“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

Hope Haven International

Ministries: Changing lives through mobility

Following her first trip with Hope Haven International Ministries this year, volunteer Tracy Waack Glasford says she won’t ever take the little things for granted again.

Tracy and a group of volunteers recently served in Costa Rica to fulfill Hope Haven’s mission to provide advocacy and resources for those with disabilities in developing countries. Simply put, they delivered wheelchairs to over 80 disabled people in need. More importantly, they provide hope.

“It is truly humbling to take care of someone else without expecting anything in return,” she says. “If you got a hug, that was all you needed. I think everyone should experience that.” Tracy saw how much it meant to a 22-year-old woman with severe cerebral palsy (and her mother, who had always carried her). She also witnessed the joy shine through a young boy who had lost the lower part of his leg to cancer - he could finally go to the park by himself, and the woman who was elated to replace her cheap plastic garden chair wheelchair. And these are only a few of the life-changing experiences she witnessed.

Tracy credits her father, Duane, for sparking her interest and passion for the program. “Dad has been very active in Hope Haven for years. He is 75, and I wanted to share this experience with him.” After retiring from working many years in the home medical equipment business, Duane has volunteered countless

hours for the organization. His first wheelchair distribution trip was in 2002, this year, he is gearing up for his 33rd trip. He spends much of his spare time working to recycle wheelchairs. “Once you give someone a wheelchair that they wouldn’t have unless you gave it to them, it will change your life as much as it does theirs,” he says.

That life-changing capability is what intrigued Kelly TeSlaa to join Hope Haven International as Logistics and Volunteer Coordinator.

“With Hope Haven International, giving something as small as a wheelchair in a developing country can restore dignity to someone in their community. This gives them their humanity back, and it is life-changing for us as volunteers as much as those receiving mobility.”

Kelly explains that people are often on waiting lists for years before owning a wheelchair. “When people arrive with their family members, you can see the desperation in their eyes,” she says. “Then, when they finally get seated in their wheelchairs, there is an unspeakable joy. To see the joy on the faces is unlike anything I have experienced before. It’s life-changing.”

Hope Haven International Ministries is always in need of volunteers. If you want to learn more about becoming involved, contact Duane at 605.310.2337. n

Should Your Relationship Live Online?

A look at the pros and cons of sharing your relationship on social media

It is undeniable that social media has changed our culture to the point where part of our lives exist in the virtual world. Social Media has become the platform we use to stay informed on topics of interest, communicate with friends and family and share our thoughts and experiences with others. Sharing our lives on social media allows family, friends, and sometimes strangers insight into our personal lives. You decide how much of your life to share on social media, but what about your relationship? How much of your relationship should you share on social media? Before making that decision, you should weigh the pros and cons.

Pro: It can strengthen your relationship – Part of having a healthy relationship is sharing feelings of love and gratitude for your partner. You can inspire others with the way you care for them and share your relationship on social media. When friends and family comment positively on your relationship, it can validate and strengthen it so long as you keep the relationship healthy while maintaining some level of privacy.

Con: It can strain your relationship – Sharing your relationship can also have the reverse effect. Chances are that not everyone in your social media contacts is supportive of your relationship. Posting that vacation picture can elicit feelings of jealousy or envy and lead to negative comments that can be toxic to your relationship. This is especially true if you have experienced rocky times and others are aware of your struggles.

Pro: It can help you feel connected to your partner – What you share on social media is very personal even if what you share appears to be vague. Seeing what your partner shares can provide a window into the thoughts and feelings of your partner throughout the day. It can also give you ideas for ways to connect, for example, if you see your spouse like or share a concert post, you can suggest going to that concert for a date night.

Con: Comparing your relationship to others –  The pressure of social media on personal appearance, lifestyle, and career can be overwhelming. Studies have shown that excessive social

sfw | LIFE

media use can lead to an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. If social media can have that effect on your mental health, think about the potential stress it can bring into your relationship. By comparing your relationship to others you can invite unnecessary strain and pressure into your relationship.

Pro: It can help you stay connected with friends and family – Social media has become a way for families and friends to stay connected even if they are divided by time and distance. Sharing your relationship on social media allows your friends and family to feel like they are part of your life and celebrate your milestones. It can be a way to fill the gap of not getting to spend as much time with them as you would like.

Con: Your relationship is too vulnerable to share on social media – If you are new in a relationship, you should give the relationship time to develop before making your social media debut as a couple. Be cautious of sharing a relationship that could be short-lived and opening yourself up to the scrutiny of why it didn’t work. The same is true if your relationship is struggling. It is best to work out your differences in private rather than publicly on social media. Airing your dirty laundry will ultimately cast a negative cloud over your relationship even if you can work past the storm and get to a happier place.

It is important to maintain perspective when using social media. While it is a great way to share with friends and family, what is shared in the virtual world is not always reality. Just because things appear to be great, doesn’t mean that they actually are. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing your relationship to others on social media. People often only share the highlight reel of the positive aspects of their lives leaving the negative aspects private. Rather than worrying about what others are doing on social media, enjoy your life with each other and the experiences you share as a couple. Embrace social media as a way to augment these experiences, but don’t lose sight of being present in the real world. n

FINDING THE RIGHT PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER

Any time a person gets injured by someone else or at work, that person needs a personal injury lawyer. Insurance company adjusters are experienced at handling claims while the injured person is not. Unfortunately, there often is a significant disparity of power and experience between the adjuster and the injured person. Having a lawyer that is very experienced with personal injury and workers’ compensation claims means that an injured person will be treated fairly and will not get taken advantage of by the insurance company.

