AMY BASTIN Amy Bastin is the Coordinator of Lincoln County Service Center at Lincoln County High School. She is also the high school’s cheerleading coach and is a 1988 LCHS graduate where she was the senior class President.

Amy received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Eastern Kentucky University before teaching school in Guam, where her husband, Jim, was stationed in the United States Air Force.

When Jim was transferred to Colorado Springs, Amy worked in private business. Upon their return to Lincoln County, Amy worked the front desk at LCHS before assuming her current position.

In her role as Coordinator of the Youth Service Center, Amy strives to enhance students’ abilities to succeed in school by assisting them and their families to meet the needs that impact the education process. In her role as Cheerleading Coach, Amy interacts with students in an athletic setting. Helping them to be more physically fit and more confident, while instilling the fundamental concepts of discipline, responsibility, and teamwork.

Amy and Jim live in Stanford and have three grown children, Toby, Tyler, and Tinsley. They also have a granddaughter, Loralai Ruth, by son Toby and his wife Hayley.

Amy is the youngest of six children, and only daughter, of Calvin and Ruth Smith, who were very active and community-minded members of our county. She has continued their good works and is a positive influence on many of the children of Lincoln County, making her one of our county’s leading ladies.

ANDREA MILLER I guess you could say, it was providence that brought my family to Lincoln County.

Although we are not “from” here, we have lived in Stanford 35 Years. My husband and I have started and now own multiple-business ventures in Lincoln County.

During the first years we were concentrating on raising our three kids, sports school and church activities occupied our days. As the kids got older, I sensed the need to give back to this great community!

I started working at the Lincoln County Chamber in December 2002. That is when I started to understand and realize what a great community we have. I was able to see first-hand how business and citizens alike, are willing to invest their time and talents in this great community.

This spirit is what keeps me going! Each day I try to not only make this home of mine a little better, but also spread the news about the greatest small town in Kentucky!

When I am not busy with the Chamber, I am also the Office Manager for the radio station, WPBK and Sales & Marketing Consultant for Lincoln County Living ™ Magazine.

In my spare time I enjoy painting, baking and competitive dancing! I am Married to Dr. Jay Miller, we have 3 gown children and 3 fabulous grandkids!

ANGELA CORRELL The rich history of Lincoln County has served as inspiration for me in both my writing and business life. I was born and raised within ten miles of Stanford, so it has always felt like home to me. The beautiful landscape provided the perfect backdrop to create a story about a multi-generation family in my trilogy of fiction books.

The charm and history of the community also makes a lovely setting to invite guests to visit and enjoy a taste of small-town life through our hospitality services. Guests come seeking restoration and relaxation, escaping hectic daily life.

Creating beautiful spaces and experiences for this rejuvenation in turn revitalizes buildings, creates jobs, and impacts our local economy, thanks to the work of all our team members.

My hope is that we can serve the community by helping to create a place of peace and flourishing for visitors and locals alike, to have a place where businesses can succeed, giving opportunities to our children and grandchildren. I am incredibly grateful to this community for all it has given to me in the last 25 years.

Angela Correll is the author of four books, including a fiction trilogy and an upcoming memoir, Restored in Tuscany, to be released by Harvest House on March 5, 2024. She is also the co-founder and designer for Wilderness Road Hospitality, a suite of businesses that include The Stanford Inn, the Bluebird restaurant, Mama DeVechio’s Pizzeria, Esther’s Wellhouse spa, and Kentucky Soaps & Such.

ANGELA TODD “You know you’ve had a good day when you’ve learned something new” is something I heard quite a lot growing up. My Dad, Bob DeZarn, instilled a love of knowledge, learning and a sense of curiosity in me from a young age. My Mom, Julie, was a stay at home mom who thrived on volunteering.

Some of my earliest memories are of me tagging along as we raised money for the Heart and Lung Associations. Both of my parents instilled in me the importance of taking pride in your community through hard work and giving back. I was blessed to marry a man, Jason, that shares these and many more of values my parents instilled in me.

