History

History of the Death Valley Bowl

Two and a half decades. A score and five years ago. A quarter of a century. Twenty five years. This will be the twenty-fifth of the PBK Bank/WPBK-FM Death Valley Bowl. The double-header bowl game was started in 1998 by WPBK-FM’s very own Jonathan Smith and Tim Estes.

At that time, Jonathan (Jon Logan, to listeners) was the owner of WRSL and Tim was the head football coach at Lincoln County High School. WRSL guaranteed to financially underwrite the Bowl Game for the first three years, in order to get it started. Beginning in the fourth season, PBK Bank became the sole sponsor for the next ten years. Then, in 2011, PBK Bank and WPBK-FM, the successor to WRSL, became co-sponsors.

Other people who were very important to the start of the Death Valley Bowl were Timmy Whitis, Larry Nunemaker and Norb King. The work of hundreds of people since then has kept the Bowl Game thriving and continuing.

New Helmet Design for 2022

The beloved block “L” has been part of the Lincoln football helmet design for all but five seasons since 1988. The first nine seasons (1974-1982) at LCHS saw white numbers on blue helmets, then a season (1983) of blue numbers on white helmets, followed by a season (1984) of red numbers on white helmets. Then, a switch to “Patriots” written in script for two season (1985-1986), and finally a star design (1987). After the block “L” started in 1988, it remained that way for sixteen seasons (1988-2003), then we saw a cursive font “L” for four seasons (2004-2007), followed by six seasons (2008-2013) of the block “L” again. For four seasons after that (2014-2017), there were four different designs that contained various logos on opposite sides of the helmet, with three of the four seasons including the block “L”. The lone block “L” returned for the past four seasons (20182021).

New head coach Josh Jaggers played one season during the block “L” years, and his father Marty was the head coach during five of those seasons. Josh understands the block “L” significance to Patriot fans and wanted to incorporate it into a design that would bring the whole county together. In doing so, he created the new logo, with the five stars around the block “L” representing the five schools that consolidated to form Lincoln County High School: Crab Orchard, Hustonville, McKinney, Memorial, and Stanford. Way to go, Coach Jaggers. We think you nailed it!

Somerset’s Coach, Robbie Lucas, is no stranger to Death Valley Stadium or the Death Valley Bowl. Robbie is a 1990 graduate of Lincoln County High School and was the head coach of the Patriots in 2002 and 2003. Garrard County’s Coach, Spencer Crutchfield, is no stranger here either. While a Garrard County football alum (’01-’04), he was the head coach at Lincoln County from 2018-2021. Robbie is coaching in his 6th PBK Bank/WPBK-FM Death Valley Bowl, while Spencer will be coaching in his fifth. Last season, these two met face-to-face, with Crutchfield’s Lincoln County team getting the win 50-20 Crutchfield resigned as Lincoln County head coach in December 2021, and became the 13th head coach in Garrard County history. He will have two of the other former Golden Lion head coaches on his staff when he opens the season tonight: Jeff Hester, who was most recently an assistant coach at Boyle County; and Mark Scenters most recently the head coach at Madison Central, and now an assistant principal at Garrard.

How will these two teams match up? Garrard County was a ball control team under former coach Jerry Perry, and liked to play smashmouth football. Spencer Crutchfield is likely to open up the offense and we can expect to see a more balanced pass/run attack. The Golden Lions will have to replace Montavin Quisenberry who transferred to a different school. He accomplished the rare feat in 2021 as a freshman of passing for over 1,000 yards (90/130 for 1,034 yards), and rushing for over 1,000 yards (1,501 on 162 attempts).

When Somerset has the ball, we can expect to see Coach Lucas get the ball into the hands of Guy Bailey, who rushed for 1,140 yards as a sophomore last season. The Briar Jumpers were a little more run than pass in 2021, and that will probably continue by featuring Bailey at running back. This one looks like a good game on paper, and it will be interesting to see the game unfold.

Game 2: Lincoln Co. VS Danville

This has been the most-lopsided series in Lincoln football history. Danville has always had Lincoln’s number, even last season when the Patriots appeared to outplay the Admirals, but lost 13-7. In twenty-five meetings, Danville has officially won 23 of them, but one of those was a forfeit loss due to an ineligible player. This season, the Patriots are led by head coach Josh Jaggers, who began his playing career at Lincoln County, but finished it at Danville. It only seems fitting that his first game as the Patriot mentor would be against the Admirals. Danville is coached by Mark Peach, now in his second season leading the Admirals. Peach is a proven head coach and is more than capable of winning big games.

Lincoln County had three 1,000+ yard produces last season, and will have to replace its primary playmaker, or “Claymaker” as he was often called. Clayton Davis set several LCHS football records during his career: Points scored in a career (360); Receiving yards in a season (1,211); Receptions in a season (72); Receiving touchdowns in a season (13); Receiving yards in a career (2,307); Receptions in a career (132); Receiving touchdowns in a career (26); and two-point conversions in a career (12). Lee Amon who rushed for 1,132 yards last season, despite missing a couple of game for injury, was also lost to graduation. The third 1,000+ yard performer, however, will be returning this year. Sawyer Horton threw for 1,612 yards as a sophomore quarterback, which is the second-best season passing yardage in Lincoln football history. While he lost his primary receiver in Clayton Davis, there are reports from summer 7 on 7 competitions that indicate some players stepping up in the receiving roles.