“The best time to call a personal injury lawyer is now – and sooner rather than later,” said, Jami Bishop. Jami has been with the Johnson, Janklow & Abdallah Law Firm since 2011 and focuses on car accidents, workers’ compensation, wrongful death, and personal injury litigation. “It is easier to help injured people from the beginning. Getting involved in the middle or near the end of a case makes it much more challenging.”

“At Johnson, Janklow & Abdallah, we walk alongside our clients during some of the darkest times of their lives,” said Kim Lanham. Kim has been with the firm for nearly 20 years and focuses on car accidents, slip/trip and falls, daycare abuse, wrongful death, and personal injury litigation. “We cannot change the past or what happened to our clients or their loved ones, but we can provide compassion, guidance, and skillful advocacy on their behalf.”

“We deeply care for our clients,” said Jami. “Cases take time, and we get to know them and their families. And because our firm is unlike many that have multiple practice areas, our firm is unique in that we focus on car accidents, personal injury, and workers’ compensation claims.”

“Clients can expect the highest level of representation and personal service,” added Kim. “Most importantly, our expertise can change their lives for the better.”

A Healthier, Happier, and More Active Life

The human body has a complex and intricate network of systems that are all interconnected and interdependent. The various functions of these systems are critical for maintaining good health, both physical and mental. However, with the increasingly sedentary lifestyle that most of us lead, it’s easy to become detached from our bodies, leading to physical and emotional health issues. But, one way to counteract this is by activating your body through sun exposure, red light therapy, and infrared sauna.

Sun exposure is a natural way of activating the body. Sunlight is one of the richest sources of vitamin D, which is essential for many bodily functions, including bone health, immune function, and calcium absorption. Sunlight also triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, leading to improved mood and reduced stress. Regular sun exposure has also been shown to improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system, making it an important part of any health regimen.

Red light therapy is another excellent way of activating the body. This type of therapy involves exposing the skin to a specific range of red and near-infrared light. The light penetrates deep into the skin, stimulating the production of cellular energy, known as ATP. This increased energy production is associated with improved

cellular function and healing. It can also stimulate the production of collagen, helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin elasticity.

Infrared sauna therapy is another highly effective way of activating the body. Infrared saunas use far-infrared light to penetrate deep into the body’s tissues, which creates a warming effect. This warming effect causes the body to sweat, which helps to remove toxins, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. Infrared saunas have also been shown to improve joint and muscle pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep. Additionally, the deep heat generated by an infrared sauna has been shown to improve skin health, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improving skin tone and texture.

In conclusion, activating your body through sun exposure, red light therapy, and infrared sauna therapy is an excellent way of improving your physical and mental health. By exposing your body to the right types of light and heat, you can stimulate the production of essential chemicals, improve circulation, boost your immune system, and reduce stress and anxiety. All of these benefits can contribute to a healthier, happier, and more active life, making it well worth the time and effort to incorporate these practices into your daily routine. n

Ultimate Girls' Trip! Essential Packing for the

We all love spending time with our best girlfriends and planning the perfect weekend together. If you’re anything like me, my suitcase is always overflowing and I, admittingly, overpack because who knows when you’ll need an emergency fancy dinner dress! This packing list will help you narrow down the best and most essential items to bring along for a girl’s getaway trip.

CLOTHING: Regardless of the length of your trip - always consider the weather. Versatile, mix-n-match outfits assist in packing lightly. A romper paired with a neutral jacket is a versatile option for warm days and chillier nights. When it comes to swimsuits, include one per day and try them on before leaving to ensure they’re perfect. I highly recommend wearing Athleisure while traveling.

HANDBAG: I know this is controversial, but you only need one! A general tote or neutral-colored bag is a great way to multi-task and save packing space. If you’re flying, nest your handbag into your tote.

SHOES: One pair of sandals and one pair of dressy heels that go with everything are a must. Wear your athletic shoes while traveling for bonus packing space.

DON’T FORGET THE MUSIC: A mini portable speaker with a pre-made music playlist will tie the trip together while lounging on the beach or doing an adventurous hike.

MISCELLANEOUS: Make-up wipes, phone charger, your cutest pair of sunglasses, reusable water bottle, sunscreen, mini toiletries, sanitizing wipes, and trusted make-up products are essential!

Cheers to girlfriends, essential packing, and the best getaway ever! Ciao! n

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME: A GREAT TIME TO STOP SNORING

Great Plains Dental Treats Snoring, Sleep Apnea and Helps Improve Patients’ Spouse Sleep

With the changing of clocks, people often suffer from sleep deficiency during daylight saving time. While many struggle to spring forward into their normal sleep routine, a surprising 12-18 million Americans face this problem year-round due to sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder which causes them to stop breathing up to hundreds of times a night for anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute.

“Daylight saving time is a reminder for all of us about how vital a good night’s sleep is to our health,” said Dr Bill Schultz, a dentist at Great Plains Dental and member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). “If you’re losing sleep to snoring or sleep apnea, a dental consultation can help you take the necessary steps to ensure better quality sleep and improved health all year round.”

Dr. Schultz is one of thousands of AADSM dentists practicing in the growing field of dental sleep medicine to help treat snoring and sleep apnea. Once a patient is diagnosed with primary snoring or obstructive sleep apnea by a boardcertified sleep physician, Dr. Schultz can provide an effective, custom-fitted oral appliance to help maintain an open,

unobstructed airway during sleep.

Oral appliance therapy is a comfortable alternative to the traditionally prescribed continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which includes a face mask, tubing and a constantly running motor. CPAP has maximum benefit for patients only when they are willing and able to use it continuously. However, up to half of sleep apnea patients don’t comply with or can’t tolerate CPAP. Patients often prefer oral appliance therapy because it is more comfortable than CPAP, easy to wear, quiet, portable and easy to care for.