Jingle Bell Jog 5K run/walk for Alzheimer’s is truly a community effort and could not happen without the countless volunteers who work so very hard to make it happen. As my Dad’s battle with Alzheimer’s Disease progressed I knew there was nothing I could do to save him but I had to do something to try and to not make his struggle be in vain. Jingle Bell Jog was born to raise money and awareness of the disease.

I’ve been fortunate to be involved with wonderful organizations like the Sam Singleton Educational Fund, the Lincoln County Chamber Board, the Lincoln County Distinguished Young Women program and the Miss America Organization to name a few. With this involvement I hope I have given back to the community that has given me and so many others so much. Just like I was taught as a child.

CAROL HILL Director Ky Fresh Harvest Carol Hill is a native of Stanford and Lincoln County, Kentucky, but feels just as much at home in her mother’s native state of Texas. After graduating from law school at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, Ms. Hill returned to her hometown to practice law. Ms. Hill was a local prosecutor for 17 years and a municipal attorney for nearly 15 years. She served as the City Attorney for Stanford, Kentucky and Hustonville, Kentucky as well as representing the McKinney Water District.

When Ms. Hill was contacted about the greenhouse project, she embraced it enthusiastically and strongly advocated to bring the project to her community. Today, She is a director with Kentucky Fresh Harvest actively working to bring the project online.

She is also involved with several other business projects.

In addition to her law degree, Ms. Hill holds a B.B.A. in Finance and a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Kentucky. Since 2009, She has been the President of The Foundation for the Historic McCormack Meetinghouse, Inc,. Ms. Hill is a lifelong member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church.

DIANA HART Diana Hart has been an educator for the past sixteen years. A native of Nicholasville, she began her career in neighboring Garrard County where she progressed from teacher to Assistant Principal to Principal to Director of Pupil Personnel.

She moved to Lincoln County schools in 2020, also as the Director of Pupil Personnel. In August 2023, she was named Lincoln County’s new Assistant Superintendent/Director of Academic Services. The new position assumed some of the job duties of the former Chief Academic Officer position, with the added duties of being the assistant superintendent.

In her new role, she is the highest-ranking female educator in the Lincoln County school system and will take the lead in program development including curriculum, instructional strategies, PHOTO BY PRISCILLA BAIERLEIN

and instructional materials.

When hired, she said, “I want to help provide the best resources possible for our students and staff. I live here, my kids go to school here and I want the best for all Lincoln County students. I will do whatever it takes to help provide that for them."

Diana and her husband Clayton, a graduate of Lincoln County High School, along with their two children, reside in Lincoln County. She enjoys attending and participating in church activities, reading, cooking, spending time with friends and family and traveling in her free time.

As a person playing an important role in the educational development of our children, Diana Hart is a leading lady of our county.

JACKIE PENCE Jackie is originally from Ft. Mitchell, Ky. However, in 1968 she met and married the love of her life – Alfred Pence who was born and raised in Stanford and whose roots are deep here - going back several generations.

Jackie and Alfred met while at the University of Kentucky and moved to Stanford after graduating so Alfred could be the Pharmacist at the family store, Coleman’s Drug Store. Here they raised two children, Bryan and Rebecca.

Jackie began teaching Special Education at Stanford Elementary from 1979 to 1990.

Then she began teaching Physical Education at LCHS until retirement in 2006.

Teaching, leading the 4-H Horse Club, coaching golf at LCHS and working with many other organizations has been so rewarding and has enriched Jackie’s life greatly. The young people Jackie worked with as well as their families have deepened her love of Lincoln County.

Jackie has also been a member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church through the years where she has served in a wide variety of positions.

After retiring from teaching, Jackie began working at Coleman’s Drug Store. While at Coleman’s her job description has been whatever the Pharmacist (remember who that is?) has needed her to do. She believes the main joy of that job has been learning of the rich history of both the Drug Store and Lincoln County while being involved with the people of Lincoln County.

