SIOUX CITY | The Iowa State University College of Design recently presented its 2015 Christian Petersen Design Award to Iowa economic development director Debi Durham.

Established in 1980, the award is given annually to alumni, staff and friends of the university for distinguished work that advances the design and art professions. It is named for the noted artist who was Iowa State’s sculptorin-residence from 1934 to 1955.

Durham, of Sioux City, was honored during homecoming at the ISU Alumni Association’s 84th annual Honors and Awards Ceremony on Oct. 31.

P r i o r to her appointment as economic development director by Gov. Terry Durham Branstad in 2011, Durham served as president of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, Siouxland Initiative and Siouxland Chamber Foundation for 15 years.

During her tenure, she was instrumental in helping Sioux City achieve an Iowa Great Places designation from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. With funds from a Great Places grant and the Siouxland Chamber, a former boiler/steam generation building in the

Historic Fourth District was converted into the ISU Design West studio, a satellite facility of the ISU College of Design.

“Durham demonstrates a clear understanding of the link between design, education and economic development. She has been a strong advocate for the importance of design innovation to advancing the state’s economic progress,” Luis Rico-Gutierrez, dean of the design college, said in a statement.

Durham has a bachelor of science in business administration from Missouri Southern State University.

She is a member of the Briar Cliff University board of directors and the ISU College of Design Advancement Council.

Siouxland governors pledge help to train work force BRET HAYWORTH

SOUTH SIOUX CITY | Gathered together in Siouxland, governors from three neighboring states said they want high school and college students to dial early into the growing number of opportunities of highly skilled blue-collar jobs that are increasingly hard to fill.

At the 14th Tri-State Governors Conference on Oct. 23, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard heard from business leaders that an offshoot to having an unemployment rate well below 4 percent means there aren’t enough people to fill jobs.

Additionally, Tec-Corp CEO Skip Perley said, the

people who apply for those jobs often don’t possess proper skills.

“We have added another gap – there are just not enough workers, no matter the skill level,” Perley said.

Daugaard said he understands that “two-gap” reality, if not addressed, has the potential to undercut tri-state economies.

Daugaard and Branstad said people who are looking for good-paying jobs need to recognize that manufacturing jobs today are much less institutionalized.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said Nebraska has a teaching initiative that seeks to get students by ninth grade to start thinking of possible careers.

Ricketts, who was elected in 2014, was a first-time participant at the Tri-State

Governor’s Conference, while Daugaard and Branstad had taken part before.

“We need your help,” Ricketts said to the crowd of 200 business and community leaders at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City.

“Continue to work together in Siouxland, work with our (governmental) folks on how we can help facilitate the things you need.”

Branstad and Daugaard touted an existing program called dual-enrollment, in which students can take college-level courses while attending high school. They said that should be embraced by more Siouxland students, who could delve into careers such as health care or manufacturing to get a sense of work they like.

SIOUX CITY | Longtime Sioux City business and community leader Charese Yanney is headed to the Iowa Business Hall of Fame.

Yanney will be inducted into the hall of fame by the Greater Des Moines Committee during its annual black tie dinner at The Meadows Events and Conference Center on Dec. 3.

The two other 2015 inductees are James W. Hubbell III, a prominent Des Moines real estate developer, and James Tyler, a second-generation owner of Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Yanney said she was shocked to learn she had been selected for such a prestigious honor.

“It was the furthest thing from my mind,” she said. “I never thought, for somebody with as small of business as mine, it would ever happen.’’

DAKOTA DUNES | The Siouxland Initiative is asking local governments in the metro area to increase their voluntary contribution to the economic development agency to help fund a new endeavor designed to grow the local workforce.

Earlier this year, The Siouxland Initiative and the Siouixland Chamber of Commerce created a new full-time position – director of workforce solutions – in response to concerns from new and expanding employers about a shortage of skilled workers in the region.

The post was filled by Kory Menken, who previously served 12 years as economic development director in North Sioux City.

To help cover the cost of Menken’s salary and other related costs, such as travel and marketing, TSI is suggesting local governments contribute 50 cents for each of their residents over the next two years. For example, the per-capita contribution for Sioux City, with a population of about 82,000, would be around $41,000.

McGowan mentioned the per-capita contributions during TSI’s annual meeting Nov. 12 at the Dakota Dunes Country Club.

He also urged private employers to increase their contributions to help fund the workforce development efforts.

“Only those communities

who are able to demons t ra t e a n adequate labor force are going to be s u cce ss f u l in recruiting McGowan companies,” he said in an interview afterward.

