How LTA and Transport Operators are Enhancing Active Mobility and Safety in Singapore Mobility is key to the functioning of our lives in Singapore. An efficient people-mover public transportation system is the backbone of urban planning. Envisioning ahead, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Singapore is poised to develop an integrated and sustainable transport system that meets the diverse needs of its Singaporeans. LTA is working with transport operators to build a sustainable and people-centric transport system that responds to people of all age groups. Let’s find out how LTA and transport operators are enhancing active mobility and safety in Singapore. 1. LTA launched the Land Transport Masterplan 2040 (LTMP2040) to make travelling from one location to another more pleasant, welcoming, and safer for people. As part of this, LTA is pedestrianising paths to create wider footpaths or cycling paths. Such paths will be closed off to vehicles and reserved for pedestrians, bicycles, non-motorised Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs), and Personal Mobility Aids (PMA). 2. In phase 1, the pedestrianisation of Eng Hoon Street and widening of footpaths at Seng Poh Road and Lim Liak Street will start. It will create a safer walking environment and free up spaces for community use. 3. Under phase 1, various residential and commercial sections along Havelock Road have been improved for a more comfortable walking experience for residents and visitors. 4. The pedestrianisation of Woodlands Ring Road is expected t be completed in Q3 of 2022. It will provide a safer and more seamless walking connection for residents to Kampung Admiralty and Admiralty MRT station. 5. SMRT, a premier multi-modal transport operator in Singapore, introduced Wheelchair Accessible Bus services for mobility-challenged commuters. 6. A reliable rail network requires regular maintenance to improve the safety and reliability of the rail transit system. Together with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), SMRT is carrying out the renewal works of the MRT network for better and smoother rides for commuters. 7. SMRT installed patrol robots that are programmed to broadcast Safe Management Measure messages and enhance the safety and security of the Chuan Depot. 8. To enhance the walkability of the Civic District, it is fully pedestrianised by LTA. Visitors will be able to enjoy a seamless walking experience between Esplanade Park, Empress Place, and Padang. 9. SMRT has maintained high-reliability standards, with the buses travelling an average of more than 1 million passenger-km before experiencing delays. Commenting on the efforts taken by SMRT, Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman, said: “We strongly support the national effort to ensure Singapore remains a highly liveable city for generations to come. Seah Moon Ming further added: “The Singapore Green Plan sets a 2030 target to have all vehicles run on cleaner energy. This requires a massive effort by the Government and industry players to drive the adoption of electric vehicles (EV) and establish a national EV charger network.” 10. SMRT is working with Enterprise Singapore (ESG), the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES), LTA, and other railway partners to develop Singapore’s first railway standards that will cover asset management, maintenance, safety, security, and service. Commenting on the safety aspect of Singapore’s transport network. Neo Kian Hong, SMRT CEO, said: “We must ensure that the capabilities and processes required to run the public transport are continuously improved upon. We are collaborating with SIT, AI.SG and commercial vendors on video analytics, software, and digital systems to make sure our systems run smoother.” Conclusion
