My fingers are tired from typing up that “Hometown Happenings” page (16), go take a look! Jessamine County is BOOMING with events all summer from free concerts in both Nicholasville and Wilmore, to our Kentucky Wine and Vine Fest, Wilmore’s 4th of July parade, to the Antique Tractor Show and The More Tales Festival There’s even more than that - I’m so happy we are going to have plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and have some fun right here at home this season.

This means you all are loving on the businesses who make this possible for us to have a free local publication Thank you for that Thank you for picking this up and reading it You make my dreams come true! I can’t help but remember being 10, stapling a bunch of pages together, grabbing my newest box of colored pencils, and making my own “magazine.” I can’t believe I’ve been able to do this for you. I’m forever grateful for the love you show me here, and also on JESS FM 105 9 Radio has been in my family and in my blood for most of my entire life Being able to serve Jessamine County with its own radio station is something I consider an honor and a privilege.

No matter if they are going to college, trade school, or straight into the work force, we are so proud of them, and are hope they stay in Jessamine County and keep all that awesomeness right here! This edition is also one to celebrate the season, its holidays, and the simple pleasures that come with sunshine and a cool breeze.

Rekindle Your Indoor Lighting
5 Tips for Updating Your Interior Lighting This Season
by: Britt Moses
When it comes to our indoor lighting, for some reason, like much of what we see in our home on a daily basis, it kind of fades into the background and doesn’t capture our attention much
Lighting is a constant That is, until a bulb is blown or the electricity goes out I digress
So, what do you do now that the indoor lighting has your attention?
Here are 5 tips for updating your interior lighting this summer
1. Find ways to add more natural light
Often we find that curtains add a lot of aesthetic to a room, warming it up and drawing the eye up to the ceiling
However, to enhance the lighting in your home, try pulling the curtains back, or trade them for sheers that would let natural light flood in softly
2. Switch out your light bulbs
It’s not often we think about fixing what isn’t broken, and a light bulb is one of those things If your light still works, why switch the bulb?
Switching from fluorescent and bright white lights to warmer, lower wattage lights helps to cozy a room, flatter your decor and furniture, and change the overall feel of the space.
3. Hang mirrors
You might think this has nothing to do with light, and on the surface, you’d be right But when you add mirrors to your walls, it not only makes the room feel bigger, it also reflects light, and makes any room feel more lighted with even the same amount of light as usual.
4. Add plug-in lighting
Not every light has to hang from the wall or ceiling Add lamps or sconces to keep your project both inexpensive, and inviting
5. Replace older light fixtures
Don’t forget that trends are everchanging, and it might be time to examine your fixtures. Opt for more modern updated lighting to complement your space and add value to your home
A seasonal home maintenance checklist helps ensure your home stays in good condition year-round
Here’s a breakdown of tasks to consider for each season:
Inspect Roof: Check for any damage from winter and repair as needed
Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear out debris to prevent water damage
Service HVAC: Have a professional service your heating and cooling system
Check Detectors: Replace batteries and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Inspect and Repair Windows: Look for leaks and drafts, replace caulking or weather stripping if necessary
Prepare Lawn Equipment: Get your lawn mower and other equipment ready for summer use
Inspect and Paint Exterior: Look for chipped paint and touch up as needed to protect wood and siding
Check Deck and Patios: Clean, repair, and seal if necessary.
Maintain Landscape: Keep up with mowing, weeding, and watering practices
Clean or Replace HVAC Filters: Ensure your air conditioning runs efficiently
Check Plumbing: Look for leaks and address any issues with hoses or sprinklers.
Inspect Attic and Basement: Check for any signs of pests or mold.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts Again: Prepare for rainfall and melting snow
Winterize AC and Prepare Heating System: Cover your AC unit, and get the heating system checked
Drain and Store Hoses: Prevent hoses from freezing and bursting.
Seal Gaps and Leaks: Add weather stripping to doors and windows.
Check Fireplace: Have your chimney cleaned and inspected before use
Inspect Insulation: Make sure insulation is adequate to save on heating costs
Inspect Roof and Gutters: Ensure they are not burdened with heavy snow or ice.
Prevent Pipes from Freezing: Keep your home warm and insulate pipes.
Check Heating System: Regularly ensure it is operating smoothly
Reverse Ceiling Fans: Have them rotate clockwise to help distribute heat evenly
Check Detectors Again: Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.
Audit Energy Efficiency: Check for drafts and heat loss, and adjust as necessary
BUYING AND SELLING TIPS IN THIS MARKET
No matter your goal, it’s hard to time the market If you are buying, try researching your options and reviewing your financial information If you are selling look for ways to add value to your home
Don’t try to time the market. You might look at trends, but waiting for the perfect time might leave you waiting for a day that may never come. But, still respect your gut if it’s telling you to wait
Understand your risks Don’t go into a mortgage you’re already looking to refinance Have a back up stash for unexpected and immediate expenses They’re inevitable.
