Duterte is scarier than Marcos And many Filipinos like it. BY RYAN NICOLAS Many pundits have likened President Duterte to the late dictator Marcos and their arguments are not baseless. Seemingly, Duterte has followed a lot of things from the playbook of dictators including that of Marcos. Should Duterte really emulate Marcos and his rule, his dictatorship would be a whole lot stronger than his idol’s. Better scapegoat Marcos and Duterte both used fear to justify their quest for expanded powers. For Marcos, it was fear from the communists. For Duterte, it is fear from drug pushers and users. This selection of scapegoat is important. Being a communist is not really ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ in itself. It is a valid political ideology. Being communist has stopped being illegal since 1992. But we know that everywhere, drugs and addiction are ‘bad.’ It is a whole lot harder to sympathize with drug pushers and users. For one, everyone can agree that it is bad, and in a conservative society where legality is confused with morality, it is pretty clear: drugs are evil. And if you seem sympathetic to these evil people, then you must be evil yourself. “Adik ka no?” The Silence of the Reds Since our independence, left-wing activists particularly those from the “Makabayan bloc” have been the staunchest critics of the government. They find flaw in almost everything about the government and most of the time, they are actually right. But now that they have stopped criticizing the government despite all the things that are happening, the silence is just deafening. Ever since, the communists remain undefeated and so, Duterte took a different approach. If you cannot beat them, why don’t you let them join you? And he did. Three of his cabinet members were nominated by the Communist Party (CPP). Now, Duterte is the only president to not have an effigy burned by the left in recent history. Continued on page 10.