“For the millions of people suffering from sleep apnea, the consequences of a poor night’s sleep – higher stress, increased mistakes, diffi culty concentrating – are everyday occurrences. But it doesn’t have to be this way,” said Dr. Schultz. “Many of my patients have found more restful sleep and an improved quality of life since starting oral appliance therapy.”

MORE ABOUT OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat, blocking the upper airway. Loud, frequent snoring and daytime sleepiness are common symptoms of this sleep disorder. If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially life threatening condition that can increase the risk for serious health problems from congestive heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease to diabetes, obesity, depression and impotence.

Great Plains Dental is located at 5121 S. Solberg Ave in Sioux Falls. Patients with loud snoring and diagnosed sleep apnea sufferers with difficulty tolerating CPAP should contact Dr. Schultz at 605-231-9557 to schedule a consultation appointment.

LOVE THE PROCESS OF BUYING A CAR

Buying a new car can seem like a daunting process but it doesn’t have to be. Finding the right car at the right dealership can make you fall in love with the car-buying process.

The first step in the car-buying process is choosing the right brand. Make sure to do your homework on the different models, features, and colors so you can pinpoint what you want. A brand that stands out in the industry is Subaru. Known for being a safe reliable vehicle with great handling, Subarus hold their resale value. According to the Kelley Blue Book list of 2022 vehicles with the best resale value, the Subaru Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback topped the list as the best SUVs that retain their value.

Now that you are convinced owning Subaru is in your future, there is only one dealership to go to, Schulte Subaru of Sioux Falls. What sets them apart is their commitment to serving you. They honor this commitment by taking sales pressure out of the car-buying equation. Rather than working off commission sales, Schulte Subaru rewards their sales staff with a consistent income and incentives that are based on team performance rather than individual performance. In fact, rather than hiring staff from within the industry, Schulte Subaru usually hires staff without previous car sales experience and provides training to ensure that undesired sales tactics are not used during the process.

Unlike other dealerships that transfer you to the finance department once you have decided to buy the car, at Schulte Subaru you will stay with the same sales representative from start to finish. The need

to renegotiate terms, the fear of being sold unnecessary additional services, and having to spend half your day at the dealership just to buy a car doesn’t exist at Schulte Subaru. By breaking down lines between departments that exist in other dealerships, cross-training staff in all service lines, and investing in their employee’s growth and personal development Schulte Subaru has created a team culture that is personable and fun. For this dealership, selling cars is what they do and not who they are. This is why anyone no matter their age or gender can be confident that they will be treated honestly and fairly whether they are buying a new or used car or trading in their current vehicle. By listening and learning from customer feedback Schulte Subaru’s unmatched customer service makes them confident in their ability to satisfy every customer.

What makes Schulte Subaru even more of an attractive choice is its state-of-the-art facility that was built with the customer in mind. They are open daily Monday-Thursday 7:30 am-7:00 pm, Friday until 6:00 pm, Saturday from 8:00 am-6:00 pm, and Sunday from 1:00-4:00 pm, ensuring they are open at times that are convenient for you to shop. Schulte Subaru has a large selection of new and used vehicles to choose from. The showroom is large enough for at least one of each Subaru, so if the South Dakota climate isn’t cooperating, you can comfortably shop. If you’re bringing your vehicle in for service or bodywork, you get the benefits of their complimentary shuttle service, a loaner Subaru, or Schulte Concierge Service. Plus, you can relax in Schulte Subaru’s comfortable customer lounge with free Wi-fi, an internet bar with a charging station, large-screen TVs, massage chairs, video games, snacks, and self-service beverages.

ADVERTORIAL

Speaking of creature comforts, they recently added an 11,000-square-foot community dog park that is open to the public.

One more equally important reason to choose Schulte Subaru over its amenities is its values. Owners Mike and Sarah Schulte are devoted to the idea that every interaction is a chance to make the world a better place, which is why you can find them in the dealership working alongside their employees most days. Their commitment to their employees and the community is why Schulte Subaru was named The Subaru Love Promise Retailer of the Year for 2020 and South Dakota Auto Dealers 2021 Dealer of the Year. For them, kindness is not just a word, it is a way of doing business. They share the love through their commitment to community, whether it’s supporting 10,000 animals yearly at the Sioux Falls Humane Society or donating custom vehicles to help the B-Squad Dog Rescue team transport thousands of at-risk dogs. Schulte Subaru has been a true friend to animals in need. Their generosity also extends to other organizations as well including Great Bear Ski Valley, connecting families through fun activities; the Mayor’s Veterans Community Project, providing tiny homes for homeless veterans; the Children’s Home Society, providing shelter to children to escape abusive environments, and donating 3 cars to Meals on Wheels ensuring those in need have access to food.

Schulte Subaru truly embodies the phrase, Love. It’s what makes Subaru, Subaru.

Fire, Water, and

Nature

When Justin and Lynnette Ingalls set out to build their dream home, they had a theme in mind. The Ingalls emphasized the design elements of fire, water, and nature to Brad and Tami Streich of Streich Construction, a husband/wife builder team, and their designer, Kayla Hathaway, of Montgomery’s. Brad said, “I met the Ingalls at a gathering, and we quickly became friends so when they decided to build a new home, they reached out to me. We had tons of meetings to finalize plans and I learned the vibe of what they wanted. I knew they wanted an open floor plan with a lot of windows, they said the more windows the better.” From the moment you walk in the door, you’re immediately greeted with a floor-toceiling stone waterfall feature, a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and two large arch windows. It is safe to say that their mission has been successfully completed for a one-of-a-kind fire, water, and nature-themed home. Not only is the in-home waterfall feature stunning, but it is also very calming as the soft trickle of water lightly cascades down the wall. The stone background of the waterfall ties into the nearby stone fireplace and creates a natural ambiance.

