Frugal Family Fun: Dual Décor All Season Accents that are Fun for the Whole Family

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but decorating for the season can also be the most hectic, expensive and stressful. Hours spent detangling string lights, money spent on mums only to toss them at first frost and kids who can’t put their electronic devices down can wear anybody out. Don’t ditch the decorating yet. These fun and family-friendly finds will keep your home looking festive and your kids active without draining your finances.

The warmth of lights and sparkling glitter are always eye-catching, even if kept simple. Create a glowing centerpiece that will look good throughout both holidays and let your kids get creative at the same time. Start out with a scavenger hunt for pine cones and fallen leaves. Next, lay out some newspaper and get the glitz on by rolling the pinecones in glue and dusting with gold and silver glitter. To ensure your leaves make the transition from one holiday to another, spray paint with metallic tones. Next, take a large clear vase and a strand of miniature battery-powered LED lights and have fun filling with your festive finds while incorporating the mini lights. Finish off by adding a large bow using thick metallic or neutral colored ribbon to hide the battery pack. Place on table or any surface for an eyecatching display.

Another holiday hopping decorating idea is a drop crystal tree branch. What’s fun about this project is the only supplies needed are a few packs of acrylic crystals of varying sizes, gold spray paint and river rock. Start out by taking a fun family nature walk to find the perfect tree branch. You can go a little big and cut down when pruning. Once you have the perfect sized branch, go outside and spray it with metallic gold paint. Some may choose to spray white or silver but that may look more like Christmas. Next, use a decorative vase or pail and fill with river rocks to serve as the base for the tree to stand in. Finally, load up the crystals! Give your kids their own baggie of crystals and let them place all over the branch. Place larger branches on the floor to add some glimmer to a corner while smaller branches can serve as an eccentric centerpiece.

While enjoying dual décor may be time-saving, economical and fun for the family, it does pose challenges for cleaning. Keep it simple by placing your vase or decorative centerpiece on a tray or gathered fabric that can easily be slid over or removed altogether while tidying up.

And finally, sit back and enjoy! n

Gifts for the Guys

Ideas from Budget-Friendly to Luxury

It happens every year, the gift-giving season, yet for some reason, we always struggle to find the perfect gift for our spouse. You know him like the back of your hand and yet every year you find yourself racking your brain and wandering aisles aimlessly trying to get gift ideas. That’s why we have curated this special gift guide so you can successfully spoil him with the perfect present from the heart. There is something on this list for everyone whether you are budget conscious or ready to splurge.

Create a photo album with a picture of every year (or month if you have not been together that long) you have been together. This could honestly go either way, budget or luxury. It depends on how much you invest in the album. No matter what you plan to spend, this one does take a little time to find the pictures and put it together so plan ahead. This is

not a gift that should be saved for the last minute.

Sophisticated whiskey decanter – This will be more on the luxury side, but for a man that loves his whiskey, this will be a great gift. What will make it even better is if you get it stamped with his own custom label.

Shaving kit – This can be either lavish or budget-friendly depending on how far you go with it. To keep it budget conscious upgrade his current razor, get some great shave cream, and aftershave lotion, and you are done. To take it into the luxury category, buy more expensive shave products, and throw in a gift card for a local barbershop.

Tour of beers – If your man is a fan of hops then give him a tour of beers! To keep it budget-friendly buy a pair of beer

14 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020

steins and a local brew beer that he hasn’t tried yet. You could also throw in a gift card to a local brewery. If you are willing to spend a little more (or a lot more), then take him on a beer tour that starts local and ends at a place you have always wanted to visit. Take him on a tour of the taproom of his favorite brewery.

Phone docking station – This will be the gift that he never knew he needed until you got it for him. A phone docking station where he can keep his phone, watch, key, etc is a great way to keep him organized. There are lots of great affordable options. You can even step up the sophistication by having it engraved with his monogram.

Stylish jacket – The right jacket is the perfect addition to every outfit. Find something ontrend and on budget.

Skincare collection – Skincare isn’t just important for women, it is equally important for men, but not something they are likely going to buy themselves. There are great options from department stores to local boutiques. This would be another great gift to throw in a gift card to his favorite local barbershop or a men’s facial at a local spa.

Grill master set – Throw that tired set in the trash and buy him a whole new set of grilling tools. You can beef up this present with a gift card to a local meat locker, cookbook, or a grill accessory that he has been eyeing but not purchased. For example a pizza stone for the grill or a smoking kit.

Guys night out – If you are pinching pennies, then it could be as simple as getting you and the kids out of the house so he can have friends over to watch a game. If you want to spoil him it can be tickets to a sporting event, golf simulator bar, or tasting at a local brewery.

Luggage – We all need to travel at some point so buy him a nice suitcase for the next trip you plan to take.

Hopefully, this guide will ease your holiday shopping anxiety and your spouse will appreciate the time and effort you put into his gift. No matter what you end up spending, every gift item on this list will be priceless when given from the heart. n

Yar's Dream Kids

Creating a Better Life for Children a World Away

Dreams can be powerful and can, in some instances, change lives. Minnesota resident Yar Kang says that her long-time dream was to help children.  Upon learning from her sister about the plight of the impoverished orphan children in various tribes in South Sudan, she knew the reason for her vision as she explains, “When God calls you to do you something you must look into it.”  For this reason, Yar turned that dream into her mission.

