MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Chamber membership is good business investment

A membership in the Chamber does more than say you’re “Open for Business.”

A national survey of 2,000 adults reveals that being active in a local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy because two-thirds of consumers believe that such companies use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers, and are involved in the community. If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., is a chamber board member), consumers are 10 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition, according to The Schapiro Group.

If you’re a small business, you’re in good company — the majority of our members have 10 or fewer employees. The Schapiro Group’s study found that Chamber membership has consistent and powerful benefits for small business members, if consumers are aware that the small business is involved in its local Chamber. If respondents know that a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business

enjoys a 49 percent increase in its consumer favorability rating, a 73 percent increase in consumer awareness, a 68 percent in crease in its local reputation and an 80 percent in crease in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future.

That same study found that businesses that are members of a local chamber of commerce are automatically considered by consumers to be trustworthy and customeroriented — a valuable brand image to have in our community by anyone’s standards.

However, it’s not just involvement in the Chamber that benefits you, though there are plenty of opportunities to do just

that. A Chamber membership can build your reputation. We can also serve as your advocate and lobbyist, help with marketing, introduce you to a wealth of new customers and keep you informed about issues that affect your business.

For the next 30 days, I challenge all members to be aware of who you’re regularly doing business with … are they Chamber members? If they are, please tell them thank you for their investment in the Chamber. How can you tell? Look for their membership window cling outside the business, their online e-plaque on their website, or utilize our online membership directory at

www.SiouxFallsChamber.com. Each issue of Chamber News also contains lists of new members, members commemorating anniversary milestones and celebrating ribbon cuttings.

If you know a business that is not yet a member, let us know and we’ll send a volunteer or staff member over to talk to them about the many benefits of supporting the community’s progress along with their own progress.

The Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) saw significant gains in followers across all mediums of social media in 2012. Marketing of Sioux Falls is promoted through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Each social media platform is used to target different demographics who have the potential to visit Sioux Falls.

Facebook saw a gain of 4,176 likes, a 324 percent increase over 2011; Twitter followers increased 39 percent and YouTube video views doubled. In the spring 2012, the

CVB launched a LinkedIn page followed by a Sioux Falls Pinterest account in late summer. LinkedIn saw 40 new followers in 2012 and Pinterest gained 111 new followers. A Google+ account has been set up in recent weeks.

The CVB continues to use each social platform to promote events, lodging, and things to do in Sioux Falls. Want to stay connected and follow Sioux Falls on social media? Go to VisitSiouxFalls.com and scroll to the social media links on the main page.

Are your employees experts on Sioux Falls?

The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is offering employees of Sioux Falls businesses an opportunity to learn all about what the city has to offer visitors. The CVB’s annual Inner-City FAM (Familiarization) Tours will be held May 8-9. Two half-day tours and one full-day tour will be available.

Employees of all Sioux Falls businesses are encouraged to attend. The goal is for

employees to become the “experts” on what there is to see and do, places to stay, where to eat, and how easy it is to get around Sioux Falls. When visitors ask a question, informed employees need to give the best answer to assist the visitor at that time and to encourage them to return for another visit.

More information will be available soon or contact Rachel at the CVB at (605) 373-2026 or rcrane@siouxfalls.com.

Forward Sioux Falls celebrates

Twenty-five years ago, community leaders recognized the need to aggressively promote Sioux Falls as a great place to do business. The economy was rocky and community leaders asked: what must be done today to ensure Sioux Falls’ vitality tomorrow?

The answer was Forward Sioux Falls, a new economic development and marketing program to promote continued growth in the Sioux Falls area. Fundraising started in 1987 and the first program kicked off in January 1988. Since then, five successful Forward Sioux Falls programs have accelerated the community’s economic expansion.

Forward Sioux Falls is about more than investing dollars. It brings the broader community together behind a defined set of goals to shape the future. Investors represent all parts of the community — businesses large and small, government entities and individuals.

Forward Sioux Falls is the proven and successful joint venture economic development partnership between the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation. More than $37.5 million has been raised to enhance

economic development efforts and improve the quality of life.

The Sioux Falls area has changed tremendously since that first campaign — more jobs, expanding superior medical facilities, dozens of educational opportunities and better shopping and cultural activities. Forward Sioux Falls can’t take all of the credit for the community’s successes. However, the program has been instrumental in bringing the right people together and creating the right environment to allow for growth and progress in the region.

