Lowly, humble penny still bears picking up I found a penny on the sidewalk the other day and picked it up. Of course, the rhyme about “find a penny pick it up…all day long you’ll have good luck” played in my head as I stuffed it in my pocket. I could use some good luck but that penny was pretty much useless. You sure can’t buy much with a penny these days.

But back in that long ago time called the Fabulous Fifties a penny could buy something.

Terry Turner In my neighbortturner174@longlines.com hood in North Omaha we had a candy store. I seem to recall the candy dots that came on a length of paper were just a penny or maybe two. Plus if you put five pennies

together you get a Coke.

A couple of years ago my wife and I visited The World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. I was surprised to learn that when Coke was first introduced in 1886 the price for a serving (it wasn’t bottled yet) was a nickel. It took 70 years for the price to go up. Part of the problem was logistics. After Coke was available in its distinctive bottle the popular soft drink was available in vending machines and it sold for a nickel. In order to up the price to a dime (the next available coin) all the vending machines would have to be changed. Plus a dime would mean a 100 percent hike in cost and Coke didn’t think consumers would go for that. Back in 1953 the head of Coca-Cola actually wrote to his friend President Eisenhower and asked if he could authorize a 7-anda-half-cent coin to help solve the problem. It’s not known if Ike ever seriously considered doing that.

Glaucoma?

The study is evaluating an investigational treatment designed to reduce pressure buildup inside the eye, which may help reduce or eliminate the need for glaucoma medications.

Back then the lowly penny could actually buy something but now it’s barely worth the effort to bend over and pick one up. Not only does the penny not buy anything it costs more to make one than it’s actually worth.

Today the penny is made of 2.5 percent copper and the rest zinc. And it costs 2.41 cents to make a single penny. Its cousin in the money family the nickel now costs 11.18 cents to make.

Our friends in the frozen north, the Canadians are ditching the penny because like here it costs more to make than it’s worth. According to a story I read from one of the news services online the Royal Canadian Mint will stop distributing the penny this fall but consumers will still be able to use penny coins. The decision to stop making the penny was included in the country’s 2012 budget which called the penny a “burden to the economy.” And Canada is not the

only one getting rid of the one-cent coin. It seems Australia and New Zealand have also dumped the lowly penny. New Zealand went a step further and did away with its five-cent coin.

Many people in the United States and other countries feel the penny is more of a nuisance than a useful coin and retailers are not helping the problem. I meet some friends twice a week for coffee at a local grocery store. If I bring my own cup it costs $1.07. Why not $1.05 or $1.10 something that doesn’t involve pennies?

Many items in stores are priced so they appear cheaper. Retailers seem to think because something sells for $9.99 it looks cheaper than something for $10. I disagree. I don’t think consumers are quite that dumb.

I recently found some statistics about the lowly penny. Here they are:

A Railroad Museum-in-the-making!

For nearly a century, the Milwaukee Railroad Shops have been standing in a valley nestled between the Loess Hills Bluffs and the Big Sioux River along State Highway 12, Loess Hills National Scenic Byway. Located in the north Riverside area of Sioux City, the Milwaukee Railroad Shops are historically important as one of the nation’s largest surviving collections of buildings and structures associated with a steam locomotive servicing terminal and rail car repair facility.

The Milwaukee Railroad Shops were built in 1917 on sixty acres of land. The complex originally consisted of a 30-stall roundhouse with turntable, eighteen backshop buildings, a power plant, two water towers, a wood coal tower, and two sand towers. Today, the Milwaukee Railroad Shops cover 30 acres with a six-stall roundhouse, turntable, four backshop buildings, one wood sand tower and several foundation remnants.

The Milwaukee Railroad Shops were originally built to function as workplaces for railroad workers to repair and maintain the Milwaukee Road’s fleet of steam locomotives, freight cars, and passenger cars. During its peak years of operations in the 1920s and 1930s, over 500 craft and trades workers serviced and repaired approximately 850 steam locomotives a month and tens of thousands of rail cars a year.