Focus on your credit Building solid credit not only improves your chance to get a loan, but also helps with those impossiblefeeling interest rates
For Buyers!
For Sellers!
For sellers, use your network. Talk to your friends and family about your desire to sell and your timeline. Ask them if they might know a buyer. It’s also time to check your local market to decide if selling in your specific area is working for others at the moment Nicholasville is growing quickly, so keep that in mind when deciding if it’s time to buy or sell
Get an objective set of eyes to give you honest feedback about your home Is it modernized? Is your decor shabbier than chic? Think from a buyer’s perspective. It’s a new home for them, so it should feel fresh, neutral, clean, and updated. Then, talk to your real estate agent about improvements and staging suggestions, as they are generally more keen to buyers’ must-haves and ideals They work with buyers all day every day, and can give you great advice about selling and listing
Hire a pro to take listing photos Not all photos are created equally, and with market competition, you want your home to stand out Remember, the photos are a buyer’s first impression of your home. Lastly, stay inspired, and don’t stop trying and dreaming.
"Stay inspired. Don’t stop trying and dreaming."
Research and Gather Recommendations
Start by researching local contractors to find those who specialize in the work you need Utilize online resources like Yelp, Angie’s List, or Google Reviews to read customer testimonials and ratings Asking friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations can also lead you to reliable professionals This initial research helps you create a shortlist of potential contractors
Get Multiple Estimates
Contact each contractor on your shortlist to schedule an inhome estimate. Having several contractors provide bids can give you a clear picture of what your project should reasonably cost and what each contractor offers for that price Ensure these estimates are detailed and include the cost of materials, labor, and any other expenses so you can make an informed comparison
Once you have a few candidates, check that each contractor has the necessary licenses to work in your area Verify that they also have liability insurance and workers’ compensation to protect you in case of accidents on your property Additionally, ask for references from recent jobs and follow up with those references to inquire about their experiences with the contractor and the quality of work performed
You might hire a contractor for various reasons, typically related to construction, renovation, or repair projects Here are some common scenarios:
1 Home Renovation and Remodeling: If you're planning to remodel your kitchen, bathroom, or undertake a full home renovation, a contractor would oversee the project, manage subcontractors, and ensure that the work meets local building codes and standards
Ask All of Your Questions
Meeting face-to-face or having a detailed phone conversation with potential contractors gives you a sense of their professionalism and the way they conduct their business Ask questions about their experience with projects similar to yours, their approach to potential challenges, and how they plan to schedule the work Discussing these details can help you gauge their reliability and commitment to your project
2 Building a New Home: Contractors are essential for new home construction, coordinating everything from laying the foundation to the final touches like painting and installing fixtures.
3 Roof Repair or Replacement: Contractors specializing in roofing can handle the repair or replacement of your roof, ensuring it's done safely and effectively
4. Adding Extensions or Additional Rooms: If you need more space in your home, a contractor can construct new rooms or extensions, handling the design, permits, and construction.
5 Plumbing and Electrical Work: For significant plumbing or electrical updates, a general contractor or a specialized subcontractor can ensure the work is compliant with local codes and performed safely
6. Exterior Projects: This includes installing siding, windows, and doors, or building decks and patois, which not only improve the aesthetic appeal of your home but can also enhance its energy efficiency.
7 Disaster Recovery and Repairs: Post-disaster reconstruction or repairs due to water, fire, or storm damage often require professional contractors to restore your property safely
Hiring a professional contractor ensures that your projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to a high standard, often backed by guarantees or warranties.

Embracing Mental
Well-Being: The Imperative of Prioritizing Mental Health
In today's fast-paced world, the importance of mental health is often overshadowed by the hustle of everyday life Yet, as society becomes more aware of mental health issues, it's clear that making it a priority is not just beneficial, but essential for maintaining overall well-being and life satisfaction
Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices Despite its importance, mental health is frequently taken for granted, with many brushing aside issues until they become severe.
Prioritizing mental health isn’t just about seeking help when problems arise; it's about maintaining a balanced state of mind on a daily basis. The stigma surrounding mental health issues can often prevent individuals from seeking help. Overcoming this stigma and recognizing mental health as equally important as physical health is crucial. Societal attitudes are shifting, and there is a growing recognition that everyone can benefit from focusing on mental health, regardless of whether they suffer from a specific mental disorder.
1. Regular Exercise: Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, known as 'feel-good' hormones, which can lift moods and act as a natural counter to stress and anxiety
2. Balanced Diet: Nutrition plays a significant role in mental health. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients can enhance brain function and overall mood
3 Adequate Sleep: Sleep and mental health are closely connected Ensuring seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night can significantly improve mental clarity and emotional regulation
4 Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices help maintain a moment-to-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, which can reduce stress and enhance overall emotional resilience.
