sentido amplo que Deleuze atribui ao termo) que gravitam num espaço sem tempo nem referente contextual. Creio que esta constante (e já aludiremos ao seu contrário) possui duas referências pictóricas que, certamente, ocupam um lugar fundamental na galeria de autores que povoam o seu imaginário: Velázquez e Manet, o segundo já emulando o primeiro, aliás. O que fica de uma personagem que se liberta do tempo, que se recorta como uma figura sem fundo, uma imagem reificada num suporte?

O carácter linguístico de construção de um léxico passa a ocupar o espaço poético que o artista define, a sua forma de proceder. Se entendida dessa forma, a matriz linguística do trabalho de Sarmento – a sua timeline – permite compreender que, entre os trabalhos 209

conceptuais desenvolvidos em suporte fílmico (como Pernas, de 1975), ou fotográfico (como Untitled (Strip), do mesmo ano) e os desenhos expressivos e pictóricos, existe uma recorrência de procedimento, uma repetição não estilística, mas gramatical e lexical.

Curiosamente, os trabalhos em desenho de 1984 e 1985 viriam a introduzir um carácter narrativo que implica, nalguns casos, a constituição de cenas mais declaradamente narrativas – como se a figura tutelar de Goya, intensa, densa e negra, tivesse ocupado o espaço do seu imaginário, como em Estratégias de Sobrevivência, ou Madame Sans Gêne, ambos de 1984. Recentemente, numa conferência, o historiador e teórico da arquitectura Jean-Louis Cohen salientava que o modelo da referência ou da citação é inadequado para compreender a forma como muitos arquitectos (mas creio que o modelo é extrapolável para o campo da arte) incorporam no seu trabalho gestos arquitectónicos recolhidos noutras experiências arquitectónicas e artísticas, propondo um modelo muito mais interessante de frottage. Não se trata aqui de qualquer similitude entre o procedimento plástico introduzido por Max Ernst, mas de entender o seu procedimento conceptual de incluir a impressão de um preexistente que assoma como uma marca, amiúde um palimpsesto de marcas. Creio que este modelo teórico é útil para poder entender o procedimento de Julião Sarmento na forma como produz «frottages» de imagens colhidas no mundo, na obra de outros artistas, em filmes, textos literários ou teóricos, de uma forma omnívora, mas construtora de um léxico. Algumas vezes estas imagens são avatares de imagens pictóricas (de Mondrian, Lissitzky, Duchamp via Man Ray, por exemplo). Esta construção é produzida de duas formas: como uma diacronia na qual os signos migram de trabalho para trabalho (como um acorde que é sistematicamente utilizado), e como uma sincronia que produz, em cada momento, um estado de coisas. Esta expressão, introduzida por Gilles Deleuze no famoso texto sobre Lewis Carroll incluído em Logique du Sens, é referida ao pensamento estóico e refere a qualidade de «presente permanente» que é a temporalidade dos corpos no espaço e das suas relações, os «estados de coisas». A descrição parece ajustar-se sobremaneira à metodologia de trabalho de Julião Sarmento, sobretudo se tivermos em consideração as alterações que o seu trabalho em desenho iria sofrer a partir do final da década de 1980 e que, aliás, vêm confirmar os indícios depositados desde o seu início. Este presente permanente começa a anunciar-se no uso em colagem de imagens fotográficas na segunda metade da década, bem como uma densificação dos signos visuais, por vezes combinados com texto – como as sucessivas alusões à noite de reis, no que parece ser uma alusão tanto shakespeariana como vernacular –, ou a persistência, mais uma vez, de objectos cortantes, como facas, punhais, adagas, por vezes empunhados por uma 210