The oversized arch windows flanking each side of the waterfall showcase a beautiful view overlooking Mystic Creek Development and beyond, which helps bring nature in. The arch windows tie in with the arch wall cutouts on each side of the fireplace painted Sherwin Williams Sage Green Light. The paint color helps pick right up where nature has left off. The Ingalls daughter, Calli, custommade the artwork on each side of the fireplace, both are showcased gallery style with sconces.

Hathaway shared, “This home has a spa-like feel. When you walk in, it is so serene and throughout the day the light changes and gives different dramatic effects. During the daytime, you feel like you are outside because of all the natural light and large windows. At nighttime, when the ambient lights are on, you are picking up the beauty of the home.” Lynnette Ingalls also shared, “Our guests say the waterfall and the arch windows make our home feel like a resort.” Not only is Lynnette quick to give Brad, Tami, and Kayla credit for her beautiful home, but she also explained, “My girlfriend Sandy Stadheim, who owns House of Dreams, comes and tweaks things and adds little touches and she has such a great feel for where things should go.”

You will find many unique features and attention to detail throughout this fivebedroom, four-bath, 5,000-square-foot home. The stone backsplash, reeded range hood, and island add some texture to the kitchen and complement the curved black walnut butcher block countertop. The high-end Wolf appliances, a plethora of lighting, and a walk-in pantry with an additional sink make this any chef’s dream kitchen.

Conveniently located off the kitchen are a three-season porch with a commercial outdoor cooking station, a custom-built stone range hood, and a stone fireplace. Just down the hall is a gorgeous half bath with a black toilet and sink paired with gold accents. The primary suite is just as elegant with its black and gold sconces, two-person jacuzzi tub, steam shower with music, LED lighting, and aromatherapy built into the room. The ceiling in the steam shower is even sloped so the water runs down the tiled wall and not down the glass.

As you make your way to the lower level you can’t help but notice a beautiful feature wall that the builder’s wife, Tami Streich, helped design. Tami said, “Brad is very hands-on and does all the finish carpentry himself, laid the floors, made the beams, and much more. I love being Brad’s partner and working alongside

him, even if it means getting my nails dirty.” The basement is just as full of character as the main level. The sconce wall is jawdropping gorgeous with its seven oversized natural wood sconces imported from Brazil. The lighting and most of the furniture and décor throughout are from Montgomery’s. Joining the lower level two-bedroom suite is a Jack and Jill bathroom, perfect for hosting overnight guests (that may never want to leave.) The exquisite, suspended vanity and tiled walk-in shower carry that resort-like feel from upstairs to downstairs. The large 16’ bar paired with an 8’ 4” island was designed for entertaining. The home gym conveniently located in the basement has an infrared sauna with a unique entrance that could never be duplicated. Brad Streich explained, “The wood surrounding the entrance came from an old grain elevator from Summit, South Dakota, and is over 100 years old. Justin had no idea what I had planned for the gym entrance, but he trusted me and cut me loose. With Justin’s farm background, I knew he would really appreciate the authentic, real wood. The Ingalls appreciate the uniqueness and are very pleased with how it turned out.” Kayla said, “This home was made for entertaining as the Ingalls love to entertain and it’s a great gathering spot.” This home, its natural elements, and luxury finishes created by Streich Construction and Montgomery’s Furniture is a sanctuary for the Ingalls. n

BEAUTY & FUNCTION

Often overlooked or under-appreciated window treatments help manage light, provide beautiful views, and sometimes make or break a design. Like jewelry complements your wardrobe, window treatments can set the tone for your favorite nesting place.

If you have found yourself looking for coverings, whether to enhance the aesthetic, cover a bare window, fix existing treatments, or create functionality, what’s your next step? The answer, seek help from a professional at Budget Blinds who can provide a free in-home consultation with excellent customer services and will stand behind their products. Design Consultant Morgan Dale relates, “Our professional staff focuses on one thing and one thing only, window treatments! The displays in our showroom can definitely get you inspired, but our design consultants will ask the right questions, listen, and ultimately narrow down the thousands of possibilities to a few window treatment selections that work best for you.”

Blinds, shades, shutters, and drapes have been traditionally available over the years. These options come in virtually limitless styles, fabrics, and materials, varying in multiple price points. All products can be motorized as well, either by hardwiring or battery packs. Morgan shares, “Smart window treatments are here and it’s a fast-growing part of what we do. If you are building or remodeling a home right now, we encourage you to stop in and talk with one of our specialists about motorized window treatments. We can build our own smart network, or in many cases, we can connect to your desired smart network.”

As to following trends, it’s really about execution versus style. Morgan notes, “Trends can be tricky; we deal with different clients and designers that all have a different opinion of what good design is. Any type of style, newer or older, Modern or Vintage Colonial, if done well, is less susceptible to falling out of trend. With that being said, our designers will help find the right product for everyone’s style!” n

Crafting Exceptional Experiences

Wendy Wills strives to exceed expectations and deliver excellence at First International Bank and Trust.

Fresh out of college, Wendy Wills had never considered working in the financial services industry. However, with double degrees in Studio Art and Communications, she was a perfect match for a marketing position at a bank that was presented to her early in her career. Now, 25 years later she has worked her way up through nearly every position in the financial services marketing sector to the role she serves in currently as Chief Experience Officer at First International Bank & Trust in Sioux Falls.

In her position, she works diligently to align her customers’ needs with financial products that can be used seamlessly and effectively in their everyday life. She enjoys working with all areas of the bank while directly overseeing multiple departments including Marketing, Digital Branch, Customer Care Center, and Debit/Credit Cards. Wendy shares, “As the Chief Experience Officer, I am often an audience advocate. Whether that audience is a segment of our customer base, a community or an employee group. I see my areas of influence as being someone who helps carefully craft the gap between what the bank is offering to how end users will receive it.”