LEE SAUFLEY SWAIN I have always taken great pride in the fact that I was born and have many generations of family from Stanford Kentucky. In 1987, I graduated from Rollins College then went to work with a Property Development Company in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1989, my father and mentor, HR Saufley, called suggesting that I might give the family business a try.

Having grown up in the lumber yard, playing with my father’s drafting table and blueprints it was only natural to move home and carry on the family tradition that he had started in 1963.

Anchored by the American flag, we built our new location in 2009. I have been very blessed to work with my father and son while being surrounded by amazing co-workers and wonderful customers in our community.

I have enjoyed and been extremely gratified by participating in several local organizations. (Habitat for Humanity & Court Appointed Advocates for Children) However, one of my greatest joys was while serving on the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Board (1997-2001). Along with Jayme Phillips, Norb King, Carol Hill, and Beth Hill we were able to partner with the Mayor and Councilmen to help initiate the downtown revitalization program. I had the honor of chairing the first downtown Renaissance Committee & Design Committee. (2000-2002) with Garland Vanhook serving as an advisor and Mary Middleton as our Coordinator. Together we were able to initiate the preservation of our historic downtown area and to help secure grant money for the parking garage and other improvements. It has been more than gratifying to see Wilderness Road Hospitality, First Southern Bank, Lincoln County Chamber, local businesses, churches and officials bring our downtown back to life! Inspired by the restoration of our local Stanford Depot, our Chamber had hoped to preserve the past and prepare for the future. Our ultimate visions were realized when this year’s Chamber hosted the 40th Annual Parade featuring A Great American Film Crew with a special film focusing on Stanford called “Christmas in KY.”

20 Years later our community was being televised on

national television. A vision we dreamed about in 2000.

Currently, I stay busy with daily operations and cordinates design with my father at Builder’s Supply. I enjoy spending time with my family, my husband Mike and my son Caswell. I currently serve as Co-Chairman of the Parent’s Council at Rollins College, Member of Board of Trustee Rollins College, and as a board member for the Kentucky Building Materials Association.

MARTHA BASTIN First, let me start by saying that I love my community. I grew up in Lincoln County with my three heroes: my mom (June King), my dad (Marion Dee) and my great aunt (Martha Scott). They were all very involved in the community. They each played a big part in why I am dedicated to serving the community.

In the past I have been on committees for Relay for Life, Lincoln County Fair and the Crab Orchard 4th of July Celebration. I moved away from LC for 10 years, but nowhere else was HOME. Lincoln County is my home.

I am currently volunteering with the Chamber of Commerce for the Bourbon Chase and on the newly formed committee with the Lincoln County Fair to sponsor Friends with Disabilities Day.

I enjoy making silverware jewelry and have participated in several craft markets at the Depot in Stanford.

I also enjoy gardening and the rewards it brings. I usually plant a garden bigger than what I can consume and enjoy giving vegetables away to those in the community.

I have been farming since 2008 and am a member of the LCCA. It is a passion of mine and I love working with animals. I love my time on the tractor keeping my farm looking good.

As long as I am able, I plan to continue to donate my time and efforts to the betterment of my community.

ROBIN CRAIN My name is Robin (Zanke) Crain. I was born in West Virginia in 1953. After graduation, I pursued my dream of serving in the United States Navy.

After completing boot camp (no easy task), I was assigned to Naval Station Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. I was one of the first eight hand-picked enlisted women to be stationed there. My dream quickly became a reality.

At "Rosy Roads", I served as Yeoman, (Administrative Assistant) to first the Commanding Officer of the Base, and then to the Air Operations Commander. Very different duties, but both equally exciting. Upon completion of my assignment in Puerto Rico, I reinlisted and was next assigned to Naval Air Station Jacksonville as the Command Security Manager Yeoman at a classified aviation training facility which required a high level security clearance. All of my duty assignments were challenging and rewarding. I advanced to First Class Petty Officer (E-6) and was recognized with awards and Letters of Commendation for my service.

