Introduction My Gender My Pride

History

The theme of this year's pride is ''My Gender My Pride''. Everybody has the right to feel free and be who they want to be. However, in reality this is unfortunately not always the case. The past couple of decades the focus was put mainly on ''you can love who you want to love'' but now the time has come to focus on ''be how you are feeling''. In other words, it is about time that we pay attention to diversity of gender identities and our right to self determination!

The Stonewall Inn in New York was one of few places where homosexual people could be themselves. On the 28th of June 1969 the Stonewall Inn was invaded by the police. This invasion resulted in a big riot and this riot is considered as the beginning of the LGBTQ+ community.

Seven years after the Stonewall riots there was the first big demonstration in The Netherlands organised by the International Lesbische Alliantie. From then on the event was hosted every year and in 1979 it adopted the name ''Roze Zaterdag''. In 2006 the name changed to Amsterdam Pride. Events Fabulous Silent Disco Walk 5 August - Museumplein

Together you will strut your stuff through the streets & get jiggy to the sound of cheesy tunes and cool beats. Make sure to wear your most colourful and flamboyant clothes and join a dancing rainbow through the streets of Amsterdam! Singing along is not required but encouraged in the Fabulous Pride Silent Disco Walk!

Westerkerk in Pride Colors 31 July - Westerkerk

Just like last year the Westerkerk will be light up from inside with the pride rainbow colors.

The result is an unique atmosphere both from the outside and the inside! The church will be open for all visitors from 20:00-22:30 on the 5th of August.

Pride Closing Party 7 August 2022 - Dam Square

All scenes come together for the official closing party on the last Sunday afternoon of Pride weekend. The outdoor stage in front of the Royal Palace at Dam Square, where many famous Dutch and international artists are performing!

Can you tell me something about the JimmyPaul x Bratz collection?

If you were born around the 2000s you will definitely know Bratz dolls probably as the tacky sisters of Barbie with short clothes and loads of make-up. They started with four dolls all from a different ethnicity.

At one point the hype of the Bratz dolls was over, but last year in 2021 the Bratz dolls have made a come back. Two of the dolls came out of the closet, one as bisexual and one as lesbian. The two dolls started dating each other and this broke the internet world wide and this immediately got the attention of the LGBTQIA+ community.

''The tacky sisters of Barbie'' Because of the popularity gained again, last year an Italian designer designed clothes for the Bratz dolls and this was a huge success. This resulted in that they want to do a collaboration with different designers each year.

This year the Dutch designer JimmyPaul was asked to design clothes for the dolls and he even designed a collection for humans. This way you can channel your inner Bratz doll!

You might know JimmyPaul from his cartoon designs, he made a collection for HelloKitty and the Care Bears.

In May 2022 the first launch party of the collaboration of JimmyPaul x Bratz was held in Los Angeles during the start of Pride month. In June it was time for Amsterdam and the launch party of JimmyPaul x Bratz was celebrated right here at X BANK! The special thing about the launch here in The Netherlands is that X BANK is the only physical selling point of the JimmyPaul x Bratz collection. Even people from Portugal came to buy the dolls and some t-shirts!

What is your favorite piece of the collection?

My favorite item from the collection would be the jumpsuit made from sequins with the iconic Bratz doll lips.

What does Pride mean to you?

Pride to me means freedom. Be who you want to be and then I am not even talking about who you love but also be who you want to be. For example, if you want to walk around with Pink hair or as a boy walk around in a tutu to me that is what Pride is all about. You accept somebody for who they are and respect them even if you might not agree with it, but you leave the person how they are.

Do you have any plans during Pride week?

Last weekend you could've found me at Milkshake Festival! I have been going there every year so I definitely had to be there again this year. Unfortunately, during the canal parade I am not here so this year I cannot see the parade, but you will for sure find me in the Regulierdwarsstraat.

Do you have any tips for where to go during Pride week?

You definitely have to go and taste the atmosphere during the canal parade. If you stand somewhere at the canal where it is super busy with people, you will experience that the atmosphere is fantastic! The whole route of the canal parade from Central Station towards Amstel or even at Prinsengracht. Around these areas you will see the most diverse people but also families with children, locals and the LGBTQIA+ community from all over the world.

If you want to really party among the LGBTQIA+ community you should go to the Reguliersdwarsstraat.

Stichting Pride Amsterdam

This organization is one of the biggest within Amsterdam! They organize great events and you can even register your own event related to LGBTIQA+ together with them. Do you want to be part of a very special event?

Amnesty International

Amnesty International fights for the human rights. They also fight for Pride internationally, in countries with less freedom than The Netherlands. You can become an Amnesty International member, you can donate, you can work voluntarily and so much more! Check out their website to find out how to contribute in different ways. link to website

Homomonument At Homomonument you can contribute for instance by participating in voluntary work.

Examples of voluntary work are: working behind the bar during the street parties, help with fundraising or thinking about new activities. They also offer the possibility to donate to this organization. link to website
