Born 10 weeks premature with spastic quardiplegia, Gemma weighed just 580g at birth. For months, she did not have a name. “The doctor said she might not make it, ” said her mum, Jacqueline At the age of eight, Gemma started horse riding therapy. She has since represented Singapore at the highest level of competition - the Paralympic Games.
“In the past, I had no confidence in myself because I felt different from the others, especially when people looked at me in a strange manner,” said the Muhammad Diroy Bin Noordin.
Standing at 1.29-metre tall, Diroy was diagnosed with Dwarfism since birth.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games, Diroy broke the national record twice for F40/41 Shot Put, achieving a distance of 9 92m and 8th place finish

Juni Syafiqa discovered that she could play the sport of boccia when she was 16 years old Boccia became her "purpose" in life. Today, Syafiqa is an independent lady who's capable of contributing to her family, as well as the greater community. Syafiqa volunteers with the SDSC to promote the sport of boccia.
To build a vibrant and inclusive community where persons with disabilities can pursue their sporting aspirations.
Thanks to the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), the SDSC now holds recreational sessions at SICC’s bowling alley two to three times a month. More than 100 persons with disabilities from various homes and disability services have since been empowered to bowl, with the guidance of an experienced coach, and assistive equipment.
Born with cerebral palsy, Maisarah could hardly walk when she was a child as the right side of her body was limp from cerebral palsy. However, sports and physical activity were a game changer for Maisarah
“The exercise has really helped, she is healthier, fitter… she’s more stable now and can run!” said Rosmah, Maisarah's mother.
Prior to boccia, Aloysius and his family experienced difficulties in bonding with one another. However, their lives took a turn when they stumbled upon this sport. Boccia became the catalyst for a newfound common bond among them. Aloysius' mother stepped up as his ramp assistant, before his father also took up the game. Aloysius' passion for the game grew rapidly.
With the support of his family, he excelled as a young athlete, even winning the GOLD medal in the BC3 Individual (Male) category at the inaugural World Boccia Youth Championships 2023.
I never knew that a person with cerebral palsy can achieve anything big, but with the sport I’m participating in currently, it changed my mindset and I am motivated to have a dream to pursue too!

SDSC's public education programmes seek to promote awarenss and understanding of persons with disabilities to audiences such as schools. Athletes are also able to earn an alternative source of income to help with their living expenses through SDSC's outreach engagements.