While serving in Puerto Rico, I met my soul mate, Joe Crain, a native of Stanford. I truly believe that it was destiny that brought us together, but that is a story for another time. We have recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversay.

In Jacksonville, Joe made a career change from the Navy to begin the Manager Training Program for Winn Dixie, which was headquartered there. Needless to say his parents, Hurl and Peggy (Crain) Durham were thrilled.

In 1977 we moved to Stanford to manage Durham's Grocery & Service Station for his parents. Hurl and Peggy were our mentors and taught us not only how to manage a retail business, but how to serve customers and community. Peggy often reminded me to just treat people the way you want to be treated. "The Golden Rule" These "customers" have become our friends and neighbors; more like family. We share their joys and sorrows; tears and laughter; and they have supported us through our journey. That is community; and I am honored to call Lincoln County my home.

The "Store" has allowed me to serve in various ways. Everything from a family dinner, wedding, class reunion, church homecomings, local fairs, and academic and athletic events. It is rewarding to help out in anyway.

I used my"GI" benefits to attend the Kentucky College of Business 3 nights a week after working all day. My hard work paid off. I earned an Associate's Degree in Small Business Management.

As an independent retailer, I have strived to continue my education by attending as many training and management programs as possible. It is an honor to have our efforts recognized as an outstanding retailer by several organizations.

1 am blessed with great employees, who work very hard at their jobs to represent our values. Also, I am thankful that my son, Craig, is prepared to assume the responsibility of leadership as 3rd generation of Durham's.

Sweater Weather is here!

Who doesn’t love fall? It is a toss-up for me whether fall or spring is my favorite season. It depends on when you ask me. As summer is closing out, I am in the “fall is my favorite” state of mind and I am looking so forward to preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for my family. Ask me in early March, and the answer will likely be Spring.

If you are like me, you have stocked up on fall decor and are ready to decorate indoors and outdoors. This is our fall issue, so let’s go with fall...

Fall brings cooler weather, a new color palette, winter squash, chestnuts, pumpkin everything, and so much more. Thanksgiving comfort foods start to come to mind. It’s time to bring out the single-pot for soups and Dutch-oven recipes for pot roasts and stews and maybe spicy chili on cool afternoons. Thanksgiving Recipes

JUICY TURKEY

1 10 -12 Pound turkey 1 onion peeled and quartered 1 lemon, quartered and 1 Lemon juiced and juice reserved to use with basting 1 apple, quartered Fresh Rosemary Fresh Thyme Fresh Sage Black Pepper Salt to taste Directions: Mix all of the above and place ½ under the skin and rub the other ½ on the outside of the Turkey.

Keep covered. Bake the turkey as directed on the package according to weight. Use thermometer to cook to correct tempature.

THE PERFECT HOLIDAY STUFFING Ingredients 1 c butter (Everything is better with butter) Kerrygold or Land O Lakes recommended 1 1/2 c celery chopped (Organic if possible) Organic has a better flavor 1 1/2 - 2 c yellow onion diced 1 c baby bella Mushrooms chopped to the consistency that you desire 1 pkg. sausage Jimmy Dean mild or hot, 16 oz. Whatever you like

2 1/2 c or more chicken broth may need extra ½ c. at end depending on how moist you like it. Swanson chicken broth or chicken stock will work 1 small pan of day old cornbread or a package of your favorite herb stuffing.