As a South Sudanese refugee herself, Yar financed and coordinated a successful effort in 2019 to relocate a group of 25 orphans from several villages to a United Nations refugee camp in Adjumani, Uganda. Yar recalls, “I worried about something happening to the kids during their journey. So many things were out of my control, but I kept praying.” She had connected with Abraham, a pastor at the camp who arranged for housing, as well as local families who would be financially supported for their caregiving responsibilities.

It was a relief to everyone when Yar’s sister called with the good news that the kids had arrived safely at the camp.

Yar sent her own money to help support the kids for as long as she was able.  She met many of the children on a spring visit to South Sudan, and she recalls, “I knew I couldn’t continue to afford the tuition costs and I needed to find a solution.” Additional funds were needed to cover the cost of safe housing, daily meals and to enroll the kids in United Nations schools where they were learning to read and write in English. A non-profit organization was established to receive donations and distribute funds for this mission, and a supporter suggested they name the group Yar’s Dream Kids to honor the founder’s commitment to the children.

Beyond grateful for the leaders and supporters of the Yar’s Dream Kids organization, Yar says, “This would have only remained an idea if we didn’t have the backing of so many

Board member Anyeth

others. Abraham, the caregivers, and their families feel blessed as they make such an impact on our dream kids’ lives.” Keeping in regular contact, Yar tells the children she loves them and revels in how cheerful and grateful they are for their large, blended family. She explains, “The children are united in their love for God and a common hope for their future. Their goal is to return to their country with the education and skills to hold jobs and assume leadership roles in their communities.”

Yar’s Dream Kids continues to support the children through challenges they face with the global COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more about the 501 (c)(3) organization, the children, and their supporters, visit their Facebook page or email  yarsdreamkids@gmail.com

Layered Elements

It's Cold Outside!

Baby,

Every year, winter wear is a challenge. Not because pants and sweaters are difficult to come by, but because the process of layering outerwear becomes a bit of a challenge to mix the feeling of “warm & cozy” with style and flair. Thankfully, the year 2020 is coming in clutch with some fabulous fashions that will make your winter transition look and feel nothing less than fabulous.

Of course, as the months start closing in, a lovely cardigan is a great place to start. Something warm and gentle, that no-effort shrug-on look that is cute, comfy, and library-chic. Don’t forget a scarf—infinity scarves are always a great and easy touch, but a larger wrap-around version is even trendier.

To keep yourself safe and warm, layers are the way to go, but this year we’re trying to get away from all that bulk. While puffy jackets were in for the past couple of years, we’ve slimmed ourselves down once more and are going for a lankier look with long coats. Wool or woven or fauxleather, double-breasted or wrap, we’re going for that lean silhouette reminiscent of long legs walking the streets of a busy city.

Colors and patterns for this year revolve around your typical slimming blacks and dark browns, as well as patterns of plaid and gingham. Don’t be afraid to go bold with a splash of this year’s most popular color: red! (Did you read our October/November article on finding your perfect shade of red?) Add in some faux-fir trimmings and some sleek gloves, and you’re in style. Of course, we can’t forget about the footwear— boots this year are medium to tall, and if you’re really looking to stand out try a knee or thigh-high pair.

Step into this winter season with a graceful and willowy design—cold needs no fear, slender yet warm fashion trends are here! n

Moisturizing Your Facial Skin in Harsh Weather

We’ve been there: no matter the skin type, when the harsh winter weather comes in and freezes you out, your skin dries up, feels tight and uncomfortable as if it’s going to form little paper cuts all over. Not only does it not look healthy, dry and unmoisturized skin is much more susceptible to signs of aging— something we want to prevent in order to both look and feel good. It’s important that we know what we’re putting on our face and why.

The following includes ingredients to look for in moisturizing products:

First, we want something that draws moisture to our skin. The best type of ingredients for this are called humectants. Substances like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe, and even honey will do wonders for taking moisture out of the air and pulling it into your skin to maintain a healthy glow.

Now that we have the moisture, we need to maintain it. Next is a list of occlusives. Occlusives lock in that moisture from the humectants, keeping it there for prolonged use. Shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax are familiar names that do their job very well.

Once we’ve drawn in and locked in our moisture, we need a preservation system. Preserving the moisture allows the skin to maintain health by defeating bacteria that may want to find a home on your skin. Seek out ingredients in your products such as alcohols like witch hazel and benzyl alcohol, or essential oils like rosemary and tea tree oil.

We can’t forget the SPF! Sunscreen should always be included in your moisturizer, even in the winter, as we don’t want UV rays to break up the barrier for moisture maintenance on our skin!

When caring for your skin, make sure that all of the above ingredients are present—one of the three won’t work without the help of the other two. They’re all connected, and together they can draw in, retain, and maintain that moisture, locking in beautiful, replenished, hydrated and happy skin! n

Four Ways To Sleigh Your Way To Healthy Holidays

The holidays are coming, which can often be a challenge to stay healthy. Yet, this nutritionally challenging and tempting time is also a great opportunity to find balance to fully enjoy the holiday season! Checkout these four ways to help you ‘sleigh’ your way to making this year your best and healthiest holiday season!