mão que não decorre de um corpo explícito, mas de um outro intuído. É também desta altura o surgimento de construções arquitectónicas (pirâmides, escadas, degraus) que se relacionam com imagens fotográficas colhidas em jornais (como acontece na série Golpe de Misericórdia, de 1988 e adjacentes) e, sobretudo, o aparecimento de uma personagem feminina que levanta as saias – como uma oferta ou uma afronta –, que merece ser destacada porque viria a tornar-se a matriz da sistemática representação do feminino na sua obra, em La Chronique Scandaleuse, de 1987. É também do mesmo ano a série Tales on Dirty Realism, cujo nome de eco literário a Raymond Carver, Richard Ford ou Cormac McCarthy, afinidades electivas de Sarmento, propõe uma nova acepção das suas constelações referenciais a partir da presença marcante da palavra. As últimas obras sobre papel da década apresentam frequentemente uma efígie do artista ameaçado por uma faca, numa das raras séries em que a autor-representação surge (tinha aparecido no trabalho fotográfico e viria a surgir, também a partir da colagem fotográfica já nos anos 2000).

Após uma incursão por desenhos abstrcatos, claramente ligados a pinturas do mesmo período, a série Dias de Escuro e de Luz, que inaugura a década seguinte, representa uma aparente transformação radical no desenho de Julião Sarmento, sobretudo pela enorme contenção formal e cromática, e pelo estabelecimento de uma continuidade produtiva que iria prolongar-se pelas próximas duas décadas do seu percurso. O que se passa nos desenhos que acompanham o surgimento das pinturas brancas é, no entanto, a continuação do processo anterior, agora reduzido ao osso seco do desenho, repetido, corrigido e reajustado, centrando-se sobre a possibilidade de reactivar permanentemente tópicos lexicais que vinham do passado (a figura feminina, os animais, os copos, as facas), agora declaradamente definindo situações e, pela tónica nas acções, propondo uma coreografia de pequenos dramas nos quais as personagens femininas possuem sempre o poder transformador. É dessa energia que emanam as personagens femininas que fazem gravitar em seu redor todos os outros agentes da figuração proposta por Sarmento que nascem as constelações de tópicos que configuram a necessidade de elementos ligados à morfologia do corpo – as cadeiras e mesas, que permearam o seu trabalho escultórico, têm no desenho a sua primeira expressão, como marcas de uma ausência. Uma das mais notáveis séries de desenhos de 1990 é o grande conjunto intitulado O Raio sobre o Lápis, em torno de Maria Gabriela Llansol, quase um mapa de grande parte das tipologias que, ou vindo do passado, ou abrindo o caminho para os anos subsequentes, definiriam uma grande constelação na qual a casa e o lugar, bem como a domesticidade e a morte, são tematizadas. De facto, a presença da casa, quer como abrigo, quer como planta, passa a ser uma presença constante nos desenhos 211