5 Social Connections: Building strong, positive relationships with friends and family can provide emotional support and buffer against mental health issues.
6 Seek Professional Help: Regular check-ins with a mental health professional can be beneficial, much like routine visits to a physical doctor. These professionals can provide strategies and tools to manage mental health more effectively.
In conclusion, prioritizing mental health is crucial for a fulfilling life It’s about fostering an environment where mental well-being is nurtured and sustained. As we begin to treat our mental health with the same urgency and respect as our physical health, we pave the way for a happier, healthier society Embracing and prioritizing mental health not only enhances individual lives but also enriches our communities, making them stronger and more resilient.
3 Signs it Might be Skin Cancer
Itching
It’s normal for skin to be irritated, but moles or marks that are constantly itching need to be checked. Also be aware of any itching on old spots that wasn’t prevalent before (to your knowledge).
A sore that does not heal at all
The sore in question can be translucent (see through), shiny and pink or even pearly white or red. It may feel sore, rough and have raised edges. pay attention to normal healing times, and if your sore doesn’t heal up in a maximum of 4 weeks, it’s time to get that checked out.
It changes in size, shape, or color
Some things like skin cancer can fly under the radar until it’s too late. If you have a place on. your skin that changes in size (bigger), shape (irregular), or color (any change), you should make an appointment to see your dermatologist.
The Final Touch Wedding Planning
By: Heather Martin 27 Social
There are a million articles floating around about what to do when you get engaged and how to start planning the wedding of your dreams. But, what about when you ’ re a month away from the big day? The wedding is planned and you have a great vendor team, but have you forgotten anything? Let me share some things to think about to help you put the final touches on your wedding to make sure no detail is missed and the day goes smoothly!
1 Check in with guests who have not sent in their RSVP It’s not safe to assume they aren’t coming because you have not heard from them
2 Think about your tables and not just the ones where guests are eating Tables for your gifts, guest book, buffet, and others can be easy to forget about Don’t forget table linens as well for these!
3 Have a plan in place for your wedding party before the rehearsal The rehearsal will go much smoother if you know when each person is walking and where they are standing versus figuring it out during the rehearsal time
4 Give your photographer a photo list This should include names of family members that you want in family photos and other groups you would like formally photographed together. Include any detail shots you would like on that list as well.
5. You have dinner covered, but make sure you have a plan for breakfast and lunch as well. It will be a long day, so plan to have it delivered or someone assigned to pick up.
6. Make sure someone knows how to bustle your dress.
7. Timelines for the day of are essential and you need one! Make sure everyone involved in the execution of the day has a copy. Make sure to have someone available who can execute the timeline.
8. Relax and enjoy this special time! There is a big to do list and many things to think about, but at the end of it all, you’ll be married!
The New Retirement
By Morgan Murray
Once seen as winding down, retirement is in the midst of a transformation Now, this phase of life is brimming with new choices, new purpose and new challenges. For pre-retirees and current retirees, research shows that there should be more intention on how to approach these years for ultimate success Let’s break down four of the main elements to consider ahead of or during this transition.
Health
Consider this thought: in 20 years, you will wish you were as healthy and capable as you are today. Lifespans are as long as ever, but what about healthspan? Healthspan is the number of years you’ll live with vitality. While it’s never too late to make changes in your health, try to start closing the gap now between what you know you “should” do and what habits you choose on a daily basis.
Family
Sixty-one percent of retirees cite “relationships with loved ones ” as the most important contributor to their identity in retirement. Having close friends and family is linked to greater well-being and life expectancy. Prepare for the transition by communicating clearly with friends and family your hopes and preferences for retirement. Retirement is not a solo journey!
Purpose
What is going to get you out of bed in the morning? This question is a great way to start the discovery toward your joy in retirement. Retirees with a strong sense of purpose are happier and healthier. The average person 65+ has over 7 hours of leisure time a day - and studies reveal a dramatic increase in consuming television, social media and other forms of entertainment in this age group. Consider, instead, other fulfilling ways to spend the days: volunteering with a non-profit, engaging in a faith community, working part-time somewhere fun, or trying something new!
Finances
Retirement is likely the most expensive purchase in life. Over 75% of pre-retirees haven’t calculated what they will need to live comfortably. The reality is that most Americans are not saving adequately for a phase of life that can last over 30 years. Ask yourself this question: What would financial peace of mind in retirement look like for you? Financial security in retirement will not provide lasting and meaningful purpose, but it will allow you the freedom to live the life you envision. Start a conversation with a financial advisor to begin your saving journey or to get a reality-check of how prepared you are for this exciting phase of life!