PLAN AHEAD: Continue to plan your meals weekly as you normally would and plan your parties and events into the week’s agenda. Don’t skip a meal to save up all your calories, but rather make good, healthy choices during the day, so when the party arrives, you won’t be tempted to devour everything in sight. Stay hydrated throughout the day to minimize your thirst cues sending mixed messages to your brain (drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces of water each day).

GO PREPARED: If you’re attending an event, this is a great opportunity for you to make a healthy swap for one of your favorite holiday dishes. Chances are, you’re not alone in wanting a healthier holiday and many others will greatly appreciate you for bringing a healthy option! This way you’re guaranteed to have a dish that you know you can feel good about eating. Make sure to bring a copy of the recipe so you can share with others!

BALANCE & MODERATION: Choose a Goldilocks-sized plate and a portion that matches. Instead of getting a large plate where you’ll be inclined to fill it up or a tiny plate, where you’ll need seconds, go for a moderate sized plate so you get just the right sized portion. Make sure that everything on your plate is something you love and enjoy. Choose foods that make you feel good, after all it is the holidays. If there’s something you really want, have some, but then move on. It can be a huge temptation to have holiday indulgences around, so make sure you keep it out of sight and out of mind.

TIME IT RIGHT: Aim to keep your eating window to no more than 12 hours. To your brain/stomach, this means your body has 12 hours to rest and digest, and the other 12 hours can be broken up into meal times. So many things are working behind the scenes when you allow your body time to rest, repair, digest and rebalance. 7am to 7pm is a good place to start, but if your event or party is going later, think about delaying your breakfast until a few hours later than normal.

Approach the holidays feeling confident about staying healthy. By planning ahead, going prepared, practicing balance and moderation and timing it right, this will not only be your healthiest holiday season, but your most enjoyable one as well! n

Healthy Cells & Healthy Bodies

A body consists of organs, the organs consist of cells and every cell, just like the whole human organism, has its own transfer of molecules, energy and information. The Bioenergetic Field of the body refers to the communication between the cells which is largely based on electromagnetic frequencies. Therefore, the Healy applications are designed to harmonize the communication of the cells to the Bioenergetic Field by using Individualized Microcurrent Frequencies (IMF).

Individualized Microcurrent Frequency (IMF) Program Pages

We have arranged the application areas for the harmonization of your Bioenergetic Field into different program pages. Each program page contains a list of Individualized Microcurrent Frequency (IMF) programs.

Eats! Holiday

Pumpkin Chili

• 1 small pie pumpkin, peeled & cubed

• 2 quarts vegetable stock

• 1 large yellow onion, diced

• 2 orange bell peppers, diced

• 2 fresh jalapenos, diced

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 28oz can fire roasted tomatoes, diced

• 2 15oz cans garbanzo beans, drained

• 15oz can black beans, drained

• 3 Tbsp chili powder

• 1 Tbsp ground cumin

• 1 tsp smoked paprika

1. Place peeled & cubed pumpkin, vegetable stock, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp fresh ground pepper in a medium stock pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat & simmer 20-25 minutes or until pumpkin is very tender. Use blender or immersion blender to blend until smooth. This will be the base of the soup.

2. In a separate larger stock pot add onion, bell pepper, jalapeno, cook about 7 minutes until vegetables are just tender. Add garlic, cook another minute. Add in spices to the bottom of pan, cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

3. Add tomatoes to onion and spice mixture and scrape the bottom of the pan and stir frequently. Add in beans.

4. Finally pour in the pumpkin puree and stir until well combined. Season to taste.

5. Pour into your favorite soup bowl, garnish with toasted pepitas & enjoy wonderful flavors of fall.

Apple Oat Muffins

• 2 local red apples (honeycrisp, gala, pink lady), peeled & diced

• 2 Tbsp brown sugar

• 1½ tsp pumpkin spice

• 2 c organic unbleached all-purpose flour

• ½ c organic whole wheat flour

• 1 c rolled oats

• 2/3 c brown sugar

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 Tbsp baking powder

• 1 tsp baking soda

• 2/3 c unrefined coconut oil, melted

• 1 c applesauce

• 2/3 c oat milk

1. Add first three ingredients to small sauce pan. Cook over medium low heat until sugar has started to caramelized. About 5-10 minutes, set aside.

2. In large mixing bowl combine all dry ingredients, mix thoroughly. Be sure to break up any clumps of brown sugar.

3. Add in coconut oil, applesauce, oat milk. Stir until just combined. Fold in caramelized apples.

4. Spray muffin tin with non-stick spray. Scoop in enough muffin batter to leave about a ¼ inch of space for room to rise. Sprinkle a few oat flakes right on top of each muffin.

5. Bake in a 350 degree oven 15-18 minutes until toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the muffin. Let cool 20 minutes.

