Seaboard pork plant set to begin second shift Seaboard Triumph targets mid-October for full startup DAVE DREESZEN

SIOUX CITY — Seaboard Triumph Foods has targeted mid-October as the full startup of a second shift at the Sioux City pork plant.

Since May, the plant has been running limited second-shift operations while hiring and training workers, the company said.

The $301 million plant went online Sept. 5 after two years of construction in the city’s Bridgeport West Business Park. Hiring for the first shift gradually ramped up to 1,100 workers — 900 hourly and 200 salaried.

Since earlier this year, the company has been hiring for the second shift, which will be about 900 jobs,

growing total employment to more than 2,000.

“With their commitment and dedication to make first shift fully operational, we all are looking forward to the second shift ramp-up,” Mark Porter, Seaboard Triumph’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

With the current shift, about 10,500 hogs can be slaughtered and processed daily at the 925,000-square-foot plant, which is the second-largest fresh pork plant in the world and one of the newest of its kind in the United States. Adding a second shift will more than double that number, to about 21,000 hogs daily, or around 6 million hogs per year.

The complex occupies 251 acres in Bridgeport West, bounded roughly

by Interstate 29 to the east, the Missouri River to the west and Sioux Gateway Airport to the south.

Five Star moves call center into larger building Firm moves from one former Gateway building to another

JOURNAL STAFF‌ NORTH SIOUX CITY – Five Star Call Centers has moved into larger quarters in the former Gateway complex in North Sioux City as it hires more staff.

The contract center, which takes inbound customer service calls for various clients, shifted from the Pacific Building, where it started in 2015, to the Peru Building. The new custom-built space has seating for more than 150 employees.

The North Sioux City staff now numbers 80 to 90, said human resources director Amy Patterson.

There are plans to hire 20 to 30 additional workers over the summer, she said. Full- and part-time customer service and technical support jobs are available.

Since opening, the center has taken inbound calls for retail orders, financial services, hotel reservations and other services.

center typically adds 150 to 200 temporary staff to handle its seasonal contracts, she said.

Five Star, formerly known as Lawrence & Schiller TeleServices, was founded in 1986 in Sioux Falls, where its headquarters remain.

The company also operates call centers in Sioux Falls; Fargo, North Dakota; and Wichita, Kansas.

Since 2012, the company has grown from $3.2 million to $21 million in annual revenue, according to the company website.

Seaboard Triumph Foods is a 50-50 venture between two leading pork producers – Guymon, Oklahoma-based Seaboard Foods and St. Joseph, Missouri-based

Triumph Foods. Under the agreement, Seaboard and Triumph each are responsible for supplying a third of that number, leaving about 1 million hogs to be purchased on the open market from independent producers.

“We are so appreciative of the

collaborative efforts with the regional hog producers who have helped supply our plant,” Porter said. “Continuing to build new and strengthen existing relationships with those producers is very important to us.”

The Historic Preservation Commission kicked off a week of activities for Historic Preservation Week culminating in a centennial celebration for the Woodbury County Courthouse. Ace is the highest desDelperdang ignation a participant can achieve and requires both written life skills assessments and golf proficiency performances at each of five levels in the youth development program.

Delperdang is a senior at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, and a member of the school’s golf team, and has been a participant in The First Tee of Siouxland program for nine years.

Delperdang is only the third participant in the Siouxland chapter to achieve Ace in the 11-year history of the local program.

Hannah Rens and Seth Felts also became Aces in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Delperdang plans to enroll at Morningside College in the fall and pursue studies in elementary and special education. She will be active in The First Tee this summer as an assistant coach.

CDC offers heat stroke L.G. Everist wins wastewater award prevention tips SIOUX CITY – According to The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness, occurring when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.

When heat stroke occurs, body temperature can rise to 106 degrees or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given.

Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of the water and salt, typically through excessive sweating. Workers most prone to heat exhaustion are those that are elderly, have high blood pressure and those working in a hot environment.

The CDC recommends the following: • Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible.

• Find an air-conditioned shelter, or public place such as a library or shopping mall.

• Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device.

• Avoid direct sunlight.

• Wear lightweight, light colored clothing.

• Take cool showers or baths.

• Drink more water than usual.

• Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink more fluids.

• Drink between two to four cups of water every hour while working or exercising outside.

• Limit outdoor activity, especially midday when the sun is hottest.

SIOUX CITY – The Sioux City school district now consumes less than half of the electricity that it once did, thanks to an energy-conserving program that has saved an estimated $3.27 million over the last several years.

In the last four years, the Sioux City public schools have stayed in the top 10 in the nation (among cities with fewer than 100,000 residents) in terms of energy efficiency.

How did the district achieve such a feat?

Jeremy Taylor, an energy specialist for

the district, said the energy efficiency efforts didn’t involve anything flashy.

“In our case, it’s primarily through the changed behavior of staff, students and users,” Taylor said.

Dixon County wind farm construction underway Facebook, Adobe to buy clean energy from Rattlesnake project TY RUSHING

WAKEFIELD, Neb. — Facebook and Adobe struck a friendly deal to share power generated from the Rattlesnake Creek Wind Project, developer of the wind farm under construction in Northeast Nebraska.