The workers were employed in craft professions such as boiler makers, machinists, carpenters, pipefitters, steam fitters, and many other trades.

The railroad downsized the complex during the early 1950s when the railroad industry transitioned from steam locomotives to diesel engines. The railroad abandoned the shops in the 1980s and subsequently sold the complex to a local salvage operator. The Siouxland Historical Railroad Association bought the complex in 1996 and began its historic preservation work to transform the Milwaukee Railroad Shops into a railroad museum.

In converting the Milwaukee Railroad Shops to a railroad museum, the volunteer developers are preserving the features of the roundhouse and other structures to give visitors an understanding of what work went on in the buildings and why this site has historic significance.

The Milwaukee Railroad Shops are designated a historic district eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and are recognized as an official project of the Save America Treasures Program. The railroad shops are home to Sioux City’s iconic steam locomotive, Great Northern Railway No. 1355.

Penny: Still bears picking up from page 4 • About $600 worth of coins pass through the hands of a typical American each year.

• More than $10 billion in coins is sitting around in drawers, cans, bottles and bins in American homes. About 80 percent of adults say they save loose change rather than try to spend it.

• Another $13.5 billion in coins is in circulation.

• About 90 percent of people over 65 say they have never

thrown away a penny.

About half of all people between 18 and 34 say they have.

• It may take up to three seconds longer to complete a transaction that involves pennies.

So why do we still have pennies? Maybe it’s a government conspiracy to make us think we’ve got more money than we really do. I have to admit even though my wallet may be empty having change in my pocket is a good feeling.

The reality of what a penny can buy these days hit me after a quick search of the Internet revealed you can still buy those candy dots on strips of paper. Of course they’re no longer a penny or two for a sheet. Now you can get two sheets for $1.19 plus shipping.

Just one more reason why I long for the “Good Old Days.”

Billy Crystal writing book on aging NEW YORK | He has lived many, many Sundays.

Turning 65 next year doesn’t only mean more nap time for Billy Crystal. The actor and comedian is transforming the milestone into a book, and maybe even a stage show.

Crystal has an agreement with Henry Holt and Company for a book that will be part memoir, part meditation — with jokes — about getting older.

During a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press, Crystal said that he hoped to have it out around the time the big day arrives, March 14, 2013.

“There are 77 million of us baby boomers in the country and this book will speak to them and how we look at the world,” he said.

The book is currently untitled: “We have a dirty title, and a sincere title,” he explained. Crystal said he expects to work on it throughout the summer.

Retire? Sioux Cityan just getting started

SIOUX CITY | Phyllis Carter marched into her bank recently and asked about a loan. She wanted to start Stylistic Designs, a salon on Transit Avenue. The building she had in mind needed work.

The banker’s response: “Phyllis, you’re supposed to retire.”

Carter laughs about the tale while giving a visitor a tour of her new shop. She’s got six chairs ready and waiting. There’s also a new pedicure station in the back.

“I won’t retire,” she says. “I’ve always worked. Hair is my hobby.”

The first-time business owner is 73. She’s been cutting and styling hair since 1958.

She’s likely not alone. Three weeks ago, I featured Ira Garvis, a Spencer, Iowa, barber who has been at it 50 years. He’s 70 and going strong.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 10 percent of people in this age bracket were working or actively seeking employment in 1996. That, of course, was at least one recession and housing market crash ago.

Now? Government stats show nearly 20 percent of those age 70-74 are working or seeking work.

Carter’s reason for starting a business has nothing to do with a housing or a dot-com bubble burst.

She likes what she does, always has.

The Sergeant Bluff native graduated from high school in Sergeant Bluff in 1957. She attended beauty school in Sioux City and landed a job at Younkers in downtown Sioux City, working one of 38 chairs at the shop.

She did three perms her first day. It took all day.

She recalls making $30 to $40 per week.

