Our progress today will pay dividends long into the future
The old movie line, “if you build it, they will come,” doesn’t seem to apply to Sioux Falls. For a number of sports user groups in Sioux Falls, it’s moved past whether there is a need — now it’s a matter of getting it done, which they’re doing in full-force.
The future is created through strong partnerships. This issue of Chamber News highlights the community’s support of several new facilities that are being funded through publicprivate partnerships. It’s a win-win for our visitors and for organizations like the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sioux Falls Sports Authority, enhancing their ability to sell Sioux Falls as a sports town. Even more importantly, those of us who live and work here can take advantage of these new facilities, too.
The future is created through strong partnerships.
Many visitors to the Summit League basketball tournaments had never even heard of or been to Sioux Falls. But now the Summit League tournament epitomizes the success our community can have when we work together for the greater good of all. I have a lot of pride being able to see Sioux Falls broadcast coverage on national television and know that our organizers and volunteers really help our community shine behind the scenes, too.
The good news in development also extends to tax revenue and residential and commercial construction.
Home sales in Sioux Falls were up almost 20 percent last year. The average sales price was up 8 percent compared to 2011. Both Minnehaha and Lincoln counties have reported increases in their revenue. The City of Sioux Falls reports that 2012 construction value was 68 percent higher than the previous year — and that doesn’t include the bulk of the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center construction costs.
In a way, Sioux Falls is catching up — and defying the national economy. Our community’s progressive attitude will pay dividends in the years to come.

We have a large number of user groups for the new sports facilities and we’ll now be able to grow the participation in those sports as well as expand the sport opportunities for athletes and users at all athletic levels.
I commend the business community and city of Sioux Falls for supporting these projects and look forward to hearing what’s next.

Several Sioux Falls hotels recently collected 2,000 pounds of used hotel soap that will be combined with another 6,000 pounds of used soap to remake more than 32,000 new soap bars and shipped to underserved countries around the world.
In the past two years, Watertown High School senior Maren Johnson has created a
network of more than 130 hotels in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and two Canadian provinces and is the Global Soap Project’s only student ambassador. Johnson’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 100,000 bars of new soap.

New cycling event to promote health, fitness
Argus Leader Media and the City of Sioux Falls are partnering to celebrate a weekend of cycling, wellness and fitness as part of the Living Well Sioux Falls initiative. Tour Sioux Falls will take place June 29-30 with two different ways to experience bicycling and active living in Sioux Falls.
On Saturday, June 29, participants in Tour Sioux Falls will enjoy the fully-opened Sioux Falls bike trail. There will be activities for families and kids at several of the parks along the trail; riders can get off their bikes, stretch their legs, get something to eat or drink and chat with their neighbors and local organizations about fitness and wellness opportunities throughout the Sioux Falls area. Saturday’s activities will culminate in a party on the River Greenway with music, food and activities.
On Sunday, June 30, Sioux Falls will host its first-ever cyclovia – one of the first small cities in the country to do so. Cyclovia is a Spanish word meaning to open city
streets to bicycles. The Tour Sioux Falls Sunday Cyclovia is a version of an event that originated in Bogota, Columbia. Today in Bogota, the city closes down 70 miles of roadway to cars every Sunday for people to walk, bike, talk, exercise, picnic and play in the streets. These “open streets” events have gained traction all over the world, including many cities throughout the U.S. such as Tuscon, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and here in the Midwest in Madison, Wis.
A portion of downtown will be closed to motor traffic on the morning of June 30. The 2.6-mile cyclovia route will begin at Falls Park and travel south Phillips Avenue to 8th Street, west to Main Avenue, south on Main Avenue to 13th Street, east to Phillips Avenue and back to Falls Park. The cyclovia will take place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Other sponsors of the event include Sanford Health, Billion Automotive and Scheels.

SELLING SIOUX FALLS AS A SPORTS CITY
Sports events in Sioux Falls have long been a major attribute to economic development in the community. Thousands of people from across the U.S. can be drawn to any one event at a time, generating millions of dollars in economic impact. Two organizations have proven successful in selling Sioux Falls as a sports city.
The Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) sells Sioux Falls to all markets and provides visitor services to increase visitor spending in order to enhance the economic benefit to the city. The bureau is funded through hotel room tax revenue and a BID (Business Improvement District) tax on room nights.
Since 1984, the CVB has worked with numerous local sports organizations, including: the Sioux Falls People for Youth, Dakota Alliance Soccer Club, Sioux Empire Baseball Association, Sioux Falls Midwest Wrestling, Sioux Falls Tennis Association, Sioux Valley Cycle Club, Dakota Spirit, South Dakota Golf Association, Sioux Falls Snow Fox Swim Team, Sioux Falls Cygnets and many others.
The CVB has a full-time sports market sales manager, Blaine Davis, who works with local sports organizations to attract new state, regional, national and international sports events to Sioux Falls. Davis attends national sports tradeshows and various sales blitzes to produce new business from groups that host events across the country. The CVB will assist in contacting various organizations for event requirements, review and evaluate, gather accommodation bids from Sioux Falls hotels and facilities, assemble sales packets and assist in sales presentations to the selection committee.
In 2006, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority (SFSA) was formed by community leaders to recruit major sporting events to the Sioux Falls area. The organization attracts international, national, regional and state sporting events by operating, leasing, enhancing or owning sports facilities in the Sioux Falls area. It is run by a board of directors composed of 15 community members,