6. Enjoy!

Little House on the

Prairie

A True Home for the Holidays

Over the river and through the woods lies a cozy home filled with personal treasures, salvaged materials and exquisite décor. But it’s not the unique chandeliers or layers of muted tones blending together to create the perfect farmhouse chic style that makes this home exude exquisite beauty. That would make this ranch-style home located in rural Beresford seem simple. Rather it’s the rustic timber ceiling, original fireplace and hours of painstaking craftsmanship that come together to create a one-of-a-kind acreage filled with both beauty and a passion for design.

When Margaret and Marty became “empty nesters” in 2017, they decided to get back to their country roots and purchase an acreage. “Our stipulation is that we had to be within a half hour drive to Sioux Falls,” adds Margaret. Barely within range, Margaret fell in love with a quaint fixer-upper but had to convince her husband before making the decision. “We knew there was a lot of work that needed to be done,” she adds. “But the overall structure, location and general layout fell in line with what we were looking for.”

No stranger to hard work and perseverance, the duo got right to work transforming the dated décor, tearing off layers of wallpaper and essentially redoing nearly every surface of the 2,000 square-foot home. Yet with all the upgrades, fresh paint and pet-friendly Karndean vinyl flooring, Margaret was in love with the original wood timber ceiling that spanned throughout the main level living room and into a dining area. “This house was originally built in the early 1900’s and was moved to this location in 1975,” she adds. From there, the little house on the prairie stayed with one family for over three decades. “We were so excited when some of the home’s family came for a visit last year,” Margaret says. “The father was a builder and installed the rustic timber ceiling from a barn across the road. He also put up wood on the back wall by the fireplace and built the fireplace.”

Even though they could reuse some of the elements, the labor of love continued. For the main sitting area, Margaret whitewashed the wood wall and original brick fireplace to brighten the space. Expansive windows simply adorned with rod pocket curtains allow light to flood the space now filled with caramel-toned leather upholstery and neutral walls. To maximize budget, Margaret purchased the sofa used and boldly painted over the original red with a rich, golden hue to pair with a gifted chair from her parents. “We wanted this home to fit our lifestyle,” she adds. “And that includes our dogs, which are known to be hard on furniture,” she laughs. “With these pieces, I don’t need to worry about what happens as much.”

Before

The heart of the home was another important space for Margaret. To save expenses, she opted for butcher block countertops but splurged on painted white cabinets. First appearing a bit small for the couple, after a few months of getting acquainted with the space, they realized it fit all their needs perfectly. They even fell in love with the butcher block countertops and were glad they made the thrifty decision. Crisp and classic white subway tile cover the backsplash and coordinate with the cabinets while contrasting with the natural wood tones and stainless steel appliances.

With comfort at the forefront, the Pennocks ensured the living room met their needs. A family favorite, the cozy space features neutral walls, wood floors accented with an oriental rug and subtle Boho chic wallpaper to add detailed interest. With ample natural sunlight, crisp white wood blinds control the light so they can relax in their comfortable upholstered furniture and enjoy watching television by the fireplace. “This is the room we spend the most time in,” adds Margaret.

As the couple made their way through the home; scraping, painting, tiling, installing and updating just about everything needed to achieve their perfect farmhouse chic, they came to the realization that additional space was needed. Already in love with the home and its potential, the best option was an addition. “We took out a window in the wall of the main dining room,” she adds. “This created an interior wall and the beginning of the addition which basically is our master bedroom and bath.”

Seamlessly transitioning from old to new, they worked closely with their general contractor to ensure every detail fit their needs. “I love the transom windows above the bed,” she adds. Being new construction, Margaret took advantage of making decisions like this but always kept the integrity of the home in mind. Lush carpets underfoot mimic a large area rug that softens the dreamy space. Large patio doors lead to a deck which was another thing on Margaret’s wish list.

The master bathroom glows with walls covered in white subway tile, a crystal chandelier dangling above an elongated custom vanity with granite countertop. “This area rug was sent to me from Iraq when my husband Marty was deployed,” adds Margaret. “And this refurbished chair belonged to my father when he was a child.”

Down a small hall is the main floor powder bath. Although Margaret was hoping to convert it into a pantry, they chose function over form but made sure to add unique details. “We opted for dual sliding barn doors because of spacing,” she adds. Another conversation piece is the sturdy, white vessel sink. “We wanted our cabinets to be uniform throughout the home.” Opting for black rather than white, this small space is the perfect extension of beauty with a simple brushed gold round mirror and floor to ceiling white subway tile.

And what old house doesn’t come with its quirks. A small door opens to a secret space used for storage. But Margaret finds it much more interesting to call it her “babadook closet.” A true work in progress, Margaret already has plans to expand the narrow stairway that leads to the finished lower level.

Taking cues from their family needs, Margaret made the decision to not have a lower level family area. “In our last home, we had the space and it was rarely used,” she adds. “So we decided to dedicate the lower level for two bedrooms and a bath.” Although her son and daughter have moved out, she still opted to decorate each room with their signature style. For the more feminine room, a white upholstered tufted headboard softens along with the layers of neutral tone bedding. A small silver painted built-in desk in the corner is perfect for weekend visits. To add interest, a flat screen television is mounted on the wall above a “faux” fireplace with plaid insert. Taking on more masculine cues, the second bedroom comes to life with a rustic wood headboard and tones of slate blues and taupe. A corner cabinet houses both a flat screen television and electric fireplace.

