Three basic categories for two-handle kitchen faucets

ear Ed: For my new kitchen I want a two-handle style kitchen faucet with a side spray. I know there’s a lot of fancy pullout and single ED DEL handle faucets out there, GRANDE but can you please let me know some basic two-handle faucet styles I can choose from? — Shelly, Washington state Answer: I’ll break down two-handle kitchen faucets into three basic categories. Choose the category that fits you best and explore from there: 1. DECK MOUNT TWO-HANDLE Prices range from low to high end. This is a three-hole install with a fourth hole for a side spray. Deck mounts can include a deck plate or individual components. 2. SINGLE-HOLE TWO-HANDLE Mid- to high-end faucet with a second hole needed for a side spray. Both handles are designed into the rising spout assembly. 3. TWO-HANDLE BRIDGE FAUCETS Higher-end faucet with faucet handles that connect like a bridge above the sink. Along with a side spray sink hole, you can choose between a two- or three-hole faucet body, but cross that bridge when you get there. How should I prepare my car for summer?

‌M

emorial Day marks the beginning of the summer holiday season, and with that, you may be putting plenty of miles on your car. However, nothing ruins a fun vacation faster than a car stalled out on the side of the road. By PAUL F.P. taking some basic POGUE maintenance steps, you can improve the odds your vehicle will get you where you’re going.

Preventative maintenance Keep your oil changes up to date. Most auto shops will perform a basic inspection at this time, and they can often catch developing problems before they get serious. Prior to a long journey, have a mechanic inspect and test belts, hoses, brakes and battery. They should top off all coolant and wiper fluid. Check your tires and verify they’re inflated to the correct pressure. Under-inflated tires both lower gas efficiency and cause accidents. During a long road trip, do this a few times. Big changes in temperature will cause your tires to lose pressure faster. If your road trip is longer than a few thousand miles, rotate your tires midway through. If you have low tread, replace the tires; poor tread Is dangerous. The penny test is a quick and easy way to check tread level. Hold a penny upside down between the tread tire block. If you see the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, you need new tires. If your tires bulge, they definitely need to be replaced. If you’re towing anything, take care to follow the guidelines set by both the car and trailer manufacturers. During long towing sessions, take advantage of rest areas to allow your engine, transmission and brakes to cool down. Steep hills and winding roads take a serious toll on your car, and a brief rest can avoid major problems. Summer puts a lot of strain on your car’s air conditioner. Your

10 TIPS FOR USING

BLACK AND WHITE

‌B

lack and white are not only versatile colors, but combined can create a luxurious yet neutral color palette. Considered classic and timeless, a black-and-white color combination can allow the freedom to change looks simply through the use of accent colCATHY ors. Introducing HOBBS black and white into an existing room or infusing black and white into a previous design space can be achieved in many ways. Here are some top tips. 1. Consider black and or white for some of your primary or main furniture selections such as sofas, beds and side tables. Black can especially bring a luxurious feel. 2. Add black and/or white through the use of artwork. 3. Don’t be afraid to paint an accent wall using colors such as black or dark charcoal. These colors pair especially well with certain species of wood, such as ash or walnut. 4. Mix both black and white as well as black/white selections in the same space. This will help create a sense of cohesiveness. 5. Look for opportunities to add black and white to a space through the use of texture such as toss pillows or area rugs. 6. Use classic black-and-white patterns in a space such as plaid. 7. Blend bold, bright accent colors with black and white such as yellow, green, blue and red. 8. Consider integrating black and white into a space through fixed elements such as cabinetry or built-ins. 9. Look for architectural elements in a space such as fixtures

and finishes as a way to infuse black and white. 10. Add black-and-white elements into a space using accents and accessories such as lamps, vases, toss pillows and books. Q: This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain coffee pot, cream pitcher and sugar bowl. Each piece is decorated with pastel flowers and gold trim, all against a white background. I bought the set at a tag sale and would like to know more about it. If this is part of a set of dinnerware, how can I find additional pieces? Who made it, how old is it and does it have any value as a collectible? I have a lot of questions and hope you can help me. A: Cronin China Co. made your set. It is semi-porcelain and may have once been part of a complete set of dinnerware. Cronin China Co. was

founded in Minerva, Ohio, in 1934. The pattern is a transferware design rather than hand painted. In 1956, U.S. Ceramic Tile Co. acquired the factory. They made floor and wall tile and continued to use the Cronin China Co. name. Similar sets of dinnerware are out of favor with collectors. People prefer to have dinnerware that can go in the dishwasher and microwave. If you plan to add to this pattern, try searching for matching services on the internet. Your set is circa 1940 and might be worth $50 to $75. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she cannot answer individual letters.

