Sioux City pork plant begins second shift Dignitaries celebrate Seaboard Triumph’s 1st year of operation BRET HAYWORTH

SIOUX CITY – Thirteen months ago, there were fewer than 20 people working on the Seaboard Triumph Foods team, as an opening of the pork producing plant neared.

STF Chief Operating Officer Mark Porter said the pork plant had just hit many milestones, including one year of operation, moving past 1,800 employees and starting a second production shift.

Porter said other milestones lie ahead, include seeing the number of workers reach 2,000 and slaughtering more than 20,000 hogs per day.

“We are continuing to hire, continuing to ramp up,” Porter said.

“Six million hogs (annually) is our destination, late 2019 is where we see reaching that.”

A bevy of state and local officials celebrated the Sioux City plant’s growth at an Oct. 9 ceremony on a rain-sogged day beneath a tent on the plant’s sprawling grounds in the Bridgeport industrial area.

Gov. Kim Reynolds praised the plant’s success and Mayor Bob Scott formally presented the company with a “Growing Sioux City Award.”

“They have been nothing but good corporate citizens since they came here,” Scott said.

The mayor recalled initial discussions in 2013 that ultimately led to STF coming to the city.

After two years of construction, the plant went online in September 2017. Hiring for the first shift gradually ramped up to 1,100 workers — 900 hourly and 200 salaried.

A second phase of construction completed earlier this year brought the total investment to around $330 million. The company also started hiring for the second shift, which will add about

Reynolds noted the Iowa Economic Development Authority awarded Seaboard Triumph $16.5 million in state tax credits and sales and use tax refunds that allowed the project to move forward. The city also provided financial incentives that include waiving $7.7 million in property

taxes for the first five years, based on a scale that will gradually reduce the exemption.

The 942,000-square-foot plant is the second-largest fresh pork plant in the world and one of the newest of its kind in the United States.

Seaboard Triumph Foods is a 50-50 venture between two

leading pork producers – Guymon, Oklahoma-based Seaboard Foods and St. Joseph, Missouribased Triumph Foods. Under the agreement, Seaboard and Triumph each are responsible for supplying one-third of the hogs to the plant, leaving the other one-third to be purchased on the open market from independent producers.

Blind Mt. Everest climber highlights Chamber dinner The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce hosted more than 1,300 community and business leaders at its 33rd annual dinner at the Sioux City Convention Center on Sept. 20.

At the dinner, the Chamber recognized its outgoing board chair, Linda Kalin of the Iowa Poison Control Center, and welcomed its new chair, Nick DeRoos of CF Industries.

The Chamber also recognized local businessman Doug Palmer with the annual W. Edwards Deming award for business leadership and entrepreneurial excellence.

Mayor Bob Scott presented the first- ever USS Sioux City Sailor of the Year Award followed by the

debut of a promotional video encouraging Sioux Cityans to consider participating in the commissioning of the USS Sioux City.

Among the highlights of the evening was a multimedia keynote presentation from Erik We i h e n mayer, who was the first Palmer blind climber to summit Mt. Everest.

CF Industries GM tackles new leadership role Nick DeRoos begins term as chair of Siouxland Chamber Board MASON DOCKTER

SIOUX CITY – Nick DeRoos hopes Siouxland can become a place where even more skilled workers want to live, work and contribute to the local tax base.

DeRoos, general manager of CF Industries’ Port Neal nitrogen complex, is the new chairman of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He started his oneyear term in October.

A 52-year-old native of Alta, Iowa, DeRoos has witnessed many of the region’s bright young minds moving away to places like Minneapolis, Kansas City, and other large cities that offer attractions and resources not to be found here.

“Certainly, workforce development continues to be key for this area,” DeRoos said. “We need to create a draw to Siouxland. We need to do things, whether it’s quality of life amenities, employment opportunities – we need to be drawing people into Siouxland from the surrounding communities as part of our workforce development.”

CF Industries has had success finding operators to run its plants without too much problem, DeRoos said.