Not a woman to settle for the status quo, Wendy strives to help craft experiences that allow customers to focus on what matters most in their lives. “We’re not a company that is satisfied being average – we want to be leaders, innovators, and impact-makers. Witnessing the great things we are able to do for our customers and our communities and being a part of a growing company that is driven to make a difference is what I love.”

For Wendy, having a positive attitude and always pushing herself to be better is not only how she approaches each day, but how she approaches serving others. This includes both internal and external relationships. She notes, “ The most finite aspect of our lives is time. As a business in the service industry, we are competing with other banks that offer similar things. The difference lies in how we deliver those services and the experiences

A great day for me at work is being able to check all the boxes on my list for the day. I’m a list-maker; I like to set goals and accomplish them. A great day for me outside of work includes plenty of self-care: massages, pedicures, good food and quality time with my 3-year-old daughter Maelie.

2. Where do you feel some healthcare departments in our state may be falling short in implementing infection control procedures? I feel sometimes Housekeeping gets taken for granted as part of an Infection Control Plan. The Environmental Services role is vital in infection prevention. We need to make sure every healthcare worker has the resources and education they need.

3. What kind of Project Firstline (PFL) infection prevention training did you attend? I have attended online, in-person, zoom, and a team session here at Douglas County Memorial Hospital in Armour. I like that the training is clear and to the point.

4. Can you give a specific example of how PFL has helped you? The training has increased my confidence as an Infection Control Officer. The Hand Hygiene education was a great refresher – it reiterated to me how important the due diligence of handwashing is in overall infection prevention.

5. Final thoughts? The SD PFL team does a great job! I love the SD PFL website! So much information to learn and share -- I encourage everyone to check it out: www.sdprojectfirstline.org. I definitely recommend PFL! As a newer Infection Preventionist, Project Firstline has helped me tremendously!

We are here, there, everywhere.

A Year in the Life with Earlens!

Not your grandma’s hearing aidEarlens is an exciting innovation for treating hearing loss

It’s a golden era for hearing health patients who choose Earlens.

Bob Froke, an audiologist at Midwest ENT & Allergy, believes it is a truly dynamic product. He has become a big fan of Earlens. Why so? Froke has had his own Earlens for 18 months and says he will never go back to any other hearing device. Froke lost some of his hearing after experiencing an illness, and it never returned once he was well again.

“You shouldn’t have to think about your hearing,” said Froke. “The technology of Earlens makes that possible. Earlens wearers experience better speech clarity with less listening effort in a noisy environment.”

Earlens technology consists of a rechargeable processor, custom ear tip, and custom lens. It features directional microphones that adapt to different listening environments. And then there is Bluetooth, streaming, noise reduction, feedback cancellation, and five customizable programs.

MORE THAN THE TECHNOLOGY

Besides the incredible technology, there is another reason why Froke loves his Earlens. He gives us a review of the past 18 months with this revolutionary hearing system, voted Top 3 on Time Magazine’s Top 100 list of inventions for 2020!

“Listening to music has become an enjoyable experience,” says Froke. “Music is clear and more enjoyable because it provides two and a half times broader broadband width than conventional hearing aids, so I appreciate all the subtleties of the notes that were not audible to me before because of my hearing

sfw | HEALTH

loss. It’s just such a richer experience.”

As important as Earlens has become to perform his job as an audiologist and daily tasks, Froke finds his Earlens also enhances his most meaningful connections.

“I don’t ever feel so mentally exhausted at the end of the day from having to concentrate so hard to understand what is being said around me. It is just so much easier to flow with conversations, and I feel more confident that I am hearing and responding appropriately throughout conversations.”

Having Earlens himself allows Froke to give his hear loss patients a first-hand account of how they work and how it will positively enhance their lives.

“Without a doubt, my Earlens truly has improved my overall health and wellness.”

HOW IT WORKS

To appreciate Earlens technology, you must know how it works.

The Earlens system sets behind the ear and features microphones, a digital signal processor, a transmitter, and a rechargeable battery. It receives and converts sound into an enhanced electromagnetic signal which moves from the processor to the ear tip to the lens, floating in contact with the patient’s eardrum. The lens then converts the electromagnetic signal into a gentle vibration the wearer perceives as enhanced high fidelity.

Earlens is a custom fit for each user. A Midwest ENT & Allergy physician places a lens in the eardrum and then adjusts the placement. This is all done as an in-office procedure. The physician and audiologist work together to provide 5-star service for their Earlens patients.

And unlike traditional hearing aids, Earlens works with a patient’s natural hearing system by gently vibrating the eardrum via a tiny, custom-built lens. And there is no whistling feedback that often comes with conventional hearing aids.

“It uses the technology of Apple and can be paired with Apple devices,” Froke added.

Experiencing hearing loss? Call Midwest ENT & Allergy to schedule a consultation and see if Earlens is right for you. n

Don’t Ignore the Signs of Prediabetes

Can a health problem actually be considered a blessing?

Yes, according to Mary Lobb Oyos, RN, MS, who serves as a Diabetes Program Manager at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. “Prediabetes is the check-engine light on the dashboard of life,” she said.

A diagnosis of prediabetes gives you the opportunity to do something about it before it causes long-term, permanent, and costly damage.

“When you find out you have it, it’s an opportunity — a warning, too — but a chance to take control, improve your overall health and reverse the condition,” said Sabrina Taylor, DO, family medicine physician at Avera Medical Group McGreevy 7th Avenue.

HOW PREDIABETES RELATES TO TYPE 2 DIABETES

Prediabetes is among America’s most widespread health problems; it is the precursor to type 2 diabetes. In both forms, diabetes is a disease that affects how our bodies deal with the glucose (sugar) in food. The hormone insulin helps our blood cells process glucose into energy. People with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes do not make enough insulin, and their cells don’t use the insulin correctly.