“People from New York and California came in to train us,” she says. “I was there two years and then went two blocks to a shop in the Martin Building.”

She didn’t realize that was a no-no in the trade. Stylists weren’t to jump ship for another ship. It amounted to an informal non-compete clause.

“I actually had to leave there because of the proximity of the two businesses,” she says.

Carter headed to a shop in Morningside and ended up working

for years at Bellas Hess and then Salon Normandy. For the last 35 years, she’s worked in the beauty shop inside Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

“I had thoughts through the years of doing something on my own, but it never quite clicked,” says Carter, the mother of three.

She took the plunge and had her shop gutted over Memorial Day weekend.

She now has a number of pros renting chairs from her, including granddaughter Shelby Carter, 22.

Business ownership has benefits and drawbacks.

Carter pays into Social Security for herself, as employer, and her employees. She’s in a unique place, she laughs, as one who may also collect Social Security.

“I pay double and I did ask if I could collect double,” she says with a laugh. “It never hurts to ask.”

The 53-year veteran of this trade used to work early mornings, but has seen a trend toward later shifts.

When she asked her granddaugther to open at 9 a.m., she figured she was being nice by allowing her a later start time.

“It should be 10 a.m.,” the owner says, correcting herself. Customers more or less dictate the work schedule, and that’s OK. As far as work, Carter still doesn’t see it as such. This is all she’s wanted to do for more than a half-century. Better yet? It kept the bills paid and allowed her to raise a family.

“I told my kids to not think about the money part in their jobs,” she says. “You need to enjoy going to work.”

Siouxland Community Health Center offers home for comprehensive health care For 20 years, Siouxland Community Health Center (SCHC) has served the Siouxland community to provide quality and affordable health care services that are focused on improving access to care and meeting patient needs.

Responsive to the health center’s mission to be a patient-centered medical home that improves the physical, dental and behavioral health of the Siouxland community while eliminating access barriers, SCHC offers a number of services. Such services include a full range of medical care that features a patientcentered approach focused on the patient and provider relationship and improving health outcomes. Part of this approach is working with health care team members and the patient for setting goals and disease management. For older adults, services such as health education and chronic disease management are an

important part of maintaining and improving overall health. With these services, patients learn how to selfmanage conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as become more aware about things such as medication safety, especially those facing complex health conditions with multiple medications.

Currently, a team of 19 medical providers is on staff. This team is supported by other professionals including two clinical pharmacists, case managers and nursing staff. In addition to these staff, a number of providers within the community volunteer at the health center to bring specialty services such as cardiovascular care, surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry, ophthalmology, nephrology and orthopaedic care to patients. Other supports to medical care include on-site laboratory and radiology services, as well as a pharmacy to obtain prescription

medications. A co-located walk-in clinic is also offered to treat patients for minor illnesses and offers extended hours, including Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., to increase availability of services.

Other health care services include a dental clinic with four dental professionals and a team of assistants and hygienists. While providing a dental home to children is a priority, the SCHC dental clinic offers emergency care for adults on a walk-in basis twice daily. Behavioral health services include assessing patient needs, short-term mental health counseling, and linking patients to other services.

Currently, four master’s level social workers are on staff to offer these services.

In addition to these health care services, a number of additional services are also in place to enhance the patient-centered experience and address the needs of patients.

Bruening: Macular degeneration is an aging change that affects the central part of the retina used for driving or reading vision. It does not affect the peripheral vision.

They can’t see the shape of a nose, but they can see everything around that. With wet macular degeneration there is bleeding or swelling. New treatments for wet macular degeneration allow us to give injections inside the eye to maintain a person’s central vision.

1. What are the most common eye problems after age 50?

Bruening: The chances of developing an eye disease increase with age. In the 50s, common eye changes include cataract formation, glaucoma, and the start of macular degeneration. Every decade that a person lives, the chance of getting these diseases increases.