an executive director and project director.
The Sports Authority is an active member of the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC).
The SFSA’s first significant event, with bidding assistance from the Sioux Falls CVB, was the Summit League Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. The 2009 Summit League Tournament games were the first time ESPN broadcasted a “Live-Nationally Televised” event in Sioux Falls and South Dakota.
The 2010, 2011 and 2012 Summit League tournaments were overwhelming successes in terms of sponsorship support from the Sioux Falls business community and attendance (see sidebar regarding the Summit League tournament). In 2012, the SDSU Women and the SDSU Men went on to the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
Sioux Falls has also hosted additional tournaments: the Summit League’s Track and Field Championships in 2011 at the University of Sioux Falls – Sanford Sports Athletic Complex and the 2011 Summit
League Baseball Tournament at the Sioux Falls Baseball Stadium, where an all-time attendance record was set.
The Sioux Falls Sports Authority also organizes the annual Sioux Falls Marathon, which will return for a fourth time on Sept. 8, 2013. It is held in conjunction with the Sioux Falls Half-Marathon & Miracle 5K presented by Sanford Health. In 2012, 382 runners participated.
Wes Hall is the new executive director of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, replacing Mike Sullivan, who retired in December 2012 after joining the then newly formed organization in 2008. For the past six years, Hall served as the assistant director for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state of Iowa that is the oldest, largest and longest recreational bicycle touring event in the world. He was also the tour coordinator for Bike Virginia, another bicycle touring event, from 200307.
“The city of Sioux Falls is quickly turn-
ing into one of the top sporting hubs in the Midwest,” Hall said. “This is an incredible opportunity to become part of a community so hungry for the entertainment options sports can provide.”
According to research from the CVB, the sports market has the biggest share for the type of events hosted in Sioux Falls. From 2005-12, sports events booked and scheduled through the CVB have generated approximately 217 events, 528,645 people and more than $113 million in estimated economic impact. Major events such as the ASA National Softball Tournaments and U.S. Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Soccer Tournament have a large effect on the variance from year to year.
New facilities under construction will help both organizations sell Sioux Falls as a sporting destination. New year-round opportunities to book events will arise with more available space at the new facilities, but specifically during the months of November-March, a traditionally slower time of year for hotels.
New facilities will help Sioux Falls expand its hosting capabilities, which already include sports events such as tennis, baseball and soccer.
Summit League Tourney to remain in Sioux Falls
The Sioux Falls Arena will host The Summit League Championships for two more seasons before the event moves into the new 12,000-seat Denny Sanford Events Center in 2015. In October 2012, the Summit League and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority announced a long-term agreement that will keep The Summit League Basketball Championships in Sioux Falls through 2017 with an option for five additional years that would keep the league’s premier event in Sioux Falls from 2018-22.
The 2013 Summit League Basketball Championships will be held March 9-12. The Sioux Falls Sports Authority estimates that the Summit League Tournament has an annual $2 million economic impact with immeasurable benefits due to the me-
dia exposure to national markets.
“This long-term agreement is a testament to the great support that the community of Sioux Falls has shown for our marquee event,” said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple. “It also speaks to the outstanding support from all our tournament sponsors and the professionalism of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and its volunteers. The efforts of those groups have been instrumental in creating an incredible event for our league.”
“Six years ago, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority set our sights on bringing national and international sporting events to Sioux Falls. The Summit League basketball tournament delivered on that promise,” said Kevin Lampe, Chair of the Sioux Falls
Sports Authority Board of Directors. “With this event comes national television and media exposure for our great community that will reach millions of sports fans across the nation for the next five years.”
The Summit League has held its marquee event in Sioux Falls since 2009 and attendance records have been set in each of the four years at the site. The top four total attendance figures, which combine the men’s and women’s tournament totals, have all been achieved in Sioux Falls. The 2012 Summit League Basketball Championships drew 40,269 spectators, topping the previous record, set in 2009, by nearly 6,000.
Since moving to Sioux Falls in 2009, The Summit League Basketball Championships have set marks for tickets sales
and corporate sponsorships and provided unprecedented television coverage. In all four years, every men’s and women’s game has been televised live, including the men’s championship games on ESPN2 and women’s title games on ESPNU. The 2009 championship games marked the first time that sporting events originating from South Dakota were televised live to a national audience.
The 2013 Championships mark the second consecutive year that all 14 games will air on national cable television. Fox College Sports returns to air the men’s and women’s quarterfinals and semifinals while the ESPN family of networks will broadcast the championship games.

