Editor's Note

Publisher,Editor-in-Chief

It's blue skies, cookouts, catching fireflies, swimming, and time outdoors with family and friends season. Summer is where memories are made and pulled from later. Memories of jumping off the tire swing into the river, or of spreading a blanket into a truck bed and eating pizza, waiting for the fireworks to start. Summertime in Kentucky is unlike anything else. It is real. It's grassroots. It's the smell of the bluegrass this time of year. If you know you know. It's time for togetherness and Jessamine County is bursting with events for your family this season. Starting with the Kentucky Wine and Vine Fest, and free concerts at Rock Fence Park. Try going to Wilmore's Main Street for their events sprinkled throughout the summer. Remember, not just at Christmas, but all year, it's more important than ever to shop locally. You help the local economy and help keep jobs at home. When you shop locally, a real person does a happy dance. Take time to explore our local boutiques, insurance agencies, restaurants and more! Happy Summer!

As I walk through the new police station on my way back to Chief Justice's office for this interview, I am greeted by a few officers I know, and it's evident that the culture is just as fresh as the paint

A lot of this was exactly what Todd Justice set out to do 5 years ago when he became chief of police in Nicholasville It's not every day that when someone retires, you can physically see the changes they've made, and in this case, these positive changes are what legacies are made of

Of course, when I asked Justice to tell me about himself and his 25 years in police work, he had a hard time finding words, because his humility wouldn't let him brag on himself But, with a little coaching, I was able to get a few tidbits out of him that I found not only interesting, but inspiring

I found out that he went to EKU for police academy in 1998, 25 years ago After he got out, got into patrol for 3 years, and took an opportunity in investigations He was internally promoted to sergeant in 2010, and lieutenant in 2013 Justice spent 15 years in Investigations and was appointed Assistant Chief in 2016 He knew that if he could be chief, he wanted to make a change He wanted to get a new building, retain officers, and put the police department more imbedded in the community He wanted his officers to be seen as people and community members, not just "robots in cars " So, after he was named chief of police 5 years ago, he set out on a mission to leave the department even a little better than how he found it

Speaking of his family was like lighting a fire in the heart of Todd Justice

He found a new wind when talking about his wife and 12 year old son His desire to be home with his family led to his decision to implement 12-hour shifts, and give his officers a better environment He wants to keep his staff, public, and city happy But, now is his time

Lastly, I asked him what he would want to say to everyone: "Thank you Thank you for the opportunity, your trust, and support It's been fun and I've learned a lot I'm grateful for the opportunity to help make this department the best in the state in my opinion "

Volunteering time to charities can have a positive impact on both the organization and the volunteer. It can help the charity achieve its goals, provide meaningful experiences and personal fulfillment for the volunteer, and contribute to building stronger communities.

There are many ways to volunteer, including:

Joining a local organization or non-profit

Participating in community service events

Volunteering at a hospital or nursing home

Helping out at a food bank or homeless shelter

Mentoring a child or young adult

Tutoring or teaching a skill to others

Donating time or resources to a cause you care about

Remember to always research and verify the legitimacy of the organization before volunteering your time or resources.

Summer + Southern Recipe

I remember pulling vegetables out of my grandparents' garden each summer, rubbing most of the dirt off on my pants, and eating them right then and there There is something nostalgic about summer for me It was bare feet on the cool grass, windows open, front porch sitting, and staying out until we just couldn't see any more. So, each summer, I pull from these memories. I long to taste a fresh, warm tomato that was just on the vine in the sunshine, or the endless wait on the cucumbers to turn into actual pickles. So, as I sit here and watch my mom and brother clean off the grill, I think about the recipes from my family, and this one sticks out to me as a long-time, old-fashioned favorite When my mom first saw this page, she exclaimed, "Oh! Strawberry Rhubarb Pie! We used to make that all time time!" and she's right Plus, my grandmother gave me the recipe, and I'm here to share that with you today! Enjoy with your family!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups diced rhubarb

1 1/2 cups sliced strawberries

1 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

2 prepared pie crusts

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

In a large bowl, mix together the rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and cinnamon until well combined. Spoon the mixture into a 9-inch pie dish lined with one of the prepared pie crusts.

Dot the top of the filling with small pieces of unsalted butter. Cover the pie with the other prepared pie crust, crimping the edges to seal.

Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Let the pie cool completely before serving. Enjoy!

KENTUCKY'S FIRST HIGHWAY TUNNEL

Modern road building has bypassed it in the same way that modern road have bypassed so many small towns in Kentucky, but Kentucky’s first highway tunnel is still there for the curious traveler or historian Boone Tunnel, immediately north of the Highway 68 bridge over the Kentucky River in Jessamine County was the first highway tunnel built in the state At the time of its completion, a motorist heading south would exit the tunnel and then cross directly over the Brooklyn Bridge into Mercer County. The state hired William Lutes to construct the road north from the Brooklyn Bridge, including the tunnel cut into the limestone and measured about onehundred fifty feet long, twenty feet tall, and twenty feel wide. The contract was awarded in the summer of 1923 and the tunnel was open by the summer of 1924 Lutes was originally from Beattyville but lived in Fayette County his whole adult life He built many roads throughout the state, including the seventeen mile long Cumberland Falls Highway in Whitley County in 1932 That was the first permanently improved road in the then-new Falls state park

Boone Tunnel would be used as part of Highway 68 for about thirty years until the Brooklyn Bridge collapsed while a truck was crossing it on November 30, 1953. When the replacement bridge was completed in December 1955, the tunnel was eliminated from the road.

RECEIVING OUR HEALING – GOING TO WAR ON OUR KNEES

In Matthew 8:3, Jesus, (Yahweh Rapha) tells the man with leprosy, I am willing – be healed! Since one of the most powerful passages within the Christian faith found in Hebrews 13:8 declares that, “He is the same today, yesterday, and forever”, we can believe that God wants us to have the abundant life He promised in John 10:10. Within this 500 page resource, Dr. Holland provides a vast amount of evidence explaining God’s authority and how the blood atonement of Christ along with our fervent faith and obedience work together to manifest miracles for His glory! As the author of “A lifestyle of Worship –Living in the awareness of God’s Presence” and “Convictions and Considerations – Encouragement for the Soul” Holland now relays to us this much needed inspirational digest of God’s desires concerning spiritual, physical, and emotional healing.