48 SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2023 sfw | HEALTH

When prediabetes is untreated, it can become type 2 diabetes. That condition brings risks of blindness, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, nerve damage, and amputation.

“Prediabetes is something to take seriously,” said Oyos. “Identify your risk factors for prediabetes and talk with your provider about getting tested. The sooner prediabetes is diagnosed, you can begin to make changes to improve your health.”

Risk factors include:

• Age 45 or older

• Family history of type 2 diabetes or prediabetes

• Overweight

• Inactive lifestyle

• Diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) or giving birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds

GET SCREENED FOR HIGH BLOOD SUGAR

To stay on top of your blood sugar level, your doctor can order a fasting blood sugar check, or an HA1C, which is a blood test that measures average blood sugar over three months.

Here’s what your results of a fasting blood sugar check mean:

• 99 mg/dL or lower is normal

• 100 to 125 mg/dL indicates prediabetes

• 126 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes

“If your blood sugars are normal, it is reasonable to get checked every three years,” said Taylor. “However, if your sugars are elevated and you have prediabetes, you should get checked every year.”

HOW TO REVERSE OR PREVENT PREDIABETES

Often, prediabetes can be reversed or prevented with simple lifestyle changes focused on diet, activity, and weight loss said Taylor. Take steps such as:

Focus on a whole-food diet. Decrease carbohydrates in your diet, such as candy, pastries, cookies, and breakfast cereals. “One great tip is to ‘shop the perimeter’ of the store,” said Taylor.

Exercise regularly. Getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week can improve your blood sugars. For example, take a 30-minute walk five times a week.

Lose weight. Losing about 5-7% of your body weight can help your blood sugars and reverse prediabetes.

Stop smoking. This helps your body process insulin better.

You can schedule an appointment with your primary care provider to talk more about preventing prediabetes and diabetes. Learn more at Avera.org/services/diabetes-endocrinology. n

Karmazin Dental Can Help

TIME

What we like our patients to know is that we love to get as much dental treatment done at one visit as possible. When we work, we like to work on everything in that area. We want to give our patients the chance to say yes to the best care possible. Often we do this together with oral sedation and FEWER WELL-PLANNED VISITS.

FEAR

Oral sedation is THE #1 tool we use to help patients conquer their fear of dental treatment. Once we have an accurate medical history, we can best prescribe the right anti-anxiety medicine that will be taken one hour before your dental appointment. This has become so popular in our office that we often recommend sedation if an appointment is longer than two hours.

MONEY

We make a commitment to our patients that we will not proceed with dental treatment before they know:

1. What we are doing

2. How long it will take

3. How much it is going to cost

4. Their payment options

We use many third party financing companies and have found solutions to fit most of our patients’ monthly budgets. We strive to make dental work affordable for our patients.

GOELLERHeidi

Breathing Melody and Harmony into the Song of Life

Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

Makeup by Megan Bertsch Beauty

Asymphony is a musical composition of typically four movements written for an orchestra. If Sioux Falls resident Heidi Goeller’s life took the form of a symphony, the movements would be the seasons of her life, with the orchestra comprised of all the people who bless her existence with their songs.

OVERTURE

Heidi began music lessons at age seven with her musically active siblings. She recalls that making music in her household was commonplace: “When I had friends come over to my house, I discovered that I loved teaching them how to play songs on the piano.” Those early experiences revealed a passion for teaching and planted the seed that Heidi should become a music teacher when she grew up.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Vocal and Violin Performance from the University of Sioux Falls, Heidi moved to Nashville, Tennessee. She taught private music lessons to over fifty students each week. In addition, she performed as a studio vocalist and violinist during recording sessions. Heidi is married to composer, orchestrator, and conductor Dan Goeller. When the couple became parents, Heidi’s musical emphasis shifted from teaching and performing to co-writing and co-producing musical projects with Dan. These works have been performed by churches, universities, community choirs, and orchestras worldwide.

April/May 2023 | SiouxFallsWoman.net 53

THE ENSEMBLE

Heidi and Dan’s three children are Grace (19), Alli (17), and Leo (10). The Goeller children are all involved in music or theater. As their homeschool instructor, Heidi says, “I enjoy the opportunity to homeschool my kids, and it has been a privilege to see them learn and grow and discover the things they love. I am so grateful for that time I’ve had to share with each of them.”

Heidi explains her affinity for music: “Performing music is a unique opportunity to share truth and beauty with others. It brings me joy to share the talents God has given me with my community.” She adds, “Music has always been a special part of my life, and I am honored to be able to share that gift with others.”

Opportunities to share her gift continued to appear, as in 2009, Heidi was the female vocal soloist for the Christmas at the Cathedral concert series. Then, in 2013, she began serving as the concertmaster of the Christmas at the Cathedral orchestra. Heidi acknowledges, “I enjoy this opportunity to make meaningful music in a beautiful and sacred space and to be a part of an event that brings joy and hope to the Sioux Falls community.”

CREATING HARMONY

A conducting trip to Chihuahua, Mexico, in 2013 changed Dan’s life by introducing him to a program called “El Sistema,” the system. Using music as a tool to change the life trajectory of kids, they learn life skills by learning and performing music with excellence. According to Heidi, “Dan came back from that trip changed—and wanted to move our family of 5 to Mexico to be involved in a Sistema program. I convinced him that there were plenty of kids in need of a Sistema program in the city of Sioux Falls.”

In 2014, the couple launched Harmony South Dakota. This free after-school program that meets every afternoon of the school year started with 25 kids from Hawthorne Elementary. Today, Harmony has grown to 80 kids from many Sioux Falls schools. Several older Harmony students are pursuing music degrees and would like to teach at Harmony following college graduation.

