The Lost Art of Being Neighborly
Being a good neighbor is something most of us don’t give a whole lot of thought to. We live our day-today lives, and usually only notice our neighbors when they AREN’T being a good neighbor. Here is a list of a few things you can do to ensure that you are being respectful of those living around you.
Keep it quiet - you don’t have to wait for a late hour. Even if you have guests over in the middle of the day on a Saturday, be mindful of the noise level.
2. Maintain your curb appeal - make sure you are keeping up with your yard and landscaping, watching for any unwanted trash or messy yard work. This helps the overall look of the neighborhood as well, not just your own home.
Be a mindful pet owner - make sure your pet doesn’t venture into a neighbor’s yard for their bathroom breaks, or have them off-leash without a fence.
3 Know when to walk away - it’s funny, but sometimes neighbors can be TOO chatty, especially when you are just sitting on your front porch trying to relax. Give a quick “Hi!” and if you want to talk more, tell them you’d love to get together soon to catch up. Easy.

Raised beds are an enhancement to your home garden. They provide better drainage for plants and prevent waterlogging. They can even control soil compaction, which in turn leads to healthier plant roots. Most gardeners look for a mix of healthy and beautiful plants to look at. The raised beds offer an
aesthetic look to the flower or vegetable garden, by giving it height dimension, and the wood offers contrast to the blooms. It enhances the overall design of your garden.
Some gardeners enjoy raised beds because they make accessing the plants a bit easier.
If you have mobility issues, raised beds might be the answer you’ve been looking for
Raised beds are also a great way to extend the gardening season, as the soil can be kept warmer starting in the spring since it’s not buried below ground
Another added benefit to raised beds is that they can keep some unwanted pests away. Because the beds aren’t directly on the ground, it makes burrowing a little harder for pests and moles.
I hope you’re inspired to try your own raised bed this growing season to add beauty, easier maintenance, and optimal growing conditions.

How to Protect Yourself and Loved Ones
From Senior Fraud, and Scams on the Elderly
With the technology advancements turning over so fast, scammers are getting more and more savvy when it comes to fraudulent calls and emails. Sometimes, even those of us who know about these types of scams can be fooled due to email addresses closely resembling ones actually used by the legitimate companies, and calls from seemingly local numbers. Here are a few ways to help yourself or your loved ones avoid being scammed out of personal information, assets, and money.
First, alert your parents to red flags they might see come up. For example, someone asking
for a money wire for payment or a big prize is likely scam. Another red flag is calls from “government agencies” such as the IRS, Medicare and Social Security Administration. They will not call or email you, and only communicate through mail.
Be wary of numbers you or your parents don’t have saved in contacts. It’s often best to not answer, and listen to the voice message after. As a general rule of thumb, if someone claiming to be a family member or limited time offerings requesting fast cash is more than likely a scam.
Secondly, avoid spam calls by
blocking unknown numbers, and using a refusal script if you don’t feel comfortable simply hanging up. Always monitor financial accounts and be careful when looking at emails or social media messages or calls. Stay safe, be smart, and if in doubt, don’t reply at all, and then ask for help.

EAST Cheer Wins BIG
3rd at Nationals!
The East Jessamine Jaguars Coed Cheer Team has a lot to celebrate as they come home from Orlando with a jaw dropping 3rd place title win from the UCA National Championship for small division coed teams February 9 - 12! The team only missed the number 2 spot by a fraction of a point.
A big deal for a group of small town cheerleaders, East Jessamine High School coed cheer team now knows what it feels to bring home national-winning hardware back to Jessamine County. The competition was held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. Teams from all over the United States come together the second weekend of February each year to compete for the National title in their Division. A video on East’s Facebook page shows teachers and students watching the results with bated breath, and a rush of excitment once East was called for 3rd.
The 7 seniors on this year’s squad have a lot to be proud of before they move on to the next chapter. The memory of winning out of so many teams in the nation will be with them for the rest of their lives. Jessamine County welcomed the squad with warmth and excitement as they made their way back home. The royal welcome from a county that beams with pride as our champions return.
East racked up an impressive score of 82.6, not far behind the second and first place winners. This is East Jessamine history and students and staff enjoy the victory. These seven seniors offered this team experience and motivation going into the championship, and it certainly paid off for our Jaguars this year!