While this may sound like a winter checklist item, proper windows and doors can be just as important in the summer, when looking to keep hot temperatures out and cool temperatures in. 2. Plant a garden. There is nothing quite as wonderful as growing your own vegetables. 3. Landscape cleanup.

Typically fall, late spring or early summer are ideal times for a cleanup and sprucing of items such as mulching and weeding. 4. Fill the potholes. Whether it is your driveway or sidewalk, summer is a good time fill in any and all potholes. 5. Add additional lighting. Although the days are longer in the summer, lighting is still just as important as children and adults extend outdoor activities. 6. Install an outdoor kitchen. Now is the time when many families look to dine al fresco. Installing an outdoor kitchen can be the ideal addition to any outdoor experience. 7. Check fixed elements on your home. Fixed elements include stone and brickwork, which should be properly maintained.

8. Repaint. The summer is a time of year when many homeowners may choose to repaint or refresh their home’s exterior. 9. Replace and or check detectors such as your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. 10. Service HVAC equipment. This is the time of year when your air conditioning equipment will be pulling double duty, so you will want to make sure all equipment is capable of working at full capacity. ART OF DESIGN

Do you want your home to be colorful or full of color?

‌S

o often during the summer months or during holidays, we take vacations to visit family or to faraway places to get a bit of respite from work, school or from life in general. On any outing, you might visit a restaurant, a hotel JOSEPH PUBILLONES lobby, museum or historic home that inspires you and gives you the desire to redecorate or to paint the walls of your home. Now the question is what color. And once you have decided on a color palette, the other dilemma is whether you want your home to be colorful or full of color. These are two distinct approaches on how to integrate color into your home. One approach is to paint each room of your home a different color. This will give you rooms that are distinct in their flavor

and can each be decorated in their own style in accordance to the color palette chosen. This will result in a home full of color. The colors can either contrast or complement each other from room to room as the homeowners desire. Some prefer an obvious transition from room to room including drastic color changes that some may consider shocking, like a yellow room next to a glowing fuchsia room next to an apple green room. It takes some confidence and real knowledge of colors and decorating to pull this off. Of course, the latter is an extreme example to demonstrate a point, but the same holds true for more subdued combinations — say, a pale sage room next to a rose pink room followed by a baby blue room. Whether you contrast or com-

mainly in formal rooms. Another approach with regard to color is the sprinkling of colors in small bits. Regardless of whether your walls and backdrop are safe and tempered neutrals or more strident colors, you can always use this approach, as it is relies on colors extrapolated from your works of art, accessories and other items such as your case goods or hard furnishings. This method of using color is most versatile, as it allows you to change the focused color over time. This second approach is for those who may be hesitant to commit to a bold color but like color enough to weave it in plement colors, the transitions through different rooms. For from room to room allow each those who rent an apartment or one to read as individual and unique in style. Historical homes home, this may be the best way to decorate with a favorite color and estates have used this bold without the permanence of the color preference for centuries,

color being on the walls. So, as you may see, there is a difference between a home full of color and a colorful home. Not everyone may like an orange room like I do, but there is always room for touches of the color here and there. Color is an exciting way to express your personality. Let yours shine through like the notes of a trombone or as light as the plucking of a violin’s string. HERE’S HOW

