Success continues to drive Sioux Falls
We have much to celebrate in Sioux Falls and here at the Chamber.
Thanks to our amazing volunteers, we have completed another successful Ambassador’s membership drive. Businesses and individuals continue to find value in the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce — both in what supporting the Chamber can do for an individual business as well as the collective benefits that come from joining the region’s strongest business advocacy organization.
Our economy continues to be recognized: For the second straight year, Sioux Falls was among the top 10 Strongest Metro Areas, according to policom.com. Sioux Falls is the smallest city on the list, keeping company with cities like Austin, Texas; Madison, Wis.; and Nashville. The research backs up what we already know here in Sioux Falls — our economy is robust and has created consistent economic growth despite national trends.
Construction season is upon us.

...our economy is robust and has created consistent economic growth despite national trends.
ROB OLIVER
Numbers from the City show that construction values for the first four months of 2013 have already exceeded the benchmark of $200 million — about double what it was at this time last year at $238 million through the month of April. This is the first time construction valuation for building permits has ever reached that milestone in April. The construction cones are a respite from the late spring snow and ice and a sign that things are moving ahead in Sioux Falls.
A recent survey from the City of Sioux Falls shows that more than 90 percent of respondents ranked the quality of life here as good or excellent. People appreciated the
opportunities to volunteer and the overall image and reputation of Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce provides numerous opportunities to get involved, and working collectively with other organizations, continues to improve and enhance the quality of life here. We’re gearing up for our tourism season, which has a significant economic impact on our community and also provides ample opportunities for area residents to take advantage of attractions and events.
When things seem to be at their worst is often when we see people at their best. The recent tragedies at the Boston Mara-

thon and in West, Texas, illustrate our country’s ability to band together to mourn and to rebuild. Locally, the April ice and snowstorms destroyed many trees, damaged homes and left many residents without power. I thank all of our members who responded to help those in need and have been affected. Thank you also to the City of Sioux Falls leadership for their quick and effective response in assisting residents and businesses.

CVB awards travel packages through sweepstakes
The “Sights, Sounds and Sensations” sweepstakes to win a travel package for four to Sioux Falls Nov. 22-24, 2013 concluded at the end of February.
Launched in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Tourism, the effort targeted leisure travelers in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. More than 20.3 million people were reached and generated 6,173 new leads. Ginger Hollister from Des Moines, Iowa, was the grand prize winner.
The “Get Your Game On” hunting sweepstakes to win a travel package for four to Sioux Falls, Nov. 1-3, 2013 also
concluded at the end of February. The campaign focused on positioning Sioux Falls as “THE” connection to beginning and ending travel to South Dakota for pheasant hunting. Potential hunters who were most likely to fly to South Dakota to hunt were targeted in Wisconsin, Missouri, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, California, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina. More than 2.5 million people were reached online with a low cost per conversion, producing 2,338 new leads. Ronald Fry from Charlotte, N.C., was the grand prize winner.

CVB promotes Sioux Falls at new show
The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) attended Destination Midwest April 7-9 in Detroit, M.I.. The show is established by two media brands in the meeting industry, Successful Meetings and Meetings & Conventions. The threeday show took place at the MGM Grand, where the CVB conducted 14 one-on-one pre-scheduled appointments with meeting planners from across the U.S. who are fo-

cused on bringing their meetings to a Midwest destination.
Midwest destinations represented at the show included North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio. The Sioux Falls CVB was one of 18 exhibitors.
Sioux Falls part of the Scott’s Ride for Miracles
Scott Ressmeyer, co-owner of Country’s Barbecue in Columbus, Ga., and 11 friends boarded motorcycles to embark upon a 21-day, 48-state journey to raise awareness and money for the needs and services supported by Children’s Miracle Network at The Medical Center.
The Miracle Riders plan to visit patients at several CMN hospitals along the way including Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls. Traveling from Montana, they will enter South Dakota into Rapid City and travel to Sioux Falls. The group will stay overnight on May 15 and
continue to Chicago. They will also contribute to a blog to journal their travels.

To date, Scott’s Ride for Miracles has raised more than $430,000 to purchase equipment for the NICU and PICU at The Medical Center. Ressmeyer says the ultimate goal now is to raise $1 million throughout the course of the Ride. People interested in following their blogs may log onto www.rideformiracles.com. For more information contact Anne Holmes at (706) 660-6566 or anne.holmes@crhs.net.

Landsat 8 to go operational May 30
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will formally transfer the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center for operational execution.
On May 30, LDCM will become known as Landsat 8. In addition, EROS will be recognizing its 40th Anniversary (19732013) as part of this important achievement.
The transfer is the culmination of more than eight years of hard work by NASA and the USGS EROS on the planning and development of the next Landsat satellite mission. The satellite launched on Feb. 11. The NASA and USGS EROS partnership has
existed for the entire 40-plus years of the Landsat satellite program. NASA is primarily responsible for building and launching the satellite and USGS EROS is responsible for the ground aspects, which includes flying and operating the satellite and receiving, processing, archiving, and distributing the data. EROS staff have been working to ensure the ground and network systems are in place to perform all of those tasks.
Landsat 8 going operational means that EROS will continue to add to what is the longest, most comprehensive record of the condition of the Earth ever assembled and extending the 40-year record to hopefully 50 years. More information about the May 30 event will be announced in the coming weeks.

CVB sales team blitzes Washington, D.C. area
The Sioux Falls CVB conducted their annual Washington, D.C. Sales Blitz April 1419, promoting Sioux Falls as a top meeting, convention and event destination. The D.C. area is home to thousands of organizations and associations who plan annual, regional and national events.
The annual sales blitz allows the CVB sales team to build rapport through one-onone meetings with each organization to provide information to planners on everything Sioux Falls has to offer as a host city. The CVB sales team pre-scheduled a record number of 41 appointments for the four-day blitz.
The sales team shared news on Sioux Falls’ new facilities and many planners communicated the need for additional ho-
tel rooms and breakout rooms required on site before they could book some of their groups in Sioux Falls. Ideally, 500 total hotel rooms need to be attached to the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, Sioux Falls Convention Center and Sioux Falls Arena. Planners would also like to see a minimum of 20 flexible breakout rooms large enough to simultaneously hold 200 theater-style or 200 classroom-style sessions.
The CVB will continue to work the leads gathered from the blitz, reaching out to local community business leaders as many of the organizations require local member support to secure the business. Business leads reached out as far as 2023.

Landsat 8 launched on Feb. 11 and NASA will formerly transfer the LDCM to EROS on May 30.