de Julião Sarmento, cruzando-se com outros tópicos, como as referências botânicas, as citações fílmicas, ao longo dos anos 2000 até ao presente. No entanto, as primeiras ocorrências determinantes situam-se nestes anos iniciais da década de 1990, quer nas duas séries referidas, quer no desenho Wittgenstein’s House (modified), uma versão transformada da planta da casa desenhada pelo filósofo e pelo arquicteto Paul Engelmann, a quem a irmã do primeiro encomendou o projecto em 1925. As plantas de casas viriam a repetir-se na obra gráfica de Sarmento não só porque o espaço arquitectónico lhe é muito importante, mas também porque a casa é o lugar da dilatação do presente contínuo que tanto lhe interessa. Repare-se, no entanto, que não é necessariamente a arquitectura erudita que interessa a Sarmento: se essa presença é regular em trabalhos que recuperam imagens de casas (são sempre casas e, pelo menos a partir da década 1990, nenhum outro tipo de construção arquitectónica) de Richard Neutra, ou de ícones da arquitectura modernista, a vernacularidade da casa reduzida à sua expressão mais simples ocupa um lugar permanente, como é o caso da série Cerco, de 1993, que parte de duas pequenas casas à entrada de Beja, num projecto que se estende à pintura, à escultura e à gravura. O surgimento da casa, a princípio como planta de arquitectura e, mais tarde, como imagem (o que é válido para os desenhos recentes que usam imagens fotográficas de arquitectura em relação com outras figurações desenhadas) parece remeter para um lugar de intimidade, para uma domesticidade do habitar que implica um lugar de origem e pertença e que se confronta com situações de estranheza nos corpos, naquela que é, porventura, a mais psicanalítica das constelações que Julião Sarmento propõe. A oposição entre a familiaridade da habitação e os seus objectos (mesas, cadeiras, candeeiros, copos, figurações botânicas) e a estranheza do corpo que se confronta com um objecto cortante, ou que ostenta as marcas de uma mutilação, ou que se oferece ao desejo, possui uma tensão entre o malsão e o familiar que, necessariamente, convoca Freud e o seu texto de 1919 sobre a estranheza. Mas essa constelação será também aquela que afirma de forma mais intensa a melancolia que se instaura a partir do permanente presente que a sua obra propõe, como se tudo o que for figurado se afirmasse como um engrama cuja ferida nunca sara. 1995 seria também o ano de um alargado conjunto de desenhos particularmente sintéticos que apresentam acções de carácter explicitamente sexual, sobretudo pela nomeação das acções representadas – Licking and Blowing, Sucking, Touching, Licking and Coming –, mas também é o momento em que surge outra das mais marcantes recorrências do seu trabalho em desenho, as mãos. Sempre me interroguei sobre a presença tão regular das mãos na sua figuração a partir de 1995. Em primeiro lugar, são mãos que agarram corpos, de identidade sexual dúbia e cuja marca é a mutilação 212

dos dedos, ou que repousam noutros corpos fazendo vibrar uma tensão sexual muitas vezes não explícita mas fortemente presente (como é o caso de Touching, referido acima).

A expressividade das mãos que se entrelaçam inicia-se neste período, mas viria a ter um desenvolvimento intenso nos trabalhos posteriores, sobretudo a partir de 1996 e dos desenhos nos quais os dedos das mãos perfuram outras mãos, ou pulsos (como em Stir of, desse mesmo ano), num percurso de autoflagelação que tem eco nos processos auto-eróticos presentes noutros desenhos. É também deste período a produção das ilustrações para Justine et Juliette, de Sade, que constituem o maior conjunto de obras pornográficas no conjunto do trabalho de Sarmento, mas também o conjunto de desenhos – e as gravuras deles resultantes – da série Dublin-Trieste, que possui como fonte a correspondência entre James Joyce e a sua mulher, Nora, bem como o outro conjunto, também de matrizes para um portefólio de gravuras que é The House With Upstairs in It, série que inclui também um conjunto de pinturas e que deu origem a uma exposição fundamental no seu percurso.

As pinturas desta série, aliás, incluem – algumas – desenhos infantis ampliados para uma escala monumental, podendo ser incluídas na categoria de desenhos, bem como nas colagens, já que são recolhas de desenhos do seu filho, na altura com quatro anos, trabalhados no sentido de perderem toda a expressividade. O segundo grande conjunto de mãos pertence à série Veneno, a continuação de Carpe Diem, do mesmo ano de 1998. A diferença destas séries é a sua convocação do espectador, ou a atitude directamente teatral – no sentido que lhe atribui Diderot –, em contraposição ao carácter absorto das personagens das séries anteriores. Repare-se que a utilização de desenhos de mãos prolongar-se-ia (e sem ter em consideração os desenhos em que mãos executam acções com objectos) pelos anos 2000, sobretudo em composições que incluem colagens fotográficas, dez anos após a inserção desse dispositivo.

Pelo meio, no entanto, ainda na década anterior, a importância da palavra viria a ocupar o espaço fundamental numa série que não possui paralelo na obra e que consiste em peças puramente textuais, em frases escritas sobre fundo azul, cuja origem nunca é decifrada pelo autor e cujo título é a mera repetição da frase escrita com uma letra serifada em caixa alta sobre o plano cromático, retiradas ainda à correspondência entre Joyce e Nora, porventura um modelo de sexualidade literária que se adapta particularmente bem às necessidades de construção de uma narratividade da tensão sexual no interior do seu trabalho, como um motor primeiro, mas também literário e sombrio.