Danville also had a 1,000 yard performer in 2021, in senior quarterback Brady Morse. He completed 72 of 143 passes for 1,225 yards and 15 touchdowns. Coach Peach will have to replace Morse as well as his leading rusher Caleb Burns. However, Demauriah Brown will return for his sophomore season, having rushed for 513 yards as a freshman. How do these teams match up? Traditionally, Danville’s speed has given Lincoln County trouble. Last season, that really was not the issue, but Danville proved to be the stronger team when it mattered most. They made a goal line stand that turned back the Patriots and dashed all hopes of a win. For Lincoln County to win this game, they will have to nullify the speed advantage and win the battle in the trenches. This is a tough opening game for Lincoln County—a team with a new coach that is searching for its new playmakers. It will be fun to see the chess match that plays out among the coaches, and watch the young players step up into new roles.

Lincoln County scored early and often, opening up the floodgates for an impressive 50-20 win over Somerset last year. Lee Amon scored the first touchdown of the game on a 16 yard run with 8:51 to play in the 1st Quarter. Dalton Board added the two point conversion to make the score 8-0. After intercepting a Somerset pass in the end zone, the Patriots would hit pay dirt again with 3:32 left in the 1st Quarter when Clayton Davis broke through the line for an 80 yard scoring jaunt. Dalton Board again added the 2 point PAT to make the score 16-0.

Clayton Davis would find the endzone again a few minutes later when he ran 21 yards with 11:13 to play in the second quarter. This time Kolby Towns kicked the PAT to make the score 23-0. Lincoln extended the lead to 30-0 on a 28 yard run by Dalton Board with 3:46 remaining in the 2nd Q. Towns again added the PAT kick. Somerset would drive down and get a touchdown with no time left on the clock on a 4 yard pass reception by Cam Hughes. Guy Bailey took it across for the 2 point conversion to make the halftime score 30-8.

To start the second half the Patriots made a big 4th down stop, and on the ensuing play Lee Amon scooted 54 yards for his second score of the night. A bad snap resulted in the PAT failing, leaving the score 36-8. After another defensive stop, the Patriots scored again with a phenomenal 76 yard run by Clayton Davis. Another failed PAT kick left left the score at 40-8 in favor of the home team. On the ensuing kickoff, Somerset’s Grayson Turner took the kick 75 yards to make the score 4214 when the 2 point conversion failed, with 1:34 to play in the 3rd quarter.

Lincoln County came right back to put the game out of reach when Dalton Board ran 21 yards for his second touchdown of the game at the 11:47 mark of the 4th quarter. Board then added the 2 point PAT, making the score 50-14. The 36 point differential resulted in a mercyrule running clock for the Patriots. Somerset would not be denied and Guy Bailey scored from 2 yards out with to 4:10 to play to make it 50-20 after the failed Somerset 2-pt conversion. The Patriots rushed for 467 yards on 26 carries and scored 7 rushing touchdowns: Clayton Davis, 7/208 yards, 3 TD; Lee Amon, 10/172 yards, 2 TD; and Dalton Board, 7/83 yards, 2 TD.

2021-Game 2 Results

Danville 23

Garrard County 20

Garrard County used a ball-control offense to play keep-away from Danville, but the Admirals scored 14 points first quarter points, despite running just one offensive play during a nine second possession, and held on for a 23-20 victory. The lone first quarter offensive play was a 63 yard scoring strike from quarterback Brady Morse to Keelan Story. Keegan Wilcher added the PAT kick, putting Danville up 7-0

On Garrard County’s ensuing possession, Danville added a defensive score when Caleb Burn returned a fumble 32 yards for a scoop-andscore touchdown. Wilcher again added the kick and Danville led 14-0. The Golden Lions responded, though, with a 39 yard touchdown run by Austin Adams. Adams added the 2-point conversion cutting the Danville to 14-8.

Danville responded with a 36 yard scoring run by Demauriah Grey, capped by Wilcher’s third PAT kick of the night, expanding the Admiral lead to 21-8. Their final points of the game on a safety with 3:13 left in the first half, giving Danville 23-8 halftime lead.

The third quarter was scoreless, and all of the fourth quarter scoring was tallied by Garrard County. With 11:48 to play in the game, Montavin Quisenberry threw for 12 yards to Chase Burkhart, but the 2point run attempt failed, leaving the score at 21-14. The final score of the game was the result of a ninety-six yard, seven-and-half minute drive with another Quisenberry to Burkhart touchdown pass, this one for six yards. The two-point pass attempt failed, and Danville’s lead was cut to 23-20.

That would be the final score as the Admirals safely recovered the onside kick attempt with less than a minute to play, and were able to run out the remaining time. Danville passed for 103 yards and rushed for 148 yards. Garrard County rushed for 219 yards, and passed by 83. The quick-strike capabilities and defensive scores of Danville were the difference in the game.

Game Day Chili

3 lb ground beef

6 cloves of garlic

2 large onions

2 bunches of scallions

2 tbs tomato paste

6 tbs chile powder

2 28 oz cans crushed tomatoes

2 cups chicken stock

Top with sour cream, cilantro, jalapenos, diced tomatoes, fresh monterrey jack

1. In a large Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the ground meat. Cook and stir occasionally until browned all over and you can hear a slight crackling in the pan, letting you know the moisture has cooked away, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the garlic, onions and half of the scallions and cook until wilted, about 5 minutes. Make a space in the pan and drop in the tomato paste. Let toast for 1 minute and then stir into the meat. Sprinkle on the chile powder. Cook and stir until fragrant, about 2 minutes.

3. Pour in the beer and cook until almost reduced away, about 4 minutes. Pour in the tomatoes and stock and season with the red and green hot sauce. Adjust the heat so the chili is gently simmering and cook, uncovered, until the chili is thick, dark red and flavorful, about 1 1/2 hours. Serve in bowls with the remaining scallions and suggested toppings.