Remember, it is about how moist you like it. Use enough bread or stuffing to keep the consistency the way you like it. Williams Sonoma Focaccia is a good one to use 3/4 c of cranberries (soaked first to soften) 3/4 c of pecans Whole Chestnuts roughly chopped Salt to taste Black Pepper to taste 1/8 tablespoon of sage (if you like)

Instructions Brown your sausage in a pan and set aside. Crumbled is best In a large pot melt your butter. Add onions and celery, cook for until slightly softened and onions translucent Add mushrooms, cook for another minute or two Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Retain some for later if needed Add cooked sausage and stir. Bring to a slight boil again and then add the cornbread and or a bag of stuffing, turn heat off and stir together to fluff. You can also use both, cornbread and stuffing mix together If you want it a bit moister add more chicken broth and let it rest for about for 10 minutes before eating.

MEET THE NEW LINCOLN COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT

Bruce Smith Lincoln County Public Schools hired its twenty-first Superintendent dating back to the creation of the current education system in 1884.

Bruce Smith, a native Lincoln Countian and 1983 graduate of Lincoln County High School, was selected by the elected school board, and began his new job on July 1, 2023.

After high school, Mr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University. He later received a Master of Arts in Education from EKU before obtaining his Rank 1 and certificates for school superintendent, instructional leadership, pupil personnel and middle school principal.

He spent twenty-nine and a half years employed in various roles by the Lincoln County school district, before retiring in 2017. He was a classroom teacher at McKinney Elementary before becoming an administrator, which positions including Supervisor of Migrant Education, Adult Education, Community Education, Extended School Services, Title I, Title II, Title III, Title IV, Textbooks, and the Homeless Program.

He also served as Director of Pupil Personnel, Director of Student Information Systems, Director of School Nutrition, and district contact for Family Resource and Youth Service Centers. He most recently spent time serving on the Lincoln County Board of Education as a board member and chairman, from which he resigned in order to apply for the Superintendent position.

Mr. Smith’s transition into the position has been smooth and he is doing a great job by all accounts.

A Heart for Veterans Carla Loveless Tackett Provides a one-of-a-kind service to local Veterans

AND IS NOW SETTING THE EXAMPLE FOR COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NATION. THE LINCOLN COUNTY COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTER, WHICH SERVES AS A COMMUNITY ACCESS POINT UNDER THE LEXINGTON VET CENTER, HAS BECOME A HUB OF SUPPORT FOR LOCAL VETERANS. THE VET CENTER PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN PLACE SINCE THE 1970’S, AND WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO VIETNAM VETERANS RETURNING HOME AND NEEDING A CONFIDENTIAL PLACE TO TURN TO FOR HELP READJUSTING AND FOR SUPPORT. VET CENTERS PROVIDE A LEVEL OF CONFIDENTIALITY AND COMFORT THAT VETERANS APPRECIATE, CARLA SAID. OLD FASHION PUMPKIN ROLL Ingredients ¾ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice ¼ teaspoon of salt 1 cup pumpkin puree 3 eggs 1 ¼ teaspoon lemon juice 3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar for rolling it out 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¼ cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup confectioners' sugar and more for dusting the top after it has cooled Instructions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch cookie sheet.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice and salt. Stir in pumpkin puree, eggs, and lemon juice. Pour mixture into prepared pan.

Spread the mixture evenly.

Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

Lay a damp linen towel on the counter, sprinkle it with confectioner's sugar, and turn the cake onto the towel.

Carefully roll the towel up (lengthwise) with the cake in it. Place the cake-in-towel on a cooling rack and let it cool for 20 minutes.

Make the icing: In a clean mixing bowl, blend cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and sugar with a wooden spoon or electric mixer.

When the cake has cooled 20 minutes, unroll it and spread icing onto it. Immediately re-roll (not in the towel this time), and wrap it with plastic wrap. Keep the cake refrigerated or freeze it for up to 2 weeks in aluminum foil. Cut the cake in slices just before serving.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’ IN STANFORD?

Stanford is a growing city and with that growth comes construction! Mayor Dalton Miller said there are many construction projects in progress across town.

Atmos Energy is wrapping up the Main Street and Danville Avenue project, according to Miller.

“They’r e replacing all of the gas mains and services because they’v e been in the ground since 1948,” Miller said. The next leg of the Atmos Energy project will take place on Whitley Avenue, Logan Avenue and Miller Street.