A inclusão de texto que acompanha desenhos e/ou imagens fotográficas embebidas no plano da representação seria, por fim, uma das componentes mais persistentes do seu 213

trabalho posterior, nomeadamente a enorme série What Makes a Writer Great, que se desenvolve a partir do confronto de uma frase desenhada contraposta a uma imagem fotográfica recortada da imprensa. Esta matriz de cruzamento entre texto desenhado, ou desenho de mãos, ou figurações vegetais (árvores ou plantas) e imagens fotográficas vem a desenvolver-se de forma constante e regular até trabalhos muito recentes que possuem citações imagéticas e textuais fílmicas, nomeadamente em relação aos clássicos do Film Noir, que é, aliás, o título de uma longa série de desenhos de 2007.

Os trabalhos mais recentes de Julião Sarmento têm vindo a introduzir um outro dispositivo técnico, a imagem serigrafada posteriormente intervencionada, sobretudo a série dedicada a escritores, uma das mais directas e explícitas «articulações imagéticas sobre o realismo e a abstracção na sua estratégia figurativa, já que a imagem de fundo, onde por vezes se inscreve um texto ou uma cor, é completamente figurativa – trata-se de uma impressão «frottada» do chão do ateliê – e simultaneamente abstracta porque qualquer elemento é, em si mesmo, irreconhecível. O dispositivo serigráfico seria ainda utilizado nos desenhos que derivam da obra em torno de O Naufrágio do Medusa, de Géricault, sob o título O Fim do Mundo, de 2017, que se viria a expandir para um mapeamento de referências gráficas do passado, nos quais a inclusão de texto, o recurso a reproduções de elementos da história da pintura e a tónica numa temática relacionada com a tragédia e a redenção quase apontam para uma possibilidade de explicitação da recursividade de todo o seu trabalho.

Como um permanente labirinto circular, ou um loop incessante, a produção em desenho de Julião Sarmento é toda mutuamente contemporânea, não define nenhuma sucessividade senão na necessidade descritiva de quem sobre ela escreve. E, por isso, esta exposição (e este livro) foi construída em sentido anti-horário, como uma linha da vida que se vê sempre a partir de um ponto de vista presente, mas que, vista daqui, não propõe nenhuma nostalgia porque tudo gravita no mesmo presente dos corpos e da sua mistura, no que vem e no que vai, que reaparece na simultaneidade entre útero e tumba que constitui a frágil matéria de uma possível timeline.

Julião Sarmento’s body of work not such much includes drawing as it is fundamentally guided by it as a practice. It is not that, like many other artists, Sarmento has many sketch books and project books (as far as I know, he doesn’t), but that his work in a wide range of media, from film to photography to painting to performance, results from a continuous graphic procedure in which a plethora of visual signs – including text – recur. In most cases, these signs have a textual correlation, and can be described by words that name them (houses, plants, animals, blades, bodies); at other times, though less frequently, they are hybrid graphic procedures that can only be described by verbal compounds (legs/scissors, arms/trunks) or through actions (cutting, drilling, running, swimming).