Unused frequent flyer miles can benefit Make-A-Wish
A statewide campaign for unused frequent flier miles will help make wishes come true for South Dakota kids with life-threatening medical conditions. Last year’s inaugural campaign raised 2.3 million miles, saving Make-A-Wish® South Dakota more than $30,000 in airfare. More than 65 percent of the wishes granted by Make-AWish require air travel, the largest expense of the chapter’s annual wish budget. Miles from Delta, United, and US Airways are accepted.
“Donating unused frequent flier miles is a unique way to help make wishes come true,” Paul Krueger, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish South Dakota said. “Once donated, the miles never expire and they go directly to sending our wish kids and their families on their travel wishes.”
Krueger said they are granting a significant number of travel wishes. Trips include the wish child, his or her parents or guardians and immediate siblings living at home. He said the average number of travelers is around five, but they have sent families as large as eight to 10 people in the last year. Watch KSFY Feb. 28 for more information. Miles will be accepted that day by calling 1 (800) 640-9198. Airline miles can be donated online anytime at www.southdakota.wish.org. A minimum donation of 1,000 miles is required and you need to know exactly how many miles you would like to donate. The statewide effort is made possible by KSFY, NewsCenter1, Midco Connections, and Midcontinent Communications.

2013 Sioux Empire Farm Show a success
Livestock entries were up as were dollars raised for market livestock exhibitors at the 60th Annual Sioux Empire Farm Show, sponsored by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. The Farm Show brought an estimated 30,000 people to Sioux Falls Jan. 22-26 for purebred cattle shows and sales, market livestock shows and commercial exhibits.
Entries were up for most livestock shows compared to 2012. The Sioux Empire Farm Show has an estimated economic impact of $3.9 million on the community.
Market livestock exhibitors competing at the Mayor’s Round-Up & Sale of
estimated $58,000 paid to market livestock producers is more than what was paid out in 2012. More than 350 attended the 2013 Mayor’s Round-Up & Sale of Champions dinner and approximately 70 Sioux Falls area businesses bid on the livestock.
Also at the dinner, the Chamber recognized the Jim and Jan Willard and Roger and Sherri Willard family of Colton as the Farm Family of the Year and Joel Westra, Westra Atkins Auctioneers, as the Agri-Business Citizen of the Year. The Tri-State Neighbor, Wells Fargo Bank and Campbell Supply Co. sponsored the $12,000 Supreme Row purse, which awards a grand champion over

Champions came from South Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas. The annual event is the culmination of the market livestock shown during the Sioux Empire Farm Show, with the 25 market animals “auctioned off”: the top five steers, top 10 swine, top five sheep and top five goats shown at the Sioux Empire Farm Show. Buyers aren’t actually purchasing the animals but paying premiums to the producers. The Sioux Empire Farm Show is the only regional farm show to pay out 100 percent of the funds raised at the auction. The tally is still being confirmed, but the
all breeds and splits the purse between the exhibitor and the buyer.
The Sioux Empire Farm Show is organized and managed by the Chamber’s Agri-Business Division. More than 200 volunteers help with the show. Larry Healy, Campbell Supply Co., chaired the 2013 show. The 61st Sioux Empire Farm Show will be held Jan. 21-25, 2014. For more information about specific show and sale results, visit www.siouxempirefarmshow.org.

Sioux Falls to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day March 16
The 34th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held in downtown Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 16. The traditional reading of the proclamations and Painting of the Shamrock will take place at 9th Street and Phillips Avenue at 11:45 a.m. to officially kick off the day’s events. The parade will begin at 2 p.m.
The parade forms at 5th Street and Main Avenue beginning at 12:30 p.m. Vehicles will be lined up on a first-come, first served basis, and is at the discretion of parade officials and will proceed through the downtown area, starting at 6th Street and Main Avenue.
There is no entry fee to participate in the parade. The only requirement is that each adult (age 16 and older) participating in the parade must purchase and wear an official St. Patrick’s Day Parade button. The cost is $3 per button, the proceeds of which help cover the costs of the parade and support Special Olympics. Buttons are available in advance at the Chamber of Commerce office (200 N. Phillips Ave., Suite 102) numerous businesses throughout the community and from Special Olympics volunteers. They can also be purchased the day of the parade at the start of the parade. Since 1982, more than $125,000 has been raised for Special Olympics.
In addition to the parade, the luck of the Irish will be celebrated for several days with performances by the Khartum Pipe and Drum. This group will be making appearances at numerous places throughout the community in the days leading up to the parade.
Per Sioux Falls City Council Ordinance (Section 38-143), absolutely no candy can be distributed: “It is unlawful for any person conducting, managing or participating in any parade to distribute or permit the distribution of any candy or balloons to persons in attendance during the parade.”
In 2009, the St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza committee, which plans the parade with support from Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce staff, decided to move the parade permanently to the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. The decision was made in order to better accommodate visitors who come to Sioux Falls to celebrate the holiday. Each year the parade is led by a Grand Marshal, who is determined by the St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza committee. That person will be announced in the coming weeks. St. Patrick’s Day Parade founder Sylvia Henkin is hanging up her shillelagh but will continue as Chair Emeritus. Long-time committee member Shawn Cleary, Tiger Corp., is the new committee chair.