Governing bodies of the local governments are expected Gronbach to hold votes on the suggested donations in the coming weeks.

The extra workforcerelated donations would be on top of the current contributions that TSI receives from its private and public partners to fund its operations. About 80 percent come from the private sector.

McGowan noted it’s the first time in 10 years TSI has asked for an increase in donations. The organization is moving toward annual contributions, instead of the past practice of multi-year campaigns every few years.

leaders attended Thursday’s luncheon, which was sponsored by Western Iowa Tech Community College.

TSI’s annual meeting rotates among sites in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

The keynote speaker was demography expert Ken Gronbach of Connecticut. Gronbach detailed the changing demographics in America and how they will create new business opportunities.

Members of Generation Y, those born generally between 1984 and 2004, are entering their prime earning years, he said. At 86 million strong, they outnumber the 78 million baby boomers.

“The largest generation in the history of our nation, which is going to consume at levels we can’t understand, is headed right for you,” Gronbach told the audience.

Following a decades-long trend, the nation will also continue to become more racially diverse, he said.

“It’s going to change. Get over it,” Gronach told the audience that he noticed was “mostly white people.”

SIOUX CITY | The final push to widen U.S. Highway 20 to four lanes in western Iowa was celebrated by Gov. Terry Branstad and local leaders at a Nov. 17 ceremony in Sioux City.

Work on the final 40 miles of two-lane highway is scheduled to be finished in 2018.

“This is gonna be a legacy that the passionate, dedicated people who worked so long to make it possible can be very proud of for decades and decades. We a re go n n a see a lot of great things Yanney happen here in Sioux City and Northwest Iowa as a result,” Branstad said.

SIOUX CITY | The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business recently presented one of its highest honors Thursday to the Sioux City family that has owned and operated Jolly Time Pop Corn for more than a century.

Members of the Smith family received the Oscar C. Schmidt Iowa Business Leadership Award on Oct. 29 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

Gov. Terry Branstad offered remarks during the ceremony.

The award, established in 1980 and given every few years, recognizes outstanding Iowa business leaders.

Sarah Gardial, dean of

the Tippie College, said the award “shines a light” on an Iowa business that shares the core values the college teaches to its students: integrity, innovation and impact.

“This company represents all three,” Gardial said of Jolly Time.

Through the vision and innovation of the company founder, Cloid Smith, Jolly Time created an industry where none existed previously. Smith harvested the first ears of popcorn in the fall of 1914 near the Sac County town of Odebolt, Iowa. As legend has it, he got into a dispute with a grain buyer over the price for his crop. So, he and his son, Howard, hauled their corn to Sioux City, where they shelled, cleaned and

For your health, reduce your intake of red meat Red meat and processed meats have been a hot news item in the last month. Everyone is upset over their beloved meats, especially their bacon. One would think that this was new information but we have known for years that there is a link between red meats, processed meats and colorectal cancer.

The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) has had the recommendation since 2007 to limit red meat to less than 18 oz. of cooked red meat and to avoid processed meats.

The research shows that there are several ways red meat may increase cancer risk: ■■ *Red meat contains the heme form of iron.

This compound can damage the lining of the colon*

Red meat stimulates the production in the gut of N-nitroso compounds, which are cancercausing agents ■■ Cooking meat at high temperatures such as grilling, produces two cancer promoters: heterocyclic amines ( HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs) When you grill your meat, the AICR has these recommendations: Marinate: Studies have suggested that marinating your meat before grilling can decrease the formation to HCAs. Scientists theorize that the antioxidants

in these marinades block HCAs from forming.

Pre Cook: If you are grilling larger cuts, you can reduce the time your meat is exposed CINDY GATES to the flames by partially cooking it in a microwave, oven or stove first. Immediately place the partially cooked meat on the preheated grill. This helps keep your meat safe from bacteria and other food pathogens that can cause illness.

Lean Cuts: Trimming the fat off your meat can reduce flare-ups and charring. Cook your meat in the center of the grill

Mix It Up: Cutting meat into smaller portions and mixing with veggies can help shorten cooking time.

Go Green: Grilling vegetables and fruits produces no HCAs and plant-based foods are actually associated with lower cancer risk.

Research also shows that there are several reasons that processed meat may increase cancer risk: ( processed meats include sausage, bacon, ham , hot dogs, pepperoni, salami, bologna, deli/luncheon meats) ■■ the actual processing of meat often involves nitrites that may form cancer-causing N-nitroso compounds ■■ processing may involve smoking which leads

to formation of cancer causing PAHs ■■ adding high amounts of salt can promote the development of stomach cancer Does this mean processed meat is as much of a cause of cancer as cigarettes?