The body of drawing that Julião Sarmento has produced since 1966 (the earliest date of any piece exhibited) intersects with another feature we might describe as collage. That said, this is not always collage in the literal sense, as in some cases it is simply implied in a strategy for the composition of disparate elements, while at other times it is indeed collage proper that is used to join up pre-existing elements on a given medium. In either case, collage is a particularly relevant model for Julião Sarmento’s global creative strategy – i.e., across the various media he employs –, but it acquires a central importance in his drawings and works on paper in general. Collage has a different technical tradition from drawing, inasmuch as it is an invention of the earliest avant-gardes of the twentieth century, from Picasso and Braque to Gustav Klutsis and Schwitters (among many others). It can be found throughout the century and, in its fractionated potential, condenses the temporal and unitary cleavage of the work, its relationship with cinema and the dissolution of everyday images in the production of artistic imagery. The migration of collage from the earliest avant-gardes to the neo-avant-gardes occurs mainly through British and American pop art in the early 1950s, particularly the association of Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton with the British tradition since German artist John Hartfield’s stay in Hampstead, and in the USA in the wake of Jasper Johns and Robert Raushenberg. It is in this confluence of influences that the early work of Julião Sarmento is formed, with collage traversing his artistic career, both in terms of composition and in the relationship between title and image – assuming that the titles of his works are always relevant, even if connections between the two are so often mysterious.

Nonetheless, from his earliest works, the use of collage proceeds in parallel with the practice of line drawing, producing stable typologies of representation of unique objects. Sarmento’s line drawings often present “a thing”, although, as we shall see later, these will become a set of representations that constitutes a “state of affairs”. The “things” represented are the bodies of people and animals or, more often, segments of bodies and series of objects which form systems of seeming exhaustion of a theme – and I say seeming because their inscription within a serialised lexicon marks the beginning of their occasional use in the future of his work.

In fact, it would not be true to say there is a permanent continuity in his drawing practice, owing to a gap in the available documentation between 1970 and 1981. There are two reasons for this: firstly, a substantial amount of work on paper was destroyed in the fire at the National Gallery of Modern Art, in Belém (Lisbon), while others were lost in the vicissitudes of his Chiado studio (also in Lisbon); secondly, Julião Sarmento’s production of drawing in this period was mostly made up of project drawings for photographic installations (such as the preparatory drawings for Rosebud, 1975), with the artist’s programmatic refusal to draw or paint. From 1981, Julião Sarmento returned to the practice of drawing in a particularly prolix way, not least because there is no clear separation between drawing and painting in terms of his systematic use of paper. His first figurations are something of a lexicon of forms that becomes progressively simplified until the appearance of highly synthetic images of piercing objects that at times suggest phallic forms or breasts (generically titled Os Prazeres de Alcamé [The Pleasures of Alcamé], 1981), with the occasional appearance of grids suggesting cages, compartments or houses (under the title Shigula, also from 1981). These themes would be repeated in following years in various forms and at various scales, establishing a lexicon that would traverse Sarmento’s entire graphic production and occasionally reappear in diverse contexts. The figuration of the next series of drawings is much more organic, closer to painting, with rudimentary characters defined by chromatic fields of black, grey, white and burnt sienna on wrapping paper. Also from this period is one of his most recurring forms, a pair of women’s stockings that are presented, in these initial manifestations, isolated or with inscriptions (initially “Os Prazeres da Alcamé” [The Pleasures of Alcamé], and subsequently with the sentence, also recurrent, “Às vezes gostava de morrer de prazer” [Sometimes I would like to die of pleasure]). It is in this period between 1981 and 1982 that animals, another of his most persistent figurative subjects, reappeared in the drawings. They had already featured in his early paintings and screen-prints of 1972-73, as well as in photographic works (such as the birds in D. Juan,1975), yet they now return almost as an obsession, regularly interacting with characters or evoking a certain domesticity, with cats and dogs that belong to the domain of the house, sometimes named (the word “Alcamé” was the name of the artist’s residence at the time), another of the most persistent formulas in his drawings. In the following year, one series of ecoline drawings followed another, oscillating between a deliberately hesitant figuration around characters, on small support media, sometimes with titles derived from the names of people or from the figures represented (“dog”, “cow”, “ricardo”), and the series of drawings Sismo [Seism], on larger support media, which feature another of the elements that systematically appear in his work – the drinking glass, which also appears in his most recent sculptures, such as Film Noir, from 2007, and Abstract, from 2010. The Sismo series of drawings would flow into a larger-scale work, now lost but photographically documented, 218