The lower level full bath capitalizes on space with white subway tile that extends into the walk-in shower complete with a built-in bench and rainfall showerhead. For added light, a glass window was added to create a spacious feel. Coordinating with the upper level powder bath, a black vanity with wood countertops provide the perfect surface for the large, white vessel sink. A classic mirror medicine cabinet once again gives a nod to the past. “These cabinets were original,” adds Margaret of the elongated storage space. “We tried to use as much as we can.”

And while the couple may technically be considered “empty nesters,” just one look around the large and lush yard soon changes minds. “I have always loved horses and had mine boarded for many years,” adds Margaret. When the couple moved to the country, one of the first things they did was to build a place for her horse and even a couple of animal friends. “We added this shed and created a large fenced area for a mini donkey, horse, and two baby doll sheep,” she adds. “We plan to purchase another horse for my husband this spring so we can go riding together.” With riding trails close by, the Pennocks have the perfect arrangement for their hobbies. And whether they had a long day renovating their home, riding horses or tending to their small animals, the couple can relax in their private Jacuzzi tub during the cooler months or take a refreshing dip in their above-ground pool. A true necessity since Margaret still has many projects in her head. “I don’t think I’ll ever be done renovating my home,” she laughs. “There’s always something in my mind that I want to accomplish.” But for now, the couple is enjoying the holiday season in their cozy acreage and relishing in the fruits of their labor. n

Happy Holidays From Montgomery’s

Snuggle by the Fire

Story and Photos by Lisa Marie Blair

One of the best things about our Midwest winters is snuggling by the fire, on a cold and snowy night. A fireplace decked with your favorite holiday trimmings will surely bring festive ambiance to your home. There are a variety of ways to add charm to your home, making it both fashionable, yet cozy.

The Christmas décor was kept very timeless and simple while decorating this modern, black brick fireplace. The red berries in the tall gold bud vases really stand out and prove that a little red can go a long way. A Christmas tree plopped into a jute basket instantly adds some texture and holiday cheer. The large basket full of pillows and blankets, can stay out all year round to have handy for chilly nights.

A white brick fireplace with shiplap accents is easy to decorate as Christmas décor pops against the neutral backdrop. This modern farmhouse fireplace looks amazing

with green garland resting on the natural wood mantel. Deer antlers, pinecones, red berries, and lights tucked within the garland add so much texture and a soft glow. The traditional stockings, hung on the antlers, soften up the brick and add holiday charm. The dip-dyed stools, a present, and a frosted Christmas tree add dimension to the fireplace.

Nothing is more traditional than a stone fireplace and this is one to snuggle by. The frosted garland with pinecones and red berries tucked within, drapes over the black beam mantel. The oversized wood candle sticks flank each side of the Merry Christmas sign. This huge hearth is also great for decorating and easily holds two large lanterns with Christmas trees tucked inside. The green vintage cart works great for hauling wood in and adds to the overall Christmas decor.

If you currently don’t have a fireplace and you want to

hang some stockings, you can make a faux fireplace. This faux fireplace with log slices is perfect for decorating at Christmas time. This is in a dining nook and the café sign rests on the mantel. Two flocked evergreen trees and a cocoa pot bring joy to this little nook. The white knit stockings have been hung with care and even have small gifts tucked inside.

There are endless options when decorating your fireplace. You can take the maximalist approach which believes “more is more” or go the minimalist route which believes “less is more” or somewhere in the middle. Whatever you do, notes of green, red, and white can really make it feel like Christmas morning. You simply cannot go wrong and all that really matters is that you love it! n

DIY Pinecone Door Hanger

SUPPLIES

• 8-10 pinecones, variety of sizes • Hook

• Small eye screws

• W ire

• 3/8” velvet ribbon • Drill

• E6000 (or other craft glue)

This holiday season create a quick and easy alternative to the traditional door wreath. A pinecone door hanger creates a casual, rustic welcome during the holidays and all winter long. Customize ribbon type and color to match your décor or even use thick twine for a more natural look. It can easily go beyond the door, hung from a shelf, mantle or wall hook.

DIRECTIONS

Use the drill to make a hole into the bottom of the pinecones, as close to the center as possible. The drill bit should be a slightly smaller gauge than the screw eye for a tight fit.

Cut the ribbon to the desired length for the drop of the pinecones, with longer ribbon used for the larger pinecones and shorter for the smaller ones. This project used single-faced velvet ribbon doubled with the back sides together, creating the look of double-faced velvet.

Feed the ribbon through the screw eye. If doubling the ribbon to see velvet on both sides, continue feeding the ribbon through until the eye is at the half-way point. If leaving the ribbon single-faced, feed the ribbon through ½ inch. Apply E6000 or other craft glue to adhere the ribbon to itself, holding the eye in place.

Insert the screw eye with ribbon into the hole on the bottom of the pinecone.

Gather the ribbon strands near the top and arrange the pinecones as they hang down. Adjust the drop of the pinecones to create the best shape and use a thin piece of wire to secure all the strands together.

Cut the ends of the ribbon on an angle so that they are similar length above the gather.