While specific components of the Forward Sioux Falls programs have changed over the years, investors continue to favor program initiatives that are aggressive in attracting new business, expansion of existing

businesses, increasing job growth and enhancing the overall quality of life.

Sioux Falls is the thriving community it is because of the vision and the investment made by community leaders beginning 25 years ago and in each subsequent Forward Sioux Falls program.

Later this month, investors will gather to celebrate accomplishments from the past 25 years. For more information about the 25th Anniversary celebration or to find out how you can become an investor, visit www. forwardsiouxfalls.com or contact Director of Investor Relations Carolyn Winchell at (605) 373-2008 or cwinchell@siouxfalls.com.

Forward Sioux Falls program highlights

The first Forward Sioux Falls program was a bold initiative to create new jobs and stimulate capital investment in the Sioux Falls area. Sioux Falls was facing increased economic competition from major cities across the country. FSF was designed to propel Sioux Falls’ record of growth and development into the 1990s. The program is renewed every four to five years, continuing to emphasize major areas like quality of life, advocacy, technology and research development, affordable housing, workforce development, existing business retention and expansion, new business development and investor communication. Following are just some of the major highlights and success stories from the last 25 years of Forward Sioux Falls programs:

SOUTH DAKOTA TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS CENTER

In January 2004, the South Dakota Technology Business Center (SDTBC) opened for business. The SDTBC is a 501(c)(4) notfor-profit corporation whose mission is to diversify and expand the regional economy by providing nationally-recognized “best of class” entrepreneurial support services, networking opportunities and facilities to earlystage technology-based businesses and other technology companies expanding or relocating to South Dakota. The SDTBC building is a 45,000 sq. ft. facility offering office and lab space for lease. Tenants are encouraged

to “graduate” from the facility in five years. FSF V capitalized on the success of the South Dakota Technology Business Center (part of FSF IV) and FSF continues to support expansion and growth of high technology and high growth entrepreneurs commercializing new products and services with innovative entrepreneurial programs and flexible space. Since its opening, the SDTBC has graduated 15 companies. In its first eight years (numbers are currently being compiled for 2012),SDTBC clients and graduates have created 387 net new jobs with combined payrolls exceeding $31 million.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The Sioux Empire Housing Partnership was established to facilitate and promote affordable housing for work force development. Since that time, SEHP has been successful in accomplishing its mission through down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, homebuyer education, the Lacey Park subdivision with 57 affordable homes being developed, neighborhood revitalization, the Valley Green development with 49 affordable homes being developed, the Menlo condominiums, the Hayward Meadows development with the potential for 76 new affordable homes, lease purchase program of governor’s houses, housing resource centers and working with immigrant housing. The SEHP’s mission deals specifically with serving individuals who are

80 percent on or below the area median income. The SEHP consists of representatives from business, local government and community groups.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Forward Sioux Falls has funded research and participated in planning projects that improve the quality of life of the region. Many of those early planning processes are starting to payoff. For example, the Riverfront Greenway is taking shape along the Big Sioux River downtown and the Good Earth State Park at Blood Run site is proposed to become South Dakota’s newest State Park. The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center is now under construction, fulfilling a decade-long priority of enhancing public facilities and providing more opportunities for events and conventions to come to Sioux Falls. The leadership of the Chamber, Development Foundation and Forward Sioux Falls were involved and provided leadership and funding to assist the City of Sioux Falls in achieving voter approval of this important project.

EXPANDING & ENHANCING THE WORKFORCE

A report analyzing the impact of FSF, completed by Dr. Ralph Brown during the third program, showed that 45,000 jobs created from 1987-99 can be attributed to the Forward Sioux Falls program. In addition to helping create jobs, Forward Sioux Falls has also emphasized expanding the types of jobs offered. Sioux Falls has a diversified economy and FSF has worked to create more higher-

wage jobs by targeting businesses in industries that would benefit by being located in Sioux Falls.

In the first five programs, Forward Sioux Falls partnered with 38 businesses offering 135 internships and awarded $67,500 in scholarships through the Interns in Industry program. The Shadow ED program coordinated more than 1,650 job shadow experiences with area businesses and high school students.

SELLING SIOUX FALLS

Forward Sioux Falls helped establish the web presence for organizations that sell Sioux Falls, namely the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau. The website SiouxFalls.com went online in 2000 as another way to share information about the community. Since that time, each organization has developed its own site with information specific to its audience, with SiouxFalls.com serving as a referral site with information and links about the community. The 2011-2016 FSF program is also aggressively promoting Sioux Falls through regional and national public relations efforts.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The Forward Sioux Falls program will continue to adapt with the changing community needs. It’s likely that continuing to expand the economy, promoting a strong workforce and business climate and advocating for business will continue to remain top priorities, with investors being able to set the agenda.

