tudents and families can visit with representatives from nearly 70 colleges during the Tri-State Area College Fair, Sunday, April 15 from 1-3 p.m. at the Delta Hotel Center (formerly Marina Center), 385 E. Fourth St., South Sioux City.

This free event is sponsored by EducationQuest Foundation, Siouxland Area High School Counselors and Northwest Area Education Agency.

The college fair is especially important for high school juniors who should narrow their college choices before applying for financial aid and college admission early in the fall.

The fair will also help seniors finalize their college decision, and sophomores start their college search process.

Students should follow

these tips to help them make the most of their college fair visit: Before attending, register for a barcode at NebraskaCollegeFairs. org. Print the barcode, or download it to your smartphone, and take it to the fair so college reps can scan it.

Determine which colleges you want to visit (a list of participating colleges is available in the College Fair article at EducationQuest.org).

Prepare a list of questions to ask the college representatives. Ask about deadlines to apply for admission, scholarships, and financial aid.

Choices abound for students at Chadron State

‌C

hadron State College, which was founded in 1911, is the only fouryear, regionally-accredited college in the western half of Nebraska.

As a public institution with its roots in teacher education, Chadron State takes pride in its accessibility and affordability.

Nearly 3,000 undergraduate, graduate and online students currently attend Chadron State and its curriculum has grown to offer programs and courses in 52 majors and endorsements and eight master’s degree programs.

Cultural opportunities abound in student productions and the Galaxy Series, a fine arts program that offers exhibits, concerts and presentations by nationally known performers, artists and experts. Chadron State students cheer on the Ea-

gles, who compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II. The college is open admission, meaning applications for admission are accepted from anyone who has graduated from high school or received an equivalent diploma.

Rising 58 feet in the air and just 25 yards from Highway 10 on the west edge of campus, the new $24.5 million health and natural sciences center can’t be missed.

St. Luke’s College continues growth in health care education

‌S

t. Luke’s College, located in Sioux City, Iowa, has been committed to educating knowledgeable, competent, and compassionate health care professionals for over a century. The college has nearly 3,000 alumni employed in a variety of health care professions in the Siouxland community and throughout the nation.

Since 2013, St. Luke’s College has increased its student body by 57 percent, with a 76 percent increase in minority students. These numbers reflect a growing interest in health care professions.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in healthcare occupations is expected to grow 18 percent by the year 2026, adding 2.4 million new jobs.

Criteria for earning scholarships can include academics, community service, leadership, or talents. Therefore, to qualify for more scholarships, earn good grades, get involved, and complete the FAFSA. The benefits of applying for scholarships could be enormous. If you spend 20 hours applying for 20 scholarships and receive $2,000 in awards, you just made $100 an hour!

Follow these tips to increase your chances of earning scholarships: Organize scholarships in deadline order and set

aside time each week to work on them.

The application may ask for your activities, awards, honors classes and volunteer or paid jobs. Track this information by using the Activities Resume at EducationQuest.org.

When requesting a letter of recommendation, give the person a specific deadline and a list of your accomplishments and activities or Activities Resume.

After writing an essay, ask an adult (preferably an English teacher) to review it. You may be able to reuse much of the essay for multiple scholarships.

Carefully follow the directions on the application or your application may be disqualified.

he Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application for federal, state, and college-specific financial aid.

Follow these steps to apply: 1. Create an FSA ID. Both you and a parent must each create a username and password at fsaid.ed.gov that will serve as your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID for the FAFSA, IRS Data Retrieval, and to apply for student loans. Have your FSA IDs with you when it’s time to start your FAFSA; otherwise keep them in a secure place and remember where to find them as you’ll need them for future use.

2. Complete the FAFSA. Complete the FAFSA at fafsa.gov after Oct. 1 of your senior year and every year you’re in college. You’ll include student and parent income tax information on

the form and can access it via IRS Data Retrieval.

The FAFSA will guide you through that process.

3. Expect a Student Aid Report (SAR).

The SAR acknowledges your FAFSA was received and will inform you if you need to take further action.

This might include a request from the college to verify your FAFSA information. If so, send required documents to the college financial aid office.

4. Expect financial aid award notifications.

The colleges you listed on your FAFSA will provide you with a financial aid award notification detailing the assistance they’re offering.

This might include a combination of scholarships, grants, work-study, and student loans.

5. Compare and accept award notifications.

Forslin ‘lives to deliver’ thanks to Iowa Lakes ‌ W hen he was 4 years old, Jeremy Forslin knew he wanted to fly, but it was the Iowa Lakes Community College aviation program in Estherville that gave him his wings.