entitled Terramoto [Earthquake] (1983), one of the first pieces that, composed of apparently unrelated scenes, introduces collage as a process very similar to that of film editing, in a succession of plans that introduce elements that will later appear in individual drawings. Such is the case of the character seated at a table and appearing to cry, the Gothic windows, the male body that seems to be swimming in a space without outline or reference point. This is another of the regular features of Julião Sarmento’s work, which forms a central thread in his drawings and which was only interrupted in the second half of the 1980s: the link between Sarmento’s production in the first half of the 1980s and work post-1990 – and the differences are usually emphasised rather than the continuities – stems from the possibility of illustrating elements (let’s call them “bodies” in the broad Deleuzean sense) that gravitate in a space without time or contextual reference. I believe that this constant (and we will soon deal with its opposite) has two pictorial references that certainly occupy a fundamental place in the gallery of artists populating his imaginary: Velázquez and Manet (the latter already emulating the former). What remains of a character who frees himself from time, whose outline is like that a bottomless figure, an image reified in a support? The linguistic character of the construction of a lexicon will occupy the poetic space defined by the artist as his new pathway. If understood in this way, the linguistic matrix of Sarmento’s work – his timeline – gives us to understand that, among the conceptual filmic works (such as Pernas [Legs], 1975), or photographic works (such as Untitled [Strip] from the same year) and his expressive and pictorial drawings, there is a recurrence of procedure, a nonstylistic but grammatical and lexical repetition. Curiously, the 1984 and 1985 drawings would introduce a narrative character that implies, in some cases, the constitution of more overtly narrative scenes – as if Goya’s intense, dense, black tutelary figure had occupied the space of his imaginary, as in Estratégias de Sobrevivência [Survival Strategies], or Madame Sans Gêne, both from 1984. At a recent conference, architectural historian and theorist Jean-Louis Cohen pointed out (and I believe his observation can be extrapolated to the field of art) that the model of reference or quotation is inadequate to understanding how many architects incorporate architectural gestures collected from other architectural and artistic experiences into their work, proposing a much more interesting model of frottage. The question here is not whether there is any similarity with the visual procedure introduced by Max Ernst, but rather to understand his conceptual procedure of including the impression of a pre-existing object that emerges as a mark, often a palimpsest of marks. I believe this is a useful theoretical model for understanding Julião Sarmento’s procedure for producing “frottages” of images collected from the world, the work of other artists, films and literary or theoretical texts, in an omnivorous way, but constructive of a lexicon. Sometimes these images are avatars of pictorial images (from Mondrian, Lissitzky, Duchamp via Man Ray, for example). This construction is produced in two ways: as a diachrony, 219

with signs migrating from one work to another (like the systematic use of a chord), and as a synchrony, producing at each moment a state of affairs. This expression, introduced by Gilles Deleuze in his famous text on Lewis Carroll in Logique du Sens, is a reference to Stoic philosophy and refers to the quality of a “permanent present”, which is the temporality of bodies in space and their relations, the “states of things”. The description seems very much in line with Julião Sarmento’s working methodology, especially if we take into account the changes that his drawings would undergo from the end of the 1980s and which, indeed, confirm something that was present in them since the beginning. This permanent present begins to emerge in the collage of photographic images in the second half of the decade, alongside a densification of visual signs, sometimes combined with text – such as the successive allusions to Twelfth Night, in what appears to be both a Shakespearean and a vernacular allusion – or in the persistence, once again, of sharp objects such as knives, blades, daggers, sometimes wielded by a hand that does not emerge from an explicit body, but from an intuited one. Also from this time is the emergence of architectural constructions (pyramids, stairs, steps) that relate to photographic images collected from newspapers (as in the series Golpe de Misericórdia [Coup de Grace], from around 1988) and particularly the appearance of a female character who lifts her skirts, as either an offering or an affront, and which is worthy of emphasis insofar as it would eventually become the core of the systematic representation of the feminine in his work La Chronique Scandaleuse, from 1987.