Tie a new piece of velvet around the gather to disguise the wire. n

Playing it by Ear for the Holidays

A New Class of Hearing Technology

Family gatherings during the holidays can be a logistics nightmare for someone who struggles with hearing loss. Missing words, not hearing complete sentences because of background noise or being unable to distinguish ambient sounds can take the fun out of any party. If you can’t hear well, there’s no good place to sit, stand or converse. And crowded settings make matters worse.

Hearing loss affects one in eight people and approximately 37.5 million American adults according to the US Dept of Health and Human Services National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Hearing aids can help those who don’t hear well, but

sometimes that is not enough. Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat is now offering patients Earlens ®, a new lensbased technology that addresses the need for better sound.

“The number one complaint from those wearing a hearing aid is clarity – being able to hear and understand,” says Dr. Kenneth Scott, a physician at Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat. “Though conventional hearing aids have come a long way, there still remains the problems with the speaker. Speakers in hearing aids are tiny. They have to be because the ear canal is small. Earlens® has no speaker.”

Developed in 2017, Dr. Scott describes Earlens® as “truly novel technology” and a “big leap” for sound quality.

56 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020

“It’s not an implant and not a conventional hearing aid,” she explains. “It’s a lens-based technology. The lens, which can be compared to a soft contact, is placed over the eardrum.”

Simply explained, the FDA-approved device is made up of three parts: a processor; an ear tip, and a lens. The three work in conjunction with one another. The processor which rests on the outer-ear captures the sound; the ear tip converts the sound and then sends a signal to the lens; the lens, which has been non-surgically placed deeply inside the ear canal on the eardrum, then vibrates the eardrum naturally activating the hearing mechanism.

Earlens ® offers almost three times the pitch range of a conventional hearing aid. Besides better sound clarity, it filters background noise. Music and phone calls sound better and, best of all, you hear and understand others,

which is so important during the holidays with family and friends.

Dr. Scott says those who wear conventional hearing devices owe it to themselves to be educated with this new technology and see if they can benefit. Earlens® is only available from an ENT practice, so patients who choose it have two-fold medical expertise as an audiologist and an ENT physician work together to properly customize the device from fitting to programming.

Using a simulator, the professionals at Midwest ENT can demo an Earlens® device in their offices. “You can actually ‘hear’ how the device works,” says Dr. Scott. “We will determine if you are a good candidate or suggest what is best for you.”

Finding a solution that leads to better hearing could be the best gift you ever gave yourself for the holidays. n

Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Mammogram

When I turned 40 last year, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would I feel different? Would I immediately grow wiser? Would shouting, “Get off my lawn,” while shaking my fist in the air become the new normal?

In reality, you’re told you need bifocals, your neck and back problems intensify and more routine screenings are required to ensure you aren’t falling apart.

In February, just before the pandemic hit, I got my first mammogram. Given my history of cancer — I was diagnosed and recovered from cervical cancer in 2014 — I’m always a bit nervous about routine screenings. It was during a routine Pap test that my cervical cancer was discovered. My breasts, however, have never been the focus of much medical scrutiny.

At 16, I found a lump. My mother had showed me, at a young age, how to do a self-exam. Not knowing what to do, and not wanting to worry my parents, I made an appointment with a female doctor. Convinced that I definitely had breast cancer and was going to die, I burst into tears when she asked me to explain what was going on.

58 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020

“It’s OK,” she said. “Because of your age, it’s probably nothing. Let’s just take a look.”

She immediately put me at ease by saying, “Well, you could poke someone’s eye out with that thing,” referring to the lump, and I laugh-cried. It turned out to be nothing. She said if I cut caffeine out of my diet, the lump would naturally disappear.

I think about all of this as my radiologic technologist asks me several questions, including if I have ever had breast concerns. I mentioned the benign lump I had, and ask if I should worry. She said no, that fibrocystic breast changes are common.

A mammogram is less uncomfortable than other screenings I’ve had.

After the medical history, you’ll be asked to disrobe from the waist up and to wear a hospital gown half-shirt. And then you’ll be asked into the screening room.

The radiologic technologist ensures that you’re as comfortable as possible and distracts you while you’re “exposed.” And, honestly, you’re not that exposed. Only one breast is exposed at a time. My tech was so good at keeping the small talk going that I barely noticed when she was maneuvering my breast tissue to get the perfect images.

I received a letter about a week after my screening, but this timeline can vary. The letter will say something along the lines of, “Hooray! Things are normal. Come see us in a year.”

Overall, my first mammogram was a pleasant experience and something I’m glad I didn’t delay. Screenings simply give you peace of mind. Now that clinics are back to a new normal, this is the time to schedule that mammogram.

Don’t deny yourself of something that could save your life. n

Total Joint Knee Replacement Pays Off for Nurse

Jan Dahl went into her knee replacement surgeries prepared to work — hard. She knew the amount of effort she put into her rehabilitation after surgery was important to improving her mobility and reducing pain.

Dahl had always enjoyed a pretty active lifestyle. For one thing, her job as a nurse for Sanford Health’s surgical services kept her on her feet and walking all day. At home, she and her husband enjoyed walks and bike rides together. And, her personal habits encouraged movement, such as taking the stairs or choosing a parking spot far from the entrance.