Now a FedEx Boeing 777 first officer, Forslin boarded an airplane for the first time as a small child, heading to Colorado to visit his grandparents. On that trip, not only did the Minnesota boy get to fly on a plane, but his grandfather, a chief inspector mechanic for United Airlines, gave him an inside look at the industry.

“He would take me each Sunday to see the big planes up close,” Forslin said.

FAFSA opens Oct. 1

‌I

f you’re going to college during the 2018-19 academic year, you can complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning Oct. 1, 2017 using 2016 income tax data.

Before starting the FAFSA, create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) at fsaid.ed.gov. If you are considered dependent, a parent must also create an FSA ID. The IDs are needed to access the FAFSA and other Federal Student Aid websites, and will serve as signatures for the FAFSA. Colleges will use the results of the FAFSA to determine how much they will award in financial aid. This could be a combination of scholarships, grants, work-study, and student loans.

Taking flight

“I knew I wanted to fly, but I had to pay for my own schooling,” said Forslin. “A great aviation program on a budget was my target, and my high school counselor suggested Iowa Lakes.”

Forslin graduated from Iowa Lakes in 1996. He earned his bachelor’s degree and returned to the college as a flight instructor.

After that, he flew cargo and people in everything from charter jets to air ambulances, before he got the call from FedEx. Now married, Forslin is thrilled to be at FedEx, flying an international route, where this month he may see Germany, France and the United Arab Emirates.

“I’ll be gone 10 days, and then I’m done for the month,” said Forslin. “This was a hard job to get, and I feel very lucky.”

Flying blind

Forslin joined Iowa Lakes’ aviation program without even visiting the campus, based on the recommendation of his high school counselor.

“I signed up blind, and in hindsight, I could not have made a better decision,” Forslin said. “Throughout my career, I’ve met pilots who paid 20 times what I paid, and it gave them no advantage over me. All they gained was debt.”

Morningside College to offer major in agricultural education

‌M

orningside College will soon become the third college in Iowa to offer a major in agricultural education, preparing students to teach agriculture at the middle and high school levels. The major will be offered beginning in the fall.

Consultants at the Iowa Department of Education strongly encouraged Morningside to develop this program in response to a severe shortage of teachers in this area, said Dr. LuAnn Haase, chairwoman of the Sharon Walker School of Education at Morningside.

“Morningside College welcomes the opportunity to become a leader in the preparation of secondary agriculture teachers in the state of Iowa and in this region of our country,” Haase said. “Continued collaboration between Morningside College and its K-12 school district partners benefits students, agriculture-related businesses, and, ultimately, our economy as Morningside graduates help close the gap in this labor market need.”

Agricultural education has been a teacher shortage area in Iowa for 14 of the last 17 years, in South Dakota for the last nine years, and in Nebraska for three of the last four years.

At the same time, demand is growing, said Dr. Tom Paulsen, associate professor and chairman of the Regina Roth Applied Agricultural and Food Studies Program at Morningside.

“Schools are starting to understand that the agricultural sector, broadly defined, has tremendous career opportunities,” he said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects about 58,000 job openings per year for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture – and only about

That could explain the rapid growth of Morningside’s agricultural and food studies program. It has grown from about 10 students when it started in 2014 to almost 70 students four years later.

The program offers an overview of agriculture that is accessible even to students with limited experience in the field. Then students minor in specialties such as agribusiness, agronomy, environmental policy and law, food safety,

political science or mass communication.

Paulsen called education a logical growth area.

“We have an excellent education department here at Morningside College. Very well respected,” he said. “We’re partnering with that experience.”

Most agriculture programs can be found at large public universities. It is rare to find a small college with professors whose full-time job is to teach courses in agriculture, according to Paulsen. He said Morningside is a truly unique option

for students who want the small-college experience.

DeAndra Fritz will be one of the first agricultural education majors at Morningside. Her mother is actually an agricultural education professor at a large university, but she thought a small college like Morningside would be a better fit for her.

“I chose a small school rather than a big school because I learn better in a classroom that is not a lecture hall necessarily,” said the Morningside College sophomore. “I learn better

when the teacher is going to know my name and I can ask questions rather than a big university where there are 200 students in a class.”

There are five students in her first agriculture class at Morningside.

Even though Fritz’s mother is an agricultural education professor, there was no agricultural education program at her high school. She said her Morningside professors have been great about helping her get the experiences she needs to be successful.

For example, Paulsen

helped her get in touch with an area high school so she could watch FFA practices.

“Students wanting to come here for an ag education, know you’re going to get a lot of personal experience with your professors, and they’re going to know you,” she said. “They’re going to make sure you get the education you need in order to be successful.”
