1962
Simpson Galleries’ spring Fine Art & Antiques auction will be held on Saturday, May 20th, 2023
Celebrating a generational tradition of selecting notable examples of paintings, fine furniture, Asian textiles, sterling metalwork, glazed ceramics, drawings, bronze wildlife and figural sculptures, abstract expressionist prints, diamond jewelry, and with a specialty in regional Texas artists and antique documents; Simpson Galleries takes pride in curating each lot for our bidders.
In this catalog you will discover a world of history. A collection of rare books, documents, and artifacts from various periods in Texas history collected by Texas State Senator Hubert Hudson . Hudson, an avid collector of Texas and Mexican history in the 19th century, lived in Brownsville, Texas, where he amassed this collection.
Fine American furniture from the collection of the late Thomas Dunaway Anderson. Anderson, among many other notable achievements, was the chairman of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), Houston Grand Opera, and Bayou Bend Advisory Committee of MFAH, of which he was first chairman. In the field of health, he was chairman and life member of the Board of Visitors of UT - MD Anderson Cancer Center, beginning in 1962.
The artwork in this auction is largely from the collection of the late Francis Tarlton “Sissy” Farenthold . In 1968, Farenthold was the first woman elected to the 150 member Texas House of Representatives. Later Sissy would became the national face of Texas progressives for more than a generation. In 2009, Sissy was the executive producer of Quest for Honor, a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was short-listed for an Academy Award for best documentary. Her collection is a direct reflection of her personal policy and public service. Mostly artists from Houston, Texas, with a focus on the contemporary and abstract.
We invite you to view our exhibition, Monday, May 15th, through Friday, May 19th . More than 400 lots will be presented from established Texas and American estates including property from the following:

Note: “It is beautiful here (in Le Havre), my friend; every day I discover even more beautiful things. It is intoxicating to me, and I want to paint it all - my head is bursting...It seems to me as if I can see nature and I can catch it all.” - Claude Monet in a letter to his friend Frédéric Bazille, 1864. Bord de Mer is important because it is among the first works to display Monet’s mastery of the “plein air (outdoor),” landscape technique which was essential to the development of impressionism. In 1857-58, when he was only 18 and still living in Le Havre, Monet met the local artist Eugène Boudin who persuaded him to go outside the studio and observe nature and draw and paint directly from it. Prior to this, most landscape paintings were created inside the artist’s studio and depicted scenes that were imagined or put together from sketches. Boudin told Monet to make art that truly observed nature and showed the interplay between solid objects and light, air, and atmosphere. Over the next decade, Monet refined this skill which would be central to his artistic evolution and the style we call impressionism. Bord de Mer was drawn in the mid 1860s during one of Monet’s many excursions to the Normandy coast near Le Havre. In it we can see that his subject matter includes not just sea and rocks, but also the movement of waves, the reflection of light, and the salty atmosphere. Bord de Mer will be included in the supplement of the Catalogue Critique de l’oeuvre de Claude Monet being prepared by Guy Wildenstein and has been authenticated by the Wildenstein Institute. It comes with a letter of authentication signed by Guy Wildenstein dated September 29, 2015.

Note: Charles W. Pressler, immigrated to Texas in 1846, establishing himself as a surveyor first with Jacob De Cordova. Pressler lead surveying expeditions for the active surveyor; later establishing a career with the General Land Office of the State of Texas in 1850, serving as Principal Draftsman from 1858-1865. It is during this time that Pressler and colleagues were commissioned to produce the present map. Argued as, “Unquestionably the finest map of Texas of its period,” this map improved the State of Texas and the United States’ understanding of Texas’ geography. The map shows the actual and proposed network of railroad lines, indicating population and inhabited areas of the West Texas territory. The map also details post offices, trails, and roads. Outside of man-made transportation routes, the single most detailed part of this map is the extensive system of waterways run through Texas. Indigenous territories are found near the Red River. The map was so well informed and drafted that not only the State of Texas, but also the United States Federal government consulted this map, and later editions, when resolving land disputes in the 19th century.
