Garrard Homeschoolers is an informal support group for homeschool families in and around Garrard County. Our goal is to foster community and provide flexible educational enrichment experiences. Members of our group range from first time homeschoolers transitioning out of public school to veteran parents who have graduated multiple children already. There is always someone there to offer advice for your season of life.
We love getting together to go on field trips! Last year, we visited Salato Wildlife, Shaker Village, EKU Center for the Arts, Lexington Children’s Theatre, and more. We got together for play dates, for painting masterpieces in the park, and for an outdoor movie night. Our Valentine’s Day celebration was so fun and our kiddos read so many pages in their Read-aThon that they raised over $3,000 for a local nonprofit!
This year, we have started a regular co-op meeting space where we meet in smaller groups by age ranges for educational enrichment, and also learn fundamental childhood skills like playing kickball. We welcome new group members and are so excited about the future. Join us on Facebook by searching “Garrard Homeschoolers” or email is at garrardhomeschoolers@gmail.com.

A Strong Sense of Community: One of the most distinct . Residents often know each other by name, and social interactions are characterized by warmth and familiarity. This close-knit environment fosters a support system where neighbors look out for one another, lending a helping hand in times of need. Community events, such as local fairs, farmers' markets, and town hall meetings, are not just social gatherings but vital threads that weave the fabric of town life.
Simplicity and Peace: Living in a small town often means embracing a simpler, more peaceful way of life. The reduced noise levels, lower crime rates, and absence of urban congestion contribute to a sense of tranquility. This peaceful environment is ideal for those seeking to escape the relentless hustle and bustle of city living. The pace of life is slower, allowing residents to savor the little moments and enjoy a higher quality of life.
Connection with Nature: Small towns are often nestled in picturesque settings, surrounded by natural beauty. Challenges and Considerations: Despite the many advantages, small town living is not without its challenges. Employment opportunities may be limited, particularly in specialized fields. Access to amenities such as advanced healthcare, shopping centers, and entertainment venues can also be restricted, necessitating occasional trips to larger towns or cities.

Garrard County was formed from parts of Lincoln, Madison, and Mercer counties in 1796, as the state’s twenty-fifth county It was named in honor of James Garrard (1749-1822), a Revolutionary war veteran, a Baptist minister, and the state’s second Governor.
After Isaac Shelby announced he would not seek reelection after his initial term as Kentucky’s first Governor, three men ran to replace him: Benjamin Logan of Lincoln County, James Garrard of Bourbon County, and Thomas Todd of Danville (which was in Mercer County at that time).
Under the Kentucky’s original constitution, the office of Governor was filled by each legislative district in the state choosing an elector, and the electors would then cast ballots for Governor. In later years, the office would be filled by a popular vote of all eligible voters.
Benjamin Logan was the favorite to replace Shelby. He was very popular as a rough-and-tumble settler of the Kentucky wilderness who had moved away from Lincoln County to Shelby County. His thought was that Lincoln County’s Isaac Shelby was the current Governor, and electors probably would not pick a Governor from the same county to replace him. As a minister, James Garrard was very polished as a speaker and his moral character was beyond reproach. Thomas Todd was a young lawyer from Danville who had served as the clerk for nine of Kentucky’s ten Constitutional Conventions
Both Ben Logan and James Garrard were chosen as electors from their respective legislative districts. When the votes were counted, Logan had 21, Garrard had 17, Todd received 14, and a single elector voted for a candidate not on the ballot. The theory was that either Logan or Garrard found it improper to vote for himself, but also could not justify voting for a named opponent.
With none of the candidates getting a majority of the 53 votes, there was a second ballot held between he top two vote-getters. This time, Garrard came out on top and became Shelby’s successor. Logan contested the election on various grounds but none of them succeeded.
Garrard was re-elected by a popular vote four years later and after that second term he retired from politics and spent his remaining days on his estate in Bourbon County. Interestingly, there is another place with the Garrard name in Kentucky, and it can be found in Clay County. The unincorporated area known as Garrard is located just southeast of Manchester and is named for descendants of James Garrard who were involved in the Goose Creek Salt Works of that area
