If you know me, you know that I wait 9 months for fall every year when fall ends. I live for the cool breeze that asks for layers of clothes, and a crisp walk outside. I yearn for a candle scented like pumpkin, cinnamon, and spices to fill my house. Something about the smell of fall feels like home to me. Not only the commercial smell of fall, but also the actual smell of fall when you crunch the leaves under your boots. The warm colors of the changing leaves and decorations are what dreams are made of to me.

This is the edition that I hope you're reading with a warm coffee or tea, baking your pumpkin bread, wearing your favorite sweatshirt, and getting cozy. It's my hope that when you turn the last page over, you're ready to go pumpkin patching, and apple picking, or even trick-ortreating.

Summer in Jessamine County was packed full of activities and events! So many, in fact, that I'm afraid I've missed a couple here. I love seeing Jessamine County alive and thriving! New businesses are making their way to town, and future residents are actively searching for a home here. Sure, it sometimes feels like we are getting whiplash from all the fast changes around here, but wouldn't you rather live in a booming town than a dying one? Me too.

With that said, it's increasingly important to frequent our small businesses here in Jessamine County. One day, one of our neighbors decided to go for it. They thought opening their own business was a good idea, and they believed in us to help them make it a reality for them.

They risked everything to show up for us, let's show up for them. Frequenting our local businesses helps our local economy, local families, and our community as a whole.

"The Storyteller's Trance" C. Ed Bryson It was my dad’s favorite story. The coon dog’s name was Clare. It was from a time in 1940’s Appalachia when people depended on the land to supplement subsistence farming. In that, Clare had a superpower!

“You could tell when she was studying,” he’d start. “Coons came in different sizes of course and we had half a dozen pine boards shaped to a rounded point we’d stretch the skins over. Mom hung one of those boards on the smokehouse every week, Clare would sit for a bit and study the board then head for the woods, not returning until she’d found a coon sized to fit that particular board.” Dad would pause then, a grin lighting his eyes. “Unfortunately, without thinking, one day Mom leaned a wooden ironing board against the smokehouse and Clare never came back!”

More Tales is of course a play on words. The festival takes place in Wilmore, Kentucky the third weekend of September each year. But more tales is also a universal call to sit in the presence of friends and share experiences in laughter and pathos common to all people. Like binge watching a compelling Netflix series, an unfolding story well told by a skilled storyteller begs to be followed by another!

I first encountered storytelling as performance art 40 years ago at the Corn Island Storytelling Festival in Louisville.

The late Jackie Torrence, an African American librarian from Raleigh North Carolina, had singlehandedly rescued the Uncle Remus tales from obscurity. With uncommon skill she engaged her face and body to emphasize perfect pauses in sassy dialogue that carried me into what I’d later recognize as the storyteller’s trance. Powerless in the storyteller’s grip, then released by the story’s climax I craved to learn more. That quest focused my life.

Almost unknown outside their following, is a cohort of storytelling artist who perform across North America and the world. More Tales determined early on to seek out the best of those performers. Come and be enchanted at the Glass Pavilion behind the Wilmore Municipal Center on September 15 & 16 starting at 6:30 on Friday. Fall Happenings in Jessamine County!

There is so much happening in Jessamine County this fall, and we are so excited not only to have the locals come out for all there is to do, but also for our visitors who come to Jessamine County. To see an entirely new festival, come out on Saturday, September 23, to Performance Park to see award-winning street artist and muralist, Anat Ronen! The chalk art is unlike any you’ve ever seen -- it looks 3D! While you’re there, visit artist booths, food trucks, music, and even make your own chalk art.

Also in September is the More Tales Storytelling Festival in Wilmore! This is the 6th annual festival, and it’s an entirely free event, thanks to the sponsors! This will be the 15th and 16th. September 30th and October 1st will be the Welcome Autumn event at The Bryan House! The Summer event went fantastically, and the Autumn event will be another great time for the family!

On October 7th, go to Wilmore for the Arts and Crafts Festival! Then on the 31st, Jessamine County has two fun, family-oriented Halloween trick-or-treating times for Nicholasville and Wilmore. Residents from both towns can make it to the events, depending on proximity.

Q & A : The Next Steps of Dexter Knight Some of us know Dexter Knight as a teacher, a friend, or even a City Commissioner. He's someone Jessamine County is proud of, and his contributions can be felt in the community. This will be the first school year that Knight won't be a part of the first day in over 2 decades.

Dexter Knight was an Agriculture teacher at Jessamine County HS (and West Jessamine HS), KY FFA Executive Secretary, where he ran the day-today operations and events for the entire state of Kentucky. FFA is the “old” Future Farmers of America. Then, he was Principal of Jessamine Career and Technology Center (2005-2022), and is now City Commissioner and Instructor in UK’s Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture Food and Environment. A pretty impressive resume to say the least.