Cooperation, perseverance, teamwork, and self-discipline are the life skills and concepts taught at Harmony. Students participate in choir, orchestra, and percussion ensembles and receive private lessons. Using the mindset of turning obstacles

April/May 2023 | SiouxFallsWoman.net 55

into opportunities and problems into possibilities, Heidi explains the most crucial aspect of the program by adding, “We make sure that students know that they are known, loved, and valued.”

Heidi wants children to experience beauty and goodness through music, which is part of every culture around the world and a universal language that connects people. She exclaims, “Music is a gift from God, and it can express things that words alone cannot. Music can paint vivid pictures in our minds, evoke emotions, take us on an adventure, or comfort an aching heart. It has the power to uplift and encourage, to soothe and calm, or to invigorate and energize. There would certainly be a gaping void in a world without music.”

Regarding the scientific benefits of music, Heidi explains, “Music is a powerful art form that uniquely engages both hemispheres of the brain at once. Studies have shown that musical experience for as little as 15 months leads to structural brain changes and improves motor and auditory skills. Children that play instruments for at least two years show enhanced cognitive control. Musical training sets up students for a better academic future.”

TEMPO AND PITCH

Not all songs are happy and upbeat. In June 2021, Heidi was completely shocked when she was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). A slightly enlarged lymph node on the back of her neck led to bloodwork that revealed CLL, which her oncologist estimates has existed for 5 or 6 years. CLL is slow-growing cancer typically treated when the patient becomes symptomatic, which means that since Heidi is physically feeling fine, she is in the “Watch and Wait” stage.

Heidi wasn’t content with inaction after the diagnosis. “It didn’t feel right to just sit back and do nothing, knowing this cancer was growing inside me. I decided to change my life radically.” She adopted a whole and primarily organic plant-based diet and paired it with daily exercise, doing what she could to reduce stress loads and spending time in prayer and meditation.

Grateful for the love and support from her husband, kids, friends, and family, Heidi feels that her faith has been strengthened tremendously since the diagnosis. “I refuse to live in fear—since I know that my Savior, Jesus Christ, is walking through each challenge right by my side.” In moments of doubt or despair, Heidi gratefully remembers the amazing things in her life as she says, “Gratitude is the secret to happiness.” n

Keeping the family home in the family

You have always been there for your family, and you will want them taken care of after you are gone. In the event of your passing, family income is reduced, and expenses can start to pile up, the largest of which is usually the home mortgage.

Mortgage Protection Insurance is an insurance policy for you, explains Crystal Erickson owner of the Crystal Erickson Agency.

“This insurance is designed to help pay off your mortgage or make monthly payments if anything happens. The money goes to you and your family, not the bank,” she said. “Many mortgages may rely on two incomes to pay the bill. If anything happens to one of the income earners, I help put a policy in place so the surviving spouse can

continue living in the home and not worry about how to pay the mortgage.”

It is all about protecting home equity by making monthly mortgage payments.

“Mortgage protection insurance looks different to everyone, and that is why I offer options to my clients,” said Crystal. “It could be a life insurance policy, accidental death policy, critical illness, or disability income policy. It could be for a certain number of years or their entire lives.”

There is also a return of premium option when clients outlive the policy.

“They get all their money returned,” said Crystal. “Many of my policies also have living benefits riders at no additional

58 SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2023

cost. If the client is diagnosed with a critical, chronic, or terminal illness, they can receive an accelerated death benefit payable as a lump sum.”

Connecting with her clients and understanding their needs is a priority for Crystal.

“We talk about what they may already have in place and what they might look for. Then I shop around with over 30 different carriers to get the best product for their needs. Even if you don’t have a mortgage, I can still help you protect your family with insurance.”

Crystal says the application process isn’t complicated.

“Most applications can be done over the phone. It takes as little as 15 minutes for some applications with no blood work and no medical exams.”

Cost depends on age, medication, and health history.

“Mortgage protection insurance is more affordable than most people think.”

Crystal has been married to her husband Andy for 15 years. They have three children – Jackie, Rockley, and Esia. The family lives in Sioux Falls.

What's New: Encompass Wellness

New wellness clinic helps optimize your hormones and your health for amazing results

Story and photos by

When it comes to aging, many of us have been told that fatigue, dry, dull skin and hair, loss of mental sharpness, weight gain, and multiple other issues are simply a ‘natural’ part of getting older. If you’re not ready to throw in the towel and accept that but want to discover the real reasons you aren’t feeling like yourself anymore, Mary J. Jordan (MJ) Certified Family Nurse Practitioner is here to help.

Located in Sioux Falls, MJ specializes in caring for the physical, mental, and sexual health of her patients. She shares, “I started my business because I am passionate about healthcare and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). I love hearing the stories patients tell me about how much their lives and relationships have changed after starting HRT. I worked at a clinic in Sioux City for two years and had patients coming to me from Sioux Falls, SD, and Luverne, MN. They would drive two to four hours to the clinic for HRT and were persistent in getting me to come to Sioux Falls, SD.”

She does hormone replacement therapy in the form of a testosterone or estradiol pellet. The pellets are the size of a grain of rice and are placed under the subcutaneous fat of the upper buttocks. The pellets are bioidentical to the hormones that your body makes and are all natural. They are made from yams and soy. Women have the pellets placed every 3 months and men every 6 months.

MJ’s commitment to treating the root cause of her patient’s healthcare issues has led her to specialize in working to reverse disease rather than merely treating the symptoms. Her clinic, Encompass Wellness, provides HRT services for women and men to address problems caused by hormonal imbalances. In addition, she also provides IV hydration, and weight-loss strategies through customized plans including nutrition planning, nutraceuticals, fat-loss cream, semaglutide, and peptides to increase your metabolism as well as Botox® and filler.

