It is my very great pleasure to welcome you to Sir William Perkins’s School for our Spring Concert. This evening’s performance has been curated in an effort to raise awareness of matters around climate change, sustainability and kindness to all. I hope you will find it an enjoyable, thought-provoking evening.
The performances this evening showcase the work of some of our ensembles here at SWPS. Rehearsing each week, these groups comprise musicians from all year groups and all abilities Being part of an ensemble is an opportunity for students to join up with other like-minded individuals, working together to create something special.
Our new and growing SWPS Community Choir (open to school staff and family members of current and former SWPS students) will also feature in our concert this evening, performing alongside our talented students in order to explore an entirely new sound world.
The theme of this evening is climate change, sustainability and kindness to all - matters which go to the heart of the SWPS ethos. In a demonstration of the school’s cross-disciplinary approach to learning and engagement, some of our Key Stage 5 students will be delivering speeches on the topic of sustainability: a subject in which I know they have a passionate interest.
The final item in our concert is Christopher Tin’s epic ‘Baba Yetu’ Performed by Vox Choir, Melba Choir, Symphony Orchestra and SWPS Community Choir, this is by far the most challenging item in our programme and requires the singers to perform their lyrics in Swahili. As part of their preparation, our students have spent time learning about this beautiful language from Donovan McGrath, a tutor at the African Studies Centre at the University of London, so that they may present a more informed and stylish performance. We are most grateful to Donovan for his expertise and guidance
I am so very proud of every student participating in the concert this evening. They are all truly talented and we look forward to seeing where their talent and hard work will take them in the future