Register now for Crossroads Summit

YPN conference to bring generations together to network, learn

You have read about multiple generations now working together, but are you paying attending to how generations are learning from one another? Even if you work differently, applying the basics of building and maintaining relationships is key to the growth of any business. And, making sure that your office environment is a place where you can expect to be challenged and happy is key.

Attend the 2013 Crossroads Summit, hosted by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network. The Crossroads Summit, a one-day, personal and professional development conference, is designed to teach you about the basics: networking, learning, collaboration and team work.

The day will start off with breakfast and a keynote pre sentation from Talent Anarchy. This dynamic duo will remind you that it is not what you know but who you know that matters. Their presentation, “Social Gravity: Harnessing the Natural Laws of Relationships,” will help you discover the science behind how and why relationships form between people and allow you to gain an understanding of the value that exists with these relationships called social capital. Jason Lauritsen and Joe Gerstandt will leave you with the knowledge and tools you need to grow a powerful network of relationships to fuel your personal and professional success. The cost is $25 per person, which includes breakfast, and is open to the public.

The lunch presentation features Jenn Lim. Lim is the CEO and Chief Happiness Officer of Delivering Happiness, a company she and Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com, created to inspire happiness in work, com munity and everyday life. In 2005, Lim created the first culture book for Zappos.com and continues to produce one each year. Lim is dedicated to showing how people can make the world a happier place through the decisions and actions. The luncheon is open to the public and costs $35 per person, which includes lunch.

For $99, you can take part in a series of breakout sessions throughout the morning and afternoon in addition to the two dynamic keynote presentations. You will learn from local business leaders, have the chance to share ideas and network with professionals from across our community.

Entrepreneurs can take advantage of two South Dakota Technology Business Center programs to help fast‐track starting and growing their businesses in 2013 — the Business Launch Boot Camp and the SDTBC Accelerator.

The Business Launch Boot Camp, to be held May 21-23, will help companies develop their business concept and launch quickly with a focus on generating sales. Applications for the Boot Camp are due Friday, March 29, and candidates selected to participate will be notified by Friday, April 30. A select group of Boot Camp participants will be offered additional incubation support and the opportunity to participate in the SDTBC Accelerator.

“The SDTBC Accelerator program provided us with actionable business tools and resources that helped us look at our company in a different way,” said 2012 Accelerator participant Shane Thomas, co‐founder of BEgiNR Media. “The program also introduced us to experts in various fields that proved to be helpful with topics such as financial planning, legal advice, and start‐up capital.”

The SDTBC Accelerator is a series of monthly, one‐day sessions held for six months, starting on June 27. The Accelerator will help entrepreneurs refine their business concept and model, focus on sales growth,

and scale their company. The application deadline for the Accelerator is Friday, May 3, and the selected participants will be notified by Friday, May 31. Winning candidates can earn up to $1,000 in incentives as well as part of a $20,000 funding pool and other in‐kind services.

“Helping launch and grow new technology‐related businesses is core to our mission at the Technology Business Center,” said Pam Boehm, who manages the Center’s programs. “Through the Business Launch Boot Camp and Accelerator entrepreneurs learn from and connect with accountants, business attorneys, IP attorneys, finance experts, management experts and investors. At the end of each program they have defined and refined their business and are better positioned to achieve success.”

The 2013 Business Launch Boot Camp and Accelerator programs are sponsored by Forward Sioux Falls 2011‐16 and South Dakota EPSCoR. EPSCoR is the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research that is funded by the National Science Foundation). For more information about the Boot Camp and Accelerator or to apply visit www. sdtbc.com/accelerator or contact Pam Boehm at (605) 275‐8008.

We’re Moving! Chamber, CVB office suites renovations enhance first impressions

The major construction project taking place at the Commerce Center will take giant steps in March.

Later this month, the entire Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce staff will move to the second floor of the building. Previously, staff was located in Suites 102 and 303. After the Chamber staff moves, the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau staff, which will remain in Suite 102, and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation staff, which will remain in Suite 101, will temporarily relocate to other suites in the building so work can progress in their respective spaces.