Gradually, though, she noticed changes. Her right knee started to ache, and the pain worsened over time. Then came another sign: intensifying pain.

“Even if I was only going to get one gallon of milk,” Dahl said, “I would grab a cart at the entrance to a store so that I could lean on the cart as I walked through the store. And I thought, ‘It’s time.’”

A SUCCESSFUL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Dahl, now 65 and retired, had surgery to replace her right knee in January 2017. Her surgery by orthopedic surgeon Brian Aamlid, MD, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls went

60 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020

well. And after, she had a new perspective –as a patient.

“They make sure that you’re comfortable while you’re in the hospital and have all the information you need when you’re ready to be discharged,” Dahl said.

Once she headed home, the real work began. Dahl worked with a physical therapist for about 45 minutes three times a week. Then, she repeated the exercises several times a day at home.

“The more you work at it, the stronger you get,” she explained. “Whenever I would have pain or stiffness, I would go get on the bike and just try to work it out. Usually the pain would be my reminder that I’ve got to work through this.”

After three months, she could resume normal activities.

REPLACING HER OTHER KNEE

Following her right knee replacement, Dahl’s left knee actually saw improvement on its own. She thought she might avoid having that one replaced. But, as it gradually started having the same symptoms, she knew it was time to get the left knee replaced, too.

Dr. Aamlid performed her second knee replacement in February 2019, followed by physical therapy, which paid off.

Four months after her first knee replacement, she and her husband had hiked the six-mile trek at Crazy Horse Monument. And, four months after her second surgery — with two strong knees — she was able to hike 11 miles in Glacier National Park.

Dahl’s surgeries also held a couple of surprises. Before, she had been having hip pain, but that has gone away. Plus, Dr. Aamlid was able to help align her legs.

“I would say do it (total knee replacement) sooner than later. It’s a big process, but you have so much to gain,” concluded Dahl. n

Sara Rogers: It’s a December to Remember

You may be one of those unfortunate people who were told a great falsehood at age eight or so: that Santa Claus didn’t exist. Ridiculous. Santa is very much alive, full of magic and mirth and….on Facebook.

And Santa has a watchful eye for people who may be in need. It’s a Facebook page called the Giving Christmas and Sara Rogers is that “watchful eye.”

Sara is a force behind this charitable holiday gift-giving project. Now in its 5th year, the Giving Christmas Facebook page plans to post the wish lists of over 100 families in the Sioux Falls area.

“The Giving Christmas Facebook page started accepting families Nov. 1. The only requirements: the family has a child under age 18 at home; they are from the Sioux Falls area; and they aren’t accepting help from any other organization for Christmas presents. The family then goes on to write a letter and speak of their struggles,” says Sara.

Every family has its own special set of wants and needs. Their letters, touching.

“We hear from single parent families, families with medical issues or individuals who are out of work. We ask parents to let us know if their children need clothing. And household items – food, diapers, laundry products – are always big needs.”

Family stories also include the ages of the children and the children’s Christmas lists.

Sara says each family is then assigned a number and their story is posted on the page. The outpouring is immediate.

“Once the family information is posted, we have an awesome group of individuals who will comment or message that they are interested in adopting one of our families. These followers can just be good, kind-hearted individuals, or church groups or previous families we have helped in the past.”

Individuals or groups who adopt a family take the responsibility to check off what’s on that list. They also wrap and deliver the gifts to that family by the first week in December.

66 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020 profile | cover story
Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

Sara is in awe at the public response to the Giving Christmas Facebook page as it continues to reach more families and also receives donations.

“Last year we gave away turkeys, hams and household supplies along with winter essentials like hats, gloves and blankets. Over the years, we have been fortunate to have support in so many different ways to keep this page growing and expanding. It was October of 2016 my friend Sunshine Weinandt-Zapata posted to Facebook that she was looking for a few friends to help out with a Christmas fundraiser for local families, and I became involved. I had no idea what it would lead to. That first season, fifty families received presents.”

This year the need appears to be greater than ever.

“We are anticipating more than 100 families and their wish lists will be posted.”

ESSENTIAL WORKER – THE SCHOOL NURSE

By profession, Sara is a school nurse. This fall, she returned to her duties in the Special Ed Department at Frontier Elementary in Tea. Not only was she caring for an at-risk group of students, there was the also Covid-related responsibilities of taking temperatures and monitoring symptoms. And, she was pregnant.

“I was a little stressed about being pregnant when Covid took hold in March, and we all knew so little about what to expect. But I work with an awesome school district that has made it a priority to keep students and staff safe. After the sudden school closure that lasted the rest of the school year, it honestly has been so nice to see all the kids and be back in the classroom again.”

With Covid-19, Sara has been helping with the nursing needs throughout her elementary school.

“I love my work. When I went to nursing school, I wanted to work in pediatrics. A school is a nice alternative. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to help kids with whatever their needs may be in school and classroom settings.”

KIDS WITH EPILEPSY

So much of what Sara does in some way involves kids especially when it comes to her own. It’s not surprising she is a Kids’ Crew leader for the South Dakota Epilepsy Foundation. Her six-yearold son Emerson is one of 9000 individuals in the state living with epilepsy.