No. Although WHO now classifies both processed meat and cigarettes in the highest category of carcinogen, these classifications reflect the strength of the evidence behind them, not the level of risk. Abestos is also in this category.

In some studies, participants who eat diets highest in red/processed meat experience a risk for colon cancer nearly double that of those who ate the lowest amounts of red-processed meat. So instead of eating bacon, bologna, ham,

smoked turkey, etc, try to eat canned chicken, egg salad, tuna salad, peanut butter, and cheese. And remember to put lots of veggies on your sandwich.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics strive to communicate messages that emphasize a balance of food and beverages.

There is a middle ground that is based on facts and common sense. IF you consume red meats in moderation, it’s a non issue. But more important, is whether you are actually including the foods daily to help your body function at its best-fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

people. The risks of MSD injuries increase with awkward and repetitive postures, excessive forces, and high frequency job tasks.

Ergonomic Risk Factors with a Strong Research Basis are: 1) Awkward postures that are repetitive or sustained postures such as; bending forward at the waist 30 or more degrees, working above shoulder level or below knee level, wrist extended greater than 45 degrees, flexed or deviated wrist 30 degrees or more, reaching with your arms fully extended and reaching with your hands above head level, and kneeling or squatting for more than two hours a day.

2) Excessive force tends to increase with the use of tools and equipment that vibrates or is slippery. Posture habits of the worker and working away from your body with arms extended and holding tool or object.

3) Frequency that is repetitive and long durations of movement.

Note: When these three risk factors are combined the risks of MSD and CTDs increase at a much greater rate.

4) Contact stress of wrist and elbow to sharp or vibrating surfaces. This could be direct wrist or forearm compression to a sharp edge of work surface or desk when using a laptop, tablet, or keyboard.

5) Vibration tools and equipment or whole body vibration – this is common when using a forklift as well as for truck drivers. This speeds the fatigue and increases risks of stiffness and pain, or nerve irritations overtime.

To help reduce the risks of OSHA recordable injuries and improve employee health, vitality and wellbeing:

• Keep everything within an easy reach. If you work at a computer workstation, keep your mouse and keyboard close to you, so you can keep your elbows as close to your sides as possible. Also, check the position of your phone, paperwork, calculator, etc. for their setup position and work to set them up less than a fully extended arms reach.

• Work at proper heights. Keep most of your daily work between knee and shoulder level with storage of equipment and tools that are frequently used or the most awkward size, shape and heaviest weight.

• Reduce excessive forces. When lifting, use a Staggered Stance (athletic-ready posture with feet wider than shoulder width apart and one foot in front of the other).

• Reduce looking down awkward and high force postures at your cell phone, laptop, or tablet with your head more than 30 degrees forward bending, side bending, or rotated.

• Limit walking with your head down and looking at your feet. Instead stand up tall and walk with swinging of both of your arms to improve total body flexibility, mobility, vitality, safety, and well-being.

• Use whole hand and fingers when using your mouse and make sure mouse is proper size for your hand and finger length.

• Use both hands to text, instead of only one hand to greatly reduce awkward forces and postures to elbows, wrists, thumbs, and fingers reducing tendonitis and carpal tunnel risk factors.

• Sit up tall with both feet flat on the floor or on a footrest and use a

document holder to hold paperwork when using a laptop, tablet, or working at computer.

• Avoid the most common awkward sitting posture habits of pulling both legs back underneath your chair, crossing your legs, sitting on your feet, or sitting with both legs spread wide apart and slouching.

• Purchase and use “Mechanix” anti-vibration gloves to reduce the risk of tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome to your hands when using tools that vibrate and require heavier grip strength such as sanders, grinders, drills, chain saws, lawn mowers, weed whackers, etc.

• Work in good industrial athlete “WorkSmart” postures. When lifting anything, work to keep your head up and feet wider than shoulder width apart, with your feet staggered (athletic-ready posture).

•Reduce excessive repetition. Observe job tasks and processes of work flow to see if you have any wasted or un-necessary movements or activities that may be able to be eliminated or the ergonomics and job setup and body mechanics of workers improved to greatly reduce this MSD risk factor.

• Minimize fatigue to your working, aging body. Vary your WorkSmart posture and body mechanics, perform WorkSmart dynamic stretches, drink 40 or more ounces of water daily working towards half your body weight in ounces, eat breakfast or healthy foods daily, smile and laugh, focus on what is going right in your life and have an attitude of gratitude and optimism.