The city has also been upgrading its sewer system across town. “The sewer upgrade project is underway. They are currently replacing what they can without disturbing the earth. So we’r e trying to do it with minimal disturbance to the public,” Miller said.

Stanford is welcoming several new businesses to the area. Miller said a new Burger King will be constructed and is expected to open in December. That will be located across from Arby’s on Vincent Drive and U.S. Hwy. 27.

The new Cumberland Family Physicians construction is also well underway, Miller said.

That medical plaza is located next to Walmart in Stanford.

“We have two new daycares that will also be operational soon,” he said. There’s a good reason why Stanford needs more daycares, the Mayor said. “We are predicting an economic boom on the U.S. 150 corridor over the next five years,” he said. “So with an economic boom you need stuff in place. In order to facilitate the businesses, you’v e got to have something to offer the employees.”

Miller is also helping to spread the word about a new monthly veteran’s event called the Monday Muster. The event is held on the fourth Monday of every month at the Wellness Center in Veteran’s Park and is open to any and all veterans and their families. The muster provides free food and fellowship to veterans, thanks to the Lincoln County Vet Center and the Lincoln County Veterans Suicide Prevention Coalition. “It’s an opportunity for veterans to get together in a smaller group. We have on average between 30 and 60 and we’r e seeing new faces all the time,” Miller said.

Miller said Tim Estes has been a huge driving force behind the Monday Muster and Suicide Prevention Coalition and he appreciates all of his hard work and dedication to veterans.

Every October, the City of Stanford looks forward to welcoming relay runners from across the state, and world, as the annual Bourbon Chase makes its way through town.

This year’s Bourbon Chase is a Wizard of Oz theme and will be held Oct. 6 and 7.

“I think the Bourbon Chase is a great opportunity for us to showcase the true hospitality of the City of Stanford,” Miller said.

“As the sign says, ‘We know hospitality, we’v e been doing it since 1775.’”

As Halloween approaches, the annual History and Mystery Walk downtown will be held Oct. 13 and 14. Trick or Treat in Stanford will be Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Miller said it’s never too early to start talking about the annual Christmas Parade.

The Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce has announced the parade will be held Saturday, Dec. 2 beginning at 6 p.m. This year’s theme is “A Christmas Carol.” Forms are now available online for Snow Queen and her court, as well as floats. Editor’s Note: The following is historical fiction from local historian, Jonathan L Smith, using actual facts and real people from a real-life 1890 crime story. The conversations and the reporter, Rex Ramsey, are made up. The rest is real A ruinous tornado hit Louisville on Thursday, March 28, 1890. We got word of it on Friday. I immediately made plans to go visit our state’s largest city to see the destruction firsthand and report back for our Stanford paper.

Marshall Newland suspected him to be the killer. I gathered what facts I could, jotted them down for the office boy so he could deliver them to my editor.

I hurried to the depot and managed to sit down on the train just as it started moving toward Louisville, unusually on time, just before three-thirty in the morning. I later found out that by 9:00 AM, Marshall Newland had worked up the case to charge Teeters.

I went to bed fairly early Saturday night in my rented room at the Myers House Hotel in order to catch the 3:27 AM express Sunday morning train to Louisville.

I was in the middle of a dream about the juicy steak dinner I was going to enjoy at the Galt House Hotel when I was startled awake by a pounding on my door.

At the inquest later that day, Judge Varnon asked the prisoner if he had anything to say, and Toy Teeters replied, “I killed him. He called me a damn liar and put his hand in his pocket, so I jerked my pistol out of my overcoat and let him have it.”

Jumping up to answer the rapping, I tripped over a chair and fell hard to the wooden floor. The voice on the other side of the door said, “John Robert, you okay in there?”

I found Louisville to be a disaster. There were hundreds dead, probably 2,500 houses destroyed.