“Emerson was diagnosed with epilepsy at just nine months. He was hospitalized numerous times. But I knew so little about epilepsy and its defining symptom - seizures. At the time, I couldn’t really find any resources or groups for moms with kids who had epilepsy. When I happened to see a new group forming in Sioux Falls for kids with epilepsy, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Kids’ Crew took shape with two leaders. Currently, Sara and another individual lead the group.

“We started with monthly meetings where the kids could all get together and be supportive of each other and each other’s families.”

Trips to Outdoor Campus, ThunderRoad, painting pumpkins, volunteering to cook meals for the Ronald McDonald House, a backpack school supply drive, decorating cookies and special walks to end epilepsy have been some of the Kids’ Crew activities.

“It has been a true blessing to be part of something this incredible. It means so much to our family and Emerson who we see as our ‘little epilepsy warrior.’ Though Kids’ Crew has not come together since March because of Covid-19, we are looking forward to gathering and bringing in new members.”

A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER

The Christmas Project isn’t the only thing that will be making Christmas special this year.

Sara, her husband Chris Mullett, and their three children will be welcoming a new baby boy into their home in November.

“There’s Andray who’s sixteen, Zoey who’s eight and Emerson who is six. It’s almost like starting over. But all three children couldn’t be more excited to have a new baby brother and at Christmas time!”

Sara proudly admits the older children have kind hearts as they also share her same joy and passion with Giving Christmas.

“They love to help with the shopping and especially enjoy picking out the toys. Then there is the sorting and all the wrapping. Sometimes our living room or kitchen table gets taken over by all the Giving Christmas toys. And because they have been able to help other kids who don’t have it so well, Andray, Zoey and Emerson enjoy and appreciate Christmas even more.”

For Sara and her family, Christmas has and always will be a “real big deal.”

“My mom always made Christmas special. Growing up, it became my favorite holiday. Now it’s wonderful to pass along those family traditions to my own kids.”

So, does Santa exist? You won’t convince Sara or her family otherwise.

“We love everything there is about Christmas. This year it’s knowing that a few more kids are opening presents and smiling because our Giving Christmas page has made their day much more special. And now Christmas in our home and the joy of our new baby, it will definitely be a December to remember.” n

Head Over Healy

Improving Health Through Frequency Micro-Current Therapy

Our body is a marvelous complex organism that is made up of millions upon millions of cells. For our body to function, those cells communicate through electromagnetic frequencies referred to as the bioenergetic field. One would assume that when we are not feeling well either physically or mentally it is because a change has occurred in the communication between cells. This new cutting edge technology known as “Healy” is a device aimed at harmonizing the communication of the cells to the bioenergetic field by using individualized micro-current frequencies. Local entrepreneur Autumn Wright, owner of Head Over Healy, is bringing this revolutionary health and wellness application to women and families that are looking for an alternative to traditional medicine as a way to improve overall health for themselves and their families.

To obtain this new level of health and self-awareness, one simply needs to wear the Healy device. This small wearable device analyzes your individual frequency via a quantum sensor. It collects data

and delivers it back to the user through an app on your cell phone, customizing a specific frequency program to promote bio-energetic balance, vitality, and overall well-being. By utilizing principles of quantum physics to analyze your individual & specific bioenergetic frequencies, the Healy offers solutions to address physical, mental, and emotional health. Cutting edge science and technology created by a collection of conscious creators have brought Healy into our homes as your family’s new go-to for all things health and wellness. Healy is the next evolution and revolution of healing, wellness, spirituality, and biohacking. It’s a tool that supports you as you tap into your own potential, the key to self-actualization. Healy is an FDA cleared for chronic pain but recognized internationally for alleviation of pain and fibromyalgia, sleep problems, as well as mental and emotional instabilities.

Autumn discovered the benefits of frequency therapy while living in the UK. Autumn shared, “I was immediately intrigued and had

72 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2020

planned to study frequency medicine quite extensively, but we left the UK moving back to the states before this came to fruition.” But the seed had been planted. After returning to the states she reconnected with a friend that she met while living abroad. This friend introduced Autumn to the “Healy” application and the numerous health benefits. She tried it with her own family first and was amazed by the outcomes in only two and a half months. She has used Healy as a way to address traits that have been passed through the generations from her mother, to her and onto her young daughter. One that comes to mind is the hereditary pain that came with the monthly menstrual cycle. This has been a generational trait passed down in her family. With the help of the Healy device, all the women in her family, her mom, Autumn, and her daughter have found pain relief.

Autumn knew that she wanted to share these miraculous health benefits with others. “So here I am, knowing that I need to share what I am experiencing, the shifts that I am feeling and observing in myself and in my kids, my husband, our pets…everything. Healy came to me after a long road of seeking, and studying, of putting myself out there, always on that learning curve of needing to know more, taking more courses, expounding off my knowledge as a mental health professional first and foremost.”

Head Over Healy assesses what the client is needing, and from there they are able to formulate which Healy device would best serve their needs now, and how they can use Healy for their growth and longevity into the future and the futures of their loved ones. MERRY CHRISTMAS

“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.