2. How has treatment for cataracts advanced?

Bruening: Cataract formation is a normal part of aging. Over the last 20 years or so, we have seen advancements. Cataract surgery still requires manual removal of the cataract lens with phacoemulsification, but companies are making multifocal lens implants that fold, so we can make smaller incisions when putting the intraocular lens inside the eye. We’re fortunate that current technology is absolutely wonderful. Cataract surgery can be

Organizations work together for Continuum of Care Instead of each organization having separate events, Prime, Mercy Medical Center, Siouxland Aging Services and St. Luke’s Health System have collaborated to put on this year’s Health and Leisure Expo.

A collaborative table featuring the organizations involved will be near the registration table in the lobby of the Stoney Creek Inn conference center.

“This will truly be a collaborative event,” said Pam Yockey, R.N., M.S.N., director of Care Coordination at St. Luke’s Iowa Health System. “We will be checking our name badges at the door. It doesn’t matter where we’re from. We’re all working together for the health of seniors.”

“There are no barriers,” added Leah Johnson, M.D., a faculty advisor for medical residents at Siouxland

Medical Education Foundation, Inc. “We are truly working together.”

Chris Kuchta, advocacy and public relations director for Siouxland Aging Services, said they were already doing an expo to connect people with services and agencies available and increase that awareness, and it made sense to coordinate efforts.

“We work with the hospital on the Care Transitions program,” said Kuchta. “It’s specially geared to facilitate the move from the hospital to home or nursing home to home.”

The organizations are working together on the registration, program, registration box for door prizes, bags, and more.

2010. In November of last year, the boards of both hospitals met for the first time.

They were finding they couldn’t discharge patients from the hospital on Friday.

If patients stay longer than necessary it goes to the hospitals’ length of stay.

“We want patients to go home, but they could break a hip or have a medical emergency. No nursing homes will take a patient for a weekend stay because they’re short staffed and may not have their medications on hand,” Johnson said.

They decided to work together to fix it.

“We came up with Lori McKinley from Mercy and Pam Yockey and Joy Beaver from St. Luke’s. We contacted every care facility. At the first meeting, we had a full room of people,” Johnson said. “It was a whine session.

A couple of physicians asked

why they can’t get patients out. There were valid reasons on both sides.”

They came up with a roadmap on how to improve patient care and break down the barriers to care and care management. It involved identifying the “troublemakers” among physicians and nursing home facilities, Johnson said.

“We needed to make sure a physician was assuming care if the admitting physician and pharmacist were not available for 24 hours,” she said, “and finding transportation for patients was difficult.”

They got off to a good start, but they needed to get more organizations involved because they were experiencing some of the same issues.

Through their collaboration, they realized that all seniors needed all the different services in the community,

“Whenever we had a meeting, we had so many people. About 100 people.

We asked, ‘Who else should be involved?’ There was a 100 percent buy-in from St. Luke’s and Mercy,” McKinley said.

Pharmacies, Hospice of Siouxland, ambulance services, physician clinics and more have joined the collaborative process.

“A lot of invitations have come from this to improve communication,” said Yockey.

They identified the causes of readmission to hospitals, which are not reimbursed, so that patients can be discharged safely. They found that some patients weren’t taking their medications or getting the extra care they needed at home.

They instituted a 24-72

hour post-discharge followup.

“First hours are crucial,” said Johnson. “Patients may be on new medications. They may not be 100 percent stable. Or they may need help with daily care activities. We try to get them in to see their primary doctor to avert bad outcomes.”

They also work together to make sure plans are in place before patients leave the hospital, whether they are going to a nursing home or home.

“We identify a problem and say, ‘Let’s fix it.’ There is a buy-in from everybody,” McKinley said. “We all identify a common ground, why we work in the field we do.

We want to help patients get the best care we can. As long as we’re doing that, we will be going in the right direction. We will do more preventative medicine.”

Here are some tips on some of the most beneficial things you can do to help yourself achieve lifelong well-being.