The Commerce Center has been home to the Chamber of Commerce, Development Foundation and CVB since it was built in 1992. To keep pace with the growth of the area as well as planned growth for the respective organizations, the move is an opportunity to organize and structure the work space for the greatest benefit of Chamber members, investors, volunteer leaders and

staff to provide a positive impression about Sioux Falls to business prospects, visitors and residents alike.

Due to a significant change to the phone systems and the moving of network infrastructure, members may notice a disruption to either phone or email service this month. Email communications are scheduled to be down from Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. until Monday, March 11 at 8 a.m. Phone systems are scheduled to be down on Friday, March 15 at noon until Monday, March 18 at 8 a.m. Additionally, individual direct dial extensions will be unavailable until later in the week, though these can be reached by calling the main numbers: the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is (605) 336-1620 and the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau’s new number is (605) 275-6060. As with any construction project, all dates are subject to change.

The Chamber and CVB staff will work to keep everyone updated via social media sites: Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Com-

merce and Visit Sioux Falls on Facebook; and @SFAreaChamber and @VisitSiouxFalls on Twitter.

Some of the benefits of the move: it more than doubles the size of the current conference room to 1,600 sq. ft., which creates opportunities to host Chamber meetings and events onsite, saving money and bringing people in more contact with the Chamber. There will also be additional conference space for smaller collaborations and the new space brings improvements in technology. Additional enhancements to the building’s exterior and interior common spaces will be completed by The Dunham Company, the building’s owner; this also includes creating additional visitor parking spaces.

There will be no Business Improvement District funds used for the remodel. Later this year, an open house will be held for Chamber members and the visitor industry to see the finished work from all suites.

Sioux Falls to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day March 16

Sylvia Henkin to serve as Grand Marshal

Sylvia Henkin, the woman who brought St. Patrick’s Day communitywide celebrations to Sioux Falls 34 years ago, will be the Grand Marshal of the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 16.

The day’s events are officially kicked off at 11:45 a.m. with the traditional Painting of the Shamrock at 9th Street and Phillips Avenue. The parade forms at 5th Street and Main Avenue at 12:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 2 p.m.

This year will mark Henkin’s sec ond turn at the helm of the parade. She was Grand marshal in 1989 and the St. Patrick’s Day Extrav aganza Committee voted to honor her again because she is hanging up her shil lelagh as chair. She will be succeeded by Shawn Cleary, president of Tiger Corpora tion, manufacturer of roadside mowers and other equipment, and president of the Sioux Falls Irish Club.

In her autobiography, “Sylvia: A Life in Three Acts,” Henkin recalls that she frequently watched the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City while there attending meetings of the national YWCA board.

“On Feb. 11, 1979, I gathered a group of gentlemen – go-getters with a sense of fun – in my kitchen,” Henkin wrote. “In one month, we organized a parade.” She has been chair since.

Henkin, 91, recently received the Spirit of Sioux Falls award from the Sioux Falls Development Foundation and a downtown landmark was re-named the Sylvia R. Henkin State Theater in her honor. She has been an active businesswoman and community volunteer.

The parade on March 16 provides an excellent opportunity for people throughout the Sioux Falls region to visit the city for a day of family activities. In 2009, the St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza committee, which plans the parade with support from the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce staff, decided to move the parade permanently to the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day.

Sponsorships from Sanford Health, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Holiday Inn City Centre, Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation and Xcel Energy help underwrite the costs of bringing the Khartum Temple Pipes and Drums, a Shriner unit from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have performed in the parade almost since the start and make guest appearances in local schools and hospitals.

The “Vanguard Squadron,” an ethanolpowered stunt team performing in-formation aerobatics again will perform during the parade, weather permitting. It is sponsored by POET, a South Dakota ethanol producer.

urday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater featuring Mike Connor and Friends. Miss Shamrock also will be crowned at the concert. The Irish Club and Lary Etten Productions sponsor the green lighting on the falls at Falls Park on March 15 and March 16.

There is no entry fee to participate in the parade. The only requirement is that each participant in the parade 16 and older must purchase and wear an official St. Patrick’s Day Parade button costing $3. The proceeds help cover parade costs and a portion is donated to Special Olympics. Buttons are available at the Chamber of Commerce

office at 200 N. Phillips Ave., at various businesses and at the start of the parade.

No candy can be distributed. Sioux Falls City Council Ordinance (Section 38143) states: “It is unlawful for any person conducting, managing or participating in any parade to distribute or permit the distribution of any candy or balloons to persons in attendance during the parade.”