USS Sioux City gifts Chamber offers collection of merchandise to support new Naval ship’s crew NICK HYTREK

SIOUX CITY | Struggling to think of the perfect Christmas gift for a NavySiouxland Chamber offers collection of USS Sioux City merchandise veteran or a former Sioux City resident yearning for a reminder of home?

How about a unique item featuring the crest of the USS Sioux City, one of the Navy’s newest ships that is nearing completion?

The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce has a number of items created by the ship’s crew for sale. All proceeds will go toward a fund that supports USS Sioux City crew members and their families.

“We acquired this merchandise and we said 100 percent of sales will go to this fund,” Chamber president Chris McGowan said.

The Chamber has had the items since Oct. 1, shortly after the ship’s commander and a dozen of his crew members were surprise guests at the Chamber’s annual dinner in September, when the ship’s crest was unveiled.

The crest incorporates elements of Sioux City’s history, including the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Chief War Eagle. The image will be displayed on the ship, through patches on uniforms and caps worn by the crew, and official ship stationery and other documents. The crest was developed by three of the ship’s crew leaders after they visited Sioux City this summer.

When they returned for the Chamber dinner, they brought many items with the crest on them. Chamber leaders told them they would sell the items here in Sioux City as a way for local residents to feel a connection to the ship.

“It’s a way to begin to build a long-term relationship with the crew and the ship,” McGowan said.

The USS Sioux City is expected to be

launched this winter in a Wisconsin ship yard. After months of testing, it is likely to be delivered to the Navy in 2017.

One of the Navy’s new class of littoral combat ships, the USS Sioux City is designed to sail closer to the coast and into shallower waters than other naval vessels.

The ship is designed for mine detection, clearing mines, anti-submarine warfare

and surface warfare. The ship will have a crew of 53, many of whom could benefit from the money raised by the sale of USS Sioux City merchandise.

New director at Ronald McDonald House SIOUX CITY | A familiar face has joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Siouxland to help families. Christy Batien started earlier this fall and is the new executive director.

Sioux City gains ‘Skilled Iowa’ designation Gov. Branstad also leads workforce development forum during visit DAVE DREESZEN

SIOUX CITY | The city of Sioux City has achieved the state’s requirements to become a Skilled Iowa Community.

Gov. Terry Branstad formally announced the designation at a ceremo- Branstad ny Oct. 28 at the Sioux City Convention Center. The Skilled Iowa initiative, launched in 2012, is aimed at closing the skill gap that many Iowans are confronted with when they look for work.

While in town, Branstad also led a roundtable

discussion at Western Iowa Tech Community College with local business and government leaders focusing on education goals for building the state’s work force. It was one of three Future Ready Iowa Roundtables the governor held in the state during October.

The Branstad administration is working toward a goal of having 70 percent of Iowans in the work force to have education or training beyond high school by 2025. The higher skills are needed so that more Iowans have greater career opportunities and employers have the skilled work force they need.

The Skilled Iowa initiative helps develop the work

force by encouraging workers to earn the National Career Readiness Certificate, or NCRC. Through an assessment, the NCRC measures basic workplace skills.

The Skilled Iowa program aims to have 10 percent of businesses in Skilled Iowa Communities support the program by hiring certified workers and recommending the NCRC to job applicants, accounting for 20 percent of total employment in the area.

Middle-skill occupations — jobs such as pharmacy tech, legal secretary, computer support specialist, and welder — make up about 50 percent of Iowa’s occupations, but middleskill workers make up only about 33 percent of the state’s work force, according figures from the Iowa Workforce Development’s

Bureau of Labor and Occupational Analysis.

In contrast, low-skill jobs make up about 18 percent of the state’s occupations, but low-skill workers make up about 38 percent of the work force.

Branstad’s appearance in Sioux City was part of a swing through Northwest Iowa to recognize communities adopting state initiatives to grow the work force.

On Oct. 27, Branstad stopped in Sheldon and Rock Rapids to formally announced that O’Brien and Lyon counties, respectively, have been designated as Home Base Iowa communities. At a Oct. 28 morning visit in Orange City, the governor also announced the designation for Sioux County.

On Oct. 4, 2013, John Dunning was severely injured in an EF4 tornado that hit Wayne, Nebraska. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center with multiple fractures, lacerations and a traumatic brain injury. After a lengthy stay at Mercy, he went on to Madonna for three months of intensive specialized rehabilitation. He has recovered from his injuries and has returned to his position as chief information officer at Wayne State College.

surgeons on Mercy’s Trauma team, is a general surgeon with Midland’s Clinic, P.C. in Dakota Dunes. He specializes in general surgery, trauma surgery and wound care.