Add a second staircase for the children

‌D

ear James: I am totally remodeling an older house I just purchased. I want to add a second staircase from the kitchen to the bedrooms for the children to use. Can I purchase do-it-yourself kits for this? — Barb L. Dear Barb: InstallJAMES ing a second staircase DULLEY to the second floor is becoming more common in new construction and when remodeling older homes. It will consume quite a bit of floor space, particularly on the first floor, so make sure the resulting room sizes will still be functional. It is possible to build the staircase from scratch or there are staircase

and handrail kits available. Which option you select will depend upon your carpentry skills, your financial budget and your time constraints. Building any project from scratch is most satisfying, but installing a preassembled staircase kit is the option most homeowners select. Installing a staircase is a unique project in that the workmanship must be nearly perfect. The height and size of each stair must be identical. If one is just slightly higher or lower than the rest of them, someone will surely stumble. Also, if the staircase is not adequately solid, there will always be a squeaky step or two. You should be able to order pre-

assembled staircase kits at your home center. If you cannot find any, contact the following companies: AJ Stairways, Duvinage, Mylen Stairs, and Stepstone. These companies will make the staircase kit to your height and width specifications, with the height being most critical. They have to know the exact vertical distance between the first-floor and second-floor surfaces in order to determine how high each step must be. They will select the number of stairs to determine the most common stair height to which you will quickly become accustomed. Please see DULLEY, Page H18

I like to use practical or functional decor in the kitchen. Wooden cutting boards come in so many shapes, sizes and finishes that they make the perfect addition. I don’t think it’s possible to display too many at once. I use them against the kitchen backsplash to break it up and create a more intriguing backdrop. I also use them on countertops and tables to both serve food and display decorative pieces. The look of natural wood doesn’t compete with the other beautiful things in the room and adds a nice organic element to the space. They pair well with decorative bowls, fun glasses and colored napkins for the perfect kitchen vignette. The best part of incorporating finishing touches into a space is you can continuously add and rearrange for fresh, new looks. Switch accessories between rooms until you find the perfect mix. How should I pressure wash my house?

‌P

ressure washing offers a great way to quickly blast dirt and grime from exterior surfaces like driveways and decks, quickly and efficiently freshening up the surface. Pressure washing basically uses PAUL F.P. a water pump and POGUE electric or gasoline motor to power a high-pressure hose and sprayer to generate an extremely powerful spray. In some cases, detergents or other chemicals are used to enhance the effect. Sometimes, the term is used interchangeably with “power washing,” but they’re not quite the same thing. They use very similar tools, but power washers also heat up the water to loosen up dirt or grease. You should take great care when it comes to both pressure washing and power washing, as both require the use of potent tools typically best left to the professionals.

Hiring a power washing service On average, you can expect to pay between $180 and $380 for a pressure washing job. When you hire a pressure washing or power washing service, make sure they’re up to date on EPA regulations regarding runoff water and environmentally safe chemicals. Doing it yourself

If you do decide to rent a pressure or power washer and do the job yourself, take care to do it correctly and safely. A rental washer will generally cost you between $40 and $75 per day. You can buy your own electric model for between $70 and $200, while a more powerful gas model ranges between $300 and $1,000. Protect your face with safety goggles or a face shield. And, before you use the washer, inspect it for damage such as cracked hoses, broken seals or rusty nozzles. Read the instructions carefully, and follow them. Familiarize yourself with the various power settings; in many cases, more power is not necessarily better, and it can make damage more likely. Treat the washer itself with proper respect. The stream can strip skin from the body, so never aim it at another person, and make sure the area is well clear of bystanders while you work. Take special care to protect your DREAMSTIME/TNS‌ doors, windows and plants from the stream. It is best to wait until you have the final flooring on both floors so you are certain of the finished vertical measurement. If you want to install the staircase earlier in the project, perhaps for access to subsequent second-floor projects, precisely determine the thickness of the finished flooring and add

this to the height measurement. In an older house, the walls and floors may have settled and are likely no longer true. In order to get an accurate vertical measurement between the floors, use a laser level positioned at the second floor’s finished height. Project the laser beam along the wall and measure the height directly above where the first floor steps will begin. When the preassembled

staircase is delivered, two or three people should be able to install it. It is critical for you to follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly. With the way they will be assembled, if you miss a support piece, it may be difficult to get back to it once other pieces are glued, nailed or screwed in place. Installing the handrail properly is also important. Nothing makes this job seem homemade more than a wob-

bly handrail. It can also make someone lose their balance and stumble. The heavy newel posts at the top and bottom support the handrail. The balusters spaced in between them are basically just for aesthetics. Carefully install the large dowel rods that attach the newel posts to the floor.