CampNelson
By Jonathan L. Smith, Kentucky historian
There are 155 national cemeteries in 42 states and Puerto Rico, as well as 34 soldiers lots and memorial sites. There are seven such cemeteries in Kentucky including Cave Hill in Louisville, Danville, Lebanon, Lexington, Mill Springs in Nancy, Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Evergreen in Southgate, and of course Jessamine County’s Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
Camp Nelson is known for the cemetery now, but it was an important federal military camp during the Civil War named in honor of Mason County native General William “Bull” Nelson, who was killed in 1862 by Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis. It is important to point out that this Jefferson C. Davis was a union officer, not the President of the Confederate States with a similar name. The killing took place at Louisville Galt House hotel. General Nelson was Brigadier General Davis’s superior officer. Davis had asked Nelson for arms for the men in his company. When Nelson asked Davis how many men he had, Davis replied, “about twenty-five hundred.”
It infuriated Nelson that Davis could say exactly how many men were in his command, and Nelson ordered him to report to General Wright at Cincinnati. On the morning of September 29, 1862, Davis returned to Louisville and approached Nelson at the Galt House. After avoiding him for a bit, Nelson finally said to Davis, “What, do you want to insult me, you damn pup?” and at the same time slapped Davis in the face.
Davis said nothing to Nelson but turned to an officer nearby and asked for his pistol, which Davis used to shoot Nelson in the abdomen. Nelson lived for about thirty minutes after being shot and was completely conscious except for about the last three minutes. During those twenty-seven minutes of consciousness, during the waning minutes of his life, General Nelson thought of nothing but his salvation. He requested that a clergyman be summoned and then asked for the rite of baptism prior to his demise.
Due to a shortage of experienced officers in the throes of the war, nothing ever came of court-martial or manslaughter charges against Jeff Davis. He was back with his command within four or five weeks after the killing and played a big part in the remainder of the war and the army’s role in unifying the country after the war.
Initially buried in Cave Hill cemetery in Louisville, General Nelson’s remains were removed in 1863 to his desired burial ground at Camp Dick Robinson in Garrard Country. He created that union fortification in 1861 on the property of landowner Richard “Dick” Robinson, where the turnpike split to go to Danville or Lancaster (today the intersection of Highways 27 and 34).
Robinson donated an acre of land and $1,000 for a monument to General Nelson upon hearing that it was the wish of General Nelson to one day be buried there. Eventually, General Nelson’s remains were removed and reinterred to his native Maysville. Which means the man for whom Camp Nelson National Cemetery is named was buried in three different places, and none of them was Camp Nelson.

The resurrection of Jesus
is a central belief in Christianity, signifying his triumph over death. According to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried in a tomb, but on the third day, he rose from the dead, and the stone was rolled away. This event is celebrated as Easter and is foundational to the Christian faith, symbolizing hope, redemption, and the promise of eternal life for believers. The resurrection of Jesus is seen as a powerful demonstration of God's love and power, inspiring Christians around the world for centuries.

The City and County are also looking forward to finishing a much needed renovation of a historical building in our downtown This building simply referred to as the “Old Jail”, will now house the Nicholasville-Wilmore, Jessamine County Joint Tourism. Spring-cleaning season is upon us, which calls to mind one of my favorite shows, “Hoarders.” I’ve long been fascinated with this show and the psychology behind hoarding. In fact, I’m so intrigued by the condition I decided to write a cozy mystery novel, set in Kentucky, called Dumpster Dying; it’s about a hoarder, Birdie Harper, who lives with her husband’s ghost and becomes entangled in solving mysteries. Of course, Birdie doesn’t believe she’s a hoarder. She considers herself a finder of lost treasures, and the only thing she loves more than a yard sale is to dive into a dumpster behind her favorite hobby store. Unfortunately, during one of her dives, Birdie discovers the body of one of her acquaintances. With the help of her husband’s ghost (Walter), and her long-suffering sister, Oda Dean, Birdie is determined to find the killer. However, the murderer is paying attention and, if Birdie’s not careful, the next body in a dumpster could be her own!
Dumpster Dying is the first book in the Hazardous Hoarding series. Book 2, Killer Cache, will release in the fall of 2024. Get your copy of the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold. You can find Michelle at www.michellebennington.com.
Born and raised in the beautiful Bluegrass state of Kentucky, Michelle Bennington developed a passion for books early on that has progressed into a mild hoarding situation and an ever-growing to-read pile. When she’s not creating contemporary or historical fictional worlds full of mysteries, you can find her reading, touring historic sites, or engaging in a wide range of arts and crafts.

Cole Wiley
“Study hard and do good in school.”
A good student possesses a combination of key qualities that contribute to their success in academia. Firstly, good students are highly motivated and display a strong sense of determination towards their studies. They set clear goals for themselves and work diligently to achieve them. Additionally, good students exhibit excellent time management skills, prioritizing their tasks effectively to meet deadlines and balance their academic workload. They are proactive in seeking help when needed, whether it be from teachers, peers, or resources available to them. Furthermore, good students demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks. They engage actively in class discussions, ask insightful questions, and strive for a deep understanding of the subject matter. Overall, a good student embodies a positive attitude, resilience, and a passion for learning that drives their academic success.
These characteristics embody Cole Wiley When the community was asked to vote for an outstanding student, Cole’s name was quick to the list, and voted on enough times to win the feature Cole is surrounded by love and support, but it doesn’t seem to go undeserved Along with being a good student, Cole has personal characteristics that make his mom proud Here’s what she had to say about her son:
To know Cole Wiley is to love him I have never met a soul that could be so warm and inclusive I would describe him as an outdoor child Even at a very young age I could see the enjoyment he gets from just simply being in the outdoors. Cole enjoys fishing, camping, swimming, baseball, football and his one indoor, sport basketball. Often, I am taught lessons from Cole, he is quick to lend a hand in any situation from helping a friend clean up a spilled drink to including a child that seems a little down. I call Cole my old soul because his gentle nature is totally just who he is. Cole surprised us with his strong desire to be baptized this past December. I am beyond blessed to be his mother and I say it all the time, if I had known he was going to be this much fun, I would have had him sooner.