A Noteworthy Family
By Jonathan L. Smith, Kentucky Historian
Samuel H Woodson was born in Virginia in 1777 but later moved to Kentucky, settling in Jessamine County He was a member of the bar and is credited with having the first law office in Nicholasville and being the first clerk of the Jessamine County Circuit Court He was also an represented the county as a member of the United States House of Representatives and later the Kentucky Legislature. He was fifty years old when he did in 1827 at Chuamiere du Praire, (translated from French as “Cottage in the Meadow”) the showcase Jessamine County estate built by his father-in-law David Meade, and located on what is today known as Catnip Hill Road.
Some of his many sons followed him into the practice of law and in public service His son Tucker Woodson (1804-1874) was a lawyer and member of both the Kentucky house and senate; David Meade Woodson (1806-1877) was also a lawyer and politician, practicing law and holding offices in both Kentucky and Illinois; Richard Kidder Woodson (1810-1889) was a farmer but was appointed U.S. Deputy Assessor by President Lincoln during the Civil War; Robert Everard Woodson (1817-1872) was also an lawyer and later judge in Kansas City, Missouri; and George Nicholas Woodson (1821-1846) who died young before being able to match the accomplishments of his brothers, and who was named for the man under whom his father studied law and for whom Nicholasville was named, George Nicholas There is also Samuel Hughes Woodson, Jr. (1815-1881), another lawyer in the family. He relocated to Missouri after graduating from Transylvania College, where he practiced law and represented his district in the U.S. House of Representatives until the outbreak of the Civil War. As a Southern sympathizer, he left Missouri, probably for Texas, but later returned. There is a home on the National Register of Historic Places in Independence, Missouri, known as the Woodson/Sawyer House that once belonged to Samuel Woodson If one has the occasion to visit Independence, Missouri, check out the home built by own Samuel Woodson located at 1604 W. Lexington Street. Samual Woodson, Sr. did not live to see firsthand the accomplishments of his children, but one could guess that he would not have been surprised. As they say, the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Eye care for the whole family!

The hot summer months are just around the corner and the City of Nicholasville has a new venue for children of all ages to enjoy an innovative recreational splash pad at Lake Mingo. We hope the Lake Mingo Splash Pad will be one of the most popular summertime attractions for our community’s youth. The updated Riney B. Aquatic Center is open, and ready for your family to enjoy. I encourage everyone to visit the Riney B. Pool to enjoy the renewed facility, which our Jessamine County/Nicholasville Parks and Recreation have worked hard to prepare. The pool-operatinghours are Monday through Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday 1pm to 7pm.
We have many great things happening within our city too! In an effort to encourage a vibrant downtown Nicholasville and to fully support our business community, the City of Nicholasville has introduced the Small Business Property Incentive Grant Program. The City Commission has allocated $500,000 for small businesses in the current fiscal year. Our hope is to encourage redevelopment of structures already in place, increase downtown commerce, and position the downtown in a positive light. Our businesses and citizens share these goals and visions. Together, we will build an even better Nicholasville!
Most recently, you have seen us complete the $1 million, phase one multi-purpose field thatincludes a dual football/soccer field and two softball diamonds at John Preece Park. The Nicholasville City Commission has also set aside an additional $4 million for a stateof-the-art Community Recreation Complex that will complement the multi-purpose field. Nicholasville is committed to invest in facilities and programs that will enhance our citizen’s quality of life. We are hopeful that with the support of our community partners we can bring this beautiful vision to life for our citizens. Small Town Livin’ Is the Life for Me
By Max Vanderpool
I’m an introvert. I’ll admit it. I recharge by having time ALONE. Which means that I expend energy being with other people. Now some folks will try to tell you that they’re an introvert because they HATE people. That’s not introversion; that’s work to be done with a certified therapist. Introverts LOVE people – we just need time ALONE so that we can bring the best version of ourselves to others.
Which is why, sometimes, I find shopping at Kroger or Wal-Mart challenging. I’m also a man, and I want to get in, get the list, and get out –quickly. But in a small town, if you ’ ve been involved with stuff and you ’ ve had kids who were involved with stuff, you know some folks. And they ALSO shop at Kroger and Wal-Mart. Which means you ’ re going to have to stop and exchange what I call “Southern pleasantries.” “How are you doing these days?” “What about the kids?” “What are they up to?” “Did you hear that so-and-so had cancer?” “Oh, my goodness.” You know the drill. Well, after my wife’s stroke in late February, I find that WE have been the subject of conversation and prayers with virtually EVERYONE I know in town (and then some). So, I get stopped everywhere. “How’s Jenny?” “Do you need anything?” “We’re praying for you, you know.” In the past, I found getting stopped like that incredibly frustrating. These days, I find it tremendously encouraging and rewarding. You belong. And people (do really) care. Everyone matters. So, you can keep New York and Los Angeles. I’ll stick with Nicholasville, thank you. Small town livin’ is the life for me. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