“Where we struggle is attracting technical resources – from engineering, electrical, mechanical, chemical engineers,” he said. “There aren’t an abundance of these around here. So we’re trying to recruit people from a lot of warmer areas, if you will, that don’t have the winters.

And we struggle trying to draw them to Sioux City.”

DeRoos himself was once one of those “technical

resources” that CF now has to recruit. He started at then-Terra Industries as a process control engineer in 1993. CF Industries, based in Deerfield, Illinois, acquired Sioux City-based Terra in 2010, and DeRoos became the Port Neal plant manager later that year.

With today’s technically skilled, educated workers being drawn to larger cities and better climates, how can Siouxland attract the Nick DeRoos-es of the future?

Attractions that can brighten up the dull, bitter winters – like Cone Park – might make the area more appealing to young workers, DeRoos suggested. Likewise the local museums and art scene, the Orpheum, the Sioux City Symphony.

“We just have to find a way to get people through the winters,” he said.

Two things Siouxland has going for it, which DeRoos hopes will continue to be a source of strength, are the hospitals and the schools.

If people see Sioux City as a beacon of medicine and education, he suggested, growth will follow.

“Obviously, healthcare is a big aspect to this community. We’re the regional healthcare provider for a lot of the smaller communities and counties around here,” he said. “We need to continue that. That’s a large draw into our community, for people being in town, eating at the restaurants, staying in hotels.”

He also hopes that the remodeling of the Chamber offices on Pierce Street, which began last summer, will be complete before he wraps up his term as chairman. Construction is expected to be finished in fall

“That should be pretty neat,” he said of the new building. “It’s part of modernizing the image of downtown – I think

downtown has a lot of opportunity, there’s office space, there’s other building space for lofts or studio apartments. I don’t know what the plans are, but I

could just see that being somewhat of a micro-urban downtown.”

Had he been asked to lead the Chamber board during the more than $2 billion expansion of the CF Port Neal complex – when roughly 5,300 construction workers and others were putting in long hours from 2013 to 2016, DeRoos probably wouldn’t have had time for those extra duties.

Now that construction is complete, he was able to take on a bigger role with the Chamber.

“I mean, I was just completely consumed getting the expansion done, and the existing plant was continuing to operate as well,” DeRoos said. But he won’t go so far as to say things have slowed at CF since construction wrapped up: the plant now churns out nearly four times as many tons of ammonia as it did

previously, with more than twice as many employees.

“It’s changed. It’s slowed down to the extent that now it’s more routine operations, continuous improvements, focusing on fundamentals of operating a safe plant,” he said.

The return of normalcy to CF Industries means DeRoos has had a chance to spend more quality time with his wife of 28 years, Carla, and their three children. His family time was limited during the expansion period. Now, he’s able to make it to school events, such as athletic contests.

“I missed my oldest boy finishing high school, because I was so engrossed in this,” DeRoos said. “It was tough. You just do what you’ve got to do, and you put your head down and go.

I wasn’t aware of how much they probably missed me or needed me at the time.”

Lea Greathouse will assume the role of vice president of mission, marketing and foundation.

In this new role, Greathouse will provide leadership for Marketing, Advocacy, The Mercy Foundation, and Mercy Child Advocacy Center, as well as Community Benefit and Mission Integration.

SIOUX CITY RAILROAD MUSEUM

The Siouxland Chamber Ambassadors boated down the Missouri River to Decatur, Nebraska and officially welcomed Pop-N-Docs with a ribbon cutting. After owner Mark Kwikkel cut the ribbon, the group enjoyed great food and drinks before gassing up the boats at Pop-N-Docs and heading back to Sioux City.

A recent ribbon cutting celebrated the completion of the Grand Scale Train project at the Sioux City Railroad Museum. Cutting the ribbon are supporters Dave Bernstein and his parents, Gail and Jack Bernstein, Matt Merk, executive director of the Railroad Museum, Larry Obermeyer, president, and Ken Brown, board of directors executive secretary. The ADA-accessible train can carry up to 32 passengers on a three-quarters mile loop around the museum complex. The track consists of 16 lb/yd rail, 2,750, 4 x 4 treated wood ties, 11,000 lag screws and 500 tons of rock.