Every building, tree, telegraph pole in the path of the twister was leveled. Eleven of the city’s fourteen tobacco warehouses were wiped away. It was a sad and depressing sight.

I knew the voice; it was the office boy from the paper.

He was one of the few people in town who did not call me by my nickname, Rex, gained from covering train wrecks when I first started at the newspaper.

With so many telegraph lines down, and emergency communications taking precedent in use of the wires, I carried my tornado story back to Stanford where it ran on the front page.

I gathered myself up, opened the door and admitted my guest. He cut right to the chase. “There’s been a killing. Mr. Walton wants you to go get the story.”

The murder was in Macksville, the African American suburb just across the tracks north of the passenger depot. The body had already been taken to the courthouse. I immediately got dressed and covered the block to the courthouse in less than a minute.

Justice acted swiftly in the Toy Teeters matter. The trial was held within two weeks of the murder.

The facts showed that Will Baugh had come to town to collect some money, but he got distracted looking for illicit activities.

The deceased turned out to be Will Allen Baugh of Highland. He had been shot in the face. Toy Teeters, an African American male, had led Marshall Newland to the body, and helped transport the body to the courthouse.

He was sitting up with Marshall Newland and the body. He was acting calm and collected but

He left his horse at Menefee’s stable and walked over to Macksville. He offered a lady there twenty cents to go with him. She refused and he pulled a pistol on her.

WHAT'S HAPPENIN' IN HUSTONVILLE?

BY ABIGAIL ROBERTS CONTRIBUTING WRITER You might have noticed a brand new sign in the Hustonville City Park – that is thanks to local elementary student Bentley Pike. Bentley, a student at Hustonville Elementary, was the winner of a contest to design the city park sign. “It’s a brand new sign and it is outstanding. It’s a hand-colored tiger with flowers and a little bit of graphics behind it,” said Hustonville Mayor Timothy Smith. Smith said the city plans to hold a contest every four years to allow Hustonville students to help design the city park sign. “The end result is a beautiful sign with input from the youth of our community,” he said.

The City of Hustonville has several events coming up over the next few months.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the city will kick off its annual Car Show on Main Street. Smith said the car show will begin at 10 a.m. and run all day.

The Hustonville Heritage Days group will be putting on a Fall Festival and Craft Fair on Oct. 28. “It’s a one-day event, depending on the weather, it will either be at the Fire House or over in City Park,” Smith said. The event will feature games, festive food, a local market of vendors and crafts. The festival will ring in the Halloween holiday as the city plans to hold its annual trick or treat on Oct. 28 as well, beginning at 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Not long after Halloween, the city will be celebrating the fall weather with an annual chili supper to help raise funds for the Toys for Tigers program. The chili supper will be held at the Hustonville Fire Station. “That event will also have a silent auction,” Smith said. “Every year we support a few kids in the community, as many as we can, and usually it’s quite a few, and make sure that they have a proper holiday season and Christmas.”

The Hustonville City Council meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. at Hustonville City Hall. Smith said there is plenty of room to accommodate anyone who would like to attend.

Builder's Supply Sixty Years of Service Written by Jonathan L. Smith, Lincoln County Historian

Henry Rowan Saufley, III, known to all as “Short,” has operated Builder’s Supply at 814 E. Main Street in Stanford since 1963. Short graduated from Stanford High School in 1953, where he was a multisport athlete, excelling in football and basketball.

Then, he moved on to the University of Kentucky where he played on the Freshman basketball team.

After graduating with an engineering degree from UK, Short served as an aviator in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, followed by service as a helicopter pilot in the National Guard. It was after his active-duty service that Short returned home and briefly worked as an engineer for the Kentucky Department of Transportation. He resigned that position to purchase the building supply business operated by Roy Charles Hastie and his son Billy Roy Hastie. The Hasties continued operating CAPCO (County Auto Parts Company) from their location, while Short moved the building supply company to its current location on the northeast corner of East Main Street and Highway 27.