What do you love so much about Jessamine County?

I was born and raised in Jessamine County. Folks that live in the county (I did for 23 years) as well as the City of Nicholasville are some of the best people in the world. Southern Hospitality flows through our county and town if you know where to look! Groups like the Jessamine Beef Cattle Association, Jess Co. Extension Homemakers, church groups, civic groups such as Rotary, etc. have some of the nicest people!

Do you feel like you succeeded during your career? Did you do certain things you set out to do?

I feel like everything I have done in my schooling and career has prepared me for my “next step”. My mother and father valued people above possessions, so I have invested most of my time and energy towards building relationships with friends, family, and community. I had a great “raising” and education in Jessamine County.

I feel as I am truly blessed to have lived the life I have up to this point and look forward to continuing to contribute to my family and community.

Why did you run for City Commissioner?

Being City Commissioner is no different than being a teacher or principal. You are a public servant charged with taking care of the city, it’s business and most importantly the people who live here. I felt that I could make a difference by bringing my life experiences of taking care of students and teachers for the last 35+ years.

Just apply my life philosophy to the cities work and help be a good steward of our city and the people who live and work here.

Is that a role you intend to keep?

It depends on what “comes down the pike”. I have a lot of family responsibilities and responsibilities with my part time job at UK. I’ll better be able to answer this question in a few months.

You have been awarded for your service to Jessamine County.

To what or whom do you owe as your motivation to leave such legacy?

My parents and my wife Wanda. My parents provided a solid foundation of an upbringing that gave me the love of education and community. My parents were of the generation that received some schooling and went back to our family farm; however, my mother KNEW the power of education and supported me from the time I was 5 years old till I graduated from UK. I am one of 4 (one is my son) to earn a college degree. That was generational change for my family.

What are you up to now?

Teaching in the College of Agriculture in agriculture education working with undergraduates who want to become agriculture teachers and extension professionals. I absolutely love what I am doing right now! When not at UK or City meetings and events I am spending time with my family which includes 4 granddaughters and one due in September. We also own a landscaping and mowing company (since 2009), however I am opting to slow down a bit to spend more time with the family.

What would you tell the reader if you could say anything?

GET involved in our local community! I have been truly blessed by all the people I have met and worked with over the years. We need folks to INVEST time in making Nicholasville and Jessamine County a better place. If we are not growing or trying to improve, something is amiss!

What would you say to Jessamine Countians reading this?

I just want to thank the community for blessing me with a wonderful career and life while I have been here! My family and I have been blessed, lucky, and fortunate all three so far!

Local Author Spotlight SCOTT HARVEY

I've lived in Jessamine County for over 25 years. I spent 18 years teaching D.A.R.E. and supervising School Resource Officers while I worked for the Nicholasville Police Department. I was also a hostage negotiator and public information officer.

I started speaking professionally in 2010 while working at the PD (using vacation time to travel and speak). When I retired in 2018, my speaking business became full-time. I added a podcast (The Speaking of Harvey Podcast), coaching, and mastermind facilitation to the list of things I do.

My first book, Silence Kills was published by Morgan James Publishing in April of 2023.

Since 2010, I have spoken to hundreds of thousands of people from stages all over the country. I'm excited to see how Silence Kills helps spread my message.

COMMUNITY IMPACT OF

Sandy Adams

To positively impact a community means to make a meaningful and lasting contribution that improves the lives of the people who live there. This can take many forms, including volunteering, donating to local charities, and supporting local schools, churches, and businesses. Ultimately, a positive impact on a community means creating a better future for everyone who lives there, and leaving a legacy that will benefit generations to come.

Jessamine County is fortunate to have a community leader who owns Zaxby's, and puts faith, family, and the community before self. Sandy (Corman) Adams started Kids Eat Free days at Zaxby's and finds ways to sponsor and support East and West Jessamine in sports and academics. Sandy does this by hosting nights at Zaxby’s in which funds are raised for programs like the cheerleaders, church youth groups, soccer teams, winterguards, football and basketball teams, and so many more. It doesn’t take long to see how often Sandy and Zaxby’s hosts fundraisers for our kids. Her heart translates through her business, and she is generous with time, funds, and resources to support our Jessamine County Students.

Recently, Zaxby’s had a school supply giveaway until supplies ran out, on the same night that kids eat free with a regular price purchase. She also does the Princess Angels, where they purchase Christmas for children in Jessamine County. It’s almost as if she spends time every week just thinking about how she can help our community. When you see Sandy, give her a smile back.

Sandy, Jessamine County appreciates all you do for the community, which is too much to list. People like you are the reason we love this community at JCL. Thank you for all you continue to do.