According to MJ, “As we age, our endocrine system

60 SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2023
sfw | PROFILES

decreases hormonal production, which can affect a wide range of natural processes in our bodies. As women lose testosterone, they experience a lack of well-being; fatigue; weight gain; joint pain; brain fog; lack of libido; mood changes like irritability, anxiety, and depression; urinary incontinence; hot flashes, and night sweats. As men lose testosterone, they experience a decrease in libido and sexual performance, sleep and mood are affected, muscle and strength decrease, fatigue, and weight gain.”

Her philosophy is to help individuals optimize their health to enjoy life to the fullest. “Many of us assume as we age, we are supposed to feel unwell. Patients have come to me saying they have been to their primary care provider and were told everything is normal. The hormone labs are normal for their age, but we don’t want to feel our age. Biote® HRT optimizes the hormones by putting them back to the level you were at in your early 20s where you felt the best. Hormone deficiency causes many health issues and affects our quality of life.”

Encompass Wellness is an allinclusive health center. As a nurse practitioner, MJ addresses many common health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid function, and depression. She has been a certified Biote® provider for over 2 years.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR OMEGA-3 INDEX?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that regulate your blood and brain’s structure and ability to perform. Omega-3s EPA and DHA are known to play specific roles in the structure and function of the brain and have important risk factor benefits for heart protection. About 60% of the brain is made up of fat. In fact, it’s one of the fattiest organs in the human body. It’s also one of the most important organs, as it plays a role in just about every major body system. “The higher the EPA level in the blood, the lower the rates of the different cardiovascular events, cardiovascular deaths, and even total mortality,” Dr. Bhatt said.

For health practitioners and consumers, the Omega-3 Index can be used as a tool to help personalize omega-3 intake. In other words, it can help them measure, modify and monitor these important nutrients in the diet. This is particularly important because there are so many individual variations in diet, genetics, and lifestyle.

There is also a lot of confusion when it comes to locating the most appropriate sources of omega3s. The reality is it doesn’t matter where your omega-3s come from – as long as whatever you’re consuming delivers a meaningful amount of EPA and DHA, enough that puts you in the protective zone of 8% on the Omega-3 Index scale. I recommend 1-2 grams of EPA and DHA daily.

Get the Omega-3 Index test at Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic for 20% discount months of April and May. OmegaMax capsules are also discounted 20%.

Waking up with permanentmakeup

Women looking for convenience are turning to permanent cosmetics to cut down time on their morning beauty routine.

Permanent cosmetic makeup (PMU) is a procedure that thickens, darkens, or reshapes eyebrows, eyes, and lips infusing pigments into the skin.

"PMU is effortless beauty," says Jenny Russell, owner of Fabulips Studio in Brandon.

“It is a means of achieving a beautiful, polished look and can take years off your appearance. Whether you have a busy and active lifestyle, struggle with application technique, or just want the convenience of less fuss in your day, permanent makeup can assist you in achieving a fresh and fabulous look.”

Although PMU is technically a permanent procedure, that reference is a bit misleading Jenny explains. “These cosmetic procedures are semi-permanent. Unlike ‘normal’ tattoo procedures, cosmetic PMU uses different formulated pigments (colored ink) that will fade over time. Depending on a client’s skin type and maintenance routine, a PMU procedure will typically last about three years, and possibly longer.

Jenny says there truly is a noticeable, visual difference between tattooing and PMU.

“Cosmetic PMU is a tattoo technique that can leave you with fuller brows, tinted lips and a sharp cat eye for years – no beauty products needed. And unlike the tattooed makeup of the 80s and 90s, permanent makeup of today actually looks like makeup and not a line of tattooed ink along your eyelids or mouth.”

Jenny trained at Permanent Makeup Academy by Lash and Brow Bar in Hackensack, NJ, and is a certified permanent makeup artist qualified in numerous aesthetic procedures including eyebrows, lips, eyeliner, and scar camouflage.

“I am passionate about being a beauty artist and about empowering others, especially women, through cosmetic enhancements and restorative beauty,” she said. “I am a perfectionist by nature and pride myself in having a keen eye for designing and enhancing natural beauty through subtle definition, custom cosmetic artistry, permanent makeup techniques, and color theory.”

Born and raised in Kailua, HI, and having attended Colorado State University from 2002-2006, Jenny graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History, Political Science, and Aerospace Studies. Upon

62 SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2023 sfw | PROFILES

graduating she received her commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force as a Logistics Readiness Officer. She went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry Riddle University. After serving almost 12 years on active duty, she and her husband Ryan moved to Sioux Falls to raise their sons Landon and Logan and be close to family.

Jenny says it was a good move to choose to be a permanent makeup artist and open her studio.

“I was determined to find a career that I loved. I wanted to do something that helped others within my community and ‘fit’ with our family. This is when I focused on aiding other professional women who juggle family and career and chose to become a PMU artist. I do what I love so it never feels like work.”

Fabulips Studio is located at 314 S. Splitrock Blvd., Suite 6 in Brandon. Contact Jenny at 605.380.4490. n

Owner Laura Hanson, Certified Educator of Infant Massage (CEIM) along with her daughter Liz Aragon, CEIM at Your Nurtured Baby provide unique expertise that brings natural tools for common problems that many babies and their parents experience.

Laura decided to become certified in infant massage after experiencing challenges with her daughter Mara. “My two-yearold daughter was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect. We couldn’t find anyone in the Sioux Falls area who taught it, so we took it upon ourselves to get certified and bring it to local families.”

For the past year, Laura and Liz have been providing private training and support for families in their homes. Today, they operate out of

a bright and welcoming spa/store where they provide education and therapies as well as baby clothing, essentials, bath items, toys, teethers, gifts, home items, and all-natural products for babies and moms.