From the same year is the series Tales on Dirty Realism, whose name is a literary reference to Raymond Carver, Richard Ford and Cormac McCarthy, Sarmento’s elective affinities, and which proposes a new understanding of his referential constellations through the marked presence of the written word. The last works on paper of the 1980s often present an effigy of the artist threatened by a knife, in one of the few series featuring self-representation (it appeared before in his photographic work, and would again appear in photographic collages during the 2000s).

After an incursion into abstract drawing, clearly linked to paintings from the same period, the series Dias de Escuro e de Luz [Days of Darkness and of Light], which inaugurates the following decade, represents an apparently radical transformation in the drawing of Julião Sarmento, mainly stemming from the enormous formal and chromatic restraint and from the establishment of a productive continuity that would endure for the next two decades of his career.

That which occurs in the drawings accompanying the appearance of white paintings, however, is the continuation of a previous process, now reduced to the dry bone of drawing, repeated, corrected and readjusted, focusing on the possibility of permanently reactivating lexical topics from the past (the female figure, the animals, the glasses, the knives), now clearly defining situations and, through the emphasis in actions, proposing a choreography of small dramas in which the female characters always possess transformational power. It is from this energy that emanate 220

the feminine characters who make all other agents of the figuration proposed by Sarmento gravitate around them, and from which are born the constellations of topics that configure the necessity of elements linked to the morphology of the body – the chairs and tables that permeated his sculptural work have in these drawings their first expression, as markers of absence. One of the most remarkable series of drawings from 1990 is the large set entitled O Raio sobre o Lápis [The Ray Over the Pencil] about Maria Gabriela Llansol, which is almost a map of the typologies that, either coming from the past or paving the way for subsequent years, would define a great constellation in which house and place, domesticity and death are thematically explored.

Indeed, the presence of the house, either as a shelter or as a floor plan, becomes a constant in Julião Sarmento’s drawings, intersecting with other topics, such as botanical references and film quotations, from 2000 to the present. Nonetheless, the earliest key instances of this were in the early 1990s, both in the two referred series and in the Wittgenstein’s House (modified) drawing, a transformed version of the house plan designed by the philosopher and architect Paul Engelmann, to whom Wittgenstein’s sister commissioned the project in 1925. The floor plans of houses were to be repeated in Sarmento’s graphic work, not only because architectonic space is very important to him, but also because the house is the setting of the expansion of the continuous present that interests him so much. It should be noted, however, that it is not necessarily scholarly architecture that interests Sarmento: if houses by Richard Neutra or other icons of modernist architecture are a regular presence in his works (and, from the 1990s onwards at least, they are always houses), the vernacular of the house reduced to its simplest expression occupies a permanent place, as is the case of the series Cerco [Encirclement] (1993), which is based on two small houses at the entrance of Beja, a project that includes painting, sculpture and engraving. The emergence of the house, originally in the form of architectural plans and later as an image (which applies to recent drawings using photographic images of architecture set in relation to other drawn figures), seems to refer to a place of intimacy, to a domesticity of inhabiting that implies a place of origin and belonging and that is confronted with situations of bodily strangeness, in what is, perhaps, the most psychoanalytic of Julião Sarmento’s proposed constellations. The opposition between the familiarity of the dwelling and its objects (tables, chairs, lamps, glasses, botanical figurations) and the strangeness of the body that is confronted with a sharp object, or that bears the marks of mutilation, or that offers itself to desire, displays a tension between the harmful and the familiar, which necessarily invokes Freud and his 1919 text on strangeness. But this constellation will also be the one that affirms in a more intense way the melancholy established by the permanent present proposed in his work, as if everything that is figured was affirmed like an engram whose wound will never heal. 1995 was also the year of an extended set of particularly synthetic drawings that present explicitly sexual actions, especially in terms of the names describing the actions 221

represented – Licking and Blowing, Sucking, Touching, Licking and Coming –, but this is also the moment when another of the most striking recurrences of his work arises: hands. I have always wondered about the frequent figurative presence of hands in the artist’s work since 1995.