History of Wilmore Wilmore was in existence before the Cincinnati Southern Railroad put its line through the area in the early 1880s. However, the railroad established a depot in the town and gave it the name “Scott’s Station” in honor of John Scott, the landowner on all sides of the depot and from whom the railroad had acquired their right-of-way.

Thus, the town was briefly called Scott’s Station until some of Mr. Scott’s livestock were killed by a train and he sued for the loss. The railroad quickly changed the name to Wilmore, to conform to the name given to the post office there, pre-railroad in 1877, and to snub their adverse litigant. Some sources give the origin of the post office name to another landowner, John R. Wilmore, who moved from Wilmore to Harrodsburg about 1883, right after the railroad came to town. He died in Harrodsburg in 1926.

While the railroad put Wilmore on the map, so to speak, it was Asbury College that helped it grow and remain relevant after railroads were no longer relevant. Reverend John Wesley Hughes founded Kentucky Holiness College in Wilmore in 1890, after the town’s leading citizens raised the sum of $1,600 to start the school. The name of the school was later changed to Asbury College to honor Francis Asbury, a Methodist Bishop who started Bethel Academy near Wilmore on the cliffs overlooking the Kentucky River. Bethel Academy was the first church-affiliated school west of the Allegheny mountains when it opened two hundred thirty years ago in 1793. It closed about 1808.

Wilmore has thrived and evolved through the years from a farming village, to a railroad town, to a church school college and seminary town, and that’s the real constant over the past 133 years—its role as host of Asbury College.

Local State Farm Agents Give Away 250 Backpacks to Jessamine County Students For the past few years, local State Farm agents rally hundreds of backpacks for students without the means to purchase a backpack to carry their supplies and heavy books. When State Farm agents started this, they got a total of 100 backpacks, and unfortunately learned that wasn't going to be enough. Each year, they increase that number, and this year, they were able to get 250 backpacks for Jessamine County students. The agents say that the social implications are a factor as well, and combined with the physical and educational limitations of preparedness it poses on our students, the need for backpacks is highly evident, and they are happy to help.

Nicholasville Police Department held their annual "Cram the Cruiser" day as well, to gather school supplies for students in need. Without school supplies, it limits the rate of success for our students, and NPD tries to offset that with this event. On behalf of Jessamine County Living Magazine, we want to thank our local State Farm agents and Nicholasville Police Department for their commitment to enhancing the educational experience for our Jessamine County Students.

Nicholasville Mayor Alex Carter's Letter Dear neighbors, friends, and family, Fall is here!

Cooler temperatures and East, and West Jessamine High School Football are here! We are excited to announce The First Annual Chalk Fest is coming to downtown Nicholasville! Visit Jessamine has partnered with the City of Nicholasville and others to bring the award winning street artist and muralist, Anat Ronen to town. Our community will be able to enjoy music, food, shopping and creating your own chalk creation while watching as Anat Ronen creates some permanent installations in our Downtown! We hope that you’ll save the date and join us in downtown Nicholasville on September 23!

We encourage you to get out and see the leaves change color by utilizing the two miles of trails on fifty acres of wooded land surrounding the Riney B Aquatic Center. If running isn’t what interests you, it is also equipped with an 18-hole disk golf course.

Have you enjoyed our concert series at the Performance Park in downtown Nicholasville this summer? If you are more musically inclined, our concert offers something for everyone and these concert will continue on the 1st Friday of each month through fall as the City of Nicholasville is committed to improving our downtown experience and atmosphere for everyone.

Judge Executive David West's Letter With school back in session, the days growing shorter, and the weather getting cooler, residents may be looking for entertaining ways to gather as a family or spend time with friends. Jessamine County has many events held in the Fall that are fun for all ages. From Storytelling Festivals, Tractor Shows, Arts & Crafts Festivals, Chalk Fest and Live Music, Jessamine County has something for everyone. So as the leaves change color, I hope all residents and visitors can find joy and memorable moments all throughout Jessamine County this fall season.

Wilmore Mayor Harold Rainwater's Letter Fall is in the air, and Wilmore is ready to celebrate and enjoy some cool, sunny autumn days. We are always excited to have all our schools, public and private, resume their academic schedules. And we welcome new visitors, old friends, county neighbors, and local residents to our small town. In the retail district, we have two new shops that have opened on E. Main – Special Blessings and Gold Flame Diecast. And Antiques on the Avenue has recently doubled its inventory at its shop on S. Lexington Ave. Other shops are busy adding new merchandise for the coming holiday season.

Farmers Market continues to be a social and shopping destination on Saturday mornings. There are several family friendly and free events which you will want to attend, such as the More Tales Storytelling Festival (Sept. 15-16), Arts & Crafts Festival (Oct. 7), and our Veterans Day Parade which will be held on Nov. 11. Come to Wilmore where you will be greeted with a hand wave and smile!