Stanford and Lincoln County to grow by providing much-needed housing stock. Those developments include Dix River Estates, Bass Acres, Lee Drive, and much more.

Since 1989, Short has been assisted in the business by his daughter Lee Saufley Swain. She helped her father expand the business, including constructing a new, larger building in 2007. Together, they have cemented Builder’s Supply’s position as an important business to the people of Lincoln County. Many homes in our county have been constructed with materials provided by Builder’s Supply, and many of them were also on land developed by Short Saufley, a man with a long-range vision and a love of his hometown. Kudos to Short and Lee for their longevity, consistency, and support of the community for over sixty years!

Originally, that building had been a skating rink, before it became the first location for Cowden’s clothing manufacturing plant. When Cowden’s moved out, Jim Cherry’s Cherokee Sales occupied the property, followed by a company called “Louvers and Dampers,” a new business started with the help of Kentucky Business Development Corporation, which manufactured fresh air intakes, louvers, and dampers for mechanical trade applications. About two years after starting in Stanford, Louvers and Dampers moved to Somerset, paving the way for Short Saufley to use that location for Builder’s Supply.

Short started small, growing over time, until Builder’s Supply was the only lumber and hardware business remaining in Stanford. Short has also been a real estate developer, being part of a local group who developed more subdivision lots in and around Stanford than anyone else at any other time. Those subdivision developments certainly helped his building supply business, but it also helped P 26

Tasting tickets are $5 each, in order to eat, taste and judge entries. It is $10 to enter your chili in the Cook Off. The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on the stage in Veteran’s Park. A Fan Favorite Winner will receive a trophy and the Judges Pick Winner will win the entry fees.

Crab Orchard will be celebrating Trick or Treat on Tues., Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The city is asking homes to leave a porch light on if you will be handing out candy.

Crab Orchard City Clerk Nancy Baker said there’s been a lot of work going on in Crab Orchard these days.

The stage in Veterans Park is complete and has been hosting live music on a regular basis. The city has also made some sidewalk improvements.

Baker said soon the doors on the new Family Dollar Tree will be open!

The city is also working with a surveyor to potentially annex more areas, including out to the William Whitley House.

Crab Orchard is also beginning a $300,000 storm water project that will help alleviate flooding on the west end of town.

The Crab Orchard Amish School Consignment sale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 starting at 9 a.m. at the Lincoln County Produce Auction on Hwy. 39. The 18th annual Quilt Auction will begin at 12 p.m.

The Crab Orchard City Commission meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

She got away from him, and he wound up with two other men drinking beer at Anderson Carr’s place on Depot Street. After some beer, they decided to go back to Macksville and see if they could find the same woman.

In Macksville, they met up with Toy Teeters, who lived there, and he went with them to find the woman. When they found her, she told Teeters that Will Baugh was the same man who had put a pistol in her face earlier, and she refused to go with him.

Will called her a damn liar. That’s when Toy Teeters took offense, pulled out his pistol and sent a 38caliber ball through Will Baugh’s face and brain stem at point blank range.

At trial, the jury got hung up on the legal requirement for the presence of “malice aforethought” for a murder charge.

They jury argued among themselves that the men had all been in a good mood, without any malice, just prior to the shooting, so they brought back a verdict of manslaughter.

Toy Teeters received a sentence for 21 years in the penitentiary. He was on the train to prison within a half hour of the verdict, to avoid a rumored mob action. Had the jury understood that malice aforethought can be instantaneous to the act causing the death, he would have been given a life sentence, or maybe even a death sentence.

The fragility of life and the contrast between all the innocent lives lost in Louisville in a natural disaster, and the life lost in Stanford due to the evil thoughts and acts of men, was something that I thought about for quite some time.

Covering murders was, unfortunately, a part of this job with which I was all too familiar. Seeing people die from a violent outburst of nature was not, though. The Louisville scenes shook me much more than did the murder in Stanford.