In the first place, they are hands that grab bodies, of ambiguous sexual identity and whose mark is the mutilation of the fingers, or which rest on other bodies, vibrating a sexual tension often not so much explicit as strongly present (as is the case of Touching, mentioned above). The expressiveness of the interlocking hands begins at this time, but would become more intense in later work, especially after 1996 and the drawings in which the fingers of hands pierce other hands or wrists (as in Stir of, from the same year), in a course of self-flagellation that echoes the autoerotic processes present in other drawings. Also from this period is the production of the illustrations for Sade’s Justine et Juliette, which constitute the largest set of pornographic pieces in Sarmento’s work as a whole; the set of drawings – and the resulting prints – of the Dublin-Trieste series, which is based on the correspondence between James Joyce and his wife, Nora; and also the series of matrices for the portfolio of prints The House With Upstairs in It, a series that also includes a set of paintings and that gave rise to one of the most important exhibitions of his career. Some of the paintings in this series also include children’s drawings enlarged to a monumental scale, which can be considered both drawings and collages, in the sense that they are drawings by the artist’s four-year old son, which are worked until losing all expressiveness. The second large set of hands belongs to the series Veneno [Poison], the continuation of Carpe Diem, from the same year of 1998. The difference between these series is their summoning of the viewer, or their directly theatrical attitude – in the sense given to the term by Diderot –, in contrast to the absorbed nature of the characters of previous series. It should be noted that the use of drawings of hands would be extended (and without taking into account the drawings in which hands perform actions with objects) to the years after 2000, especially in compositions that include photographic collages, ten years after the artist’s first use of this device.

Meanwhile, still in the previous decade, the importance of the word would come to occupy a fundamental space in a series without parallel in his work and consisting of purely textual pieces, with sentences written on a blue background. The origin of these sentences is never revealed by the author, while the title is merely a repetition of the sentence written in upper-case serif font on a chromatic plane, again taken from the correspondence between Joyce and Nora, perhaps constituting a model of literary sexuality particularly well suited to the narrative construction of sexual tension within his work, a primary impulse but also literary and sombre.

The inclusion of text accompanying drawings and/or photographic images embedded in the representational plane would be one of the most persistent components of his later work, particularly in the large-scale series What Makes a Writer Great, which is developed from 222

the juxtaposition of sentences drawn against cut-out photographic press images. This matrix of intersections between drawn text, drawings of hands, vegetal figurations (trees or plants) and photographic images was developed constantly and regularly until very recent works with quotations of imagery and text taken from movies, particularly Film Noir classics, which is indeed the title of a long series of drawings from 2007.

Julião Sarmento’s more recent works have introduced altered screen-printed images as another technical device, especially in the series dedicated to writers, one of the most direct and explicit image articulations between realism and abstraction in his figurative strategy. These feature background images, at times inscribed with text or colour, that are simultaneously figurative (as a “frottage” impression of the studio floor) and abstract (with every element in and of itself unrecognisable). The screen-print device would also be used in the drawings from the work about Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa, entitled O Fim do Mundo [The End of the World], from 2017, that would expand to a mapping of past graphical references in which the inclusion of text, the use of reproductions of elements from the history of painting, and the emphasis on a theme related to tragedy and redemption almost point to a possibility of exposing the recursiveness in all his work.

Like a permanent circular labyrinth or an incessant loop, Julião Sarmento’s drawing production as a whole is mutually contemporary, it doesn’t define a successive order, which only appears in the descriptive need of those who write about it. And so, this exhibition (and this book) was constructed in an anti-clockwise manner, as a life pathway that is always seen from the point of view of the present moment, but which, from here, offers no nostalgia, as everything gravitates in the same present moment of the bodies and their intermingling, in the back and forth that reappears in the simultaneity between the uterus and the grave, and that constitutes the fragile material of a possible timeline.
