Marismas de zacate Grass Marshes Los marismas de zacate son áreas grandes de vegetación escasa y baja con un suelo de bajo contenido en oxigeno y que permanece inundado la mayor parte del año. Algunas especies de árboles se han adaptado a estas condiciones y la mayor parte de la vegetación son algunas especies de zacate, juncos y carrizos que rara vez pasan los tres metros de altura. Las marismas de zacate tierra adentro tienen mayormente arbustos y algunos árboles además del zacate, estas son mas secas y tienen menor salinidad. Estos ecosistemas corren peligro en la temporada de seca debido a la presencia de incendios naturales.

Los cenotes son grandes cuerpos de cavernas formados por el paso del agua y llenos de la misma. La mayor parte de los cenotes están conectados con otros por medio de túneles. Y ocasionalmente se han encontrado cenotes aislados completamente de cualquier otro cuerpo de agua, algunos de ellos contienen especies de peces y otros animales y plantas que han evolucionado con el tiempo hasta convertirse en especies totalmente diferentes. Los petenes son áreas aisladas de bosque tropical que pueden tener un diámetro desde algunos metros hasta varios kilómetros y se encuentran rodeados por zonas de humedales. Los petenes se pueden encontrar solo en Cuba, en Florida, y en México, en la península de Yucatán. La mayoría de los petenes en México tienen un cenote en el centro, lo cual hace que la vegetación crezca en anillos concéntricos desde los anillos de árboles del bosque tropical, hasta los anillos de zacates y arbustos. Las especies más comunes son cedar, mahogany, anda zapote en el anillo central, que esta rodeado de varios tipos de palmas y de chechem y eventualmente mangles, arbustos y zacates. Hay gran cantidad de fauna dentro de los petenes, desde pequeños insectos hasta grandes mamíferos. Un tasistal es un islote que se encuentra en los marismas de zacate y en su mayoría la vegetación es tasiste (Acoellorraphe wrightii), encontrando también zacate (Cladium jamaicensis), y algunas otras especies como chechem negro (Metopium brownei) y mangle botoncillo (Conocarpus erectus). Some species of trees have adapted to these conditions and the majority of the vegetation are some grass species, rushes, and reeds which rarely surpass three meters in height. The grass marshes further inland are mostly bushes and some trees besides the grass, these are drier and are less saline. These ecosystems are in danger during the dry season due to the presence of natural fires.

Occasionally, isolated cenotes have been found completely isolated from any other bodies of water. Some of them contain species of fish, other animals, and plants which have evolved through time and turned into totally different species.