Rattlesnake Creek is a $430 million wind farm being built across a 32,000-acre area in Dixon County, between the towns of Allen, Emerson and Wakefield, by Enel Green Power North America Inc., a subsidiary of the multinational Enel Group.

Under a previous agreement, Enel agreed to sell 200 megawatts of the 320 megawatts Rattlesnake Creek will eventually produce to Facebook to power its new data center in Papillion, Nebraska, near Omaha. With the new agreement, Enel will sell 10 megawatts of power to Adobe from 2019 to 2028; in 2029, all the power generated by Rattlesnake Creek will be sold exclusively to Facebook.

By purchasing all of its power from Rattlesnake Creek, the social media giant’s new data center will run exclusively on renewable energy.

of our business,” Bobby Hollis, director of global energy at Facebook, said in a news release earlier this year.

Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel’s Global Renewable Energies Division, said the company was excited it was able to find a solution that suited Adobe and Facebook.

“Agreements like these are a prime example of our ability to work collaboratively with

corporate customers on tailormade solutions, managing multiple off-takers with different energy supply volume needs,” he said.

Rattlesnake Creek is expected to go online by the end of this year but won’t be fully operational until 2019. About 300 construction jobs were created for the project and 12 permanent jobs will be created.

Once fully operational, Rattlesnake Creek will generate about

1.3 terawatt hours annually, which is enough energy to meet the equivalent annual consumption needs of more than 105,000 U.S. households, while avoiding the emission of around 940,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

The 101-turbine wind farm also will distribute $80 million in property tax and landowner payments over the first 20 years, making it one of the largest wind

farms in Nebraska, according to Enel.

Prior to Facebook’s involvement, the Rattlesnake Creek project had been stagnant since 2013 after its former owners, Trade Winds, failed to find buyers for the energy the wind farm would have produced. Nebraska law at the time required wind farms to sell 10 percent of its output to instate utilities and the rest out-ofstate.

Energy FROM PAGE 10 Around the time Taylor became the energy specialist in 2013, the district started to review where energy was being used, and whether there was any way to cut power usage without significant drawbacks.

“There are ways to save energy inappropriately,” he said, stressing that “indoor air quality, comfort and classroom environment” must still be maintained despite trying to conserve energy.

So the district got creative.

Taylor cited a few techniques that have been used to cut energy usage, including “co-location,” in which classrooms are consolidated to the same floor of a multifloor school as much as possible.

“If I have two classrooms down on the lower level, and 20 classrooms on the upper level but capacity for 40 classrooms, it only makes sense to consolidate,” he said, and thus save money on heating or cooling the lower level. “That’s an example of trying to pull administrators, staff together, and modifying how we use energy.”

More energy saving ideas: turn off the cafeteria refrigerators in the summer, and regulate the use of engine block heaters for school buses so that they’re only drawing power when they’re really needed.

And then there’s the “staggering” tactic, in which the buildings run their air-handlers at different times to avoid being charged a premium utility rate for excessive simultaneous energy usage. While this might not inherently conserve energy, it does save money.

The recently-built Perry Creek Elementary School touts LED

lighting and skylights (the sun is free after all, and readily available during the day), as well as motion-sensing hallway lights. In a bid to have a more-independent water supply, the district now has uses wells for 70 percent of its irrigation, and tries to not irrigate at all during rainy times.

Geothermal heating is used in five buildings, in which the stable temperatures underground are used to regulate temperatures inside the buildings.

“Geothermal is huge in this district,” Taylor said.

Taylor, who was a teacher prior to becoming an energy specialist, said the district’s energy conservation provides a powerful object lesson for students. He recently worked with a group from West High School on new conservation ideas for local businesses.

“Some of what they came up with, I was blown away by,” he said.

Twenty of the district’s buildings were recently awarded 2017 Energy Star certifications by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a mark of “superior energy performance,” according to a press release.

Buildings certified by Energy Star use, on average, about 35 percent less energy than comparable buildings, according to energystar.gov.

Over the last five years, the district has managed to cut electricity consumption back by a total of 33.29 million Kilowatt hours – which works out to 13,366 tons of coal that didn’t get burned, and 27,982 metric tons of carbon dioxide that didn’t get emitted into the atmosphere.

In a statement, district Superintendent Paul Gausman said he’s proud of all the district has done to use energy wisely.

“Energy efficiency is a powerful practice, not only because it is better for the environment, but it is also a responsible way to manage tax payer dollars,” Gausman said. “While more and more companies are experiencing increases in energy bills, the Sioux City Community Schools are in fact experiencing significant decreases in our costs.”

Energy efficiency is a major consideration in new building construction within the district, Taylor said, which means more geothermal, more LED lighting, more-efficient air handling systems and so forth. He echoed Gausman’s sentiments about being thrifty with public funds.

“We need to be good stewards of tax dollars – not only for the longevity of buildings that are going to last 100 years, but also from an environmental standpoint,” said Taylor, who is also a Woodbury County supervisor.
